Selena Gomez, Lucy Hale Are Fashion Winners At Teen Choice Awards

Neutral hues dominate the blue carpet at awards show, which airs Monday night on Fox. By Amy Wilkinson Selena Gomez at the 2010 Teen Choice Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Fans curious about which stars took home surfboards from the Teen Choice Awards will have to wait until Monday (August 9), when the event is broadcast on Fox. But we’ve already selected the winners and losers from the show’s blue carpet, where the night’s invited guests parade their fashion choices for the evening. For the ladies, the evening’s preferred color palette was anything neutral, including midnight blacks and pearly whites. “Ramona and Beezus” star Selena Gomez was among the style standouts, wearing a white dress with flowy sleeves that were complemented by soft waves in her hair. “Eclipse” star Ashley Greene also shifted into neutral for the evening, wearing a light pink dress that had lace detailing. (There was also a ring on her left ring finger — wonder what that’s all about?) Also putting a spin on the trend was “Pretty Little Liars” actress Lucy Hale, whose little black dress was accented by a sparkly blue mosaic on the bust and gold buckles on the straps and at the waist. Though many fashion experts would argue that you can’t go wrong with an LBD, a couple of actresses’ outfits provided a counterpoint to that theory. “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” star Shailene Woodley looked downright dowdy in her shredded-sleeve black dress and upswept bun; the button-festooned black frock worn by Katerina Graham from “The Vampire Diaries” was also a head-scratcher. The starlets who did eschew the night’s black and white theme opted for rich, jewel-toned hues. “Victorious” actress Victoria Justice matched the blue carpet in her cute strapless dress. Fivel Stewart, the sister of “Eclipse” actor Booboo Stewart, sported a sheer-sleeved frock with a colorful, doily-type embroidery around the neckline. Several “Glee” gals were harmonious in their choice for rich shades; Amber Riley grabbed attention in a belted fuchsia number, while Lea Michele opted for a sparkly ensemble in forest green and nude. Green wasn’t such a friend to Emma Roberts, however, as she looked rather washed out in her strapless olive-colored mini dress. For the guys, it was all about channeling James Dean, with many sporting variations on the theme of leather jackets and slicked-back ‘dos. “The Vampire Diaries” star Ian Somerhalder smoldered in his leather (though he sadly kept his hair covered with a fedora), while “Glee” actor Kevin McHale complemented his hair-raising style with a striped purple shirt and black tie. Though many men chose to keep it casual in button-downs and V-neck tees, a few of the men took advantage of below-average temperatores in Los Angeles and classed it up with variations on the suit. “Glee” star Cory Monteith’s black suit and tie were given an extra edge by a pair of black sneaks, while “Fringe” star Joshua Jackson looked quite dapper in his blue suit jacket, which he paired with skinny jeans. Schultz: Republicans Want To Politically ‘Assassinate’ Pres. Obama’s Agenda

How far have we come from the era of “Dissent Is Patriotic” stickers on the bumpers of your local lefties during the Bush administration?  A host on the second-highest rated cable news network has equated political dissent with . . . assassination.   On his MSNBC show this evening, Ed Schultz stated: “Now I’m putting my cards on the table tonight as I do every night. The Republican party is on a mission to politically assassinate the president’s agenda across the board.  They want to shoot down everything.” Note how Schultz reinforces the assassination theme by adding that Republicans want to “shoot down” everything.  Does political speech get much more vile than this?  Do Schultz’s MSNBC bosses approve this kind of reckless rhetoric?

Meat Made Us Smarter

…and learning how to cook it made us human Sorry, vegetarians: Humans have meat to thank for the evolutionary changes that made us the large-brained tool-users we are today. Some 2.3 million years ago, our ancestors made the jump from gnawing all day on leaves and nuts to scavenging carcasses. This, anthropologists say, was the magic moment when our brains got enough energy to start growing to their current size—largely because we no longer had to maintain a giant gut capable of processing all those raw leaves. From there came the invention of tools—”external teeth” that meant we didn't need big sharp teeth like other predators—and fire for cooking, which made meat easier to digest and squeeze nutrition from, meaning we no longer had to spend hours a day chewing like chimps do. Cooking also taught us to share labor and brought people together for conversation in the evening, making us even more human http://www.newser.com/story/97008/meat-made-us-smarter.html added by: unimatrix0

