‘Twilight: The Musical’: Five Reasons To Go

MTV News’ Amy Wilkinson tells ‘Twilight’ Tuesday that catchy songs, inside jokes make the off-Broadway parody work. By Kara Warner The cast of “Twilight: The Musical” Photo: Dreamcatcher Entertainment For the most dedicated “Twilight” fans, the yearlong wait between the theatrical releases of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” and “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” is painful, to say the least. Luckily, due to the popularity of the franchise and vampires in general, there are a variety of ways to bridge the gap, a few of which we touched on previously via fan suggestions . These include re-reading the books and re-watching the already-released movies, as well as getting your vampire fix via TV shows like “The Vampire Diaries” and “True Blood.” The latest addition to the fangtastic fray is the off-Broadway musical parody “Twilight: The Musical.” MTV News’ own Amy Wilkinson was lucky enough to attend the first preview in New York Monday. Thanks to her detailed summary, we now know more about the action in the plot, but for those who want to know more about the show’s potential and audience reactions, this week’s “Twilight” Tuesday is dedicated to digging a little deeper into the production by way of Wilkinson’s experience. This will help you know what to expect if you make the trek to New York to see the show when it officially opens. Here are five reasons you’ll enjoy “Twilight: The Musical.” It’s a Parody Although we take our “Twilight” very seriously, it’s sometimes just as entertaining to make light of the saga’s more melodramatic, overwrought elements. And when a parody is executed well, it can be a delightful companion piece to the source material. It also helps to manage your expectations accordingly. “To be completely honest, I wouldn’t say that they were incredibly high,” Wilkinson said of her expectations going in. “Mostly because this is an off-Broadway production, and from what we were told when we first arrived, they’d only been practicing for about 24 hours. So I didn’t have the highest expectations going in, but I think for the time they had it turned out really well.” The “Twilight”/ “Harry Potter” Blend Yes, Harry, Ron and Hermione make an appearance in “Twilight: The Musical,” and despite the seemingly obvious appeal to two obsessive and proud fanbases, Wilkinson reported that it’s more entertaining than off-putting. “The way it was used worked well. There might be something that is a bit cloying about it, marrying these two franchises whose fans never seem to get along very well, so it might be a bit baiting in that regard, but I think the way they did it made sense,” she said. “They traded in the three villains in the original ‘Twilight’ for three ‘Harry Potter’ characters and there were some good jokes that came out of it.” Vampires and Wizards That Sing! This is a musical after all, so we are happy to hear that the songs, while campy at times, don’t suck. Wilkinson said that one in particular is likely to get stuck in your head, a catchy little ditty called “Die Bella Die.” Apparently and appropriately, it’s Hermione’s villainous theme song. The Inside Jokes In addition to dialogue lifted straight from Melissa Rosenberg’s screenplays, the production pokes fun at a few memorable and slightly maligned moments, one of which Wilkinson said stood out for its laugh-out-loud factor. “The one moment that the entire audience busted a gut over was in reference to a scene from the first ‘Twilight’ movie, when they’re going on the biology class field trip and Alice Cullen is asking Bella if she’s going to ride on their bus. In the movie Robert Pattinson’s Edward is kind of like, ‘Oh no, she’s not,’ but in the production I saw, Colin Hanlon, the guy playing Edward, turned around and yelled as loud as he could, ‘SHE’S NOT COMING!’ I don’t know what it was about that, but the entire audience nearly died. The actor himself was cracking up, everyone was cracking up because it rings true to how bizarre that moment is in the film.” A Few Stars Are Born In the spirit of how far “Glee” star Darren Criss has come from his “A Very Potter Musical” days, there are several actors in this musical worth keeping an eye on due to their breakout star potential, like Jenna Leigh Green, Lauren Lopez and Jeffry Denman, who all play multiple roles in the production. “[Green] is pretty much the MVP of the production,” Wilkinson said. “She does four or five characters (including Hermione, Rosalie and Esme), and there are times when her characters almost have lines back-to-back and she’s running behind the stage to take off a wig or throwing off her cloak to return to the stage and deliver a line. She’s definitely one of the hardest-working people on the stage. She was great to watch.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

