Eminem, Jay-Z Fans Travel Across U.S. For Detroit Concert

‘You’ll never see anything like it again,’ one fan says of hip-hop legends’ joint show. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Eminem and Jay-Z (file) Photo: Getty Images Very rarely do two hip-hop titans of Eminem and Jay-Z’s caliber team up to mount a series of stadium shows for their legions of rabid fans. Still, it’s astonishing to see the lengths that Shady and Hov heads would go to see the pair onstage. Their fans crisscrossed the country to see the duo light up the stage at Comerica Park in Em’s hometown of Detroit. The Thursday (September 2) event is the first stop on the duo’s Home and Home Tour and their followers showed major support; braving a possible downpour and donning Jay and Em memorabilia. “We’re all psyched,” said one fan who had rolled to the concert with three other homies. “How many times do you get to see Eminem play in his [hometown of] Detroit?” The fan, sporting a Jigga/Eminem T-shirt, added that the outing was really special because it was the first live show he’d attended. “The fact that it’s Eminem and Jay-Z just helps a lot.” Kipper revealed that he and his buddy J.T. traveled from Green Bay, Wisconsin, to take in the show. “I … came down to [see] something different, something big. This is the biggest concert of the year,” he marveled. “You’ll never see anything like it again.” Two of the rappers’ most dedicated fans not only crossed state lines to catch the Comerica show but even employed their passports, trekking from Ottawa, Canada, for the collabo show. “I really hope Eminem plays ‘Going Through Changes’ [from Recovery ]. I really like that song,” said Karen who, along with her friend, had fashioned homemade tees emblazoned with lyrics from The Eminem Show ‘s “Superman” and two Jay-Z’s smashes, “Run This Town” and “99 Problems.” Another fan, Jay, who traveled from Pittsburgh, was happy that Em was giving back to his hometown in the form of a major musical event. “He should show the love from where he came from. They helped him to get where he’s at. The least [he] could do is put on a big-bang show for ’em [and] show some respect,” he said. He added that he was checking out the show to see some of the game’s most talented MCs show their skills. “I mean, the best two lyricists to ever do it [are performing]. So, I’m trying to come and get some knowledge real quick.” Not even bad weather could stop fans from seeing the Grammy-winning legends hit the stage. “I’m just so pumped to see it,” “D” said. “I’ll see it in the rain, I don’t care.” One concertgoer, who donned a tank top that read “#1 Fan,” had a personal message for Shady: “Eminem if you ever see this, my name is Lindsay and I go to Michigan State and you should totally call me.” Are you going to see Jay-Z and Eminem in concert? Eminem And Jay-Z: By The Numbers

Before their Home and Home Tour kicks off, we size up the superstars’ stats. By Gil Kaufman Eminem and Jay-Z Photo: Kristian Dowling/ Getty Images Cincinnati Bengals wide-receiving duo Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens refer to themselves as the Batman and Robin of the NFL, but in the hip-hop world, Jay-Z and Eminem are more like the Batman and Superman of music. And just like it’s rare to see the two titans of comics together in the same panel, you know it’s a special occasion when Slim Shady and Jigga team up for a live show. That’s why fans are freaking out about the first of four planned joint concerts between the dynamic duo, which kick off at Em’s hometown stadium, Comerica Park , on Thursday night and wind up next weekend in Jay’s backyard at Yankee Stadium on September 12 and 13. Nobody knows who the pair will bring onstage as special guests or what they’ll play , though we did learn Wednesday that VMA nominee B.o.B will open all four dates . But how do the massive careers of these two titans measure up? Both have sold tens of millions of albums and played to hundreds of thousands of fans during their decade-plus in the public eye, and each brings a unique strength and style. Let’s break down their numbers to get a sense of what led up to this historic collabo: On the Charts Eminem has been a chart titan for his entire career, posting six #1 albums in a row on the Billboard 200, along with four #1 singles on the Billboard singles chart. According to Nielsen SoundScan, his U.S. album sales are 38.3 million, with an additional 30.5 million U.S. downloads on songs where he’s the lead artist. His best-selling download to date is “Lose Yourself,” which SoundScan reports has sold 2.9 million copies, while his feature on the Akon tune “Smack That” pads his r

