Paramore Have ‘Squeezed Out The Last Drop’ From Brand New Eyes

‘Playing God’ single and video will be the album’s last hurrah, Hayley Williams tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Paramore’s Hayley Williams Photo: MTV News As if the scrapbook sentiments of their just-released “Playing God” video weren’t evidence enough, Hayley Williams will be the first to tell you that Paramore are officially finished with Brand New Eyes, the album that took them to the brink and back. “Oh, we squeezed out the last drop last month,” she laughed. “We put out ‘Playing God’ and did a video for it with our friend [director] Brandon [Chesbro], and I feel great. I feel like … we hit the finish line and we’re golden. I love it. I’m proud.” So there will be no more singles from BNE, which was released more than 14 months ago and went gold. In fact, Williams said she knew as much when she began drawing up the “Playing God” treatment with Chesbro — which is why the duo decided to film it at her house in Franklin, Tennessee, and include as many of their friends as possible. It only seemed appropriate, given the sheer amount of personal growth (and intra-band communication) that went into the album’s creation, most of which is tackled in the song itself. “We filmed it at my house, so it was really personal, and I think that’s how we like to keep things,” she said. “We had friends hanging out on set all day, and Brandon being one of our best friends, he directed it. … It was just a fun, personal play on the lyrics of the song.” And, of course, there are also plenty of nods to Paramore’s past — the swinging light bulb from their “Ignorance” clip, the mirrors that adorn the back cover of Eyes, the old band photos Williams can be seen looking through — and the pop-culture world the band inhabits. It wouldn’t be a parting gift without a few presents to unwrap, after all. “There’s a lot of little things for our fans to figure out,” Williams said. “Nods to Gaga, with the glasses and the poison, and ‘Dexter,’ with the plastic on my wall in the basement. Making it was fun. I love it.” If you could pick another single from Brand New Eyes, what would it be? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Paramore

Lady Gaga’s Madame Tussauds Wax Statues Unveiled

Little monsters turn up in NYC for unveiling of Gaga in a hair hat. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Evan Leong The Lady Gaga wax figure at Madame Tussauds in New York City Photo: Gary Gershoff/ Getty Images All day on Thursday (December 9), Madame Tussauds unveiled eight wax versions of Lady Gaga all over the world, including at the museum’s European outposts, as well as one in New York’s Times Square. MTV News was on hand for the NYC unveiling of the pop star’s wax likeness, where her little monsters showed up dressed up in Gaga-like garb to catch a glimpse of the statue. For the New York version, Gaga appears in a sheer black dress paired with a wide-brim hat made of hair, a look she wore to the Consumer Electronics Show back in January. Earlier in the day, figures were unveiled in Asia and Europe, and they fittingly each have their own unique fashion statement, which Gaga fans were invited to help pick out. In Berlin, Gaga wears a blazer, leotard and hair bow; in London the figure dons a Philip Treacy telephone hat and sparkly navy Armani suit; in Amsterdam, she’s in a nude bodysuit, a white blazer and a towering purple beehive. Her skintight black harlequin outfit is featured in Hong Kong, and her wire “wing” dress is on display in Shanghai. Gaga statues are also making their debut in Los Angeles and Las Vegas later in the day. “As one of the biggest and most unique talents in the world, Lady Gaga is the perfect subject for the biggest figure launch in Madame Tussauds’ history,” a November press release said, explaining why Gaga was getting so many statues. “All of the styles being worked on are classic Gaga, and we’re sure her fans will be delighted with the unique looks when we unveil the figures next month.” Gaga is one of the many pop stars to get a wax statue this year. She joins Taylor Swift , Kim Kardashian and Gwen Stefani as some of the latest celebs to be immortalized for the museum. Which is your favorite Lady Gaga wax figure outfit? The Vanishing Of The Bees

Honeybees have been mysteriously disappearing across the planet, literally vanishing from their hives. Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon has brought beekeepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli, watermelon, onions, cherries and a hundred other fruits and vegetables. Commercial honeybee operations pollinate crops that make up one out of every three bites of food on our tables. Vanishing of the Bees follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S. The film explores the struggles they face as the two friends plead their case on Capital Hill and travel across the Pacific Ocean in the quest to protect their honeybees. Filming across the US, in Europe, Australia and Asia, this documentary examines the alarming disappearance of honeybees and the greater meaning it holds about the relationship between mankind and mother earth. As scientists puzzle over the cause, organic beekeepers indicate alternative reasons for this tragic loss. Conflicting options abound and after years of research, a definitive answer has not been found to this harrowing mystery. added by: JanforGore

