Skylar Grey On Her Role In Dr. Dre’s ‘I Need A Doctor’

Singer/songwriter also discusses her newfound, post-Grammy performance fame with ‘RapFix Live.’ By D.L. Chandler, with reporting by Sway Calloway Skylar Grey Photo: MTV News Ever since her breakout performance on the 2011 Grammy Awards alongside Eminem and Dr. Dre, singer/songwriter Skylar Grey has exploded onto the scene and shows no signs of letting up. The 25-year-old Wisconsin native joined “RapFix Live” on Thursday afternoon after the world premiere of Dre’s video for “I Need a Doctor,” which features the dark-haired beauty’s urgent and haunting vocals. MTV News asked the red-hot songstress about her role in Dre’s new video for the second single from his final opus, Detox, but not before pointing out Skylar’s newfound notoriety. “Ever since the Grammy performance, we’ve been bombarded with people wanting to work with me, and interviews. It’s been pretty crazy,” Grey said. We asked the buzzing young vocalist about her role in the dramatic and epic video, in which she appears as a ghostly apparition. “My role in the video is not necessarily what you would expect,” shared Skylar. “I play a doctor, but it makes sense because I’m the rehabilitation doctor and [I’m] kind of bringing Dr. Dre back to life.” While Grey doesn’t consider herself an actor, she praised both Eminem and Dre for their performances in the video. “I thought that they were good, really good,” Skylar said. “I’ve seen Em do cameos in movies, and well, Em did ‘8 Mile,’ and I think he’s really talented in that area.” Grey is currently working with Alex da Kid on her debut album. Alex Da Kid Talks About Skylar Grey’s Debut Album

‘I Need a Doctor’ singer’s project will be first release on producer’s new label, he tells ‘RapFix Live.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Alex Da Kid in a Skpe interview Thursday Photo: MTV News Alex Da Kid and Skylar Grey have a proven track record, from their work together on Eminem’s chart-topper “Love the Way You Lie” and current hits “Words I Never Said” by Lupe Fiasco and “I Need a Doctor” by Dr. Dre. Now the duo — he, a producer and she, a songwriter — are teaming up to work on Grey’s debut album. The still-untitled project will be the first release on the British import’s new label. “I’m working on Skylar’s project, and I’m really excited about that,” he said during Thursday’s (February 24) Dr. Dre edition of “RapFix Live.” “She’s the first artist signed to my label. I’m just wrapping up my label situation right now, and that’s my main focus.” Alex Da Kid also has credits working with B.o.B and Paramore (“Airplanes”), Nicki Minaj (“Massive Attack”) and T.I. (“Castle Walls”); Grey penned the chorus for each track. “It’s just a creative experience being in the studio with different people,” Grey said of the pair’s work . “I’m not from the hip-hop world, but I think that’s what works for the sound that we got: the combination of the alternative chorus mixed with the hip-hop verses.” Although he has hopes to work across various genres and has been in the studio with artists as varied as Rob Thomas and Rihanna, ADK said he wants to make sure he doesn’t spread himself too thin. “I definitely want to take one thing at a time,” he said. “I don’t want to overload and work with everyone and dilute my sound. I want to fully focus on everything that I do. So that’s the next thing on the list.” What do you think of Alex and Skylar’s collabos so far? Let us know in the comments! Eminem And B.o.B Collaboration Leaks Online