CBS’s Attkisson Finally Exposes Fannie Mae’s Dirty Laundry

Some investigative reporters still live up to their job descriptions. On the July 20 edition of “CBS Evening News,” reporter Sharyl Attkisson exposed how government-sponsored entity (GSE) Fannie Mae and mortgage lender Countrywide “scratched each other’s backs” while their toxic loans fueled America’s mortgage crisis. Attkisson revealed new documents showing that Countrywide gave “very important person” loans to dozens of Fannie Mae executives while American taxpayers forked over $84 billion to bail out the GSE. Among the VIP loan recipients were Fannie Mae CEO Jim Johnson, who received $10 million, former Vice Chair Jamie Gorelick and former CEO Franklin Raines, whose total amounts received remain unknown. Attkisson reported the loans, but did not mention Raines, Gorelick, and Johnson all have ties to Democrats , from Bill Clinton to John Kerry to President Obama. Attkisson showed 42 Fannie Mae officials took 153 VIP loans from Countrywide. Additionally, Attkisson revealed an e-mail from Countrywide to Fannie Mae’s then Chief Operating Officer Dan Mudd attempting to cover their tracks: “Make sure the branch, and RVP, understand the sensitivity of this deal,” the first part of the e-mail read. “We already are taking a loss, it would be horrible to add a service complaint on top and lose any benefit we generate.” Attkisson concluded her report with an interview with U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., and stated that Issa would like a congressional probe of Mudd and other Fannie Mae CEOs to see if they violated any ethical codes. However, CBS News anchor Katie Couric didn’t allow Attkisson to elaborate and swiftly moved on the next story. Attkisson broke the seemingly unwritten media code of not covering the Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac debacles . Ironically, her story was aired on the evening before President Obama was scheduled to sign the massive financial reform bill that fails to include any GSE reform .

ABC Hypes NAACP Indictment of Tea Party as Racist, a Smear the Network Stoked

Four months after ABC’s World News spent a weekend defaming anti-ObamaCare Tea Party protesters as “very ugly” with “ reports of racial and homophobic slurs ,” citing “protesters roaming Washington, some of them increasingly emotional, yelling slurs and epithets ,” Tuesday’s newscast, unlike those on CBS and NBC, credentialed the NAACP ‘s charge that the “Tea Party movement is a threat to the pursuit of human rights, justice and equality for all.” Sans any ideological label, anchor Diane Sawyer set up the full July 13 story: “The nation’s oldest civil rights organization, the NAACP , has just adopted a resolution this evening at its annual convention condemning quote, ‘racist behavior by Tea Party members.’” Reporter Dan Harris relayed: The NAACP points to the racial epithets allegedly hurled at black members of Congress by Tea Party members during the health care debate and to the racist signs that critics say they spotted at Tea Party events to support its conclusion that the “Tea Party movement is a threat to the pursuit of human rights, justice and equality for all.” Going to a Tea Party leader who is black, Harris pressed: “We’ve all seen the signs. There have been signs that compare Baarck Obama to a monkey, there have been signs that have had the ‘n’ word on them. When you see those signs, how do you feel?” Harris, however, did at least quote Sarah Palin’s tweet asking: “Are liberty-loving, equality-respecting patriots racist?” And, citing an ABC News/Washington Post survey, he noted “the biggest reasons people join the Tea Party are politics and ideology, rather than views on race.” Earlier NB item on Tuesday afternoon about an ABCNews.com post headlined: “Michelle Obama Rouses NAACP Before Vote Condemning ‘Racist’ Elements of Tea Party” Back in March, NB archive: Saturday, March 20 : “ABC: Anti-ObamaCare Protest ‘Turned Very Ugly’ with ‘Racial and Homophobic Slurs’” Sunday, March 21 : “ABC’s Sawyer: ‘Protesters Roaming’ DC, ‘Increasingly Emotional, Yelling Slurs and Epithets’” Plus, from March 21 : “CBS: ‘Mean from the Start’ Health Debate ‘Turned Even Nastier Yesterday’ with ‘Racial Epithets’ and ‘Sexual Slurs’” From the Tuesday, July 13 ABC World News: DIANE SAWYER: Also on politics, a controversy surrounding the Tea Party. The nation’s oldest civil rights organization, the NAACP, has just adopted a resolution this evening at its annual convention condemning quote, “racist behavior by Tea Party members.” Tonight, the   Tea Party is fighting back and here’s Dan Harris. DAN HARRIS: The NAACP points to the racial epithets allegedly hurled at black members of Congress by Tea Party members during the health care debate and to the racist signs that critics say they spotted at Tea Party events to support its conclusion that the “Tea Party movement is a threat to the pursuit of human rights, justice and equality for all.” At the group’s annual meeting in Kansas City, the resolution had plenty of support. UNIDENTIFIED MAN: When we turn on the television and see posters and fliers that send very frightening messages to our community, we have to address it. HARRIS: Tea Party favorite Sarah Palin called the resolution “divisive,” asking today on Twitter: “Are liberty-loving, equality-respecting patriots racist?” David Webb is the co-founder of the New York City Tea Party. DAVID WEBB, TEA PARTY 365: I think the NAACP, in its march towards irrelevancy as an organization, needs an enemy to maintain its power base. HARRIS, TO WEBB: Let me push you a little bit. WEBB: Sure. HARRIS, TO WEBB: We’ve all seen the signs. There have been signs that compare Baarck Obama to a monkey, there have been signs that have had the “n” word on them. When you see those signs, how do you feel? WEBB: They’re offensive. They don’t belong there, but there will always be fringe elements. HARRIS: The biggest reasons people join the Tea Party are politics and ideology, rather than views on race. But today, the NAACP rejected the charge that it’s playing politics. BENJAMIN TODD JEALOUS, PRESIDENT, NAACP: We have no problem with the Tea Party, we have a problem with the Tea Party tolerating racists in their ranks. HARRIS: This race-based fight shows no signs of letting up. The NAACP is planning an anti-Tea Party march on Washington this fall. Dan Harris, ABC News, New York.

