Jacob Lusk Brings Himself to Tears

It’s very early on season 10 of American Idol, but one thing appears clear: we’re in for many weeks of contrasting auditions and artists. Take John Wayne Schulz and his restrained, collected, acoustic cover of “Landslide.” Simple, straightforward, impressive. Now, compare that to the emotion delivered by Jacob Lusk last night, as this hopeful scatted one moment and soared the next while giving viewers a rendition of “God Bless the Child.” He even brought himself to hysterical tears by doing so. Might this be the John Boehner of American Idol contestants? Watch for yourself: Jacob Lusk – God Bless the Child

‘American Idol’ Finds Tragic Stories, Aerosmith Groupies In Milwaukee

Jerome Bell, Scott Dangerfield, Alyson Jados and Scotty McCreery stand out in week two. By Gil Kaufman Steven Tyler on Wednesday’s “American Idol” Photo: FOX The second week of “American Idol” auditions brought our judges to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the first visit to the beer-and-cheese-loving Midwestern town busted out of the gate with a surefire star in the making, as well as the by-now-familiar slow-motion glamour montage complete with Steven Tyler yelps and profane bleeps. The trip also served up one of the most touching “Idol” audition moments of all time and a healthy roster of talented young teens. Though the focus was to be on the auditioners this year, the episode opened with Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler doing an endearing a cappella duet of Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion” accompanied by an Altoids tin and some cheeky lyrics about bad singing. As if we could forget that Tyler is a world-famous rock star, right? But that was soon replaced by the froggy voice of Garner, North Carolina, native Scotty McCreery, 16, who wowed the judges off the bat with his perfect country rumble through Josh Turner’s “Your Man” and Travis Tritt’s “Put Some Drive in Your Country.” Both songs sounded like the work of a career cowboy crooner rather than a high school baseball prospect. “Well hellfire, save matches, f— a duck and see what hatches!” Tyler enthused to the howls of the whole “Idol” crew. “That’s beautiful.” Host Ryan Seacrest humored budding radio host Joe Repka, 19, an awkward communications major who lost the panel off the bat with his lame “radio voice,” then set them howling like dogs with a warbly operatic slog through Billy Joel’s “The Longest Time.” Emma Henry, 15, said she’s watched the show since she was 5, and her raspy, emotional “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper had rough spots but won Tyler over with its unique character. “I want this so bad; this is what my life is about,” the emo teen wept after judge Jennifer Lopez said no and Jackson reluctantly put her through. “Don’t disappoint us,” he cautioned. One of the bright spots in an otherwise grim day of auditions in Milwaukee was colorful belter Naima Adedapo, who killed it with a gospel-tinged slow-and-easy version of Donny Hathaway’s “For All We Know,” which was powerful, self-assured and oh-so-buttery. “I like you a lot,” said Lopez, who called Adedapo the whole package. They also gave a thumbs-up to wedding/ bar mitzvah singer Jerome Bell , 27, when the New York native slayed Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” thanks to high energy and a sugar-sweet falsetto. “So good, so good,” Tyler gushed. One thing has already become clear this season: Singing Lady Gaga is a terrible idea in an “Idol” audition. Every time. And don’t show up with giant toothbrushes or wearing your Civil War re-enactment costumes, because that mess doesn’t wash. Admitting that they lowered the age limit in part because of Bieber Fever, Seacrest said there have been a lot of stellar 15-year-olds so far this year, with startlingly confident California native Thia Megia proving them right after a soulful stroll through Adele’s “Chasing Pavements.” She set off an avalanche of 15-year-old gold-ticket winners, providing a glimpse of the youthquake that is sure to shake the Hollywood rounds. It’s unclear why 22-year-old Harvard grad and White House intern Molly De-Wolf Swensen even needs “Idol,” but the statuesque blonde proved she has some other skills with a smoky “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” that appeared to catch Tyler’s eye. “Who knew what was goin’ on at the White House?” Randy said, with Tyler adding, “That’s great. You got attitude, you know where to put it, geez, that was beautiful!” Day two brought more R&B belters, a (terrible) Obama impersonator, an operatic destruction of Bieber’s “Baby” and a Minnie Riperton slayer with some serious bad attitude. Then there was mild-mannered awkward loner accountant/funeral singer (is that even a thing?) Steve Beghun, who did a Jason Mraz-meets-Josh Groban warble that Tyler called “disturbingly great” and which was just good enough to get him to Hollywood. Milwaukee student teacher Scott Dangerfield, 22, looked like an indie-rock slacker but came on like a blue-eyed soulster when he sang Amos Lee’s “Dreamin’.” It felt a bit mannered but was so compelling to Lopez that she called it her favorite audition so far, counseling him to keep the grown-out Bieber hair and nerdy glasses. Hire a rock star and you’ll get a few groupies, such as self-avowed Chicago rocker girl and bartender Ali Jados, 26, who immediately caught her idol’s fancy. “Wow,” Tyler said wide-eyed while looking over the raven-haired beauty with the voluptuous mouth. “You look like you could be one of my … nope, I can’t say it. … One of my friends. ” She knew just what song to pick, too, growling out a cover of the Beatles’ “Come Together,” which Aerosmith famously covered in the disastrous 1978 “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” movie, segueing into a duet with Tyler on Aerosmith’s “Dream On.” Tyler appreciated that she sang one of his songs but said he was scared by how pitchy her performance was, though Lopez liked her stage presence and performance quality. Randy gave it a no while Lopez said yes, so it was up to Tyler, who faked left and then sent Jados to the next round. The night ended with one of the all-time “Idol” audition tearjerker stories, courtesy of Chicago’s Chris Medina, 26, who told the tragic tale of his fianc

