What One Former Infinity Ward Employee Thinks Of Ex-IW CEO Vince Zampella

What do Infinity Ward employees think of their bosses? We have a small slice of insight via a recent Linkedin recommendation for former Infinity Ward studio head and CEO Vince Zampella. The recommendation was penned on March 2 (the same period when the original Infinity Ward news was coming to light) by Jesse Heinig, a production coordinator at Infinity Ward from 2004 to 2005. Infinity Ward released Call of Duty 2 in October 2005. Heinig would have been present at Infinity Ward during the company’s hurried rush to finish development on Call of Duty 2 for Activision, a release timed to Xbox 360’s launch that fall. The game was received to stellar reviews. “I had the pleasure of working briefly for Vince and seeing his skills first-hand,” said Heinig, now a freelance writer at WhiteWolf, the company behind a number of major RPGs, including Vampire: The Requiem . “Vince’s history in the game development business should already be legendary. How he, Grant Collier, and Jason West forged Infinity Ward by turning around the talent from a team that was overworked and unhappy with their previous conditions.” Grant Collier is also a former president of Infinity Ward, who left to assume a mysterious “special projects” role within Activision. Jason West, the most recent president, left alongside Zampella. Activision is alleging “insubordination” related to Zampella and West, a claim currently involved in litigation. The state of Infinity Ward after the studio leadership departure remains an open question. It certainly doesn’t comes as much of a surprise other veteran employees are leaving the company , but it’s unknown if these now ex-Infinity Ward employees will follow their former leaders once again. “How this team proceeded to build one of the most successful and enduring franchises of this generation of video games,” he continued. “How the IW studio became synonymous with serious code and good gameplay. Vince is one of the few professionals that I’d call a visionary, in the most fundamental sense of the word: He has a powerful vision and he organizes a team to see it through. He’s able to juggle different divisions seamlessly, handle high-level meetings and interfaces between the team on the ground and the demands of the production studio, and still keep an eye on the final product.” Heinig went on to praise Zampella directly on Linkedin, saying he has “a real imagination” and “knows the ins and outs of what makes gameplay fun and engaging, not just a cost analysis.” He eventually proclaims Zampella doesn’t need his recommendation, citing an interesting industry rumor. “Don’t just take my word for it,” said Heinig. “Rumor in the industry is that EA [Electronic Arts] placed a million-dollar bounty for snapping up any IW studio lead, like Vince. Just the fact that the rumor is out there should speak volumes about how badly people want Vince working on their products.” I hadn’t heard of a million-dollar bounty, but the EA connection isn’t new. An internal Activision memo acquired by G4 showed Activision was seeking e-mails and other documentation about conversations. Have something to share? Sitting on a news tip? E-mail me . Katy Perry is a Sloppy Easter Bunny of the Day

I was making jokes all Easter about dressing up like the Easter Bunny and going to the park to tell the kids I had Easter Eggs hidden up my ass, just to throw their uptight parents off, Then I made jokes about making friends with a black Easter bunny at the mall and going to tag team bitches in costume, unfortunately, I never did either of those things, but my jokes are far more interesting than seeing the shit played out on Katy Perry…mainly because Katy Perry is a sloppy, disgusting, bad skinned monster of a girl who somehow tricked the world into thinking she’s a popstar…when really she should be nothing more than an Employee of the Month at McDonalds. Hacker Disables More Than 100 Cars Remotely

More than 100 drivers in Austin, Texas found their cars disabled or the horns honking out of control, after an intruder ran amok in a web-based vehicle-immobilization system normally used to get the attention of consumers delinquent in their auto payments. Police with Austin’s High Tech Crime Unit on Wednesday arrested 20-year-old Omar Ramos-Lopez, a former Texas Auto Center employee who was laid off last month, and allegedly sought revenge by bricking the cars sold from the dealership’s four Austin-area lots “We initially dismissed it as mechanical failure,” says Texas Auto Center manager Martin Garcia. “We started having a rash of up to a hundred customers at one time complaining. Some customers complained of the horns going off in the middle of the night. The only option they had was to remove the battery.” The dealership used a system called Webtech Plus as an alternative to repossessing vehicles that haven’t been paid for. Operated by Cleveland-based Pay Technologies, the system lets car dealers install a small black box under vehicle dashboards that responds to commands issued through a central website, and relayed over a wireless pager network. The dealer can disable a car’s ignition system, or trigger the horn to begin honking, as a reminder that a payment is due. The system will not stop a running vehicle. Texas Auto Center began fielding complaints from baffled customers the last week in February, many of whom wound up missing work, calling tow trucks or disconnecting their batteries to stop the honking. The troubles stopped five days later, when Texas Auto Center reset the Webtech Plus passwords for all its employee accounts, says Garcia. Then police obtained access logs from Pay Technologies, and traced the saboteur’s IP address to Ramos-Lopez’s AT&T internet service, according to a police affidavit filed in the case. Ramos-Lopez’s account had been closed when he was terminated from Texas Auto Center in a workforce reduction last month, but he allegedly got in through another employee’s account, Garcia says. At first, the intruder targeted vehicles by searching on the names of specific customers. Then he discovered he could pull up a database of all 1,100 Auto Center customers whose cars were equipped with the device. He started going down the list in alphabetical order, vandalizing the records, disabling the cars and setting off the horns. “Omar was pretty good with computers,” says Garcia. The incident is the first time an intruder has abused the no-start system, according to Jim Krueger, co-owner of Pay Technologies. “It was a fairly straightforward situation,” says Krueger. “He had retained a password, and what happened was he went in and created a little bit of havoc.” Krueger disputes that the horns were honking in the middle of the night; he says the horn honking can only be activated between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. First rolled out about 10 years ago, remote immobilization systems are a controversial answer to delinquent car payments, with critics voicing concerns that debtors could suffer needless humiliation, or find themselves stranded during an emergency. Proponents say the systems let financers extend credit to consumers who might otherwise be ineligible for an auto loan. Austin police filed computer intrusion charges against Ramos-Lopez on Tuesday. http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/03/hacker-bricks-cars/ added by: pjacobs51