Mounting State Debts Stoke Fears of a Looming Crisis

The State of Illinois is still paying off billions in bills that it got from schools and social service providers last year. Arizona recently stopped paying for certain organ transplants for people in its Medicaid program. States are releasing prisoners early, more to cut expenses than to reward good behavior. And in Newark, the city laid off 13 percent of its police officers last week. Yuki Scott, right, watched her daughter and other children one Friday last May in Hawaii, because the school year was shortened by 17 days. While next year could be even worse, there are bigger, longer-term risks, financial analysts say. Their fear is that even when the economy recovers, the shortfalls will not disappear, because many state and local governments have so much debt — several trillion dollars’ worth, with much of it off the books and largely hidden from view — that it could overwhelm them in the next few years. “It seems to me that crying wolf is probably a good thing to do at this point,” said Felix Rohatyn, the financier who helped save New York City from bankruptcy in the 1970s. Some of the same people who warned of the looming subprime crisis two years ago are ringing alarm bells again. Their message: Not just small towns or dying Rust Belt cities, but also large states like Illinois and California are increasingly at risk. Municipal bankruptcies or defaults have been extremely rare — no state has defaulted since the Great Depression, and only a handful of cities have declared bankruptcy or are considering doing so. But the finances of some state and local governments are so distressed that some analysts say they are reminded of the run-up to the subprime mortgage meltdown or of the debt crisis hitting nations in Europe. Analysts fear that at some point — no one knows when — investors could balk at lending to the weakest states, setting off a crisis that could spread to the stronger ones, much as the turmoil in Europe has spread from country to country. Mr. Rohatyn warned that while municipal bankruptcies were rare, they appeared increasingly possible. And the imbalances are so large in some places that the federal government will probably have to step in at some point, he said, even if that seems unlikely in the current political climate. “I don’t like to play the scared rabbit, but I just don’t see where the end of this is,” he added. M.I.A. To Drop Vicky Leekx Mixtape On New Year’s Eve

‘Layin’ bad minds to rest 2010!’ songstress tweets of upcoming project. By Mawuse Ziegbe M.I.A. Photo: Jim Dyson/ Getty Images With 2010 coming to a close, M.I.A. has already announced her plans for the new year: Flood the Web with some new music. On Friday (December 3), the electro-dance superstar tweeted that she’s going to drop a mixtape on December 31. “Vicky leekx mixtape coming new years eve!” she wrote . The indie-music luminary didn’t elaborate on the sound of the project but added that she plans to churn out a suite of tracks that will make an impact. “Layin bad minds to rest 2010!” The “Born Free” artist has been trekking across Europe on tour and is slated to be on the road until December 12, according to her MySpace page. But it appears she was able to squeeze in some studio time while ripping stages overseas. And although her politically charged lyricism and genre-smashing beats have captivated her fans, the story behind the production of her music often rivals the British star’s singular vibe. M.I.A.’s 2007 pastiche of reggae-inflected, worldly electro, Kala, reflected the global sensibility of recording pretty much everywhere on Earth other than her homebase at the time, Brooklyn, while stuck in immigration limbo. For 2010’s ///Y/ she pretty much stayed put, but still banged out the album in dramatic fashion: hunkering down in a custom-built studio beneath her home. “I built a room under the house that was kind of like a cave; you had to go down into it,” she told MTV News in July. “And then I just sort of made it as creative as possible for me — I was just sort of making the furniture and making the pictures, covered all the walls with stuff that I made, so it feels like every step of the way, I was working on the layers of this sort of environment.” Are you looking forward to M.I.A.’s mixtape? World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day comes amid progress, concern By the CNN WIre Staff December 1, 2010 2:32 a.m. EST A giant red ribbon hangs on the White House for observance of World AIDS Day. STORY HIGHLIGHTS * The estimated number of children with HIV/AIDS in 11 Asian countries increases 46 percent * The UN says the number of new HIV infections has dropped 20 percent in the past decade * But the number of new HIV infections outpaces the number of people starting treatment (CNN) — As the global community commemorates World AIDS Day on Wednesday, international health organizations report both promising and sobering trends. While the United Nations says new HIV infections have declined by almost 20 percent worldwide over the past decade, the estimated number of children living with HIV or AIDS in 11 Asian countries has increased by 46 percent between 2001 and 2009, the World Health Organization's South-East Asia office said Wednesday. “In 2001, an estimated 89,000 children were living with HIV/AIDS,” said Vismita Gupta-Smith, public information and advocacy officer for WHO's regional office in New Delhi, India. “In 2009, there are an estimated 130,000 children living with HIV infection,” including recent HIV infection, advanced HIV infection and AIDS. The 11 countries in the region are Bangladesh, Bhutan, North Korea, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Timor-Liste. But a report by a United Nations program released last month shows some encouraging news, including drops in AIDS-related deaths and new HIV cases. Data from the 2010 global report by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) shows that an estimated 2.6 million people became newly infected with HIV, compared with the estimated 3.1 million people infected in 1999. Also in 2009, approximately 1.8 million people died from AIDS-related illnesses, compared with the roughly 2.1 million in 2004, according to UNAIDS. Among young people in 15 of the most severely affected countries, the rate of new HIV infections has fallen by more than 25 percent, led by young people adopting safer sexual practices, according to UNAIDS. “We are breaking the trajectory of the AIDS epidemic with bold actions and smart choices,” said Michel Sidibe, executive director of UNAIDS. “Investments in the AIDS response are paying off, but gains are fragile — the challenge now is how we can all work to accelerate progress.” But not all the news from the UNAIDS report, which covered 182 countries, was good. “Even though the number of new HIV infections is decreasing, there are two new HIV infections for every one person starting HIV treatment,” UNAIDS said. Sub-Saharan Africa continues to be the region most affected by the epidemic, with 69 percent of all new HIV infections, according to UNAIDS. In seven countries, mostly in eastern Europe and central Asia, new HIV infection rates have increased by 25 percent. UNAIDS said in the Asia-Pacific region, 90 percent of countries have laws that obstruct the rights of people living with HIV. Despite the lower numbers of new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths, UNAIDS said the demand for resources is surpassing the supply. “Donor governments' disbursements for the AIDS response in 2009 stood at $7.6 billion, lower than the $7.7 billion available in 2008,” UNAIDS said. “Declines in international investments will affect low-income countries the most — nearly 90 percent rely on international funding for their AIDS programs.” added by: EthicalVegan

