When The Checks Stop Coming In… Kodak Files Bankruptcy Because They Are $7 Billi In The Hole!!!

Damn shame that “a picture is worth a thousand words” and not dollars ! Eastman Kodak Co. filed for bankruptcy protection early Thursday morning, after the film pioneer failed to raise fresh cash to fund a long-sputtering turnaround, The Wall Street Journal reported. The 131-year-old company struggled for decades to cope with the emergence of competitors in its film business and the rise of digital technology. But its final pivot — an attempt to transform itself into a company selling printers — proved too costly amid declining film sales and expensive obligations to its retirees. The company said in a statement it has obtained “a fully-committed, $950 million debtor-in-possession credit facility with an 18-month maturity from Citigroup to enhance liquidity and working capital.” It said it believes it has “sufficient liquidity” to continue business operations during Chapter 11. “Kodak is taking a significant step toward enabling our enterprise to complete its transformation,” Kodak CEO Antonio Perez said in a statement. “Chapter 11 gives us the best opportunities to maximize the value in two critical parts of our technology portfolio: our digital capture patents … and our breakthrough printing and deposition technologies, which give Kodak a competitive advantage in our growing digital businesses.” Perez pointed out the fact that the company has effectively moved away from its traditional film operations, “closing 13 manufacturing plants and 130 processing labs, and reducing our workforce by 47,000 since 2003.” “Now we must complete the transformation by further addressing our cost structure and effectively monetizing non-core IP assets,” he said. “We look forward to working with our stakeholders to emerge a lean, world-class, digital imaging and materials science company.” The statement said that the Rochester-based company expects to pay employee wages and benefits and continue customer programs. Subsidiaries of the company outside the US will not be affected by the bankruptcy filing. The voluntary petitions for Chapter 11 business reorganization were filed in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. The filing came as little surprise, with The Wall Street Journal reporting ahead of the announcement that the company was appointing a chief restructuring officer in anticipation of bankruptcy. Shares of Kodak ended Wednesday trading up 4.4 percent at 55 cents, but have fallen 14.6 percent during January, and almost 90 percent over the past 12 months, according to Fact Set data, MarketWatch reported. Eastman Kodak last week unveiled a new, streamlined business structure aimed at increasing productivity, cutting costs and boosting the troubled company’s digital business. Under the new structure, Kodak reduced its number of segments from three to two — the Commercial Segment and Consumer Segment. Kodak previously had three operating units: the graphic communications group, which provided digital equipment and software to printing industries; the consumer digital imaging group, which focused on print images; and film, photofinishing and entertainment. Kodak listed assets of $5.1 billion and debt of $6.8 billion in the bankruptcy filing. We hope they’re able to recover. It would be a shame to lose a pioneering company like Kodak. ‘Star Trek 2’ Officially Lands J.J. Abrams As Director

