David Letterman on Newtown Tragedy: It Makes Me So Sad

David Letterman struck an uncharacteristically somber note Monday night, addressing the Newtown, Connecticut shooting for nearly seven minutes. Returning from commercial, the comedian, looking visibly saddened, noted the beauty of the Christmas decorations on CBS’ Late Show set. David Letterman Sandy Hook Statement He then touched upon the senseless massacre of 26 people – including 20 children – at Sandy Hook Elementary School, saying, “It makes me so sad.” “The lights … they’re really for kids. You think about this horrifying circumstance. What part of that do you think about that’s going to make any difference?” “Do you think about the kids in the class? That’s too awful to think about,” said Dave, himself the father of a little boy and a Connecticut resident for many years. “Do you think about the parents and their friends and getting that message from the school and finding out that their lives are irrevocably broken, ruined?” “You think about your own kid. I take him to school every now and then. Are we supposed to be worried about dropping our kids off at school now?” “I never worried about it before. I always thought, well here, school is a good place where my son will be free of the idiot decisions made by his father.” Letterman then addressed both gun control and mental health, areas that have become the focus of a fiery public debate over policy reform. “Believe me, I’m not dumb enough to think that this is a problem of guns,” Letterman said. “Before there were guns, people were killing one another.” “And you can’t just say that it’s mental health or emotional problems because people with all manner of problems don’t necessarily kill each other.” But citing a document prepared by the show’s researchers, Letterman did go on to acknowledge some frightening statistics about firearms. “Since 1994, there have been 70 episodes of school shootings, (all) after the Brady Bill had passed (in 1993). Good lord, does that surprise you?” he asked. Letterman acknowledged that listening to President Barack Obama’s Newtown speech at Sunday night’s memorial made him “feel a little bit better.” “He’s going on the record, (taking) some kind of action… In a small measure, I feel better that he’s looking out for us in that regard. It’s a sad, sad holiday season.” Indeed.

Elsewhere In The World: Physically Abused Afghan Women Set Themselves On Fire To Escape Beatings And Marriage

These girls are on fire…..literally Afghan Women Setting Themselves On Fire To Avoid Domestic Violence Young women in Afghanistan are resorting to life-threatening measures by doing what they see as they only way out of a life of abuse at the hands of their husbands….and sometimes even their own family members. via ABC News “My brother-in-law, mother-in-law, and my father, they were all beating me. They wouldn’t let me go outside.” Outwardly, the young girl once so full of life in the western Afghan city of Herat, looks just like the other patients in this hospital wing: Young, afraid, and wrapped in white bandages nearly from head to toe. But her medical report, like the others, carries a dark secret. “From day one, I wasn’t happy,” she continues. “I didn’t want to be married to him, but my parents forced me. The place where I got married is far from the city, and I didn’t want to go there.” Cultural norms dictated Wahida be a “good wife” and do as her father instructed. Before long, she’d given birth to a baby girl, a mark of shame, according to some Afghans, that her first born wasn’t a boy. After the birth, the beatings got worse. Eventually, they became so regular, so severe, that Wahida did the unthinkable. She set herself on fire. When she was brought to the hospital, her in-laws insisted it was an “accident.” Their story: Wahida, like a good Afghan wife, was cooking in the kitchen when suddenly a gas cooking canister exploded. Admitting the young woman had set herself on fire would bring shame to the family’s honor, and had to be covered up at all cost. This story, and the many others like it, are truly heartbreaking. And to adding to the horror of this article, the woman mentioned above was actually 3 months pregnant at the time she set herself on fire. You can read her entire story and others like it here . Hide Ya Kids!!! Fifth Grade Freakazoid Teacher Senetenced To 10-Years For Assaulting Her 12-Year-Old Student!

