Republican National Committee Spent Almost $2,000 At S&M Strip Club

Talk about a grand ol' party! Records show the Republican National Committee dropped $1,946 at a West Hollywood, Calif. strip club last month, but a spokesperson insisted that RNC chairman Michael Steele was not among the ooglers. “The chairman was never at the location in question, he had no knowledge of the expenditure, nor does he find the use of committee funds at such a location at all acceptable,” said RNC spokeswoman Doug Heye, who added that the committee was investigating the expenditure. Records filed with the Federal Election Commission show the RNC picked up the hefty tab at Voyeur West Hollywood, a high-end strip club that has hosted such notables as bad girl Lindsay Lohan and supermodel Heidi Klum. In a review last October, the Los Angeles Times said the bar's “dark, leather-heavy interior is reminiscent of the masked orgy scene” in “Eyes Wide Shut,” the 1999 Stanley Kubrick film starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. The club features a heavy net suspended above the lounge area where topless performers – dressed in little more than masks and bikini-bottoms – writhe above the heads of clubgoers, the paper reported. “Even more provocative scenes,” the paper added, “are played out in an enclosed glass booth area adjacent to the club's dance floor area.” The kinky costs come at a time when Steele is already under fire from many within the GOP for his high-flying ways. He recently took some heat for moving the RNC annual meeting from Washington, D.C. to Hawaii. And one recent analysis by Politico.com found that compared with 2005, the last comparable year preceding a midterm election, RNC spending on private jets had doubled, limo trips had tripled, and meal expenses jumped from $306,000 to $599,000. The RNC has still managed to out-raise the Democratic National Committee during most recent months, records show. But the DNC was more than happy to express a little mock outrage yesterday over the the RNC's latest expenditures. “If limos, chartered aircraft and sex clubs are where they think their donors money should be spent – who are we to judge?” jabbed DNC spokesman Brad Woodhouse. “But it shouldn't give voters much confidence in Republicans when they say they want to get back in charge of federal spending.” Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2010/03/29/2010-03-29_gop_family_values… added by: keithponder

Russia: Dozens Killed in Moscow Subway Blasts

March 29, 2010 2:19 a.m. EDT Moscow (CNN) — Explosions rocked a pair of central Moscow subway stations during morning rush hour Monday, killing at least 37 people and wounding 10 others, Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry said. The first blast occurred about 8 a.m. at Lubyanka subway station. That explosion killed 25 people — 14 aboard the train and 11 on the platform. The Lubyanka station is near the Kremlin and the nation's intelligence service, the Federal Security Service. Another blast happened about 30 minutes later at Park Kultury station, on the same train line. The Emergency Situations Ministry reported 12 dead in the second explosion. Russian TV said the blast killed 15 people and injured at least 10 others. Millions of commuters use the Moscow metro system every day. Are you there? Send CNN photos, video text Officials immediately cast suspicion on Chechen separatists for the explosions. A female suicide bomber in August 2004 killed nine people and herself, and wounded 51 others, when she detonated a bomb outside a subway station in northeastern Moscow. In February 2004, a suicide bomber detonated a bomb on a Moscow metro train, killing 40 people and injuring 100 others. A suicide attack in 2003 killed 15 people at a Moscow concert. Chechen terrorists killed hundreds in 2004 at a school in Beslan, Russia. They also were suspected in the downing of two Russian airplanes that year in an attack that killed 89. Chechnya is a southwestern Russian republic, in the Caucasus Mountains region. The Chechens have long fought for independence from Russia. Chechnya's population of 600,000 to 800,000 is primarily made up of Sunni Muslims and Russian Orthodox Christians. Thousands have been killed and 500,000 Chechen people have been displaced in their conflict with Moscow. CNN's Matthew Chance contributed to this report. added by: EthicalVegan

Idaho first to sign law against health care reform

Idaho took the lead in a growing, nationwide fight against health care reform Wednesday when its governor became the first to sign a measure requiring the state attorney general to sue the federal government if residents are forced to buy health insurance. Similar legislation is pending in 37 other states. Constitutional law experts say the movement is mostly symbolic because federal laws supersede those of the states. But the state measures reflect a growing frustration with President President Barack Obama's health care overhaul. The proposal would cover some 30 million uninsured people, end insurance practices such as denying coverage to those with pre-existing conditions, require almost all Americans to get coverage by law, and try to slow the cost of medical care nationwide. Democratic leaders hope to vote on it this weekend. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100317/ap_on_go_co/us_health_overhaul_states_9 added by: ibrake4rappers13

Congressional Budget Office releases its analysis of health care bill.