Rihanna Drops Teaser For ‘You Da One’ Video

Behind-the-scenes clip shows singer in London with a blond bob and gold grill. By James Dinh Rihanna in her “You Da One” teaser Photo: Def Jam Even though “We Found Love” is still ruling the charts, Rihanna is gearing up for the release of her second Talk That Talk single, “You Da One,” by releasing a behind-the-scenes teaser for the Melina Matsoukas-directed clip. In the two-minute montage , the RihannaNavy get several glimpses at a blond-bobbed Rih with a fitted gold grill and a slew of outfit changes. For one of her ensembles, the pop titan dons a gold chain necklace and midriff-baring two-piece as she grinds up against a checkered wall with life-size playing cards nearby. Another scene finds the singer in a white tank top and tattered jean shorts, swinging a cane in between two brick buildings. “We’re in London town!” the chart-topper tells the cameraman while the Dr. Luke-produced track plays in the background. “We tried to shoot our first setup outside, but it started to rain really, really hard. Then it stopped after we had to switch setups. … I’m running on one hour of sleep. I’m not even going to remember this tomorrow. My eyes are burning a little bit.” Rihanna has been dropping teasers for the “You Da One” visual for some time now. Two weeks ago, she released a clip of herself getting fitted for her grill. And just a few days ago, the singer took to Twitter to share another still, which depicted the star topless, leaning back and blowing smoke into the air . “#YOUDAONEVIDEO you know im already in trouble 4 this but, i like to keep yall in the loop,” she wrote. Fans can also expect to be kept in the loop about the video for “Take Care,” Rihanna’s collabo with Drake . The Six Awesome Moments You Missed From This Weekend’s GOP Throwdown

‘X Factor’: Why Isn’t It As Huge As ‘American Idol’?

One writer makes the case for why you should be watching Simon Cowell’s latest import. By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Jim Cantiello “X Factor” judge Simon Cowell Photo: Ian Derry / FOX Imagine a reality competition that mixes the drama of “Dancing With the Stars,” the variety-show feel of “America’s Got Talent,” the weekly singing battles of “American Idol” and the cutthroat competition between celebrity judges of “The Voice.” That would be amazing, right? Well, guess what? It exists, and it’s called “The X Factor.” But chances are you’re not watching it. Simon Cowell’s bid to make “Factor” the new “Idol” hasn’t taken off as quickly as he brashly predicted earlier this year. The show is pulling in a solid 9-plus million viewers per night, which is about half of the 20 million Simon promised. But Nielsen recently reported that the strong ratings helped the Fox Network — which also airs “Idol” — win the November “sweeps” period among the coveted 18-29 demo by grabbing the top spot among unscripted programs. And yet, even as “Factor” drills down to its final seven contestants this week, the show has failed to develop that must-see-TV aura that “Idol” has enjoyed for nearly a decade. After covering “Idol” for nine seasons, I was exceedingly reluctant to take on yet another musical competition show, but somehow “Factor” has wormed its way into my TiVo and I’ve become a major fan. So in case you haven’t been watching, here’s what I think you’ve been missing: Stars Forget for a moment that Cowell remains the biggest name in reality-TV judging, or that he recruited his Paul McCartney — Paula Abdul — to join him on the judging panel. So far, the show has hosted eye-popping performances from Willow Smith, Jessie J, Rihanna, Kelly Clarkson, Bruno Mars and, this week, Tinie Tempah. Yes, “Idol” also lands big names, but it’s often saddled with giving up prime-time slots to snoozy former winners and finalists like Constantine Maroulis, Crystal Bowersox and David Cook, whose careers have not exactly set the charts on fire. The Stage If nothing else elevates “Factor” above “Idol” or “The Voice,” it’s the elaborate, over-the-top staging. “Idol” pulls out the big guns for the finale, but from the very first live show, “Factor” has been giving us VMA/Grammy-worthy production numbers complete with backup dancers, constantly varying sets and a massive video-screen-covered stage that makes each performance feel like an event. The craftsmanship is so bombastic at times that it’s easy to forget that you’re essentially watching nobodies on a game show. Watch the remaining “X Factor” finalists explain what makes their show so unique. Variety Because of the format (which includes groups, boys, girls and over 30’s), so far this season we’ve seen rappers, country groups, pop stars, boy bands, R&B crooners and hip-hop/soul hybrids on “Factor.” Quality While “Idol” has struggled over the past few seasons to launch a bona fide star and has frequently been saddled with top 12 groupings larded with substandard singers, almost without exception, the acts that made it to the live shows on “Factor” had some legitimate commercial potential. From such eliminated groups as New Jack revivalists Stereo Hogzz to manufactured country act Lakoda Rayne and soul singer LeRoy Bell, even the early castoffs from “Factor” have a legitimate shot at making it in the industry. Add in such easily packaged finalists as cutie diva Rachel Crow, next Chris Brown-type Marcus Canty, power vocalist Melanie Amaro and hip-hop tween Astro and you have a top seven silly with possible future stars. And I’ll put former-addict rapper/crooner Chris Rene up against Lee DeWyze any day. Judges As much as we hate to love him, Cowell really is the best at this, and his banter with a more subdued Abdul was missed. Add into the mix opinionated, no-BS veteran music man L.A. Reid and weepy ex-Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger and you have a panel that is fun to watch and quick to scrap. With each judge competing against each other as well, you also get some seemingly legitimate sniping and griping among them that adds more drama to the show. And who can forget Abdul’s painfully long on-air near breakdown when pressed by annoying host to Steve Jones to choose between two of her groups during week three? Drama With all of that going on, producers have also ceaselessly hammered the rich backstories of the contestants, from fresh-out-of-rehab young dad Chris Rene and shockingly overconfident Brooklyn teen MC Astro to formerly homeless soul rocker Dexter Haygood and scrappy 13-year-old Crow. The white-knuckle moments each week when the judges are forced to potentially toss one of their own overboard — not to mention back-to-back double-elimination episodes — amps up the drama even more. “It shows people’s lives, it shows who they are … it shows what they’re about, what they represent,” finalist Rene told MTV News. “It doesn’t just show an artist or a singer. They go into your life and they’re like, ‘So who are you? What are you about? What do you do?’ … If I wasn’t me, and I was watching the show and I’d seen all the stuffs that’s going on with all the different contestants, I would be like, ‘Wow this is crazy! What’s going on here? What is this? Did they set this up? Like, is this real?’ ” Have you been watching “X Factor”? Share your thoughts in the comments below! Lady Gaga’s ‘Marry The Night’ Video Will Be ‘Perfect’