What the hell?? According to the San Antonio-Express News , she had numerous encounters with the boy …and thankfully, his Dad caught her and pressed charges: A longtime elementary school teacher whose repeated sexual encounters with a 12-year-old student came to light following a high-speed chase in which she let the boy drive her SUV was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison. Lucinda Rodriguez Caldwell, 41, choked back sobs as she was placed in handcuffs after asking state District Judge Lori Valenzuela for probation. Although the judge denied the request, she did retain jurisdiction of the case, leaving open the possibility that Caldwell could be released from prison on shock probation sometime in the next six months. “I just want to say that I’m sorry for what I did and I apologize to the court, to (the child) and his family, and to my family,” Caldwell said through tears during the brief sentencing hearing. “I have lost so much because of what I did, and I ask the court to let me stay with my family and take care of my children,” she said. Caldwell had been an educator for 16 years and was teaching fifth grade at Cable Elementary in the Northside Independent School District when she was arrested in July 2010 after the boy’s father took him to police to report the sexual assaults. Earlier that morning, at about 3 a.m., the father had recognized the teacher’s Ford Explorer outside his house after realizing that his son wasn’t home, court documents state. The SUV sped off and the father pursued in his own vehicle for about 30 miles before both vehicles were pulled over in Hondo. The traffic officer didn’t make an immediate arrest but returned the boy to his father and advised him to contact the San Antonio Police Department, according to court documents. Caldwell reached a plea agreement in October in which she agreed to plead no contest to indecency with child by exposure — a third-degree felony — instead of aggravated sexual assault of a child, which could have resulted in a sentence of up to life. Both sides also agreed to a 10-year sentence, with the stipulation that prosecutors would remain silent as Caldwell asked the judge to let her serve the term on probation. In addition, Caldwell agreed to surrender her teaching certificate. Neither Caldwell’s accuser nor his family attended the hearing. “We felt like we had a good case, but the family was worried about putting the young boy through the emotional ordeal of a trial,” First Assistant District Attorney Cliff Herberg said of the plea agreement. “We wanted to be respectful of the family’s desires.” After the allegations were revealed, the boy appeared to withdraw from friends and family, prosecutors said they were told by the family. Although the boy has since made progress, his father feared that testifying at a trial would cause setbacks, according to Adriana Biggs, chief of the white-collar-crimes division. Since the arrest, Caldwell and her two children have moved to Eagle Pass. Her husband testified on her behalf Tuesday, suggesting that her “exemplary record” as a teacher prior to the incident provided a more accurate portrayal of who she is. “She was by all accounts a very good, dedicated teacher,” added defense attorney John Carroll. “The public humiliation and shame has been very difficult for her to deal with.” She’s got some dayum nerve asking the Judge for fawking probation! Oprah’s Dad Overdrawn At Bank And In The Middle Of A Nasty Divorce