Helmer of the 2009 franchise could begin shooting this winter, according to reports. By Gil Kaufman J.J. Abrams Photo: Getty Images Sometimes, if you wait long enough (and blog hard enough), the universe will hear your cries of anguish and soothe them with a big glass of thirst-quenching Romulan Ale. Or, better yet, provide confirmation that J.J. Abrams has finally committed to directing the “Star Trek” sequel. Either way, you’re pretty psyched. After indicating that he was still up in the air about directing the anticipated sequel to his wildly successful reboot of the space franchise, New York Magazine’s Vulture blog is reporting that Abrams is onboard and that pre-production is under way. Citing unnamed insiders familiar with the “Super 8” director’s plans, Vulture reported that the script is expected to be done by month’s end and that shooting could begin this winter. Entertainment Weekly confirmed the news on Wednesday (September 14). Abrams recently finished shooting the fourth “Mission: Impossible” movie, “Ghost Protocol” — which again stars Tom Cruise, along with Ving Rhames, Jeremy Renner, Josh Holloway and Paula Patton — has hedged in the past about whether he would take up another tour on the Enterprise before a killer script was in place. In August, he told Collider , “Once you say, ‘We’re ready to go, but we don’t have a finished script yet,’ or, ‘I’m directing the thing and here’s the release date, but we don’t have a finished script,’ what starts to happen is that you’re suddenly in production on a movie where you’re thinking, ‘Oh my God, we weren’t really ready!’ ” In July, producer/screenwriter Damon Lindelof told MTV News that work has continued on the script, even as the director’s chair question remained up in the air. “There was a lot of work going on over the course of the last year between Bob [Orci] and Alex [Kurtzman] and I,” he said. “We generated, like, a 90-page half-script half-treatment based on some meetings that we’ve had with J.J [Abrams]. Now that J.J. is finally finished with ‘Super 8’ we’ve kind of, not thrown out that material, but we’re reworking a lot of it.” Describing how the four writers wrote the original movie, Lindelof said, “Those four people sort of sitting in a room bouncing ideas off each other, challenging those ideas, sort of shaking the tree.” At the time, he said the idea was to get back to that form of creative thinking. “Because ‘Trek 2’ has to be better than ‘Trek 1,’ ” he said, likening the sequel to the increase in quality from the already great “Batman Begins” to the exceptional “The Dark Knight.” “It has to.” He said at the time that they were working hard to make a great leap forward in storytelling. “We are deep into that process now and writing.” A spokesperson for Paramount Pictures could not be reached for comment at press time. One-Time Pops ‘Scarface’ Fanatic Yayo Kingpin Thuggin’ It Up Like Tony Montana

SMH… Every dog may have his day, but Papo Perez had to learn the hard way that the world wasn’t his — chico! Cocaine kingpin Ceferino “Papo” Perez was so smitten with the movie “Scarface” that police say he kept a framed picture from the movie with his face posted over Al Pacino’s next to his bed in one of his homes in Yonkers. Unlike Tony Montana, Perez lived to experience his unhappy ending. One-time popped Perez earlier this week and charged him with running an $80,000 a week yayo delivery service. “He was very proud of what he was going. He was quite arrogant and narcissistic,” said NYPD Inspector Lori Pollock. Papo’s crew, which included his wife Elsie Detres-Perez and 20 others, were arrested following a year-long investigation. Nine cars, $550,000 in cash and “pounds and pounds” of gold jewelry were also seized, along with three guns, including a MAC-11 semi-automatic machine pistol, and six pounds of marijuana. Investigators say despite his large fortune, Perez put his wife to work for him packaging product. “My wife needs the money, so she is willing to do it,” Perez, 44, was caught on tape telling another alleged packager in March, according to an indictment in the case. “You bag up, and she seals,” he said of the 1,500-Ziploc-a-day process. Both have pleaded not guilty to drug conspiracy and other charges. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said he believes the arrests have shut Perez’s crew down for good. “This enterprise is over,” he said. Boy, we tell ya… Folks gettin’ caught up trying to do it like they see in the movies. This guy is gonna get eaten up in court, it sounds like he got real sloppy. Source

It’s Earth Day!: What Are Hollywood’s Green Celebs Up To?