Steven Tyler’s Best ‘American Idol’ Quotes From Milwaukee

‘Slap that baby on the ass and call me Christmas!’ new judge says after one surprising audition. By Kara Warner Steven Tyler on Wednesday’s “American Idol” Photo: FOX In addition to the excitement and anticipation that is involved in watching the audition rounds of “American Idol,” the unexpected remarks that come out of new judge Steven Tyler’s mouth are quickly becoming just as (if not more) entertaining to listen to as the contestants’ vocal stylings. We weren’t sure Tyler could top his performance last week , but mere minutes into Wednesday’s (January 26) episode (after opening the show singing an a cappella “Idol” version of “Sweet Emotion” with Randy Jackson), we knew we were in for another night of Tyler treats. Here are our favorites from the Milwaukee auditions:

‘Breaking Dawn’ Star Peter Facinelli Says Shooting Final Scene Was ‘Sad’

‘It got a little melancholy,’ the actor said of the recently filmed last scene of ‘The Twilight Saga’ finale. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Peter Facinelli Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Production on the two parts of “Breaking Dawn” is expected to stretch well into April, with the cast eventually departing Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to finish up shooting on the final “Twilight Saga” films in Vancouver, Canada. But whereas the makers of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” chose to save that franchise’s final scene until the very end of production, the “Breaking Dawn” cast has already shot the last scene of their finale film — and it apparently was a pretty gloomy experience. “The other day when we shot that ending sequence, we knew that was the ending of the last two movies and it got a little melancholy,” Peter Facinelli, who plays Dr. Carlisle Cullen, told us on the red carpet at the Golden Globes on Sunday. “It was sad.” While the 37-year-old actor wouldn’t delve into detail about the scene — “Lots of vampires,” he teased — Robert Pattinson , also walking the Globes carpet, dished about the lengthy climax toward the end of “Breaking Dawn, Part 2.” “There’s like a 27-minute sequence in the final sequence, and it takes forever to shoot,” he revealed. “There’s about 75 people in it. Being on a piece of fake snow surrounded by green screen for like a month, it’s driving me absolutely insane.” Facinelli, too, admitted that filming the final fight has meant the cast must suffer through a “brutal” production schedule, but he credited director Bill Condon with creating a calm, creative working environment. “Bill Condon’s fantastic,” he said. “He’s such a great actors’ director. He’s really collaborative. He’s a joy to work with. He’s very relaxed all the time. You never see him sweat.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