His wife Barbara is trying to throw him and Oprah some serious shade. After claims he’s cheated on her and accusing Oprah of conspiring against her, it sounds like Barbara Winfrey is diggin’ herself into a deeper hole. According to The Daily Mail: Troubles continue for Vernon Winfrey, the 79-year-old father of talk show host Oprah, as he reported to a Tennessee court that he has overdrawn at his bank. Now Mr Winfrey is returning with accusations that Barbara, who is asking for spousal support, makes far more than the $282.33 he makes per month. Barbara told The Tennessean that in addition to the salary he earns from his barbershop, Vernon also receives $25,000 ‘every three months from a trust funded by his daughter’. Barbara hopes to have Vernon pay for their mutual bills and expenses for the duration of the trial, which given the many areas of disagreement, may go on for some time. She also claims that her husband conspired with his billionaire daughter to have her thrown out of their home in East Nashville, Tennessee even though she has nowhere to go. Another aspect of the case is the supposed violent threats that Vernon made to Barbara over the course of their 12-year marriage, including one occasion where her husband ‘became angered at her, chased her with a gun and threatened to shoot her. She also claims he had ‘more than one adulterous relationship’.. The couple lived together in the gated Laurel Brooke subdivision in Williamson County’s Grassland community, according to the Tennessean, in a property worth almost $1.5million. But because the home is titled in Oprah’s name, both she and her father have been trying to force Barbara – who is seeking alimony support – out of the marital home even though she has nowhere to go, according to the court papers. The store in Nashville, Tennessee, was bought by Oprah last week for $475,000. Barbara Winfrey said the purchase means the chat show host, who now runs her own TV network, has gained control of the business and cut her out. ‘I know what is going on. I’m tired of it, and I’ve had enough,’ Barbara Winfrey told WSMV TV in Nashville. Barbara told the local media that Oprah was controlling her father. ‘He believes what he’s told. His daughter doesn’t care about the community. His daughter doesn’t care about the barbershop. But I do,’ she said. WSMV said they had confirmed that Oprah, who is worth an estimated $2.7billion, paid $475,000 for the barber shop. In a telephone call to the TV station Vernon said: ‘My wife and I, we have not been getting along well, and I did not want to endow myself to another drawn-out, struggling debt.’ Vernon, a former town council official, has run a barbershop in East Nashville for 50 years. ‘When I’m gone, I’m glad I’ll be able to say I left the neighborhood looking nice,’ Winfrey said. He said his daughter had urged him to give up cutting hair, but he planned to continue. ‘Some folks say, “Winfrey, you’re kind of old to be doing it.” I say, “You’re right, but I feel good,”’ he said. This just seems like a sad situation to deal with at 79 years old. Images via youtube

12-Year-Old New Jersey Girl MURDERED By Two Teens For Bike Parts!

Her little body was found stuffed in a recycle bin…SMH . And two teenage brother’s, age 15 and 17, are being held by Police and face multiple charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, disposing of a body, theft, and tampering with a body. All of this was over their dumb azz scheme to steal parts from her BMX bike. The boys’ Mom helped Police and turned in evidence from one of her son’s Facebook pages. According to The Daily Mail : Two teenage brothers were charged with murdering 12-year-old Autumn Pasquale after luring her into their house so they could steal parts from her BMX bicycle, authorities said today. Autumn, whose body was found stuffed in a household recycling bin late Monday night after she vanished over the weekend, was promised parts for her bike by the two, authorities said, but the teenagers were really plotting to steal parts from her model. The stunning development in the case came after the boys’ own mother turned them in when she noticed a suspicious posting on one of her son’s Facebook pages, Gloucester County prosecutor Sean Dalton said at a news conference. Police also revealed they believe Autumn was killed by strangulation, and there were no signs of sexual assault. Dalton added Autumn, who was riding her bike at the time she disappeared was lured to the boys’ house, where belongings including her bicycle were found. Three teenage brothers live at the home, neighboring teens told the Associated Press. Neither of the two arrested were named by Dalton. The house was a place where teens frequently hung out and had parties, some neighbors said, and one of the brothers often bought and sold BMX bicycle parts, the teenagers said. Autumn’s body was found around 10 p.m. Monday in the bin just blocks from her house and from Borough Hall, where thousands of people gathered earlier in the evening for a tearful candlelight vigil to pray for her safe return. An autopsy released today revealed that Autumn died from ‘blunt force trauma, consistent with strangulation,’ Dalton said. Autumn, whose 13th birthday would have been next Monday, was last seen around 12.30pm on Saturday pedaling her white bicycle away from the Clayton home where she lives with her father, her two siblings, her father’s girlfriend, and the girlfriend’s children. A life for bike parts? We hope they both get life for taking this girl too soon. Images via facebook