B.o.B Set To Open Eminem/Jay-Z Detroit, NYC Shows

VMA nominee will join the superstar duo on stops at Comerica Park and Yankee Stadium. By Jayson Rodriguez B.o.B Photo: Lollapalooza Jay-Z and Eminem will have some company with them during their back-to-back Detroit shows at Comerica Park later this week, and then again when the duo hit New York’s Yankee Stadium. One of B.o.B’s managers, music-industry vet T.J. Chapman, wrote a not-so-thinly-veiled message on Twitter indicating that the VMA nominee is set to open for the two superstar MCs. “I’m excited about heading to Detroit tomorrow for a few days,” Chapman wrote late Tuesday night. “B.o.B is performing @ Tiger Stadium w/ GUESS WHO & WHO????” Jay and Em are of course scheduled to perform at the Detroit Tigers’ new stadium (the team’s old ballpark was known as Tiger Stadium) this Thursday and Friday. A label representative for B.o.B had no comment when contacted by MTV News on Wednesday (September 1). The Atlanta rapper’s other manager, Brian “B.Rich” Richardson, wrote on Twitter on Wednesday that his client would also open for the superstar duo during their New York residency in two weeks, slated for September 13 and 14 in the Bronx. “New York & Detroit, B.o.B is gonna open up for @EMINEM! and @JayZ!!!” Richardson wrote . The buzz for the twin pair of concerts continues to build. This week, Jay-Z and the Yankees unveiled co-branded paraphernalia in honor of the New York performances: Jerseys, T-shirts and hats featuring Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3 insignia will adorn items alongside the team’s classic interlocking “NY” logo. Fans got a small preview of the much-anticipated pairing earlier this summer when Eminem and Jay-Z visited the “Late Show With David Letterman.” Both MCs performed, and later Eminem delivered the show’s trademark Top 10 list, while Jay-Z sat for an interview with Letterman. The MTV Video Music Awards air live on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. By James Montgomery Linkin Park on the set of their “Catalyst” music video Photo: Warner Bros. Linkin Park just premiered their murky, mercurial video for “The Catalyst,” and for the second consecutive week, the song is #1 on Billboard rock songs chart, but so far, they’ve yet to perform the song live. Taylor Swift’s ‘Mine’ Recalls Other Pop-Culture Love Stories

Taylor’s flash forward calls up images from ‘The Notebook,’ Guns N’ Roses videos and more. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift and Toby Hemingway in “Mine” Photo: Big Machine Records Taylor Swift’s “Mine” video, directed by Roman White, travels forward in time as it tells a love story from beginning to end. But in its imagery, the clip also goes back in time, referencing some familiar moments in pop culture. Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You” : When Swift’s character remembers the fights her parents used to have, her memories mirror Clarkson’s attempts to exorcise the demons of her past to find love in her future. “The Notebook” : Granted, any time fans of chick flicks see two good-looking people very much in love, they think of “The Notebook.” And like Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, Swift and her love interest, played by Toby Hemingway, spent some romantic time in a boat. “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” : “Mine” plays some head games with its viewers, and fantasy and reality are sometimes hard to distinguish from one another — much like the dreamlike ups and downs of the love affair between Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) in Michel Gondry’s 2004 flick. “November Rain” : The fact that Taylor’s wedding scene reminds us of that great scene in the Guns N’ Roses video when Stephanie Seymour and Axl Rose emerge from the church is maybe a bit unsettling. “Love the Way You Lie” : Much like in the recent Eminem and Rihanna video, Taylor and Toby have an epic fight in a kitchen. At least they’re less dysfunctional than Dominic and Megan. Britney Spears’ Fantasy : Brit’s perfume ad features the same “flash into the future” structure after the pop star in question locks eyes with a would-be suitor. Taylor Swift videos : Yeah, Swift even references herself in “Mine.” The video’s loose definition of time and space recalls her “Romeo and Juliet”-inspired clip for “Love Story” and her VMA-nominated “Fifteen.” This time, however, Taylor’s growing up, not looking back. What pop-culture references have you spotted in Taylor Swift’s “Mine”? Talk about it in the comments. Related Videos Taylor Swift’s ‘Mine’ Premieres Related Artists Taylor Swift

