EPA Changes Rules For Cement Industry, Cleaning Up Mercury Pollutants

photo via flickr The Obama administration has been on the receiving end of a lot of heat lately, and deservedly so after it chose to let the climate bill whither on the vine. But lost in the shuffle are many of the other positive steps the administration is taking to preserve our environment. Case in point: Today EPA finalized regulations the will require cement kilns to reduce emissions of mercury and other pollutants by more than 90 percent, a step that will save money and improve public health…. My Own Personal Beauty Matrix

Why Do You Do This? The question that I've been asked the most lately is “why do you do this?”. {This meaning spending so much time writing, researching, interviewing people and talking about non-toxic choices in organic beauty products.} That's a fair question and one that got me thinking about the deeper answer. The obvious answers are health, the environment, our future. But the truth is, the answer is a bit more complicated. There is no fat paycheck arriving in my mailbox each week that keeps my fingers tapping these keys. In fact, I don't know if I'll ever make any significant income from this (but if I do, that would be icing on the organic cake and help me get the message out loud and proud!). According to Active ingredients used in cosmetics: safety survey (2008) “Ingredients are used in cosmetics to give them specific properties. Certain ingredients, so called active ingredients, may produce pharmacological or toxic effects under certain conditions. Cosmetic products containing such ingredients may pose a health risk both because of their potential toxicity and because they may mask underlying serious diseases and consequently cause a dangerous delay in diagnosis and treatment.” My Own Personal Matrix By now, I think we've all at least heard of the movie Matrix with Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburn. I've only ever seen the first movie where the Matrix is introduced. You know that famous scene where Fishburn's character is offering Keanu the choice of taking a little pill that would change everything forever, or taking another pill that would return him to pleasant life as he knew it. Fishburn's character makes sure Keanu understands that once he takes the “truth revealing” pill, there is no going back to daily life and that he will “never see anything the same way again.” When Neo, Reeve's characeter asks, “What is the Matrix?”, Fishburne answers…”The matrix is the world that has been pulled over your eyes that protects you from the truth!” This is the line..this is the one line runs through my mind each time I see an add for Loreal, Revlon and any other mainstream cosmetics line. Each time one of these ads promises to plump, make something glow, or beautify women all over the world, I feel as if they are hoping that their target audience has not taken the other pill…the one where they don't to see the actual truth….they don't READ THE LABEL and learn about it. makeup1.jpg What Is The Truth? The truth is something that can be very personal and relative to each individual. I think we all, as humans love to believe that the government, FDA and the companies actually creating beauty products share a common truth have the greater good for humanity and health in mind. “They wouldn't create something that would hurt us!”, and “Isn't it FDA approved?” are the most common lines of thinking when it comes to extent of the reflecting on possible toxins in our beauty regimen. Since I chose to take the ‘Matrix exposing pill' I haven't been able to see the world in quite the same way. After spending over a decade working in and managing beauty salons I knew intuitively and physically that the smells were not good for us. I just didn't know how bad they were. How Bad Are They…Really? We all like to think that the FDA is there to protect us and put strict guidelines in place to force companies to only use ingredients that have been thoroughly tested. The truth is, those guidelines are not as strong as they should be. One glaring example of the lack of control is a simple comparison of known toxic ingredients including lead and talc (a relative of asbestos) banned from use in the United States versus Europe. According to the Environmental Working Group “…unlike for drugs and food additives, FDA has no authority to require that cosmetics be tested for safety before they are sold. An industry-funded panel (the CIR), not a government health agency, reviews the safety of cosmetic ingredients in the U.S. Our research shows that this largely self-regulated industry routinely fails to adhere to their own safety panel's advice or to heed the health warnings inherent in cosmetic safety standards set in other countries. More than 750 personal care products sold in the U.S. violate industry safety standards or cosmetic safety standards in other industrialized countries.” But I Thought We Were Worth It? Did you know that Europe has tested and banned over 1200 ingredients for use in cosmetics. Let's compare that to the FDA who has banned around 10!!! The truth is that FDA will only get involved in a situation if the product has been known to cause obvious harm to a person. The problem with this outlook is that most toxins have a slow trickle affect on a person. You may notice a rash or dry skin or hair and not even relate it to the product you are using. What Can I DO? You do have options. The organic cosmetics market has more than tripled over the last 5 years. The products are actually good, very good. You don't have to go naked and barefoot to go green anymore. You can be your gorgeous self and still use beauty products that are not causing harm. Here is a resource that can help in wading through the beauty aisle – www.cosmeticsdatabase.com . Here you can look up the safety rating of products as well as individual ingredients. This isn't just about looking good, it's about living a long healthy life not filled with illness and disease. Gulf fishermen say they’re not convinced seafood is safe

