ESPN Under Fire Over Handling of Erin Andrews Video, Ben Roethlisberger Charges

It is deservedly called the worldwide leader in sports, but perhaps the #1 criticism of ESPN over the years has been its unabashed and frequent self-promotion.

Now, a pair of stories over the past week and ESPN’s involvement in each have made the network the story – deservedly or not – and left it under fire.

First, a hotel peephole video surfaced of ESPN reporter Erin Andrews, who was filmed in the nude without her consent. Andrews’ representatives and ESPN acknowledged the grainy video was her and that they would seek civil and criminal action.

Erin Andrews was the victim of an abhorrent act, one no fault of ESPN’s.

However, the network’s reaction – particularly its banning of the New York Post after the paper printed Erin Andrews nude pics – was questionable, some feel.

The Post‘s gossip page ran an item Thursday blaming ESPN for its letter to the website hosting the hotel peephole video that ultimately outed Erin Andrews.

One columnist even wrote, “The fact is one person committed the crime, but all of us, including ESPN, contributed to this revealing peep at our culture.”

Erin PicRoethlisberger Picture

First, there was the Erin Andrews tape. Then the Ben Roethlisberger case.

When a Nevada woman named Andrea McNulty filed a civil suit accusing the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback of sexually assaulting her in the hotel where she worked last summer, ESPN did not report it on TV or on its website.

Its reasoning: “A policy of not running stories based on civil suits without a criminal investigation or without conducting its own reporting.”

ESPN claimed to be taking the high road by not reporting the lawsuit, but as it pertained to Ben Roethlisberger, many wondered if ESPN was refusing to only to stay in good standing with one of the country’s most high-profile athletes.

Finally, three days after the story broke, ESPN reported it, saying it was just waiting for either Roethlisberger or law enforcement to make a statement.

Any news organization has the right to set standards by which it will report a story, of course. But the New York Times reported it, and given that it involved a sports figure, it’s a little odd that the “Worldwide Leader in Sports” did not.

If nothing else, ESPN’s impartiality and role in creating more news than it reports is a subject being hotly debated in journalism circles.

Someone broke the law when they sneakily—and creepily—filmed ESPN’s Erin Andrews naked in her hotel room and now amateur sleuths are out to catch the culprit and bring him to justice.

This will likely lead to 1% actual useful information and 99% wild unfounded guesses. After all, how do you find someone on the internet who doesn’t want to be found? Actually, finding them on the net is easy, but turning that online persona into an actual real world person that police can club with a baton is much more difficult. Don Chavez, purveyor of some of your favorite dirty cheerleader photos, is hot on the trail of the anonymous user who uploaded the videos to French tube farm Dailymotion—about four months ago. (They’re gone now, as is the user who uploaded them, so don’t bother.) Yes, they were there, virtually undetected, for weeks.

So Chavez combined some digging, direct messaging, and dart throwing to narrow the culprits down to someone who lives within driving distance of an SEC football stadium. That should help the dragnet. Of course, this assumes that the Dailymotion uploader was also the person who filmed the video, which is itself a giant leap of faith. That person could have found the videos almost anywhere. Underground message board and file sharing sites can traffic in this stuff years while remaining completely under the radar, and just because the guy is a fan of shady invasion of privacy videos, that doesn’t automatically mean he’s the one who films them. Or that we’ll ever know who “he” is.

Of course, because it’s the internet, there is always a contingent of folks assuming that it’s all a stunt anyway. Because there’s something “fishy” about the whole situation, that means Erin Andrews would pretend to be violated for … what? More fame? A potentially ruined journalism career? Yes, the idea that someone could film such a video, undetected, through a peephole from a hotel hallway seems unlikely, but who ever said that’s exactly how it happened? No one has claimed responsibility for it, so everything else is just guess work.

The only truth is that nobody knows anything and we are unlikely to ever know anything about the true original source of the videos. ESPN will continue to play whack-a-mole with bloggers who “discover” the video and try to post it, but it’s hard to imagine it ever getting much beyond that. I would love to be wrong about that, but I’m not holding my breath.

Erin Andrews Clueless Over Nude Video

Erin Andrews Nude VideoESPN reporter Erin Andrews is on the hunt to sue a Peeping Tom who videotaped the 31-year-old walking around her hotel room naked — the problem is Erin has no idea where or when the video was shot.

Erin has already lawyered up with one of the most powerful attorneys in L.A., Marshall B. Grossman, and now her team is trying to figure out some details behind the footage so they can put together a plan of attack.

Meanwhile, Grossman has already released the following statement: “While alone in the privacy of her hotel room, Erin Andrews was surreptitiously videotaped without her knowledge or consent.

She was the victim of a crime and is taking action to protect herself and help ensure that others are not similarly violated in the future. Although the perpetrator or perpetrators of this criminal act have not yet been identified, when they are identified she intends to bring both civil and criminal charges against them and against anyone who has published the material.

We request respect of Erin’s privacy at this time, while she and her representatives are working with the authorities.”

It was not clear from the reports what hotel the video was filmed in or when it was made. The video has since been pulled from the Internet.

ESPN is also also furious about the situation, and released a statement of their own: “Erin has been grievously wronged. “Our people and resources are in full support of her as she deals with this abhorrent act.”

Erin Andrews Nude Video Peddled for Profit

Erin AndrewsSomeone is trying to sell the secret videotape of ESPN‘s Erin Andrews and it’s clear — there’s a pervert on the loose.

We will not publish the video nor did we purchase it. It’s a clear invasion of privacy. But this is what we can tell you.

It appears the video was shot from some sort of spy cam. It looks as if someone drilled a small hole in her hotel room from an adjoining room.

The camera is clearly being operated by someone. It follows Erin as she moves about her room.

It looks like a high-end hotel, but Erin’s people claim they have no idea where or when it was shot.

It’s also clear Erin has absolutely no idea she’s being videotaped.