Leo DiCaprio, Joe Jonas, Alicia Silverstone and more are doing their part for Mother Earth. By Jocelyn Vena Leonardo DiCaprio Photo: Kiyoshi Ota/ Getty Images Some of Hollywood’s biggest names have been open about their love for the planet. So in honor of Earth Day, MTV News zeroed in on some of La La Land’s greenest superstars to show the ways in which they’re using their celebrity to shed light on important environmental causes. Leonardo DiCaprio has set the bar very high for other green celebs. And he is, in many ways, the face of environmentally-minded Hollywood. Not only does he have his own foundation focused on finding sustainable options, but he also wrote, produced, and narrated “The 11th Hour,” a film about the dangers of global warming. Much like DiCaprio, Ed Norton is a well-known activist who has worked with charities that help bring attention to Mother Earth. Norton has also teamed up with the Enterprise Green Communities Initiative and BP’s Solar Neighbors program. He recently worked with Joe Jonas for the singer’s Change for the Children Foundation. Joe has been vocal about the ways his fans can help the planet. Last year, he recorded the song “Make a Wave” for the “Oceans” soundtrack, and he spoke MTV News about getting involved. “There [are] a lot of things that people can do to help out that they don’t really know about. The movie really … helps you understand what you can do. Whether it’s really taking your time and going to the beaches and helping out or whether it’s something at home, there’s so many different things that if we all do it together, just like anything else, we can make a big impact.” Alicia Silverstone, a vegan , continues to spread the word about eating sustainable foods. She released a cookbook, “The Kind Diet,” and shared with MTV News why she feels it’s important others eat in a way that’s both “kind” to the environment and their own bodies. “I started to glow, and people were like, ‘Why do you look so great?’ I felt so much better, and I used to take an asthma inhaler and I used to get allergy shots — and all that stuff went away. And my skin got great,” she explained. “So what I found was at first, I thought this was good karma.” Other well-known celebrity activists include Hayden Panettiere, Chace Crawford , Rosario Dawson and American Ferrera. How are you helping the planet on Earth Day? Tell us in the comments!

Glenn Close Responds To ‘Offensive’ Navy Video

Oscar winner is furious over unwittingly appearing in a racy video produced by now-suspended U.S. Navy captain. By Eric Ditzian Glenn Close in the video by Captain Owen Honors Photo: The Virginian Pilot Five-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close has struck back against her unauthorized appearance in a series of sexually-charged videos shown aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. The videos feature skits filled with homophobic slurs, simulated sexual acts and a clip of two women appearing to shower together. Close appears in a brief shot that comes directly after a scene showing two men in bed together with condoms and lubrication on a bedside table. “The cynical, unauthorized use of my image in this video is deeply offensive and insulting, and was the result of a seemingly innocent request made during a visit to an aircraft carrier over four years ago,” Close said in a statement . The videos were distributed in 2006 and 2007 aboard the ship’s closed-circuit television system but recently became public. Navy Capt. Owen Honors, who produced the videos and figures prominently in them, was subsequently relieved of his duty as commander of the Enterprise after an investigation. A Navy spokesman has called the videos “inappropriate” and made clear that “the Navy does not endorse or condone these kinds of actions.” In Close’s video clip, the actress appears during a montage set to Chicago’s “You’re the Inspiration.” Following the appearance of the two men in bed, the actress is seen sitting at a desk and spinning around to reveal herself wearing a USS Enterprise cap and holding a multicolored stuffed parrot. She appears to be speaking, but her voice is obscured by the music. “I am distraught that my image has been used to perpetuate something that I abhor,” Close said in the statement.

Republican Rep. Bob Inglis Blasts GOP For Denying Global Warming

In June, Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC) became one of the first incumbent Republicans to be knocked off by a far-right insurgent Tea Party candidate. Since then, Inglis — who has maintained a very high 93 percent lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union — has blasted the GOP for using “racism” to whip voters into a frenzy, for “following those personalities [such as Fox News host Glenn Beck] and not leading,” and for deceiving voters with conspiracy theories about death panels and “preying on their fears.” Yesterday morning, at a House subcommittee hearing on climate change, Inglis mocked his Republican colleagues for refusing to acknowledge the truth and danger of global warming, saying, “They slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night, and they’re experts on climate change.” He also warned that while they posture to score political points, China will surpass the U.S. in clean technology: INGLIS: Because 98 of the doctors say, “Do this thing,” two say, “Do the other.” So, it’s on the record. And we’re here with important decision to be made. And I would also suggest to my Free Enterprise colleagues — especially conservatives here — whether you think it’s all a bunch of hooey, what we’ve talked about in this committee, the Chinese don’t. And they plan on eating our lunch in this next century. They plan on innovating around these problems, and selling to us, and the rest of the world, the technology that’ll lead the 21st century. So we may just press the pause button here for several years, but China is pressing the fast-forward button. And as a result, if we wake up in several years and we say, “geez, this didn’t work very well for us. The two doctors didn’t turn out to be so right. 98 might have been the ones to listen to.” There are people who make a lot of money on talk radio and talk TV saying a lot of things. They slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night, and they’re experts on climate change. They substitute their judgment for people who have Ph.D.s and work tirelessly [on climate change]. Indeed, a ThinkProgress analysis found that 50 percent of the incoming freshman GOP class deny the existence of manmade climate change, while a shocking 86 percent are opposed to any legislation to address climate change that increases government revenue. Meanwhile, all of the Republicans vying to chair the House Energy Committee — which handles climate and energy issues — in the new Congress are climate change deniers. They include Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX), who infamously apologized to BP shortly after the company’s catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico this summer. cont… added by: JanforGore

