Usher Remembers Being A ‘Pizza Face’ On ‘When I Was 17’

‘I had really, really bad acne ‘ he admits in Saturday’s episode. By Mawuse Ziegbe Usher on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News He’s known as one of the smoothest R&B sensations to grace the stage, but when Usher was 17, he grappled with a far less flattering image. “I went through this phase where I had really, really bad acne,” the singer admits on the latest episode of “When I Was 17,” premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. Usher, who was 17 in 1995, reveals with a grin that his nickname was “Pizza Face.” “His acne was so horrible,” recalled one of Usher’s more blunt friends, Keith. “His face was so jacked up.” Music mogul and producer Jermaine Dupri remembered how the entertainer’s spotty complexion led him to shy away from the spotlight. “He didn’t want to go out. He wanted to stay in,” Dupri says. “He was a little ashamed of what was going on with his face.” The singer went to extreme, and ultimately unsuccessful, lengths to disguise his breakouts. “As a dude, you’re not gonna put makeup on your face, right?” Usher said. “I tried that, it didn’t even work.” He may have experimented with cosmetics and spent a few more nights at home but the multiplatinum star didn’t let his acne hold him back from wooing the ladies. “I was 17, so I would still try to talk to girls [and] get past it,” Usher reasoned. He even had some smooth lines to drop when he wanted to draw attention away from his skin. ” ‘Don’t look at that, look at my eyes, baby. I’m trying to say something real serious to you right here,’ ” Usher recalled, reenacting his complexion-deflecting dating moves. “I know I have pizza face, I don’t care.” In the end, his skin cleared up and the singer said it was just a matter of riding out a rite passage that many teens are forced to endure. “This is something that all 17-year-olds have to deal with,” Usher said. “You can’t run away from it.” — this week featuring B.o.B, Usher and Ne-Yo — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV Related Videos Usher, B.o.B And Ne-Yo Clips From ‘When I Was 17’ Ep. 18 Related Photos When I Was 17 | Ep. 18 | Celebrity Photo Flashback

Katy Perry Drops Some Hipster Cleavage

I don’t think I’m cropping these pictures properly, obviously I want to get Katy Perry’s hipster boobs in the shot, but her face not so much. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes her face looks good, but next to those boobies it just doesn’t stand a chance. If she wants to look good she should have her picture taken next to a donkey or one of the girls from the Jersey Shore , but stay away from the boobs because the cleavage is going to win every time.

Interpol Introduce Fans To New Music At Intimate L.A. Show

Band also breaks out favorites ‘NYC,’ ‘Evil’ in Santa Monica, California, recording studio. By Ryan J. Downey Paul Banks of Interpol performs onstage September 6 Photo: Jeremiah Garcia/ KCRW SANTA MONICA, California — They may have named a new song “Barricade,” but there was nothing of the sort separating Interpol from their fans Monday night as they performed for 150 lucky people in a small recording studio on the eve of their new album’s release. The performance will air Thursday on KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic” radio show, alongside a short interview. The band played eight songs, more than half of them from their self-titled fourth album, which was released Tuesday (September 7). Fan favorites like “NYC” were included, with the invite-only audience joining frontman Paul Banks in the “But hey, who’s on trial?” refrain during a set-closing “Evil.” In less than two weeks, the New York band will open for U2 in giant venues, but on Monday night, Berkeley Street Studios in Santa Monica was the very definition of intimate. With soft lighting and heavy drapery, producer Bob Clearmountain’s studio had a hipster living-room vibe that meshed nicely with Interpol’s dark atmospherics as the invited guests sipped free booze. Astute indie-rock fans recognized Dave Pajo from his work with Slint and Yeah Yeah Yeahs as he did a more-than-admirable job stepping in for recently departed bassist Carlos D . Brandon Curtis, from Secret Machines, is another new addition to Interpol’s live lineup, providing “keys and BVs,” as the band likes to say — “BVs” being musician shorthand, of course, for backing vocals. Vocalist/guitarist Banks, guitarist Daniel Kessler and cocktail-carrying drummer Sam Fogarino — who together comprise the “official” lineup in press photos and the like — walked casually to the small stage with Pajo and Curtis and quietly picked up their instruments shortly after 8 p.m. Kessler wore a big smile throughout the proceedings, which makes sense, as these makers of Joy Division-meets-Wall of Sound dark rock have a lot to smile about right now. The group’s new album not only marks a return to the indie label that launched them, Matador, after a stint with the majors, but a return to form as well, according to critics. Reviews were mixed for Our Love to Admire (2007), but folks are already comparing the new record favorably to Interpol’s beloved Antics (2004) and their debut, Turn on the Bright Lights (2002). On the eve of their fourth album’s release, as the band that wrote “NYC” found themselves on the other side of the country in front of an intimate private audience, they seemed relaxed and happy and certainly looked as dependably well-dressed as ever, all in black. They opened with “Success,” which also kicks off the new album, followed by another new track, “Summer Well.” Playing material that isn’t immediately familiar to an audience can be awkward, but it was received warmly, with excited cheers greeting “Narc,” from Antics. Enthusiasm was high in the room throughout, but the fans kept themselves at a politely low volume, with equal reverence for being part of such a special occasion as for the band’s moody crescendos juxtaposed with tightly wound stops, starts and often bass-led rhythms. After another new song, “Lights,” Interpol paused for an interview conducted by KCRW music director Jason Bentley. They spoke highly of the new touring lineup and fondly of both Carlos D (whose departure was amicable) and his contributions to the new album and Matador Records. The second half of the set began with a pair of two more new songs, “Try It On” and “Barricade,” before the group closed with “NYC” and “Evil,” which was met with the most raucous reception. The group, which had performed with measured composure throughout, was at its loosest during this song as well, with Banks visibly grinning about the sing-along and Kessler moving a bit more. ‘Zombieland 2’ Director Giddy About 3-D Zombie Splatter

