Corey Feldman Skipping Corey Haim Funeral Today, Planning Separate Memorial Within the Month

Corey Feldman will not be at Corey Haim’s funeral today out of respect for his best friend and fellow former child star’s family’s wishes, the actor said in a statement. “In the days following my best friend Corey Haim’s death, I have spent much time with his mother Judy, who has always been like a mother to me,” Feldman said. “Due to their strong religious beliefs and need for privacy,” he continued. “The family has decided to make Corey Haim’s funeral on Tuesday a small private affair.” The private funeral service will take place Tuesday in Toronto, and is funded Startifacts, a celebrity memorabilia Web site, which volunteered to donate $20,000. The money for the funeral will come from the auctioning off Haim’s belongings. His family asks fans to send flowers to a local cancer ward instead of the service. Corey Feldman will be MIA today, but says he will be planning a separate, public memorial for his Lost Boys co-star that will reportedly take place around April 2 . “I am working with a few people who were close to Corey to put a memorial together within the next month,” he said. “The media will be invited to honor and celebrate the legacy he left behind, along with friends, fans and the Hollywood community.” Corey Haim died Wednesday at the age of 38 of an apparent drug overdose while at his mother’s Los Angeles. He fought a long battle with substance abuse in life. Haim’s mom said he had an enlarged heart, pulmonary congestion and water in his lungs at the time of his death, which has been linked to a massive drug ring . The L.A. County Coroner’s office is awaiting results of toxicology tests and has not ruled out a drug overdose, though it does not appear to be foul play or suicide.

Corey Haim’s MTV Interviews Through The Years

MTV first caught up with the late ‘Lost Boys’ star in 1987. By Eric Ditzian Corey Haim in 1987 Photo: MTV News From Corey Haim’s teenage years as a Hollywood heartthrob to his attempts at a comeback, MTV News has followed the actor’s career and sat down for several on-cameras interview with him. After Haim’s death Wednesday morning from an apparent drug overdose, we went back into our archives to pull out some compelling moments over the last two decades. In 1987, fresh off the success of “Lucas,” in which he played a painfully awkward teen who decides to join the football team to impress a cheerleader he’s fallen for, Haim sat down with MTV to promote the vampire drama “The Lost Boys.” In the midst of a wide-ranging discussion alongside co-star Jason Patric, Haim talked about the evolution of his career. ” ‘Lucas,’ everybody was like, ‘Aw, he’s so cute. He’s such a little nerdy kind of guy,” he said. “With ‘Silver Bullet’ I was in a [wheel]chair. In ‘A Time to Live,” I had muscular dystrophy. I portrayed a kid who was dying. His mom was freaking out. This is pretty much my first chance to say, ‘Hey, he’s a dude. Gnarly!’ ” The next year, we caught up with Haim again, this time quite unexpectedly during an interview with his friend and frequent co-star Corey Feldman . The two threw their arms around each other, messed around and took nothing too seriously — even a discussion of Feldman’s legal battle to become emancipated from his parents. “We’re best friends and we have the same name, so it’s very easy,” Feldman said. “And the same style of dressing!” Haim added. The duo would go on to star in films like, “Dream a Little Dream,” “License to Drive” and “Blown Away.” But when we caught up with Haim almost two decades later, while he promoted his comeback reality series with Feldman called “The Two Coreys,” we encountered quite a different person. He’d battled substance abuse for years and had checked into treatment centers too many times to count, but maintained he’d finally gotten sober. “Everyone asks me, ‘Would you change anything, Corey Haim , from your past because of the drugs?’ ” he told us. “No, except maybe the emotional hurt I put on my family and friends. But no, I wouldn’t change anything.” Just a few years later, though, Haim died at the age of 38. “This is a tragic loss of a wonderful, beautiful, tormented soul, who will always be my brother, family, and best friend,” Feldman said in a statement released Wednesday. Corey Feldman Tells Larry King About Corey Haim’s Final Days

Feldman also reveals the pair’s plans to make two ‘License to Drive’ sequels on ‘Larry King Live.’ By Josh Wigler Corey Feldman on “Larry King Live” Wednesday Photo: CNN Actor Corey Feldman, 38, appeared Wednesday night (March 10) on CNN’s “Larry King Live” to discuss the death of his best friend and colleague Corey Haim , 38. Feldman, who co-starred with Haim in movies such as “The Lost Boys,” “License to Drive” and “Dream a Little Dream,” said he was “in shock” over the news of Haim’s passing and that he had seen the late actor as recently as “three or four days ago.” “He was fine,” Feldman said when asked about Haim’s appearance at the time of their last meeting. “He was actually giving me some advice about something I was very upset about. He was being very positive.” According to Feldman, reports that Haim died of a drug overdose are premature, citing other possible factors including kidney and heart failure, an inadvertent lethal mixture of prescribed drugs, or simply his body shutting down after years of drug abuse. “Until the coroner’s report comes out and until we get specific evidence and until we know exactly what the toxicology report says, nobody knows [how Haim died], and nobody is going to know,” Feldman said. “We are aware of the fact that Corey Haim has a long and detailed drug history and battled addiction for many, many years. I know it better than anybody, because I’ve been the guy stuffing charcoal down his throat when he was [overdosing]. I’ve been the guy trying to make him stand up or say a complete sentence. I’ve been through it with him many, many times, and it’s happened very badly and very intensely through the years.” While Feldman said he appreciated the outpouring of condolences from Haim’s many mourning fans, he was disappointed that the late actor’s support didn’t reveal itself sooner. “At the end of the day, where were all of these people the last 10 or 15 years of Corey’s life?” Feldman asked. “Where were all of these people to reach a hand out to him and say, ‘You’re a legend. You’re an amazingly talented and wonderful person.’ ” Feldman said mean-spirited remarks from tabloid magazines and Web sites such as TMZ were quite troubling not just for Haim, but also for himself. In light of Haim’s death, Feldman suggested that society needs “to grow up and think about every time we laugh at somebody in the tabloids, every time we poke a finger at somebody and say, ‘They’re a joke’ or ‘They’re fat’ or ‘They’re a drug addict’ or ‘They’re washed up’ or ‘They’re a loser,’ we need to look at ourselves and say, ‘Who am I?’ ” Haim had filmed several movies prior to his death, Feldman said, including a celebrated role in “American Sunset.” Feldman also revealed that before Haim’s death, the longtime collaborators “were negotiating a deal to do [their] first movie together in nine years.” Haim was apparently in the process of pitching a sequel to “License to Drive” called “License to Fly,” which would have been followed up with a third installment called “License to Dive.” There are currently no funeral plans for the late actor, Feldman said, though he hopes to arrange a memorial service where members of Hollywood would pay their respects to the actor, citing “Lucas” and other films as reasons to fondly remember Haim’s contributions to the industry. “Hopefully, he’s going to be remembered as a beautiful, funny, enigmatic character who brought nothing but life and light and entertainment and art to all of our lives,” Feldman said.