How Did 30 Seconds To Mars Pull Off Ambitious ‘Hurricane’ Video?

Jared Leto labored day and night to finish eventual 13-minute-plus short film. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars’ Jared Leto in “Hurricane” Photo: EMI In early November, following his band’s performance of “Hurricane” with Kanye West at the 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards and months of adjective-filled hyperbole about the single’s accompanying video, Jared Leto finally unveiled 30 Seconds to Mars’ “Hurricane” clip on Monday (November 29). OK, “short film.” The singer decided to provide the sneak peek during an impromptu (though well-catered) screening for a handful of folks — including MTV News — in his bedroom at the ME Hotel in Madrid. It was very late at night (or very early in the morning, depending on how you choose to look at these sort of things), and Leto was extremely clear about the fact that this was still “a very rough cut” of the video, playing the thing on a MacBook Pro and pausing every few frames to explain where a CG effect would be inserted or how the sound design would be shaped. But despite those facts (or, maybe, because of them), everyone left that bedroom thinking the exact same thing: “How the heck is Jared going to pull this off?” You couldn’t blame them, because just weeks later, the final, 13-minute version debuted on MTV.com, and it did, indeed, contain a number of impressive CGI effects of the type you might see in a Hollywood superhero summer movie, not to mention enough NC-17-rated material to make “Eyes Wide Shut” look like “Love & Other Drugs” by comparison. At the time, not only was “Hurricane” clocking in at around 20 minutes , it was sort of insane, too: a nightmarish rumination on sex and violence and secret fetishes that not only featured plenty of fight scenes (and nudity), but didn’t shy away from politically loaded imagery. Among the ones that made the cut was one in which a rabbi, priest and imam are seen tossing their holy prayer books onto a blazing pyre in a dank alley and another in which Leto battled a leather-masked foe in a courtyard littered with American-flag-draped coffins. (Spoiler alert, someone you know ends up in one of those coffins.) Part snuff film, part BBC World report, it was, in short, filled with the kind of stuff that makes censors cringe, in an era where that’s increasingly difficult to do. Following some cuts, the finished product contains a number of scenes seemingly too-hot-to-handle, which are dispatched with a big black “censored” bar. Though given the copious nudity, S&M play, barely there fetish gear and one quick-cut image of a woman spitting into another’s mouth, you kind of have to wonder what was so deviant that it couldn’t make the cut among all these dark fantasies? Add in the fact that Leto was attempting to weave three separate narratives — the members of 30STM each battling their personal demons and unlocking secret fantasies — in between all that sex and blood and book-burning, and you have the makings of a major undertaking. Considering that, according to his label, the video was due to premiere at the end of the month, Leto was then cutting the thing full-time, in the midst of a world tour, with the help of a team of editors that traveled with him everywhere he went. It seemed that, in just about every conceivable manner, “Hurricane” was a monster, an ode to not only Leto’s ego, but his unyielding ambition and utterly unmatched enthusiasm, which, in theory, made it not unlike everything he’s ever attempted with 30 Seconds to Mars. But everyone who saw it that night in Madrid knew differently. “Hurricane” may very well have been Leto going too far, pushing too hard. It seemed practically destined to remain forever unfinished. But, like the song’s guest rapper West, Leto is a hard man to deter, and he clearly got his way, delivering a 13-minute mind-bender that involves secret keys that unlock dark fears, treachery, seduction, submission, an unexplained cockroach cameo, a silver sexual aid on a platter and enough creepy masks to make Slipknot shudder. Somehow, by Monday, Leto had wrangled all those dark thoughts and visions into one dizzying whole and brought “Hurricane” home for its premiere. It would have been hard to find many people in the room that night who would have put money on “Hurricane” coming ashore in such record time. Well, except Leto. He knew.