“I think it’s cool to see stuff fly at your face. The idea of zombies splattering into the lens is exciting for me,” Reuben Fleischer tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Jesse Eisenberg in “Zombieland” Photo: Sony Pictures When MTV News caught up with Reuben Fleischer last week, he was hanging out in a dusty junkyard outside downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was hardly a glamorous day on the set of a studio picture, but that was where Fleischer had chosen to make “30 Minutes or Less,” his follow-up to the $75.6 million-grossing “Zombieland.” But, as he oversaw some wacky pyrotechnic displays at the junkyard, he was thinking about the direction for “Zombieland 2” and shared some of his thoughts with us. First off, Fleischer confirmed he’ll shoot the sequel with 3-D cameras, rather than use a controversial post-production process. “When it comes to 3-D, I feel pretty strongly that you should shoot it in camera,” he said. “I feel like it just looks so much better. If you’re going to make a 3-D movie, go ahead and make a 3-D movie. I would definitely, if we do ‘Zombieland 2,’ make it in 3-D and want to shoot it in 3-D.” While no stars yet have deals in place, Fleischer said “all the cast is excited to return,” including Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin and Jesse Eisenberg, who also stars in “30 Minutes.” Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are currently at work on the script, and Fleischer said they’re exploring multiple scenarios, from a plot that picks up shortly after the conclusion of the first film to one that begins further into the future. Regardless, though, “Zombieland 2” will likely explore pre-zombie days as well. “One of the fun things about ‘Zombieland’ is it jumps all over the place in terms of the storyline,” Fleischer said. “It’ll go to before zombies to after zombies and all around those worlds. What’s fun about the sequel is we have freedom and flexibility to show different periods. We might have scenes before the zombies, or we might have some months after, or potentially stuff further down the road. Through the voice-over and the way the movie is structured, we can really explore all different sides of it.” “Zombieland 2” was announced as a 3-D film back in December, when the heady glow of “Avatar” began to consume all of Hollywood. In the months since, many 3-D films have failed to connect with audiences and a sort of 3-D fatigue has set in among many moviegoers. Yet, Fleischer is not worried about backlash, nor does he agree with what James Cameron said recently about how “Piranha 3-D,” a new horror movie, “cheapen[s] the medium.” “I love 3-D” Fleischer said. “I have a hard time saying when it’s not done well, because I have almost a childlike experience watching 3-D. It’s just so cool to me when stuff comes out of the screen. That may sound na

David Bowie Denies Lady Gaga Collaboration

Rock legend’s official site calls document claiming that Bowie and Gaga would work together a ‘hoax.’ By Gil Kaufman David Bowie Photo: Virgin Lady Gaga has often spoken about her love for chameleonic rock icon David Bowie and his gender-bending, glitter-splashed style. Last week, when rumors emerged on a Gaga fansite that the Thin White Duke would be working on Gaga’s upcoming album, fans of both artists were understandably intrigued, excited and a bit skeptical. But Bowie’s official website has denied rumors that he would lend his legendary croon to a song reportedly titled “Vinyl.” The statement, written by the site’s news editor, read in part: “When this tall story first surfaced a few days ago it was denied as a hoax in an update to the same article, and we thought that would be the end of it. I guess some folk see what they want to see though.” The scanned document that popped up last Thursday, which bears the hoax-y title “confirmation of recorded music,” also lists Gaga collaborator RedOne as one of the album’s producers and engineers. Also named on the fake list are famed R&B producer Teddy Riley and his daughter Taja, as well as former Gaga collaborator Fernando Garibay (Pussycat Dolls, Britney Spears). Song titles cited include “Hooker on a Church Corner” and “Scream Loud.” “The rumor that David Bowie has been working with Lady Gaga seems to have taken off,” continued the statement on Bowie’s site. “The hoax was started by some bright spark or other with the above forgery … However, in a nutshell, the suggestion that David Bowie is producing and participating in the production of Lady Gaga’s next album is untrue and a hoax.” Gaga has kept a tight lid on the details about her second full-length studio effort. In an interview with i-D , she said, “The new album is my absolute greatest work I’ve ever done, and I’m so excited about it … The message, the melodies, the direction, the meaning, what it will mean to my fans and what it will mean to me in my own life — it’s utter liberation. I’m on the quest to create the anthem for my generation for the next decade, so that’s what I’ve done.” Though she’s had a close, hit-heavy relationship with RedOne, Gaga promised that she’s updating her sound on the still-untitled album with a slate of new producers who she’s declined to identify. “I will never tell because as soon as I tell, everyone starts working with them,” she said of her new album’s production team. “So all I can say is that nobody knows who they are. They’re all new.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists David Bowie Lady Gaga
