Simon Cowell Breaks Down ‘X Factor’ Rules, Reveals Audition Dates

‘You will have never seen a show like this before in America,’ former ‘American Idol’ judge says in new promo. By James Dinh Simon Cowell Photo: Ian Derry / FOX While “American Idol” draws closer to the televised stage of the singing competition, the U.S. version of “X Factor” will soon begin its countrywide search for the next global superstar. In a new promo for the highly anticipated competition, Simon Cowell talks about the rules for the forthcoming series, promising that America has yet to see a show like this. “The show is basically a singing competition with a twist,” the music executive says in the promo. “The auditions are open to anyone who can sing. You can be 12; you can be 112. You can be in a group; you can have 100 people in the group. It doesn’t matter.” Cowell goes on to explain that the contestants are later separated into four categories: young guys, young girls, older singers and vocal groups. However, “X Factor,” which premieres in September, isn’t just a challenge between talented singers, but also between judges, who will mentor contestants once they make the final rounds. “I’ll assure you one thing. You will have never seen a show like this before in America and a lot is going to happen that will surprise you,” Cowell continued. “But as a platform, if you’re a performer, this is going to be a great opportunity for you.” In addition to the contest’s age freedom, Cowell explained that contestants will have to audition in front of a live audience, saying, “If you can come out and nail it in front of 3,000 or 4,000 people, then you’ve got the makings of a star.” Ultimately, the former “Idol” judge said he’s serious about his search for talent in America. “I’m going to come back to America and say, ‘I’m serious about this’ and ‘I’m serious about finding talent,’ ” he said. “I’m going to guarantee the winner of this competition 5 million cash. It’s a $5 million audition, and you’re going to get the cash if you win; you just better be good.” “X Factor” audition dates, according to a press release:

Elton John Reveals What He Would Have Changed About ‘American Idol’

‘Let’s have bands, let’s have songwriters, let’s change the format a little,’ he tells MTV News of what he would have shaken up as a judge. By Kara Warner Elton John Photo: MTV News Now that “American Idol” has kicked off its 10th season with a bright, shiny new group of judges, it’s almost hard to remember that chaotic time over the summer when the fate of the panel was in limbo — back when Jessica Simpson, Justin Timberlake and Elton John were all rumored to be in consideration. When MTV News caught up with Sir Elton recently as he promoted the upcoming animated film “Gnomeo & Juliet,” for which John composed original songs, we asked if he’ll be making any appearances on “Idol” this season. “I don’t know if you’ll see me on this season,” he said. “But you won’t see me judging, obviously! But I don’t know if I’m going to be on it. They’ve always been very, very generous to the AIDS Foundation,” John said of the “Idol Gives Back” charity show. “I’m very, very grateful. They’ve been helpful to us. I don’t know if I’m going to be on or not. I can’t answer that question.” With regard to fellow Brit and former “Idol” judge Simon Cowell’s “X Factor,” however, John brightened a bit when we asked what he thinks of it and how well it will do in the U.S. ” ‘X Factor’ is going to be a huge show,” John said. “It’s going to be huge, because you can have bands on there, and that’s one thing I wanted to change, if I had been on ‘American Idol,’ ” he revealed. “Get away from the solo stuff. Let’s have bands, let’s have writers, let’s have songwriters, let’s change the format a little, and that’s why ‘X Factor’ is going to do so well, because it’s a different lineup. You can have bands and groups. That’s more interesting I think.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘American Idol’: We Have Never Used Auto-Tune

Controversy over use of pitch-correction software on ‘X Factor’ causes show to release statement. By Gil Kaufman Photo: FOX In the wake of the scandal over the use of the pitch-correcting software AutoTune on the season premiere of the British singing reality show “X-Factor,” the producers of “American Idol” released a statement denying that they had altered contestants’ vocals during the competition. “We have never, nor would we ever, use Auto-Tuning during the ‘American Idol’ competition,” unnamed producers of the show said in a statement released Thursday, according to the Associated Press . No allegations had been made that “Idol” had employed the technology, but the blowback from the “X-Factor” scandal was so bad that it seems “Idol” brass felt they needed to nip any suggestions in the bud. As the AP noted, singers on “Idol” are often criticized for sounding “pitchy”; during the show’s most recent season, mop-haired finalist Tim Urban was often so clearly out of tune that his run on the show surprised many longtime watchers. There have been other mini-scandals on “Idol,” such as the admission last year that the group sing-alongs that begin the results shows are lip-synched . But no one has suggested that performances that count toward the competition are tweaked. In response to the controversy, judge and producer Simon Cowell said, “people have got to be able to trust ‘The X Factor’ … we are not faking anything,” and promised that AutoTune will not be used again on the show. The Daily Mail reported that Cowell spent the week speaking to producers of the show — which he will bring to the U.S. in 2011 — and that an episode originally intended to air on September 4 will be shown this Saturday in an effort to move beyond the doctored-vocals scandal. Producers of the show claimed that AutoTune was only used to clean up sound from the audition footage, which is shot in a studio where there are more than 40 microphones in the room. But even a cursory listen to the tweaked bits from last week makes clear that the software beloved by musicians from T-Pain to Sean Kingston was used to clean up shaky vocals from a number of contestants. “X Factor” sources have admitted that AutoTune has been employed in the past as well, but denied that it had been used to make some singers sound better and others worse for entertainment purposes. Though “Idol” producers made the pre-emptivestrike against AutoTune , they still did not pull back the curtain on the most pressing “Idol” issue: who are the show’s new judges? With the fresh faces expected to take their seats after Labor Day, “Idol” watchers are eager to get confirmation on reports that Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and singer/actress Jennifer Lopez have joined the panel. Greta Van Susteren Says Spitzer-Parker Show ‘Bad News for Keith Olbermann!’

Fox News host Greta Van Susteren says the just-announced new CNN show pitting former New York governor Eliot Spitzer against faux conservative Kathleen Parker is bad news for MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann. Writing at her Greta Wire blog Wednesday, Van Susteren said, “[I]f CNN is to be successful, it will have to draw viewers from Keith Olbermann’s viewers.”   She continued, “The total number of cable news viewers seems to be a limited number so they have to grab from Olberman [sic].” Van Susteren elaborated as to why she doesn’t think Spitzer-Parker will take viewers from “The O’Reilly Factor”: You might ask why I don’t mention above Bill O’Reilly whose FNC’s O’Reilly Factor also airs at 8pm? That’s obvious — O’Reilly is SO FAR AHEAD OF EVERYONE IN ALL OF CABLE NEWS that NO ONE can lay a glove on him. No one even tries to compete with O’Reilly so I don’t include him in this discussion! O’Reilly dominates the cable news business. He has been #1 – by a giant margin – in ALL of cable for almost 10 years.  Is she right? Will this new program hurt Olbermann’s ratings, or has CNN become an also ran in this time slot? Stay tuned.
