Source: Marvel-Disney The Oscar Case For “Black Panther” Black History Month 2019 has been the spiciest dumpster fire of our lifetime –a cold, saltless, sadness-flavored McDonald’s fry withering away in a Walmart parking lot–no, seriously, it’s been Shemar Moore’s raggedy cornrow wiglet from “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” in February form. But, um, at least we can watch “Black Panther” defy the odds and pry Best Picture from the Academy’s crusty white hands. And yes, there’s a chance–a very small, balled up lunch lady ponytail of a chance–that Marvel’s biggest (and Blackity Blackest) blockbuster will win and I’ve laid out my compelling case below. So here's the thing, M'Baku is PERFECT. Thanks for coming to my TED talk. #BlackPanther pic.twitter.com/r7xZgq6msF — Strong Black Lead (@strongblacklead) September 11, 2018 1. M’Baku’s LEGENDARY Challenge Day speech Winston Duke’s spectacular monologue isn’t “I Have A Dream” but it’s close. CHALLENGE DEY. FADDA SEFE. WE WILL NOT AVE IT, O. GLORY TO HANUMAN. So. Many. Hits. And felt the greatest Que probate ever. (Now, don’t get it twisted, Samuel L. Jackson is still the Monologue Gawd and President of the CAPS LOCK Coalition but our good mountain bruh M’Baku delivered the most quotable scene of 2018) Hey Auntie #BlackPanther pic.twitter.com/Xkn8s9Fe5W — FREEISH (@freeishmedia) February 18, 2018 2. “Hey Auntie!” I’ll never forget the theater swerving into chaos when Killmonger dropped “hey auntie!” It was just so deliciously Black–“light ice”-Black–and felt like Jenifer Lewis reaching deep into her purse and handing you dusty butterscotches in church. Ryan Coogler be knowin. Moments like these just show the relationship that T'Challa and Shuri have as siblings, and I buy it. #SaturdayNightScifi #BlackPanther pic.twitter.com/wBBY1JKufp — Chris Burris (@burriscj) February 24, 2019 3. Funniest “what are thooose???” joke ever (many, many years later) I’ve watched “Black Panther” 7978696987 times and laughed at Shuri’s “what are those???” joke all 7978696987 times (because I’m 12). It’s that one Facebook joke from 2002 your mama texted you this week that actually made you laugh. So proudly corny yet fresh. Classic. When Forrest Whitaker says “Bleck Pentha” pic.twitter.com/90EUxvs3VD — Maliik (@Obee1ne) February 26, 2018 4. Forrest Whitaker’s Bleck Pentha Powah Very few things were funnier in 2018 than Forrest Whitaker’s wonky-eyed Wakandan accent. The whole entire theater cackled at every ‘bleck’ and ‘pentha’. All chill was streept eweh and it’s STILL hilarious. One of my favorite parts of #BlackPanther is when the Ques came in at the end to save the Deltas from the Sigmas. #ColemanLove pic.twitter.com/UbAkHLkVaY — Nisan Joseph (@NisanJoseph) February 17, 2018 5. Pop Culture-Shaping Impact “Black Panther” changed the world. Literally. From showing our people being amazing, to adding ‘colonizer’ to our vocabulary to weaponizing a wig to making the sciences appealing to young Black kids across the world. It was truly a world-stopping moment and the best film I saw in 2018.
Move over fam! North West may be too young for a boyfriend , but she is not too young to be a cover girl. The 5-year-old daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West has landed her first modeling gig! And it is absolutely adorable. You can find little Nori on her first solo cover for WWD’s issue about Generation Z , titled “Keeping Up With the Future.” Not to anyone’s surprise, Kim helped style her own daughter for the shoot, showing off North’s rainbow Dr. Marten boots, a bright pink tunic top and even pink eyeshadow! “My most stylish and beautiful baby girl North shot her 1st cover for @wwd !!!!” Kim wrote alongside pictures from the photo shoot. “She loves fashion & beauty and has so much fun doing this!” The reality star also took to Twitter to share her excitement, “I’m seriously so proud of my Northie! She picked her looks and eyeliner color and is so involved and loves fashion & beauty so much so she has the best time at her @wwd shoot!” “Kanye & I always say she’s Kristen Crawley’s style twin.” “All she wanted was nachos on shoot day and we made that happen!” Kim went on to tell her followers. “Thank you @wwd for capturing these amazing memories for her.” WWD also shared their thoughts on their youngest cover girl: “At five years old, North West, the famous daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, has captivated the digital realm with her cross-generational appeal,” WWD wrote. “Without a public Instagram or YouTube channel of her own, she’s too young to fully understand what a digital footprint is. And yet, hers is already wildly popular.” The outlet continued to praise North for her distinct fashion sense and impressive eye makeup skills. As if she had no guidance from her makeup obsessed family members. “West, whether she knows it or not, is at the forefront of a generation that is highly connected, engaged with fashion and beauty and individualistic in style,” said the fashion magazine. “Called Alpha, signifying a new beginning, this age group is unlike any the world has ever seen.” Forget Millennials, Gen. Z is taking over! (particularly the ones with important parents) Kendall Jenner, who is the family’s most “skilled” member , if you will, due to her successful modeling career, tweeted “North is giving me a run for my money that’s for sure” after seeing her niece’s cute photos. And while most little girls stick to dressing up their dolls, North isn’t playing pretend. I mean come on, she’s so Vogue. View Slideshow: 13 Times Kim Kardashian Has Dressed Up Her Daughter

