It’s Hot Enough to Wake the Media: MSM Links Heat, Extreme Flooding to Climate Change

It had to happen sooner or later. After experiencing the hottest decade on record (2000-2009), the hottest spring (2010), and the hottest overall Jan-June period, and then a bunch of record-shattering highs around the globe, as well as heatwaves and an unusually powerful monsoon, the media was bound to draw the connection between the extreme weather and the warming planet. It’s a bit of a tricky line to walk, to be sure — no single monsoon or heatwave, no matter how crippling, proves man is causing climate change. But ignoring that our warming climate plays a role in these weather events is dishonest too. Thankfu… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Ten Reasons We All Love PBR

Oh PBR, how I love thee, let me count the ways: 1) Price: You are ridiculously cheap. I can buy thirty 12oz cans of you for about $15 in Pennsylvania. In Wisconsin I’m pretty sure I can get the same amount for one foodstamp. 2) Taste: You actually have an identifiable taste. You don’t taste like carbonated water; I can tell you are beer. Beer is good. 3) You are from Milwaukee: I am also from Milwaukee, but I am not a refreshing adult beverage. You are. 4) A/C for my Mouth: As much as I love hoppy IPA’s on hot days, they usually don’t go well with doing weekend chores because they have such a high ABV percentage, which then leads to unintentional naps and/or BIADD (Booze Induced Attention Deficit Disorder). 5) No Gimmicks: You don’t feel the need to implement any kind of cold-notification technology into your packaging. I know you’re cold because I have a sense of touch, and luckily, since your beer actually does taste like beer, you don’t need to be ice cold to avoid a gag reflex. 6) Patriotism: You are owned, grown, brewed, and packaged by Americans. Also your colors are red, white, and blue, which is code for AMERICA. 7) Funk: Either through your support of art festivals or some other hipster-generated underground marketing campaign thing, almost all of the events you sponsor tend to be a hip funky time that has cool music and interesting activities. 8) Variety: I can buy you in 12oz cans, 12oz bottles, 40oz bottles, 16oz cans, kegs, and sometimes even on tap at a few local watering holes. 9) Boats: Captain Pabst sold his shipping company to buy into his father-in-law’s brewery, after which he changed the name to his own and charted a course for Awesometown, USA. 10) Ribbons: Most people think the Blue Ribbon (or BR) comes from the award you may or may not have won way back before the internets and modern medicine, but the truth is that you guys used to literally tie a blue silk ribbon around each bottle of beer. If only breweries nowadays had that kind of style, we could really take a bite out of our unemployment problem. http://drinkphilly.com/index.php/drinks/artprofile/130 added by: DrinkPhilly

Whoopi Goldberg Makes No Apologies for Treatment of Michaele Salahi

Following an appearance on The View this week, Whoopi Goldberg approached reality TV star Michaele Salahi backstage and cursed her off. This fact is not in dispute. Both sides acknowledge the confrontation. But there are a couple differences: Salahi’s lawyer says her client was completely mistreated on the talk show, outlining her complaints and explaining what happened in a statement you can read HERE . Goldberg, conversely, pretty much says Salahi deserved everything that came to her. On yesterday’s episode, Whoopi started the show by discussing the events and not backing down from her role in them: “I went up to her and told her that she knew I didn’t hit her, and yeah, you know, how I said it: choice words. I make no apology for my choice words… I mean they were so choice you could’ve cut ’em with a knife and eaten them.” Goldberg says she was set off when Salahi’s husband pulled out his Blackberry and stared snapping photos of his wife’s heated discussion with the comedian. Michaele, meanwhile, went on The Today Show yesterday and described how Whoopi “berated” her. Again, this isn’t something Goldberg denies. She almost seems to take pride in it. ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Sequel Coming To Nickelodeon

Cable network green-lights ‘The Legend of Korra’ cartoon, but film sequel’s future is unclear. By Eric Ditzian Noah Ringer in “The Last Airbender” Photo: Paramount While the fate of a possible sequel to “The Last Airbender” remains in doubt, the small-screen version on which it is based — the Nickelodeon cartoon “Avatar: The Last Airbender” — is getting a second life. MTV News has confirmed that the cable channel is prepping a sequel to its popular anime-inspired series, which ran for three seasons and ended in 2008. The installment’s working title is “The Legend of Korra,” and it will premiere on Nickelodeon in 2011. The channel will reportedly base “Korra” on the mythology of “Airbender,” in which various nations can control water, fire, earth or air. The new show picks up 70 years after the events of the first series and will follow a teen girl named Korra, a so-called avatar who can control three of the world’s elements and is seeking to master air. “Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern ‘Avatar’ world, Republic City — a metropolis that is fueled by Steampunk technology,” a Nickelodeon press release says. “It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive.

‘The Hills’ Cast Addresses Mysterious Finale Scene

‘What’s real and what’s fake, you don’t know,’ Brody Jenner says of ending in which series seemed to break fourth wall. By Jocelyn Vena Kristin Cavallari and Brody Jenner Photo: MTV News “The Hills” came to an end with much fanfare on Tuesday night. But while the big buzz centered on Lauren Conrad’s return during the show’s live aftershow, most fans were scratching their heads about the series’ final scene. In the last scene, Kristin Cavallari gets into a waiting car destined for the airport, where she told her “Hills” pals she’d board a flight to some unnamed country in Europe. We watched as Kristin closes the car door, leaving Brody Jenner behind, waving goodbye … or so we thought. But instead of pulling away, the camera pans out to show the entire production, including crewmembers and cameramen. So, were the “Hills” producers commenting on the veracity of the events devoted fans watched unfold over six seasons? “The thing is, as you saw on the end — what’s real and what’s fake, you don’t know,” Jenner explained during the live aftershow broadcast. “Our relationship, the entire time could have been fake,” he said. “That’s one of the questions: what was real and what was fake, and we left it [open].” As for his partner in crime, Kristin, she said she enjoyed the way the show concluded. “I mean, I think we both couldn’t have been happier with the ending. We were speechless,” Cavallari said. Their ‘Hills” co-star Lo Bosworth seemed equally impressed with the final outcome and how it featured the onetime couple. “You know when the last scenes of the show were happening, I got a little [lump] in my throat,” she said. “They were great. I loved it.” The entire “Hills” crew, except Heidi and Spencer, was on hand to reminisce about their time on the show. And while the event was generally lighthearted, during a montage of Heidi’s life pre-Spencer, her sister, Holly, was visibly upset and crying. Holly told viewers she wasn’t sure about the status of Speidi, but said she hoped to one day be reunited with her sister, even praising her (“She’s the best person”). The series aftershow also allowed Spencer’s sister, Stephanie Pratt, to settle some rumors, including one that has her appearing next on MTV’s “The City,” which wrapped its second season on Tuesday night. “No! I twittered two weeks ago [that] I bought an open-ended ticket to New York,” Pratt explained. “That’s how it happened,” she said of the gossip. What did you think of the “Hills” series finale? Were you choked up? Surprised by the final scene? Tell us what you thought in the comments!
