Florida Teacher Gets 22 YEARS in Prison For Sex with Students

Jennifer Fichter, a 30-year-old Florida teacher, was sentenced to 22 years in jail for having sex dozens of times with three teenage students. One of the 17-year-olds got her pregnant, no less. “I hate what I have done,” Jennifer Fichter told the court in Polk County. “I wish I could go back and think about [the victims] before me. But I can’t.” “I can’t do that … If you hate me, I understand.” Hate wasn’t a word used by the judge, but he did call Fichter a predator and handed down the harsh sentence of more than two decades: “You’re going to have a long time to think about what you did. I trust that your faith is real, and you’ll have a long time to let your faith work.” “When you come out you’re a different person. It bothered me that there was references to that faith and yet there was this activity.” A former Central Florida Aerospace Academy teacher, Jennifer Fichter was arrested 15 months ago and pleaded guilty to 37 counts . Each sexual offense carries a maximum penalty of 15 years, so she could’ve been facing 500 years in prison if you look at it that way. At one point, Fichter became pregnant by one of her victims and had an abortion, she said in a phone call with that victim’s mother. “It hurts,” one mother told the court. “I saw myself losing my son before my very eyes and there was nothing I could do to reach him.” Fichter has 30 days to appeal her sentence.

[ Madamenoire ] Supreme Court Poised To Take Case That May Wipe Out Public Sector Unions On Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to take on a case that may nix laws that demand mandatory union payments from all public employees from certain professions, USA Today reports. Ten California public school teachers are challenging public unions, claiming that the obligatory collection of union fees — even from non-union members — to support collective bargaining is a violation of their First Amendment rights. The lawsuit, funded by Washington-based conservative group Center for Individual Rights, said that full dues for teachers who are a part of the union are $1,000, LA Times reported. Non-union members must pay $650 for the cost of collective bargaining. The teachers are seeking to overturn Abood v. Detroit Board of Education. While speaking to Hip-Hop Wired at the 2015 BET Awards, the socio-conscious singer revealed his thoughts on the inhumane actions of Dylann Roof and the Confederate flag waving high in his neighboring state. “Charleston…was just a sad thing,” he exclaimed. “It’s shame you can’t go praise the Lord and be one with your faith.”…“I think that any flag that has anything to do with anything negative needs to come down,” he continued. Do You Even Care? Lauryn Hill Drops New Nina Simone-Inspired Music From New Album [Audio]

Lauryn Hill Drops New Nina Simone-Inspired Track From New Album Don’t call it a comeback for Lauryn … Via Complex Just days after her cover of “Feeling Good” added a fair amount of fuel to the hype fire surrounding both the forthcoming Nina Simone tribute album entitled Nina Revisited: A Tribute to Nina Simone and the Netflix documentary What Happened, Miss Simone?, Lauryn Hill is teasing even more Simone-inspired new music. Though Hill calls the tease a “snippet,” the clip’s 2:30 length gives a much less nuanced hint of the full track’s tone than the average 15 or 30-second teaser. “I’ve Got Life” is a raw and welcomed interpolation of Simone’s 1968 single “Ain’t Got No, I Got Life, ” with Hill’s vocal energy pulling the timely interpretation tastefully into the modern age. Are you over L-Boogie and all her shenanigans or are you eagerly anticipating new tunes from the former Fugee? Image via WireImage

GTFOHWTBS: Presidential Wannabe GOP Goon Rick Perry Calls Charleston Church Shooting “An Accident”

Jeb Bush, Chris Christie And Rick Perry Avoid Talking Gun Control Or Race After Charleston Shooting It should come as little to no surprise that the Republican candidates for President are poorly equipped to deal with matters of race or gun violence. Via NY Daily News reports : Jeb Bush and Chris Christie mourned the murders in Charleston without blaming lax gun laws or discussing race Friday while addressing an audience of religious conservatives. And potential presidential candidate Rick Perry, the former Texas governor, referred to the murders as an “accident” — though his spokeswoman said he intended to say “incident.” Perry, in an interview with the conservative publication Newsmax, criticized President Obama and other liberals’ “”knee-jerk reaction of saying ‘if we can just take all the guns away this won’t happen.’” At the Faith & Freedom Coalition in Washington, Christie declared that the shootings were “depraved” and “unthinkable” before suggesting that tighter gun control could not have prevented the shootings. “Laws can’t change this, only the goodwill and the love of the American people can let those folks know that that act was unacceptable, disgraceful,” he said, calling on people to pray for the families of the dead. In his remarks, Bush said initially that he didn’t know what motivated Dylann Storm Roof. “”I don’t know what was on the mind or the heart of the man who committed these atrocious crimes,” Bush said, adding: “In times like these, in times of great national mourning, people of faith, all of us must come together.” He did not mention guns. Roof made it clear during his shooting spree on Wednesday that he was there to kill black people. In appearances Thursday at the convention, Sens. Marco Rubio, Rand Paul and Ted Cruz, other leading Republican presidential candidates, also avoided blaming guns. This is some BS… We can’t allow another Bush to set foot anywhere near the White House. And isn’t Rick Perry the one who used to vacation by the place with the N-Word nickname?