Comprehensive health care reform will cost the federal government $940 billion over a ten-year period, but will increase revenue and cut other costs by a greater amount, leading to a reduction of $130 billion in the federal deficit over the same period, according to an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office, a Democratic source tells HuffPost. It will cut the deficit by $1.2 trillion over the next ten years. The source said it also extends Medicare’s solvency by at least 9 years and reduces the rate of its growth by 1.4 percent, while closing the doughnut hole for seniors, meaning there will no longer be a gap in coverage of medication. The CBO also estimated it would extend coverage to 32 million additional people. The CBO score is the last piece House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was waiting on before putting the puzzle together on the House floor. A contingent of Blue Dogs has been holding out support, insisting that the bill be fully paid for and not increase the deficit. The numbers give a major boost to Pelosi and her leadership team, which can now begin the whip count in earnest and can specifically point to the cost savings. (You can read more of this article on the Huffington Post .) Personally I am impressed that the bill does as much as it does.

New Broadband Policy will Revolutionize Communication

Dramatically increasing Internet speeds to 25 times the current average is one of the myriad goals to be unveiled in the National Broadband Plan by the the Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday. The highly anticipated plan will make a series of recommendations to Congress and is aimed at spurring the ever-changing communications industry to bring more and faster online services to Americans as they increasingly turn to the Internet to communicate, pay monthly bills, make travel plans and be entertained by movies and music. Congressional Ban on Earmarks Sends Lobbyists Scrambling

Jolted by a sudden tightening of the rules, lobbyists and military contractors who have long relied on lucrative earmarks from Congress were scrambling to find new ways to keep the federal money flowing. House Republicans, seeking to outdo the Democrats in ethics reform, went even further Thursday by agreeing to swear off all earmarks, for both nonprofit and commercial organizations, for the next year. “This is the best day we’ve had in a while,” said Representative Jeff Flake, an Arizona Republican who has been a fierce opponent of earmarks — no-bid contracts directed by lawmakers — but had found little support among Republican colleagues before this week. “In terms of us getting this moratorium, the stars were aligned. What the Democrats did certainly motivated the Republicans.” http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/12/us/politics/12lobby.html?hp added by: jeffissleeping

3.1M customers face Oscar night without broadcast

Millions of cable subscribers faced the prospect of Oscar night without the Academy Awards broadcast Sunday after ABC's parent company switched off its signal to Cablevision customers and the two companies blasted each other for failing to reach a deal in a dispute over fees. In dueling statements dispatched early Sunday, the two companies traded blame for the stalemate ahead of one of the most-watched nights of television. “Cablevision has once again betrayed its subscribers,” said Charissa Gilmore, a spokeswoman for the Walt Disney Co. and ABC Television Group, in a statement. “Cablevision pocketed almost $8 billion last year, and now customers aren't getting what they pay for … again.” Cablevision Systems Corp. said the stall in negotiations should be blamed on Disney CEO Bob Iger. “It is now painfully clear to millions of New York area households that Disney CEO Bob Iger will hold his own ABC viewers hostage in order to extract $40 million in new fees from Cablevision,” said Charles Schueler, a Cablevision executive vice president, in a statement. The signal can still be pulled from the air for free with an antenna and a new TV or digital converter box. Cablevision has argued that Disney is seeking an additional $40 million a year in new fees, even though the company pays more than $200 million a year to Disney. Disney counters by arguing that Cablevision charges customers $18 per month for basic broadcast signals but does not pass on any payment for ABC to Disney. The dispute is similar to a standoff at the end of last year between News Corp. and Time Warner Cable over how much Fox television station signals were worth. That tussle, which threatened the college football bowl season and new episodes of “The Simpsons,” was resolved without a signal interruption. Cablevision also feuded with Scripps Networks Interactive Inc. in a January dispute that temporarily forced the Food Network and HGTV off the service. Neither side provided terms of an agreement that restored the channels after three weeks. Disney and Cablevision have been airing dueling advertisements about the ongoing dispute for the past week. Also, lawmakers in Washington have chimed in, suggesting the Federal Communications Commission step in. cont. added by: JanforGore