Little Monsters outside the new Gaga window displays at Barneys tell us what they expect from the clip, which debuts Thursday (December 1). By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Brian Phares Lady Gaga Photo: Emmanuel Dunand/ Getty Images Have you RSVP’d for Lady Gaga ‘s wedding yet? On Thursday (December 1), Gaga will make it official with all things nighttime when she premieres her self-directed video for her track “Marry the Night.” Shot in Gaga’s hometown of New York City in October, previews have shown that in Gaga’s world, anything can happen, including vintage-feeling trips to the psych ward and “Fame”-esque dance numbers. When MTV News caught up with some of Gaga’s Little Monsters outside of Barneys in New York City, they weighed in on what they thought might go down in Mother Monster’s latest video. “I had some inside info … lots of explosions, lots of hair, lots of makeup, lots of symbolism, lots of Gaga,” Catherine Lloyd dished. “It’s gonna be perfect.” Kyle Larkins has no doubt that the video will be all Gaga all the time. “I have no idea what to expect from the ‘Marry the Night’ video. It’s Gaga,” he said. “She’s crazy in all wonderful ways, so I’m looking forward to see what she’s going to come up with.” “My expectations are that it’s going to be over-the-top,” Alisa Lopez added. “She derives most of her inspiration from, well, her videographical inspiration — from Michael Jackson’s videos, Madonna’s videos — so I’m expecting it’ll be longer than 10 minutes.” While no one but Gaga knows what will happen in the video until it drops, Vanity Fair was on set during filming, and Gaga described it as “autobiographical,” adding that she’s “getting ready to relive the worst day of my life” in the clip. Shot on the day when Gaga was wheeled through a hospital on a gurney, she added that “it’s chaotic and sad. But I don’t want it to be safe.” The scene reportedly is based on a situation in her real life. Fan Amy Guerra made this guess about the video: “I’m expecting Gaga to reveal some stuff that we don’t know about her. … I am really excited to see it because I’m a big fan of her and I know she’ll just meet my expectations.” Related Videos Lady Gaga: Inside The Outside

Mila Kunis Attends Marine Corps Ball, Date Says He Had a "Blast" [PICS]