The track, ‘Things Get Worse,’ features Em revisiting his Slim Shady persona. By Jayson Rodriguez B.o.B Photo: Atlantic Holy split personality! An unreleased Eminem and Bobby Ray collaboration was unearthed online Thursday (February 24) that finds the two MCs tapping into their respective manic alter egos, Slim Shady and B.o.B The mid-tempo track, “Things Get Worse,” harkens back to Em’s early days and his button-pushing rhymes. “Note to Jessica Simpson, let’s go with the tuna casserole,” Eminem raps in one of the verses. “‘Cause I used to love her hooters, now Carmen Electra’s cuter/ Strap an extension cord to her arm and electrocute her/ I’m off my f—ing meds but I’m on an electric scooter/ I might just scoot by and shoot my mom in the neck with Rugers/ Spit in Jason’s face while I vomit on Freddy Krueger/ They can’t even get Jeffrey Dahmer to pet the cougar.” “There’s no need to say sh– you already know, the question is just how far will this go,” B.o.B chants on the chorus. “‘Cause I will never lay down and I will never let up.” “I guess things are gonna get much worse ‘fore they get better,” Em chimes in. The song appeared on the blog of one of B.o.B’s managers, but there was no message indicating where the track will wind up or how long ago it was recorded. After scoring three top 10 hits on the pop charts with his debut album, B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray , the rapper/singer said he wanted to return to his more lyrical roots before starting his next project. In December, he released a mixtape, No Genre , that reminded his early supporters of his abilities, which he displays capably on “Things Get Worse.” “I pass by people on the street, they seem like sleeping zombies,” he raps. “Stiffer than a therapeutic pair of jeans you running/ So can you hear me coming?/ Eminem, this beat is absolutely disgusting/ It’s probably got diseases on it.” It’s not the first time the two stars have appeared on the same track, as Eminem also was featured on B.o.B’s Grammy-nominated “Airplanes, Part II” remix. Porn Babe Sasha Grey to be "Space Bound" in Eminem Video

After appearing alongside R&B (that’s “rack & butt”) superstar Rihanna in his last video, tow-headed rapper Eminem is kicking the sexiness factor up a notch with his latest music video for “Space Bound,” the fourth single from his Recovery album. He’ll be starring alongside retired porn star Sasha Grey and acting out the narrative contained in the song’s lyrics. This isn’t Sasha’s first time with mainstream acting, the 23-year-old beauty, whose performance in Anal Cavity Search 6 won her the AVN Award for Best Anal Sex Scene last year, made her big breakthrough in 2009 as the star of Steven Soderbergh ‘s acclaimed film The Girlfriend Experience . She has also recently had a recurring naked role as a fictionalized version of herself on the HBO comedy Entourage . It makes sense that she would team up with Eminem, seeing as how she likes to make things melt in her mouth.

For Discussion: Shouldn’t The Grammy’s Be Reflective Of What’s Popular In Society? Steve Stoute Thinks So…

Yesterday, former music executive Steve Stoute let loose a scathing letter to the Grammy committee chastising their use of today’s most popular artists to sell the award show, without properly crediting them with statues for the categories in which they are nominated. Over the course of my 20-year history as an executive in the music business and as the owner of a firm that specializes in in-culture advertising, I have come to the conclusion that the Grammy Awards have clearly lost touch with contemporary popular culture. My being a music fan has left me with an even greater and deeper sense of dismay — so much so that I feel compelled to write this letter. Where I think that the Grammys fail stems from two key sources: (1) over-zealousness to produce a popular show that is at odds with its own system of voting and (2) fundamental disrespect of cultural shifts as being viable and artistic. As an institution that celebrates artistic works of musicians, singers, songwriters, producers and technical specialists, we have come to expect that the Grammys upholds all of the values that reflect the very best in music that is born from our culture. Unfortunately, the awards show has become a series of hypocrisies and contradictions, leaving me to question why any contemporary popular artist would even participate. How is it possible that in 2001 The Marshall Mathers LP — an album by Eminem that ushered in the Bob Dylan of our time — was beaten out by Steely Dan (no disrespect) for Album Of The Year? While we cannot solely utilize album sales as the barometer, this was certainly not the case. Not only is Eminem the best-selling artist of the last decade, but The Marshall Mathers LP was a critical and commercial success that sold over 10 million albums in the United States (19 million worldwide), while Steely Dan sold less than 10% of that amount and came and went as quietly as a church mouse. Or consider even that in 2008 at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, after going into the night as the most-nominated artist, Kanye West’s Graduation was beaten out for Album Of The Year by Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters. (This was the first time in 43 years that a jazz album won this category.) While there is no doubt in my mind of the artistic talents of Steely Dan or Herbie Hancock, we must acknowledge the massive cultural impact of Eminem and Kanye West and how their music is shaping, influencing and defining the voice of a generation. It is this same cultural impact that acknowledged the commercial and critical success of Michael Jackson’s Thriller in 1984. What say you? Do you feel that the Grammy’s are representative of today modern pop culture? Go to HipHopWired to read more of Stoute’s letter
