Postcard from Venice: Tinker, Tailor Is a Rich, Muted Delight; Solondz’s Dark Horse Is Charmless

I’m not sure about the other European critics, but so far the U.K. critics here seem to love one picture above all others: Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy , an adaptation of John Le Carré’s 1974 novel, stars Gary Oldman as George Smiley, the deposed British spy who must find the mole who’s compromising MI6 — or “the circus” — in order to put the organization, and his life, back together. In addition to being based on an enormously popular book, Alfredson’s picture is also haunted by a ghost: The 1979 TV mini-series, which featured Alec Guinness in the George Smiley role. Who’d want to try to top that?

Foster The People Talk 3-D ‘Don’t Stop’ Video

Car chases and ‘Precious’ star Gabourey Sidibe could be on tap for upcoming clip. By Gil Kaufman Foster The People’s Mark Foster Photo: MTV News Foster the People shot out of the box a few months ago with their summer smash “Pumped Up Kicks.” The video for the song is lo-fi to be sure: some live footage of the New Wave-y trio performing mixed in with some wacky road-trip clips, camera-mugging and other goofball antics. It was a modest launch but the irresistible song has continued to gain traction since it came out in February and it is now firmly in the #2 slot on the iTunes singles chart. With a little more scratch and recognition to their name, they recently followed with the big-budget-looking, apocalyptic “Mad Max”-inspired video for “Helena Beat.” And now, according to lead singer Mark Foster, they’re going really big for their next trick. “We’ve got a couple videos shot already that are going to be coming out soon,” Foster told us on the black carpet at the 2011 VMAs . “We’re shooting a new one in 3-D, actually in a week or two for ‘Don’t Stop.’ It’s going to involve a car chase and hopefully [‘Precious’] star Gabourey Sidibe, if we can get her to be in it.” In the meantime, after killing it at big summer festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza — not to mention earning two VMA nods for Best New Artist and Best Rock Video — the trio will be hitting the road hard for the rest of 2011. They’ll be playing U.S. dates through the end of the month, and then take things overseas for European gigs through November. (A spokesperson for the band’s label could not be reached for comment at press time on when the “Don’t Stop” video is slated for release.) Are you excited to see FTP’s next video? Rihanna Shopping in her Tube Bikini Top of the Day

I like Rihanna’s European shopping outfit…mainly because it is half naked…and would make the grocery store a hell of a lot more interesting especially on the overweight and elderly…cuz I’m a pervert and I like that kind of belly exposed…but I also like it because she’s a fucking gutter girl from the Islands who I’d expect in a Doo Rag cleaning hotel rooms…not because I’m a racist…but because that was her destiny before being a child prostitute with the right clients thanks to her Island being one of the more prestigious ones…and who really cares….just look at the pics.

Amy Winehouse Wasn’t Breathing When Security Guard Found Her

Doctor reportedly gave her the all clear the night before her death. By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Investigators continue to look into what caused Amy Winehouse’s death at age 27 on Saturday, even as details emerge about the singer’s final hours. On Sunday, her U.K. representative, Chris Goodman, told TMZ that Winehouse was found alone in her bed by a bodyguard who had been hired to keep an eye on her. “She was in her bedroom after saying she wanted to sleep, and when he went to wake her he found she wasn’t breathing,” Goodman said of the troubled star . “He called the emergency services straight away. He was very shocked. At this stage no one knows how she died. She died alone in bed.” Police have called Winehouse’s death “unexplained.” An autopsy is slated to take place on Monday (July 25), with a funeral likely to follow quickly, within the next day or so, as required by Jewish law. Results of the autopsy are not expected before Tuesday. Winehouse’s father, Mitch, a cab driver-turned-lounge-singer, flew back to England on Sunday in the wake of his daughter’s death and visited her Camden apartment on Monday morning. According to BBC News , he thanked her fans, who have gathered in a vigil outside the flat, for their support. “I can’t tell you what this means to us. It really is making this a lot easier for us,” he told the gathered mourners. “Amy was about one thing and that was love. Her whole life was devoted to her family and her friends and to you guys as well.” The singer’s mother, Janis, and brother, Alex, also visited the site to see the collection of flowers, cards and photos that Winehouse’s admirers have left. On Sunday, the family released a statement in which they said, “Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece. She leaves a gaping hole in our lives. We are coming together to remember her and we would appreciate some privacy and space at this terrible time.” The quoted Janis Winehouse on Sunday saying that her daughter had not been well a day before her death. “She seemed out of it,” Janis reportedly told the tabloid. “But her passing so suddenly still hasn’t hit me.” England’s Daily Telegraph reported that Winehouse was visited at home by her doctor on Friday night, 24 hours before her body was discovered at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Police sources told the paper that no drugs were found in the house and that the security detail had last spoken to her around 10 a.m. on Saturday, when she said she was going to take a rest in her room. The doctor had reportedly been visiting Winehouse regularly to help her combat the ill effects of her years of drinking and drugging. In 2008, Mitch Winehouse revealed that Amy was suffering from the early stages of the incurable pulmonary ailment emphysema, including scarring in her lungs. “The doctor was happy with her condition. When he left on Friday night he had no concerns. Less than 24 hours later she was found dead,” an unnamed source told The Sun tabloid. “Amy’s health has been very fragile and she has been having a series of checkups.” Winehouse’s final public appearance was last Wednesday, when she joined her goddaughter, Dionne Bromfield, during a show at the Roundhouse in Camden. Though she didn’t sing, Winehouse danced alongside Bromfield and encouraged the audience to buy the teenager’s just-released second album, Good for the Soul, which, like her 2009 debut, was released through Winehouse’s label, Lioness Records. Before that, Winehouse had pulled out of a series of European comeback concerts in June after a disastrous gig in Serbia in which she was booed after appearing unsteady and disheveled onstage. She had reportedly completed a stay in alcohol rehab after that tour cancellation and had been under orders not to drink. On Sunday, dozens of stars, from Lady Gaga and Katy Perry to Rihanna, Russell Brand and Mary J. Blige, paid . Related Photos Amy Winehouse: A Life In Photos Related Artists Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse Dead; Found in London Home

Amy Winehouse was found dead in her apartment in London today. Multiple sources confirm that the singer is the woman in this press release from the Metropolitan Police, which doesn’t specifically name her: “Police were called by Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 just before 16 hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman deceased.” “On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death.” “At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained.” Amy Winehouse famously battled serious addiction to hard drugs and alcohol and was in and out of rehab several times throughout the years. Winehouse shot to fame with the 2006 album Back to Black , whose blend of jazz, soul, rock and classic pop won five Grammys and made her a star. Unfortunately, a turbulent marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil and overall self-destructive habits overshadowed her distinctive talent in the years since. Tabloids and the public became riveted by her erratic stage appearances, drunken fights, stints in hospital and rehab clinics, her performances increasingly rambling, stumbling train wrecks – and cause for concern. Just last month, Winehouse canceled her upcoming European tour after an awful performance in Serbia where she seemed completely out of it. Sadly, this story is almost shocking because it is not shocking. Her talent will be greatly missed. May she rest in peace. UPDATE : There were no signs of foul play in the death of Winehouse, Scotland Yard reports. It is still too early to determine cause of death. An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow.