Tim McGraw to Headline Sandy Hook Benefit Concert, Gun Advocates Up in Arms

Country music superstar Tim McGraw will headline July concert to benefit Sandy Hook Promise, a group that seeks to protect children from gun violence. Surprisingly, or perhaps not, this announcement resulted in serious backlash from gun advocates calling McGraw a hypocrite and a whole lot worse. Among the critics was fellow country music star Travis Tritt, who tweeted his disdain for McGraw’s concert, and he was far from alone in that sentiment. The blog Bearing Arms, for its part, reported the story with the headline “Tim McGraw Poised to Dixie Chick Himself With Gun Control Benefit Concert.” McGraw “seems poised to make a similar, potentially career-ending move,” the blog argued, referencing the Dixie Chicks’ Iraq War controversy of 2003. Lead singer Natalie Maines unabashedly slammed President George W. Bush over that military initiative, and the group’s popularity slowly declined. Coincidence? Natural progression of a pop country girl group peaking around then anyway? Perhaps, but many have linked McGraw’s and Maines’ comments. Meanwhile, McGraw responded that he supports gun ownership, but added, “I also believe that with gun ownership comes the responsibility of education and safety.” Most certainly, the 47-year-old husband of Faith Hill said, “when it relates to what we value most, our children … I can’t imagine anyone who disagrees with that.” In his announcement, McGraw said, “Out of this tragedy a group was formed that made a promise to honor the lives lost and turn it into a moment of transformation.” “Sandy Hook Promise teaches that we can do something to protect our children from gun violence. I want to be a part of that promise – as a father and as a friend.” View Slideshow: Faith Hill and Tim McGraw Photos: Through the Years Unlike McGraw, Billy Currington, who would have been the opening act for the July concert, succumbed to the pressure and bowed out of the concert. Writing on his Facebook page, Currington said he would donate to a local organization, but “I’ve never been one to take on controversial issues – I’m a singer.” The Sandy Hook Promise group formed to honor the 20 children and six staff members gunned down in an elementary school in December 2012. Adam Lanza , 20 entered the Newtown, Conn., school and went on a rampage. He also killed his mother prior to the attack and committed suicide afterward. The incident is the deadliest school shooting in the U.S., yet little or no action was taken on the federal government level amid pressure from gun advocates. Gun control: Should regulations and laws be strengthened? YES. Fewer guns, fewer tragedies! NO. It’s unconstitutional and won’t stop anything! View Poll »

Val Kilmer: Dying Due to Bizarre Religious Beliefs?

Actor Val Kilmer was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery over the weekend as a result of severe bleeding caused by a tumor in his throat. Now, TMZ is reporting that Kilmer has been ignoring his potentially deadly condition since the summer as a result of his religious beliefs. Kilmer is a member of the Church of Christian Science, which teaches that health problems are healed by prayer, not medical treatment. The acclaimed actor was apparently so adamant in his conviction that his faith would save him that family and friends who suggested he go to a doctor were instantly cut out of his life. The Tombstone star’s health has been the subject of much scrutiny from the press in recent years. Kilmer’s weight gain in the early 2000s was followed by a sudden drop in pounds that many took as an indication of a medical affliction. Over the past few months, Kilmer took to wearing a scarf in public, reportedly to conceal the swelling in his neck. Those closest to the actor are said to be encouraged by the fact that Kilmer has finally acknowledged the need for medical treatment. He is currently said to be in stable condition, but his recovery could be a extremely difficult one.
