Close That Door–You’re Wasting Energy

Photo: Close the Door Here’s an idea that is so obvious it should be a no-brainer: shut the door and save energy. The Close the Door Campaign is asking retailers to conserve energy by keeping their front doors closed. Why do shops all over the place leave their front door wide open? Do they really think that if it’s closed we won’t go in? … Read the full story on TreeHugger

This last Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas showed several promising companies , and there are sure to be more in January at the next show. EPA Found that Gas Mileage Improved 7% to Record-Breaking 22.4 MPG In 2009 Car Fleet

Photo: Flickr , CC The numbers on the fuel economy of the U.S. car fleet are out, albeit a year behind. But the news are rather good: The EPA report for 2009 shows an improvement of 7% in fuel economy, or 1.4 MPG, bringing the average to 22.4 MPG (kind of a sad record, when you think about it). Another piece of good news is that the ratio of cars to trucks has been shifting back in favor of cars. It has declined “to 40 percent in 2009 models, a decrease of 7 perce… Read the full story on TreeHugger

EPA Nixes External Adaptors from Energy Star Program

Photo via alistairas The Environmental Protection Agency decided that external power adapters aren’t eligible for inclusion in the Energy Star Label program, the reason being that they’re doing too good a job meeting qualifications anyway. Since most external adapters meet qualifications, there’s no point in wasting resources putting them through the labeling process. On the one hand, it makes perfect sense to streamline the program where possible (after all, Energy Star is

BBC Show Claims Home Working Produces More CO2 Than Going To Office

A home office setup in New York We just take it for granted at TreeHugger that working from home saves a huge amount of energy and is great for the environment. But Alex Johnson of Shedworking points us to Costing the Earth , a BBC radio show that claims otherwise, saying “a recent study by independent consultants WSP Environmental found that home workers typically produce almost a third more CO2 in a year than employees based in the office.” It is interesting listening, especially when Alex come… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Wall Plug Concept Warns of Wasted Watts

Images via Yanko Design Designer Muhyeon Kim has created the “Insic Wall Socket” — an outlet that lights up to tell you just how many watts you’re pulling from the grid with whatever it is you just plugged in. The idea is that by instantly seeing how much power we’re using, we’re encouraged to unplug energy hungry devices as quickly as possible. We’d also become more savvy about how much energy we really use during the day, as well as what devices are surprisingly big energy hogs. But while it has its obvious benefits, does an outlet like thi… Read the full story on TreeHugger

We Love Trees, But Can You Have Too Much Of A Good Thing?

Photo: SWNS.COM/ SWNS via the Guardian We are, after all, named TreeHugger , and have noted before on TreeHugger and Planet Green that trees are effective and sophisticated cooling devices, but perhaps one can have too much of a good thing. David Alvand, a civil engineer in Plymouth, Devon, planted a leyland cypress tree in his front yard in 1991 and it is certainly shading h… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Commercial Palm Oil Production in Southeast Asia Violating Indigenous Peoples’ Rights: New Survey

photo: Forest Peoples Programme Take this one as reinforcement of what plenty of environmental NGOs have been saying for some time: The commercial palm oil industry in Indonesia and Malaysia is trampling the rights of indigenous people and destroying rainforests as it rapidly expands. A new report from the Forest Peoples Programme details the damage…. Read the full story on TreeHugger