Steven Spielberg Says He’s ‘No Longer Interested’ In Action Pics

Jaws , Indiana Jones , Jurassic Park – Steven Spielberg has set the bar for the worldwide blockbuster. Sure, he’s taken praise for other genre as well, including his Best Director win for Schindler’s List (and another for Saving Private Ryan five years later). On the cusp of his Lincoln premiere for the closing night of the AFI Fest next month, the wildly successful director-producer-writer said he is “no longer attracted” to action films, even as some are on his plate. CBS’ 60 Minutes spotlighted the director and his latest Oscar-buzzed film, which had a sneak “work-in-progress” screening at the recent New York Film Festival. The filmmaker reiterated what many of those first crowds said about the film, describing it as less action-packed than many of his previous titles. “I knew I could do the action in my sleep at this point in my career,” he said. “In my life, the action doesn’t hold any … it doesn’t attract me any more.” Was that a possible moment of exuberation considering the feature is widely tipped to be a mass contender this awards season? Spielberg, however, is set to direct Sci-Fi thriller Robopocalypse , which is set in the aftermath of a robot uprising and a quick check of his IMDb page has him set to direct a possible Indiana Jones 5 . Also during the segments on the popular long-running Sunday night news program that his latest, about the 16th President of the United States, focusing on the last months of his Administration when he and abolitionists labored to pass the 13th Amendment soon after his re-election on the waning days of the Civil War, was partly inspired by a reconciliation with his father. “[President Lincoln] was the father of the nation in need of repair,” said Spielberg. “And in a sense, the movies I’ve made recently have reflected the positive relationships that my dad and I have enjoyed for 20 [to] 25 years.” “I was an outsider. The kid that played clarinet at band, which I did,” said Spielberg, who shared that he was bullied at school. He dealt with severe anti-Semitic attacks at school and said he denied his Jewishness for “a long time.” While his mother noted during the interview that he and his father were not close, it was in fact his dad who gave him something that would change his life – a camera. Though his parents later divorced when his mother left after falling for her husband’s friend, Spielberg didn’t know for years the circumstances of their break-up. He idolized his mother and used his sentiment, channeling it to the maternal character Dee Wallace in E.T. In Schindler’s List , Spielberg said, “I did everything I needed to do to tell the story the way I thought the story should be told, to give it as much integrity as I could, never expecting it to make a dollar. The film went on to deliver a worldwide box office haul of $321million and win best picture and director Oscars at the 1994 Academy Awards.” It was his turn at facing down the anti-Semitism he felt growing up. In his latest, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Spielberg researched for the topic for 12 years. “I think the film is very relevant to today. It’s about leadership. And it’s about telling the truth. I think there was a sense of darkness for him…He had to end slavery and abolish the war. And there was darkness in his personal life.” [ Sources: The Guardian , CBS 60 Minutes ]

WTF?? Wisconsin State Rep. Roger Rivard Says “Some Girls Rape Easy” In Regards To High School Teenager Sex Abuse Case

This guy…SMFH Wisconsin State Rep. Richard Rivard Makes Offensive Comment About Women’s Rape Via JSOnline A state representative is drawing heat for saying that his father had told him when he was young that “some girls rape easy” as a way to warn him that a woman could agree to sex but then later claim that it wasn’t consensual. Freshman Rep. Roger Rivard (R-Rice Lake) in December discussed a case with the Chetek Alert newspaper in which a 17-year-old high school senior was charged with sexual assault for having sex with an underage girl in the school’s band room. The newspaper quoted him as saying his father warned him, “Some girls rape easy” – meaning that after the fact they can change what they say about whether sex was consensual. On Wednesday, Rivard told the Journal Sentinel that the article did not provide full context of his comments and that his father’s exact words had been slightly different from how they appeared in the Chetek Alert. He told the Journal Sentinel that his father had advised him not to have premarital sex, and he took that seriously. “He also told me one thing, ‘If you do (have premarital sex), just remember, consensual sex can turn into rape in an awful hurry,’ ” Rivard said. “Because all of a sudden a young lady gets pregnant and the parents are madder than a wet hen and she’s not going to say, ‘Oh, yeah, I was part of the program.’ All that she has to say or the parents have to say is it was rape because she’s underage. And he just said, ‘Remember, Roger, if you go down that road, some girls,’ he said, ‘they rape so easy.’ Bruh, we get that some girls have tried to claim a false rape in the past, but surely there is a better way to express that than this.
