AFP – China has raised the death toll from unrest between Han Chinese and Muslim Uighurs to 184, as riot police and armed soldiers maintained a firm grip on the flashpoint city of Urumqi.

AP – An argument earlier in the day between teens from rival neighborhoods had Jason Broom worried as he stood in a pothole-riddled parking lot pondering his next move. Broom was released from prison last year after serving time in two killings and is now a conflict mediator on Kansas City’s gang-infested east side.

Hispanic rights group at center of Sotomayor fight (AP)

AP – Cesar Perales has fought his share of critics over the years, in legal battles for minorities denied jobs, bilingual classes in schools and more Latino police officers. But none of those efforts compares with the tempest his Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund has stirred because of the dozen years that Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor served as one of its board members.

Sharp launches line of LED-backlit HDTVs

Sharp has announced the launch of a line of LED-backlit LCD HDTVs this week. The AQUOS branded TVs will range in size from 32″ to 52″ and will be very similar to the popular 1080p LCD TVs already offered by the company but instead using Sharp’s UltraBrilliant LED-backlight technology.