Jussie Smollett has been accused of staging his own assault. Following his arrest, some of Jussie’s Empire castmates demanded that he be fired . They have gotten their wish. On Friday, FOX announced that Jussie is out for the rest of the season. On Friday, Executive Producers Lee Daniels and Danny strong released a statement on Jussie Smollett’s status on Empire . Along with EPs Brett Mahoney, Brian Grazer, Sanaa Hamri, Francie Calfo, and Dennis Hammer, they said: “The events of the past few weeks have been incredibly emotional for all of us,” the statement begins. “Jussie has been an important member of our EMPIRE family for the past five years,” the showrunners affirm. “And,” the statement continues. “We care about him deeply.” That affection has been complicated by his alleged deception, which has his friends and colleagues feeling betrayed and angry. “While these allegations are very disturbing,” the statement continues. The showrunners emphasize: “we are placing our trust in the legal system as the process plays out.” “We are also aware of the effects of this process on the cast and crew members who work on our show,” the statement acknowledges. “And to avoid further disruption on set,” the Executive Producers write. They continue: “we have decided to remove the role of ‘Jamal’ from the final two episodes of the season.” That is a complicated decision. Late last month, Jussie reported to police that he was the victim of a vicious hate crime. Apparently targeted for his fame, sexuality, and race, Jussie said that he was beaten, placed in a noose, and that bleach was poured on him. Unfortunately, Chicago Police determined that he had staged the assault himself. He allegedly paid two brothers to do so, and paid them for their efforts by check — and also called them on his cell phone. In addition to general disappointment that someone would allegedly fake such a heinous crime, many are bewildered. Years of watching police procedurals have most people expecting tracks to be covered a little more thoroughly than that. Jussie has maintained his innocence, and his attorneys released a statement to that effect. “Today we witnessed an organized law enforcement spectacle,” his attorney said on Thursday. Jussie’s arrest and public malignment, his attorney says, is something “that has no place in the American legal system.” “The presumption of innocence, a bedrock in the search for justice, was trampled upon,” his attorney claims. This was done “at the expense of Mr. Smollett and notably, on the eve of a Mayoral election.” Jussie’s attorney is suggesting that his arrest by the (famously accused of racism) Chicago Police Department was a political stunt. “Mr. Smollett is a young man of impeccable character and integrity,” his attorney insists. Jussie is a man “who fiercely and solemnly maintains his innocence,” the attorney notes. Even when he apologized to his castmates for their current troubles, he insisted that he would never do this to them. “And,” his attorney concluded, Jussie “feels betrayed by a system that apparently wants to skip due process and proceed directly to sentencing.” What a complicated, upsetting case. Presumably, if he is vindicated, he will be welcomed onto Empire with open arms. And maybe even if he isn’t. After all, Ryan Lochte famously claimed to have been robbed at gunpoint, causing an international incident. He was later invited to multiple interviews. Just saying. What Jussie is accused of doing is serious, but not unprecedented. View Slideshow: Jussie Smollett: This is How He Staged His Assault

A beloved TV host who happened to also be a member of one of Hollywood’s most famous families has passed away under mysterious circumstances. Clark Gable III died at home at the age of 30 today. Gable was the grandson of Hollywood legend Clark Gable. Though never as famous as the iconic star of Gone With the Wind star, the younger Gable managed to escape from his grandfather’s long shadow and make a name for himself during his short time on earth. Gable was a business owner and television personality who hosted three seasons of the popular reality series Cheaters. Sadly, his life was cut short for reasons that still are not entirely clear. No cause of death has been determined, and Gable’s family seems utterly shocked over the loss. Gable’s mother, Tracy Scheff, spoke with Radar Online about today’s tragedy: “I got a call from his girlfriend, and I didn’t even know what she was saying, she was so hysterical,” Scheff told the site. “He was an amazing kid, a very loving and extremely sensitive soul.” Clark’s sister, Kayley Gable, mourned her brother on Facebook, writing: “My brother was found unresponsive this morning…I love you Clarkie, I’m so sorry we couldn’t save you. “My heart is broken and shattered.” Gable lived a tumultuous life that sometimes made him a fixture in tabloid headlines. In 2009, he was stabbed in the ribs during a fight at a party. One year later, he was arrested for shining a laser pointer at an LAPD helicopter and served 10 days in jail. Gable’s life stabilized in recent years, however. In 2018, he welcomed his first child, a daughter named Shore. Friends and family say Gable was a thoroughly devoted father, and his mission in the final year of his life was clear — to provide the best possible life for his daughter. Sadly, that mission was cut tragically short. Gable’s family says he had no known existing health conditions, and they have no inkling as to what might have caused his tragic passing. Our thoughts go out to all of Gable’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2019: In Memoriam