E-mail to the Anchorage Assembly regarding Dan Sullivan’s $193,000 payout.

Somebody sent this to my e-mail account and I thought it deserved to be seen by everyone in the hopes that it inspires other Anchorage residents to follow suit. To : Assemblyman Patrick Flynn , Assemblyman Bill Starr , Assemblywoman Debbie Ossiander , Assemblyman Matt Claman , Assemblyman Dan Coffey , Assemblywoman Elvi Gray-Jackson , Assemblywoman Sheila Selkregg , Assemblyman Mike Gutierrez , Assemblyman Chris Birch , Assemblywoman Jennifer Johnston We are told that the Municipality of Anchorage’s revenues are so tight that the rescue program of the Anchorage Fire Department has been reduced or eliminated. The reduced municipal revenues have resulted in positions not being filled as they become vacant. Other public employees may have to be laid off from work. Despite these hard financial times, the Assembly approved a $193,000 payment requested by the Municipal Attorney and Mayor Sullivan. The $193,000 is to be paid the George M. Sullivan Trust. When asked about the beneficiaries, Suzanne McVicker, will not disclose the information, stating that the information is “confidential.” For us, these circumstances raise some questions we would ask you, as an assembly member, to answer. 1. What authority gives the Salaries and Emoluments Commission, the Assembly, or Mayor, the power to agree to pay any person after their employment ends $193,000, that is not part of a previously agreed upon pension plan? 2. What legal consideration did the Municipality of Anchorage receive after January 10th, 1982 for a contract obligation to pay $193,000 to the George M. Sullivan Trust. ? 3. When did you first learn about the agreement to extend former Mayor George Sullivan’s life insurance? 4. Did anyone see an original agreement or contract and accompanying documents? 5. Do you know when the insurance company informed the city it would not cover former Mayor George Sullivan as an insured in the employee group insurance plan? 6. Who paid the premiums from 1982 to the present? Is there a record of payments made? 7. Into which city account were these premiums paid? Out of which city account was the payment disbursed? 8. Who authorized the city to collect the insurance premium in 2002? 9. If this was a binding, legal agreement, why did the payment require a vote by the Assembly? 10.Since no insurance policy had been issued, and no employment contract provision required the $193,000 payment, what makes AR No. 2010-33 not the grant of a special privilege prohibited by Article 1, Section 15 of the Alaska Constitution? 11. How is AR No. 2010-33 an appropriation of public money for a public purpose as required by Article IX, Section 6 of the Alaska Constitution? 12. Do you think that Municipal Attorney gave you sufficient and accurate information to make an informed decision? 13. Explain your affirmative vote, please. I don’t believe too many people could fault Anchorage resident for asking the questions contained in this e-mail. You know I think I will send a similar e-mail myself, and if any of you Anchorage residents are so inclined I have linked the names of each of the Assembly members to their e-mails so you can contact them directly.

Gruesome Details of Killer Whale Attack [Whale Attack]

Staff and visitor testimonies reveal exactly how Tilikum, the 22-foot, 20,000lb SeaWorld killer whale , attacked trainer Dawn Brancheau last week (she died of “multiple traumatic injuries and drowning”). And it’s precisely as scary as you might expect. According to this AP report , it was an average day at SeaWorld. About 20 tourists were milling around after the noon show. Some, including Dutch visitor Susanne De Wit, 33, had gathered in front of one of the tank windows for a picture. Above them, Brancheau lay down on the deck to communicate with Tilikum face-to-face, as she had done thousands of times before, according to staffer Jan Topoleski, who monitors trainers’ safety during shows. The whale, the largest in captivity, closed his enormous teeth on her hair and dragged her underwater. De Wit, in front of the tank window, saw the attack unfold. “He was very wild,” she told investigators, “with the trainer still in the whale’s mouth, the whale’s tail was very wild in the water.” Alarms sounded, and staff members rushed to help. Recollections of time vary. Some say it took them ten minutes to find plastic nets, unfurl them, trap the whale and hoist it from the water using a hydraulic lift. Others say it may have been 30. “The whale would not let us have her,” trainer Jodie Ann Tintle said. At one point Tilikum did let go of Brancheau, said another employee, Tanner Grogan, but grabbed her by the foot again before anyone had a chance to react. Even when out of the water, the whale kept its jaws clamped shut around its prize. The team had to pry its mouth open to recover their colleague, who was pronounced dead immediately by paramedics. “Tilly was not giving up Dawn,” Robin Ann Morland, another SeaWorld worker, told the AP . In short: do not fuck with Killer Whales.