…Especially afterwards, when he went home and pumped his shotgun. Anyway, you may have heard about Marine Corps Sgt. Scott Moore , a serviceman who, while on active duty in Afghanistan, asked Mila Kunis to be his date for the annual Marine Corps Ball in a much-hyped viral video . Mila accepted, and this past weekend proved herself to be a woman of her word by traveling to North Carolina to accompany Sgt. Moore to the dance. Mila has shunned publicity for the event, instead letting Sgt. Moore take the spotlight to talk about the date and the fallen service members that were honored at the ball. Here’s what he had to say about the star on Good Morning America and Today: “It was a blast, it was a great time. So yes, it exceeded my expectations,” he said. Sgt. Moore picked up Mila at 5:30 pm to take her to the ball, where they spent the evening dining, dancing, and hanging out with Moore’s friends from his unit. Moore said Mila was “down-to-earth” and very interested in the uniforms and ceremonies of the Marine Corps, and that he enjoyed “introducing her to the families [so] she could really see the sacrifice a lot of my guys made.” When asked why Mila and not some other starlet, Moore said: “We actually talked about this. I’ve seen a couple of her movies and she’s obviously a pretty girl so…I thought she’d be fun so I picked her.” Service your member with sexy pics of Mila Kunis after the jump!

Toronto Screening Confirms Full Frontal in Take This Waltz, But Is that Sarah Silverman’s Snatch?

Mr. Skin’s Skin Skout caught a screening of the upcoming drama Take This Waltz at the Toronto Film Festival, and the early report confirms that comedienne Sarah Silverman appears to make her nude debut 41 minutes into the film. Sarah, along with Blue Valentine babe Michelle Williams and Bliss ‘s Jennifer Podemski , bares full frontal as the gals casually chat in a locker room. (Williams, a veteran of 6 nude roles, bares bush again at the 51-minute mark and boobs 1 hour, 37 minutes in, but this is the only skin scene featuring nudecomer Silverman). The always sarcastic Sarah has been on a campaign of self-deprecation since the news of her nude scene broke last winter, telling New York magazine that she gained 20 pounds for the role and that “In all honesty, I would say it’s a lot closer to Kathy Bates in About Schmidt than, like, Julianne Moore in Short Cuts . I am begging you to lower your expectations!” Speaking of lowered expectations, though the cast hasn’t admitted to faking their nudes, with the film still on the festival circuit our skin technicians haven’t had a chance to skinspect the footage for CGI nipples or merkins- and with Apatow regular Seth Rogen on the project, there’s always a chance he brought some of that bad The Change-Up juju with him. Our verdict? Cautiously optimistic. There IS a full frontal scene in Take This Waltz, and we’re betting Sarah is looking a lot better than her comedic sensibilities will let her admit . But with the threat of CGI nudes on the horizon, we’ll believe tits when we see ’em. For all the newest, nudest updates on Sarah Silverman , Michelle Williams and Take this Waltz , stay tuned right here at the Mr. Skin blog!

‘Cowboys & Aliens’ Will ‘Exceed’ Fans’ Expectations

Director Jon Favreau tells MTV News there’s much more to the movie than the ‘silly’ title may suggest. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jon Favreau Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images When news broke that “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau had wrangled two of the biggest names in the action-movie business — Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig — to star in his intriguing genre mash-up “Cowboys & Aliens,” that and a compelling premise proved to be enough to send scores of fanboys online seeking advanced tickets. But though there’s lots of early buzz from the marquee names associated with “Aliens” (mega-watt producers Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard are also onboard), Favreau recently admitted to MTV News that he felt pressure to deliver something extraordinary for fans. “Of course, with Ron Howard and Steven Spielberg [producing], I’m in real good hands,” Favreau said about overcoming the challenges of establishing just the right tone for the movie. “I learned a tremendous amount from them, and I think when you cast Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig — with ‘Bond’ and ‘Indy,’ those are two franchises that are fun but not silly,” he added about Craig’s 007 and Ford’s “Indiana Jones” series. “And I think that if people take a clue from who I cast in the film as to how it’s going to play, it’s a good indicator,” he explained. Favreau went on to say that there’s far more to the film than what the title suggests. “I think [moviegoers] hear the name ‘Cowboys and Aliens,’ it sounds kind of silly, but it also sounds compelling and interesting,” he said. “So if they give it a chance, they’ll see it’s a fun movie, it’s an exciting movie, and I think it’s going to exceed their expectations.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Cowboys & Aliens.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