Peter Tork was the wise-cracking guitarist for the 1960s teen-pop sensation, The Monkees. Sadly, he has now passed away. Tork was 77 years old. The Washington Post reports that Peter Tork passed away on Thursday, February 21. Tork’s sister, Anne Thorkelson, did not specify her brother’s cause of death. However, the guitarist was diagnosed with adenoic cystic carcenoma, a rare form of cancer, in early 2009. Tork had received extensive treatment, using both surgery and radiation, in 2009 to combat the slow-growing head and neck cancer. It is unclear what role that serious heatlh crisis may have played in his death 10 years later. Tork’s friends, family, and colleagues released a statement on his official Facebook page. “It is with beyond-heavy and broken hearts that we share the devastating news” “that our friend, mentor, teacher, and amazing soul, Peter Tork, has passed from this world” “Please know that Peter was extremely appreciative of you, his Torkees.” After being recommended by a man who failed his audition, Peter Tork auditioned for The Monkees . He joined the pop-rock group called The Monkees, a then-fictional band created for the eponymous sitcom. Though Tork was an accomplished musician, he and the band’s other three members did very little with instruments in their early albums. Over time, he would play the bass guitar, keyboards, harpsichord, and banjo during the band’s recordings. His character on the television series was a “lovable dummy,” a role that endures across multiple genres because it is so endearing to audiences. The Monkees , the television sitcom, ran from 1966 to 1968. The band by the same name, however, played from 1966 to 1971. As a group, they produced six albums, four of which went to Number 1 on the Billboard chart. Peter Tork did leave the band before it was officially disbanded. Though the group had hoped to perform more together, ultimately they had musical differences. Tork also said that the filming schedule, and the way that it cut down on his time to actually work on music, exhausted him. Despite the band officially disbanding in the early 1970s, the group has held multiple reunions and reunion tours. With the The Monkees playing in syndication, they found reborn cultural relevance in the Twenty-First Century. Tork made his last appearance with the band in 2016 as they played at the Pantages in Hollywood. Without him, the two surviving members of the band, Nesmith and Dolenz, went on the road as a duo in 2018. At the time, they were vague about Tork’s personal reasons for not traveling with them. Tork released a statement to Rolling Stone to explain his distance from his former bandmates. “I have in general made no secret of the fact that all these recent years of Monkees-related projects, as fun as they’ve been,” Tork began. He continued: “have taken up a lot of my time and energy.” ” Moving forward, I have blues projects that I want to give my attention to. .. I’m shifting gears for now,” he admitted. “But I wish the boys well,” Tork concluded. “And I’ve learned to never say never on things further down the line. ” View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2019: In Memoriam Countless fans are heartbroken over the passing of Peter Tork. His cultural impact spanned generations — and so did his career. We will keep his loved ones in our thoughts during this difficult time.

Investigators announced during a news conference Wednesday that they’ve concluded that Tamla Horsford’s death was accidental after she allegedly fell off a deck during a “football moms” slumber party. During the news conference, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office announced they were closing the case because investigators said there was no evidence of foul play, reports WSBTV. The Sheriff’s Office added that they interviewed 30 people including people at the party before they reached their conclusion. They add that the medical examiner ruled that Tamla’s injuries were consistent with a fall from the home’s deck and added that acute ethanol intoxication (alcohol) was a factor. According to several people including Tamla’s best friend Michelle Graves, that just can’t be true. Michelle told WSBTV that an independent medical examiner found multiple injuries all over Tamla’s body and she and the family are fighting to have their voices heard. They’re totally lying,” Graves said on a phone call with reporter Mike Petchenik. “They’re not out of the woods, because this was not an accident.” Another person speaking out is Tamla’s father Kurtland St. Du Jour who spoke to Majic 107.5’s Ryan Cameron and is adamant that his daughter’s death was no accident. He cited a previous Facebook post from the owner of the house where Tamla died as proof. “Her injuries were not consistent with what they’re saying,” St. Du Jour said. “This is only was brought to light until we started pressuring them and they started getting pressure from everywhere else. […] The only thing we got was a death certificate with a lot of inconsistencies. […] The homeowner at one time went on Facebook and said “Nobody fell off a deck.” St. Du Jour believes that some of Tamla’s injuries were post-mortem and thinks she was “taken out” before her body was thrown from the deck. “Her wrist was cut, the bone was broken, where they said the body was, there was no blood pool. She was already dead.”