Dem Crack Up? Bill Press, Schultz Rip Reid For Calling Obama Weak

Hot stock tip: ConAgra Foods, makers of . . . Orville Redenbacher’s popcorn 😉 But seriously, shall we sit back and savor an incipient Dem implosion? Drudge has links up about the White House waving the white flag, having a “credibility crisis,” and hitting the panic button. This evening’s Ed Show gave another hot and salty taste of the Dem meltdown, as Ed ripped Harry Reid for calling Pres. Obama, in Schultz’s words, “a big wimp.” In a formal TV interview, Reid has accused PBO of being insufficiently “firm” and “forceful” and described him as “a person who doesn’t like confrontation.” Lib talker Bill Press also hit Harry, but at the same time effectively agreed with Reid’s critique, saying that Obama had been too nice to Republicans and that “nobody in this town is afraid of Pres. Obama.” Schultz, meanwhile, accused Reid of being a weak leader. Schultz began by accusing Reid of landing a “sucker punch” on PBO, and went from there. So fire up the microwave, blast up a batch of Orville’s best, click the video, and enjoy some entertaining Dem internecine warfare!

Schultz Warns America: Pay More Welfare Or Become ‘Third-World Country’

The time-temp clock down at the bus station here read 104 degrees this afternoon. We can’t offer readers cooler weather, but perhaps they’ll settle for some comic relief . . . On his MSNBC show this evening, Ed Schultz warned that unless the US pays out more in welfare, we risk becoming a “Third-World country.”  Schultz said it twice, so apparently it wasn’t a bizarre one-time brain camp. Ed’s on a crusade to have unemployment insurance payments extended.  Note: unemployment “insurance.”  So once payments are extended beyond what’s provided for, it’s no longer insurance: it’s welfare. But that didn’t stop Schultz from suggesting that paying more welfare is all that stands between America becoming the next Zimbabwe . . . ED SCHULTZ: It’s unconscionable what we are putting these Americans through.  And I will tell you this: this is how Third World countries get started. A bit later, Schultz floated his cockamamie theory to a “union political consultant,” who was only too happy to agree. SCHULTZ: This is going down the road of a Third World country. This is the issue: what we’re going to do with the unemployed? Tell me if I’m wrong. CHUCK ROCHA: You’re exactly right, Ed.

Immigration: Richardson Sees McCain Going Squishy If Re-Elected

Seriously: is Bill Richardson trying to wreck John McCain?   Ask yourself: what would be the one thing most likely to undermine McCain with Arizona Republican Senate primary voters? Surely it would be the possibility that if re-elected, born-again immigration hawk McCain would revert to the squishiness that led him to collaborate with Ted Kennedy on a “path to citizenship” for illegals. Yet on this evening’s Ed Show, that’s exactly what the New Mexico governor—twice—imagined McCain might do.   Schultz set the stage, describing McCain’s recent adoption of a hard line on immigration as “the biggest flip-flop of the year.” Then came Richardson, imagining a McCain re-reversal . . . BILL RICHARDSON: My view is that he is in a tough re-election, in a primary against J.D. Hayworth, and this is such a hot issue in Arizona. My hope Ed is a fter he gets re-elected that he will come back to his old position, which was as you said the Kennedy-McCain bill which has increased border enforcement but also has a path to legalization, a guest-worker program, cracking down on illegal hires, but most importantly a path to legalization. And later . . . RICHARDSON: If you’re going to get into immigration reform, you got to have some Republicans , and right now it doesn’t seem we have any.  Maybe Lindsey Graham. Maybe John McCain after he gets re-elected. So what was Richardson up to? Offering honest analysis, or slipping the shiv into McCain by suggesting his new-found harder line on immigration is a farce?