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) – They've waited months to get back to their livelihoods, yet some Gulf Coast fishermen are worried the waters reopened too soon, putting public safety at risk. Fishermen from Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida met for hours in Biloxi Wednesday. They say they are concerned that since the oil well has been capped, the federal and state government leaders think the crisis is over. The fishermen say they have seen some strange behavior in the sea life, and they blame the chemical dispersants used to break up the oil. They want more testing done on seafood. Mark Stewart is a Mississippi fisherman. “All the sea life is trying to get out of the water,” Stewart said. “The turtles are all out there with their heads sticking out of the water trying to get air. It's not normal.” “Sea creatures that are normally bottom species are on top of the water due to the water column is so full of dispersants,” said Danny Ross, another Mississippi fisherman. “The oxygen level is so low. A Horseshoe Crab, it's on top of the water trying to swim. We've never seen that in our life. We might not be biologists, but we know our waters. This is not normal.” Gulf Coast fishermen say they chose Biloxi as their meeting place because the Gulf of Mexico Alliance Conference is underway here. Several of the fishermen told us they planned to attend the event to make their voices heard and express doubts as to whether the seafood is safe to eat. Kathryn Birren traveled from Florida for the meeting. “Fishermen do not want to lose our credibility or deliver contaminated seafood to market,” Birren said. “We have lost enough already. As fishermen, we know that the use of dispersants has made this crisis vastly worse for everyone. It has hidden the oil from view and has created a false sense of health and safety.” “We want the use of dispersants to be ceased immediately. We want seafood fresh to be tested for dispersants, which is not happening at this time. We want the dispersants tested for their harmfulness to seafood,” said Birren. “They're telling people it's okay to eat seafood from our Sound out here, it's not,” said Mississippi fisherman James Miller. “We're very concerned fishermen. The dispersants are taking all the oxygen out of the water. They don't want to come to that conclusion. They just want to sweep it under the rug.” Some commercial fishermen tell WLOX they believe low oxygen levels is the reason why they've haven't been able to catch very much seafood since the waters reopened. Fishermen created a lists of requests from the meeting: 1. The EPA and Coast Guard to discontinue current chemical dispersant use and test all seafood and fisheries with updated testing protocols. 2. BP and upcoming Feinberg Commission to establish more transparency for BP claims process and hiring practices regarding VOO program. 2. BP and federal agencies train and hire local commercial fishermen for all hazardous testing initiatives and clean -up work in a culturally competent manner. 4. Federal, state, and local agencies to develop community based health centers to service at-risk seafood industry population who are exposed to dispersants and oil clean-up. 5. Establish and fund regional collaborative scientific community to monitor and research oil spill impact on the environment. The collaborative scientific community will be advised by a committee of Gulf of Mexico resident leaders (non-related to the oil and energy industry) to ensure open and transparent centralized data management center that provides free public access. 6. Establish a regional task force with representation of community leaders from all Gulf Coast states including Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida to collaboratively work with federal agencies to develop a comprehensive workforce development plan. The Gulf Coast Fund organized the meeting. BP faced with $10 billion lawsuit over Texas City toxic release

Just as BP began celebrating a proclaimed success in its Gulf of Mexico catastrophe, the company now finds itself in the woeful position of facing a $10 billion lawsuit over a 40-day toxic chemical release in Texas City, Texas earlier this year. A $10 billion class action lawsuit was filed Tuesday on behalf of 2,000 claimants against oil behemoth BP after the company engaged in a 40-day upset during April and May that released at least 538,000 pounds of known toxins into the Texas City skies. The event began just two weeks before the company became very well-known over its Deepwater Horizon incident in the Gulf of Mexico. Tony Buzbee, a Texas attorney who also represents Gulf coast residents impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster, filed the suit on Tuesday for his clients seeking compensation for “health effects including all symptoms associated with acute benzene exposure,” according to The Telegraph( http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/energy/oilandgas/7925565/BP-hit-… ). As reported earlier by Digital Journal( http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/294675 ), the toxic leak, or upset, occurred at BP’s Texas City refinery from April 6 to May 16, releasing hundreds of thousands of pounds of toxins into the air, including benzene, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides. In a ProPublica( http://www.propublica.org/article/bp-texas-refinery-had-huge-toxic-release-just-… ) report of the incident, company officials were aware of the situation, underestimated its severity, and kept the plant in production to allay the chance of investors’ worries. It notes “the company’s corporate culture favors production and profit margins over safety and the environment. The 40-day release echoes in several notable ways the runaway spill in the Gulf. BP officials initially underestimated the problem and took steps in the days leading up to the incident to reduce costs and keep the refinery online.” Buzbee, already involved in legal action against BP as he represents 15 Deepwater Horizon rig workers, dozens of fisherman, dock workers, and restaurants – all impacted by the Gulf of Mexico debacle – is a prominent Houston lawyer with a solid record in winning settlements from oil companies, Mother Jones reports( http://motherjones.com/blue-marble/2010/06/rigs-fire-i-told-you-was-gonna-happen ). The lawsuit over the Texas City incident alleges “tens of thousands of individuals were injured and had his or her long-term health put in jeopardy after being exposed to extremely high levels of Benzene and other toxic chemicals while working at the BP Texas City Refinery or by simply living or working in Texas City,” according to Yahoo News( http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20100803/bs_yblog_upshot/bp-faces-10-billio… ). The lawyer is seeking “punitive damages against BP in excess of $10 billion.” added by: toyotabedzrock