Steven Tyler: An ‘American Idol’ Cheat Sheet

As Aerosmith frontman kicks off TV gig, we look back on the rocker’s decades-long highs and lows as part of iconic band. By Gil Kaufman “American Idol” judge Steven Tyler Photo: Tony Duran / FOX Steven Tyler has seen it all. The famously loud and proud singer of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Aerosmith has experienced the highest highs of the music business, as well as the deepest depths of career (and personal) misery. In other words, he’s perfectly qualified to be a judge on “American Idol.” Though his selection as part of the new three-judge panel on America’s favorite reality singing show was somewhat of a left-field surprise to his bandmates, the program’s fans and many critics, Tyler seems excited and enthusiastic about the gig as season 10 gets under way Wednesday night. He recently admitted that he hadn’t really watched the show before because of his busy schedule with the Boston-bred hard rock icons (and, ahem, the occasional trip to rehab), but Tyler told The Daily Beast that he sees his “Idol” run as a new wrinkle in his four-decade-plus career. “Television is just an extension of what I’ve always done,” he said. “I don’t think people have seen that Italian side of me, the side of me that can work a room like nobody’s business. It’s what I am. It’s something that people haven’t seen unless there was a party backstage after a show because that ominous person that’s out of his mind onstage is not the same guy that’s sitting in front of cameras.” He’s been everywhere, seen everything and lived to tell about it. Clearly, if there’s anyone who knows what it takes to be a star — and to have enduring success — it’s Tyler. He formed Aerosmith in Boston in 1970, along with guitarist and longtime foil Joe Perry, winning over a loyal fanbase thanks to their white-hot, blues-drenched live sets and Tyler’s magnetic stage presence. The band signed with Columbia Records in 1972 and began an ultra-successful run that spanned the remainder of the decade, releasing classics albums like Toys in the Attic and Rocks, along with iconic singles like “Dream On,” “Same Old Song and Dance,” “Sweet Emotion” and “Walk This Way.” Long story short, the success led to excess and the band limped into the ’80s without Perry. A career resurgence in the late ’80s and early ’90s put Aerosmith back on top of their game with a new generation of radio-friendly hits and the bandmates’ newfound sobriety. In the 2000s, Aerosmith were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and continued to tour and release albums. But in 2009, during an Aerosmith gig at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota, Tyler fell off the stage into the crowd, leading to the cancellation of their summer tour and then a string of rumors that he’d left the band to pursue a solo career. Yet, despite all of that, Aerosmith still hit the road again this past summer, with Tyler very much onboard after another stint in rehab. So, why, after one of the most successful runs in rock history, would the frontman head to “American Idol”? Sirius satellite radio host Howard Stern asked his old friend that question on Tuesday morning (January 18), and Tyler said it made perfect sense to him. “It was just taking something else other than Aerosmith, it doesn’t mean the band’s over,” said Tyler, 62, noting that last summer’s tour was one of the best he could remember, but that he needed a bit of a break to help him heal from his chronic foot condition. “I needed a rest for [my foot] and it was just something else I could get into. I wanted to see if this would be a good fit.” Setting aside his belief that no one can really be a star without paying their dues in a million dingy clubs (though his wording was much more colorful on Stern’s show), Tyler said he realized it’s a new day in the music biz and, after whittling down 700 contestants to 20, he finally gets the show. “It’s something that I’ve never got into because I never caught the rhythm of the show. When you watch it, you kind of fall in love with this guy … there’s some people who sing their ass off.” After seeing a couple dozen singers who blew him away, Tyler admitted that he’s looking for the whole package: vocals, songwriting ability and the originality that marks a star. “I just thought, ‘What the f—? I get to sit next to J. Lo? … I’m looking for the [Janis] Joplin, the Christina Aguilera. Someone that’s not being Vocoded and trimmed and primped and done up. I’m looking for that natural person that can go in and sing … and the times that I found one, I teared up out there.” As for whether the show will break up the band, which has endured epic battles with drugs, jealousy and managerial interference, Tyler said, simply, hell no. ” ‘Idol’ ‘s gonna take this band up 10 notches!” he promised. Mariah Carey Expecting Twins, Nick Cannon Confirms

‘We are having twins,’ Cannon said on his radio show on Thursday. By Jocelyn Vena Mariah Carey Photo: Jemal Countess/Getty Images After accidentally calling her baby bump “they,” Mariah Carey had everyone speculating that she and Nick Cannon were having twins. And on his radio show on Thursday morning (December 16), Cannon confirmed as much. “We are having twins,” he told his listeners. He said that while the couple has been trying to keep details about the pregnancy as private as possible, Carey let the news slip to the president and first lady when she spoke to them backstage at TNT’s “Christmas in Washington 2010” on Sunday. “They, ironically enough, questioned my wife about, you know, ‘So, what are you having, are you having twins?’ ” he recalled of the conversation Carey had with the Obamas. “And at this point, she hadn’t told anybody anything because doctors advised us to keep it to ourselves until we get further along. And because of the excitement, because of the emotion, she was overwhelmed [and] she shared with the president and first lady that we are having twins.” On Wednesday, Cannon danced around the twins question in an interview. “It’s a touchy issue, because you never want to speak on too much stuff too early, but my wife, at one time, she referred to her stomach as ‘they,’ and that probably wasn’t the wrong thing for her to do,” he said to E! News . “That’s all I’m gonna say.” The couple has yet to reveal the due date, but Carey admitted back in October that finally telling everyone she was pregnant after months of speculation was a “relief.” “I feel like it made everyone else around me a little more relaxed,” she said on Cannon’s radio show about making the announcement. “I feel like they were extra super-cautious about everything, yet not, because they didn’t know they were allowed to be.” Related Artists Mariah Carey Nick Cannon