Peter Steele’s Type O Negative Bandmates, Family React To Death

Bandmates say Steele ‘had been enjoying a long period of sobriety and improved health’ before his death. By Gil Kaufman Type O Negative in 1999 Photo: Jim Steinfeldt/ Getty Images After years of struggling with substance abuse and health issues, Type O Negative singer/bassist Peter Steele was in a good place before his sudden death, his bandmates said. The towering frontman died at age 48 on Wednesday from apparent heart failure. “It is with great sadness that we inform you that Type O Negative frontman, bassist and our bandmate, Peter Steele passed away last night of what appears to be heart failure,” keyboardist Josh Silver, guitarist Kenny Hickey and drummer Johnny Kelly, the grief-stricken rockers said in a statement on their Web site . “Ironically Peter had been enjoying a long period of sobriety and improved health and was imminently due to begin writing and recording new music for our follow up to Dead Again released in 2007.” The group said an official cause of death has not been determined, pending autopsy results, and that funeral services will be private, with a possible public memorial at some point. “We are truly saddened to lose our friend and appreciate the tremendous outpouring today from around the world,” the trio wrote. Each man then wrote his own personal remembrance of the quixotic metal frontman. Silver, in particular, seemed torn by the loss of his close friend and frequent musical foil. “Peter, My endless source of frustration, (as I’m yours) you have really done it this time,” Silver wrote. “You have changed and touched countless lives through music, comedy and often brutal honesty. You’ve made life both interesting and irritating and I could not imagine not having known you for 37 years. It still isn’t true in my mind but in time I will miss you and the creating that we all endured together. We certainly disagreed constantly and I believe (and hope) we all learned from each other. Should I call you my brother, friend or neighbor? I can only call you Peter (and usually after 2 p.m.). We laughed at ourselves more times then I can count. Knowing humans are preposterous creatures and I know we reveled in that fact. I will miss you in time, but at this moment your premature departure seems surreal and has pissed me off to no end. Though I never told you that I harbor a deep respect for you, I do. Goodbye my friend.” Hickey called Steele one of the most brilliant and funny personalities in music, saying his humor and talent were 100 percent real. “Half the time people thought he was joking, but he was actually telling the truth,” he wrote. “Part of me died with him.” Kelly found it hard to put his grief into words, admitting, “I’m not sure if I should eulogize or roast you. Both good and bad, we went on one hell of a ride together and sadly, the ride has come to an end. You truly were a unique person. Your music touched many people. Myself included. Whether it was talking about the Beatles, power tools, how Pluto was no longer considered a planet or calling me at 3 a.m. asking me to drive to your house to have a fistfight with you, you always kept it interesting. It was a privilege to have been your bandmate. It’s something that I will always cherish.” Steele’s family also released a statement, confirming that the singer died after a short illness, though no details were given on what the health issue was. “The music world has lost a great talent, and music fans worldwide are mourning, but for our family we are mourning a beloved brother, uncle, cousin, friend and funny man,” the statement said. “Peter Steele was a complex man, known for his brooding looks, his self-deprecating sense of humor, unique view of the world, and most of all his loyalty to his fans, friends and family. Survived by five sisters, the eldest living sister notes that he was more than our brother, he was our son. His untimely death is tragic — a great loss to us and to music.” Related Videos Remembering Type O Negative’s Peter Steele Related Photos Peter Steele: A Life In Photos Related Artists Type O Negative
