‘Spider-Man’ Musical Going Through ‘Trial By Fire,’ Julie Taymor Says

‘I am in the crucible right now,’ Tony-winning director told TED2011 conference. By Terri Schwartz “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” Photo: Don Emmert/ AFP To say “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” has had its share of problems is to say “Avatar” was fairly successful or “The Twilight Saga” is moderately popular. It seems that anything that could possibly have gone wrong with the show has. There have been delays , injuries , bad reviews , script issues and actors leaving , and all before the show has officially opened. Fortunately, the preview shows are selling out across the board, but the musical is struggling and director Julie Taymor knows it. The Tony-winning director hasn’t made a public statement about the problems in production since aerialist and stunt double Christopher Tierney was severely injured back in December. But during the TED2011 conference in Long Beach, California, on Wednesday, Taymor discussed the current state of the musical with an audience of more than 1,000 people. “I am in the crucible right now. It is my trial by fire. It’s my company’s trial by fire. We have survived because our theme song is ‘Rise Above,’ ” Taymor said, according to The New York Times . “Anyone who creates knows — when it’s not quite there. Where it hasn’t quite become the phoenix or the burnt char. And I am right there,” she added. At the moment, the show runners are deciding whether to continue with the planned March 15 opening or delay the musical for a sixth time. Lead actress T.V. Carpio talked to MTV News about the constant changes going on behind the scenes of the show and how she refuses to give in to the negative thoughts pressing on “Turn Off the Dark” from the outside. Both she and Taymor seem to feel that the musical is on the precipice of greatness, and they have the faith to continue on until it reaches that goal. “It’s right there in the palm of my hands,” Taymor said. “In all of my company’s hands. I have beautiful collaborators. We as collaborators only get there all together. I know you understand that. You stay there going forward and you see this extraordinary thing right in front of your eyes.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .

‘The King’s Speech’ Actors, Director Overjoyed By Oscar Nods

‘Not used to this much joy, or this much champagne at this hour,’ best-actor nominee Colin Firth said in a statement. By Jocelyn Vena Colin Firth in “The Kings Speech” Photo: The Weinstein Company “The King’s Speech” leads all films with 12 nominations for next month’s 83rd Academy Awards . The Tom Hooper-directed flick scored Oscar nods for Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role, Actor in a Supporting Role and Actress in a Supporting Role, to name a few. The movie’s lead actor, Colin Firth, expressed his excitement over his nod in a statement to MTV News. “Currently celebrating with my colleagues three feet above the ground,” said Firth, who also received a best-actor nomination last year for “A Single Man.” “Not used to this much joy, or this much champagne at this hour.” Firth also spoke to the “Today” show shortly after the nominations were announced early Tuesday morning (January 25). “It seems like I was fired out of a cannon this time last year,” Firth said about his Actor in a Leading Role nod. “And now it’s like I’m orbiting Pluto.” His co-star Geoffrey Rush opened up about his Actor in a Supporting Role nom to MTV News. “As an Australian, I’m as excited to be recognized and honored by the Academy as my character must have been when his London speech-therapy business flourished when the future King of England happened to pop by one day,” Rush said in a statement. “This story has struck such a rich resonant chord with audiences of all ages, which is very exciting — to have your work honored by your industry peers is even better.” Hooper, who picked up a nod in the Directing category, also issued a statement to MTV. “I am absolutely overwhelmed by the twelve Oscar nominations for ‘The King’s Speech.’ I am so grateful to the Academy,” Hooper said. “I am incredibly proud of my extraordinary cast and crew. This is a day I will remember for the rest of my life.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The King’s Speech.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Mark Hoppus Calls New Blink-182 Album ‘Expansive’

Bassist says upcoming project reflects the band’s past and even gets a bit dark. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Jim Cantiello It’s already been described as “ambitious” and “weird,” and now Mark Hoppus is tossing another adjective onto the ever-growing pile of descriptives used for Blink-182’s upcoming album : “expansive.” That’s what he told MTV News backstage at Z100’s Jingle Ball in New York, but he didn’t stop there. Hoppus also hinted that the band’s forthcoming disc will also be an all-encompassing affair, one that not only harkens back to Blink’s past, but also touches on the dark days they’ve had in the present, including the deaths of longtime producer Jerry Finn and friends Chris Baker and DJ AM . “We’ve gone through a lot of really heavy stuff over the past few years. … There’s plenty of heavy stuff to write about,” Hoppus said. “I think in moments it will [be dark]. We’re still just barely getting into the whole writing process. We have about three or four songs done. I wouldn’t say it’s going to be a dark record; I think it’s really an expansive record. There’s stuff that sounds like what we were doing on the last Blink record, and there’s stuff that sounds like what we were doing 10 years ago and stuff that we’ve never done before.” Of course, whether all that equates to a “mature” album is a matter of debate, one Hoppus wants no part of. Because after a lengthy hiatus and several dark days, he and his Blink mates are now focusing on the future — and it looks bright indeed. “There’s going to be a new record, tours, the whole deal,” he said. “We’re in the studio pounding it out right now, and it’s going really good. It’s been so great to be back in the studio with Tom and Travis creating a new album. We can’t wait to get it out there.” What are you expecting from a new Blink album? Let us know in the comments! ‘Breaking Dawn’ To Film In Louisiana And Vancouver

Summit Entertainment has announced two locales for the two-part ‘Twilight Saga’ ending. By Eric Ditzian Jacob (Taylor Lautner) is waiting for Bella in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit Entertainment “Breaking Dawn” will be filmed in both Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Vancouver, Canada, Summit Entertainment announced on Friday (July 9). Split into two separate films but being shot simultaneously, the production will ramp up in the fall and continue over the next year. No exact start date for filming was given. The first film will be released on November 18, 2011. No official release date for the second part has been set, but as a Summit exec told MTV News this week, the studio is exploring multiple dates in 2012, both in the summer and later that year. Many other questions remain about “Breaking Dawn,” the most intriguing of which is the 3-D question: Will it either be shot using 3-D cameras or converted to 3-D during post-production? Summit tells MTV News that such discussions are currently under way, but that no decision has yet been made. Much of the cast is onboard with the 3-D idea , including Kristen Stewart . “I’m probably speaking out of line or whatever, but I think it would be awesome,” she told MTV News. “Nobody knows what it’s like to look through the eyes of a vampire. What if [Bella] opens her eyes to this extraordinary world? It could be cool.” Bill Condon (“Dreamgirls”) will direct both parts of “Breaking Dawn,” taking over for “Eclipse” director David Slade. Pattinson and the rest of the cast wrapped production on “Eclipse” at the end of October 2009, which means that when the stars show up on-set for “Breaking Dawn,” about a year will have passed since they slipped into their respective roles as vampires and werewolves.