T.I. Says Pharrell Asked Him To Vent On ‘Get Back Up’

‘I just need you to get those same sentiments, those same feelings on a record,’ Tip recalls the producer telling him. By Hillary Crosley T.I. Photo: MTV News It’s no secret that T.I. is experiencing a difficult time in his career. The Atlanta rapper was on the cusp of releasing his comeback album, then titled King Uncaged, following a one-year prison stint when he was arrested once again. Tip was sentenced to 11 months for violating his parole and shipped back to the same Arkansas facility he’d just left. But through it all, the MC found inspiration for the track “Get Back Up” from his now-titled No Mercy album. “Yeah, ‘Get Back Up,’ produced by Pharrell of the Neptunes, one of the most passionate, genuine, artistic guys that I’ve met in the game and has had a hand in my movement since my very first album,” T.I. said. “He was one of the first big producers to work with me.” Tip said the pair reconnected and were recording for his then-forthcoming seventh LP when disaster struck. “Prior to my arrest, we had done about three or four songs, considerably hot records, some of which you’ll definitely be hearing on this project,” T.I. said during our exclusive “RapFix Live” interview . “But … I left out the studio, and the next day, I go to jail, or I get arrested, which took me in a whole ‘nother, different direction. “When all of these things started coming to pass, Pharrell called me like, ‘Hey, man, somebody somewhere is trying to tell you something,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, you know, that may be,’ ” the MC continued. “Then we had a conversation at length about how I felt about the media’s portrayal of my circumstances. And he said, ‘You know what? That’s what you need to say in a song.’ And I say, ‘Man, I ain’t talking about no music right now, P.’ And he say, ‘But that’s what they wanna hear, that’s what you need to tell ’em. Just ride with me on this. I’mma get it to you, and I just need you to get those same sentiments, those same feelings on a record.’ I said, ‘All right, man, give it to me.’ ” It didn’t take the talented producer long to craft a beat perfect for Tip’s emotions. “So it might’ve been a week or two later, he called me and it might’ve been at 4 o’clock in the morning, like, ‘I got it!’ ” T.I. recalled. “I immediately heard the potential, I immediately heard that this was a special record, a personal record, a statement record … and one that could be delivered with humility and not as defensive as it may sound in conversation if I said it.” What do you think of “Get Back Up”? Young Money president Mack Maine tells MTV News clique aims to film clip for Pink Friday track in December. By Hillary Crosley, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj Photo: Taylor Hill/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj recently experienced something few new artists can claim: seeing your debut earn the #2 spot on the Billboard albums chart. The Queens native’s Pink Friday LP sold a little more than 375,000 copies in its first week of release, falling just behind Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Now the MC is prepping the video for Friday ‘s “Moment 4 Life,” which features Young Money labelmate Drake. “She’s shooting hopefully on December 20,” Young Money president Mack Maine told MTV News. “We’re still trying to work out the date for the next video with [Nicki] and Drake for the ‘Moment 4 Life’ video. That’s the next project.” We also spoke to the Young Money head about Nicki’s success and what it has meant to the Miami-by-way-of-New Orleans clan. “It was [a special moment], especially with her being a female in this day and time too,” Maine said. “Also, people don’t know that I was a big factor in making sure that Nicki got signed with us and also just sticking with her through ups and downs. “Just to see her go from a seed being planted to a … forest, just a beautiful flawless forest … the world recognizes. Big ups to Nicki, she worked hard,” he continued. “She represents the female gender, and she basically delivered. There were a lot of odds against her and she defeated all of that and, for her to deliver like that, I gotta say congratulations.” True to form, when news of her sales reached the animated MC , she was overcome, Maine recalled. “She was excited. We talked about it and her emotion was crazy,” Maine said. “She basically shed tears, tears of joy. I have to congratulate her and say thank you to all of the fans that supported — without them we wouldn’t be anything. … She wouldn’t be anything.” Are you excited that “Moment 4 Life” is Nicki’s next single?