Jay-Z Endorsing Limited-Run Line Of Yankee Memorabilia

Merchandise will include T-shirts, baseball caps and more to coincide with Yankee Stadium shows with Eminem next month. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay-Z Photo: Nick Laham/ Getty Images If Jay-Z made the Yankee hat more famous than the Yankees did like he claims in “Empire State of Mind,” now the rapper has the chance to prove it. He’s partnered with the championship baseball team to produce a limited run of Jay-Z-endorsed memorabilia, from T-shirts to sweatshirts to fitted caps, to coincide with his and Eminem’s performances at Yankee Stadium next month. The shows are scheduled for September 13 and 14 in the Bronx; the pair will also perform September 3 and 4 at Detroit’s Comerica Park. The co-branded merchandise goes on sale beginning August 30 at Yankee Stadium and will be on sale until September 14. Eminem spoke to Billboard.com on Friday (August 27) about the joint performances and said there won’t be any one-upmanship going on between himself and Jay-Z. (Sorry Tigers fans, sounds like there won’t be any Eminem/Detroit memorabilia available.) “Nah, I don’t think it’ll be anything like a competition,” Eminem said. “For the most part, me and Jay just want people to come out and have a good time. We want them to enjoy the music.” The Detroit MC was reserved when pressed for details regarding the event. He wouldn’t confirm set lists, guest appearances or whether he and Jay-Z would take the stage together at the same time. The pair collaborated once in the past on Jay-Z’s “Renegade,” which Eminem produced for the Brooklyn rapper’s The Blueprint album. “I don’t want to get into it too much,” Eminem said. “I don’t want to give anything away. But … I think it’ll be good. “Hopefully it’ll be songs that everyone is familiar with,” he added. Eminem’s Recovery: What Is The Secret Of Its Success?

Experts point to radio hits and a starved fanbase as the main factors. By Paul Cantor Eminem Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage Eminem is dominating the charts like it’s 2000 all over again, when his second album, The Marshall Mathers LP, spent eight weeks at the top spot on Billboard ‘s top 200 and went on to sell 9 million copies in the United States alone. His latest LP, Recovery, isn’t as big of a blockbuster just yet, but in the current music-industry climate, it’s killing. The album has spent seven non-consecutive weeks at #1, the first hip-hop act to do so since Outkast’s double-LP Speakerboxxx/The Love Below in late 2003/ early 2004. A lot of Eminem’s chart success can be attributed to a very old-school source: radio hits. His first two singles, “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie,” have been staples on top 40 stations since they dropped. “Radio still makes hits, and hits make artists relevant outside of their core consumer base,” Complex Editor in Chief Noah Callahan-Bever told MTV News. “That’s why you see that aberration in Em’s sales on Recovery vs. Relapse. To a 16-year-old, Eminem was bordering on being their older brother/ sister’s favorite artist, but ‘Love the Way You Lie’ has not only re-excited Em’s existing fans — now mostly in their mid-20s to mid-40s — but reintroduced him to new generation of teenagers for whom Relapse didn’t register.” New York Times music writer Jon Caramanica for thinks Em’s fanbase has also been starved. In a sense, they’ve been waiting for something worth buying from him. “Eminem has been around for long enough to develop different pockets of fans: total loyalists, casual listeners, people who like only specific songs or sorts of songs,” he explained. “That he’s continuing to sell week after week is reflective of the fact that all of these groups don’t get activated at the same time. There are still people out there who might buy an Eminem album but haven’t, and each week, it seems, a few more do.” But can Em’s reign at the top continue? “I believe Em has a couple more weeks on top of the charts, even if he gets knocked out of #1 a few times before October 1st,” Vibe Editorial Director Datwon Thomas said. “He has two mega-concerts where he’s headlining a hometown show with Jay-Z in Detroit and then opening for Jay-Z at Yankee Stadium in New York. The amount of media and fan fervor for these events alone will spur people to grab both artists’ albums from their respective catalogs. [And] if Em can build on that momentum and release another smash of a hit from this album, he’ll be OK well into the holiday season.” Working his album through Christmas seems like it might be an option, if only because his record label, Aftermath/Interscope, appears committed to going the whole 12 rounds with Recovery. “Nowadays, [labels] push [albums] until the first-week sales and then generally abandon ship,” Callahan-Bever said. “With Recovery, it’s clear that Interscope knew they had a record with legs and went out of their way to push it. ‘Love the Way You Lie’ just connects to people in that really special, emotive way that only one or two pop songs a year do, and that is just undeniable.” Will Eminem rule the charts until Christmas? Katy Perry, Fantasia Look To Unseat Eminem On Charts

Perry’s Teenage Dream expected to take top spot from Recovery. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry Photo: Chelsea Lauren/ FilmMagic It’s been a long, record-setting summer for Eminem’s smash Recovery , but Slim Shady’s chart dominance could be challenged next week by two strong women with something to prove. Em’s held the #1 spot on the album charts for seven of the nine weeks Recovery has been in stores, with its other two weeks spent at #2. But he could be pushed down to the #3 position next week thanks to the debuts of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream and Fantasia’s Back to Me , according to a Billboard . Citing unnamed “industry prognosticators,” the trade pub put Perry on track to sell between 170,000 and 200,000 copies of Teenage Dream by the end of this week’s reporting period on Sunday (August 29). Fantasia, meanwhile, is on target for a #2 bow and sales in the 120,000-140,000 range. This week, Eminem had little major competition, and he was able to hold on to the #1 slot with 116,000 sales of Recovery . For Perry, the debut would easily best the chart arrival of her breakthrough 2008 effort One of the Boys , which debuted on the charts and peaked at #9 with 47,000 sales; it went on to sell more than one million copies in the U.S. and seven million worldwide. Perry is looking to both beat the sophomore slump and cement her status as one of the world’s pop icons. A #2 debut would also be a high-water mark for Fantasia, who has struggled through a difficult period lately that included a suicide attempt and tabloid headlines regarding her relationship with a man in the midst of a divorce. If the former “American Idol” champ snags the #2 spot it would mark the best chart debut of her career, though her previous album, Fantasia , sold 133,000 copies when it reached #19 spot in 2006. While numbers were not available at press time, it’s even possible that Slim Shady could get a bit of a run from Usher, whose new EP, Versus , also dropped this week. Eminem’s Recovery Holds On To #1 Billboard Slot

Rapper retains his position despite four new names in top five. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images How strong is Eminem ‘s run at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart? In addition to locking down the #1 spot for seven out of the nine weeks since its release, Slim Shady will manage to hold his perch next week despite a rush of four new titles debuting in the top five. The rapper, who was just added to the roster of performers at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards , will keep his pole position again thanks to sales of 116,000, which pushed his to-date total above the 2.2 million mark, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. He also fended off four contenders, led by R&B singer Kem , whose Intimacy was well behind at #2 (74,000), followed by the latest from sandpaper-voiced singer Ray LaMontagne and his band the Pariah Dogs , God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise (#3, 64,000), metal icons Iron Maiden with Final Frontier (#4, 63,000) and country singer Trace Adkins ‘ Cowboy’s Back in Town (#5, 50,000). The rest of the top 10: Lady Antebellum , Need You Now (#6, 32,000); the former #1 album from Arcade Fire , Suburbs , which dropped five spots to #7 on sales of 31,000 for a three-week total nearing 250,000; Justin Bieber ‘s My World 2.0 (#8, 30,000); the debut of mellow singer David Gray ‘s Foundling (#9, 25,000); and another new face, rock legend-turned-dustbowl-balladeer John Mellencamp ‘s No Better Than This (#10, 24,000). The Camp Rock 2 soundtrack had a short stay in the top 10, as it fell 10 spots in week two to #13 (23,000), while VMA-nominated Mumford & Sons ‘ Sigh No More continued a march up the charts, scooting up one to #19 as sales picked up by nearly 20 percent to 17,000. And Hey Monday landed at #25 with their latest, Beneath It All (14,000). After weeks of domination of the iTunes singles chart, Eminem’s iron grip was finally broken this week by (who else?) Lil Wayne. The incarcerated rapper’s “Right Above It” collabo with Drake took over the #1 spot, pushing Em’s Rihanna hookup, “Love the Way You Lie,” to #4, as Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” hung in at the #2 spot right in front of Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite.” Breaking into the chart this week was Nelly with “Just a Dream” at #7. Though iTunes does not release specific sales data, suffice it to say that Em held the top spot on the album tally again, followed by LaMontagne, a Lady Antebellum iTunes session, Arcade Fire, Gray, Mumford & Sons, Antebellum’s resurgent Need You Now, the chart debut of Maroon 5’s Hands All Over, Kem, and Maiden. He’s been the chart champ most of the summer (save for bumps by Arcade Fire and Avenged Sevenfold ), but it looks like Eminem’s Billboard domination could end for good with the release of Katy Perry ‘s Teenage Dream, the highly anticipated second album from the singer that has already spawned two massive hits. Also vying for the top is the third effort from former “American Idol” champ Fantasia , and an Usher remix/deluxe repackaging of Raymond v. Raymond called Versus. Related Artists Eminem
