Slash Promises New Velvet Revolver Will Be ‘A Lot Heavier’

‘When we started working with Scott, we started to lighten things up,’ the guitarist says of former frontman Scott Weiland. By Kyle Anderson Slash Photo: MTV News Other than taking a short break to play some riffs for Rihanna , top-hatted guitarist Slash spent the better part of last year working on his solo album, which many fans took as further proof that Velvet Revolver was no more. The supergroup — made up of Slash, fellow Guns N’ Roses alums Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, Wasted Youth guitarist Dave Kushner and Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland — produced a pair of well-received albums. Then Weiland went back to STP, leaving Velvet Revolver without a frontman. Still, despite the group having been mostly quiet for the last two years, Slash says they fully intend to push forward — and the group even has some songs ready to go. “As soon as we got off the road from the last tour and parted ways with Scott, we got together and wrote half a dozen really great, sort of heavy metal pieces of music,” Slash told MTV News. “It’s a lot heavier than what Velvet Revolver has put out, so I’m dying to put out the quintessential Velvet Revolver record.” Slash said the new material better matches the group’s original intentions. “When Duff and Matt and I first got together, we wrote a ton of material that never saw the light of day, and that was all very heavy,” Slash explained. “It’s definitely our natural way of doing things. But when we started working with Scott, we started to lighten things up a lot, and we progressively got lighter. As much as I love the two records we did do, one of the things that was progressively more and more frustrating was the direction the band took.” Slash’s self-titled solo effort, released in April, features an eclectic mix of guest appearances, from Fergie to Iggy Pop to Kid Rock to former Alter Bridge singer Myles Kennedy , who’s currently fronting the guitarist’s touring band. And according to Slash, he wasn’t the only Velvet Revolver bandmember with more than one iron in the fire. “I’ve been doing this record, and there’s a tour and Duff’s been playing with Jane’s Addiction, so everybody has been pretty busy,” Slash said. “But at some point early next year, we’re going to reconvene and take a good serious look at everything that we’ve got.” In the meantime, Velvet Revolver remain a band without a singer — but not for lack of trying. “This next record will be us doing what we want to do without making any concessions to anybody,” Slash declared. “Which is why it’s taking so long to find a singer, because we want to find the guy who can front that band and not something we have to conform to.” Who should be the new Velvet Revolver singer? Slash Promises Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver, Solo Songs On Tour

‘I’m really excited, because we’ve got a great backing band and a great frontman,’ Slash says of Myles Kennedy. By Kyle Anderson Slash Photo: MTV News Considering how long he has been around and the sort of people he has hung out with and places he has been, you would think there wouldn’t be a whole lot that would throw off Slash. But when it came time to plan a tour in support of his recently released self-titled solo album, he was a little perplexed. After all, he couldn’t recruit all of the top-shelf talent who provided vocals on Slash (including Kid Rock, Ozzy Osbourne, Fergie, Chris Cornell, Adam Levine and Dave Grohl). Luckily, he took a chance that paid off. “I auditioned a lot of singers for Velvet Revolver and a lot for this new tour,” Slash told MTV News of the jaunt, which kicks off Friday night (May 21) in Walker, Minnesota. “I had one song left on the album and didn’t have a singer for it, so I called Myles Kennedy out of the blue. He sent back this amazing vocal for a song called ‘Starlight.’ ” Kennedy, who was previously the singer for the Creed fallout band Alter Bridge, immediately clicked with the veteran guitarist. Naturally, that led to the birth of their touring together. “I don’t know if I coerced him into doing the tour or if he really wanted to do it, but he was onboard,” Slash joked. “I’m really excited, because we’ve got a great backing band and a great frontman.” Though he stuck mostly to a bellowing baritone with Alter Bridge, Kennedy’s singing with Slash is “much bluesier,” according to the guitarist. That’s good, because he’ll have to tackle a wide variety of styles. “It’s a pretty killer set list,” said Slash, who has done time in a number of different bands, all of which will be represented on the tour. “We do five to six songs off the new record. And we do a handful of Guns N’ Roses songs, a lot of which I haven’t played since ’93. And we do a few Velvet Revolver songs and a couple of Snakepit songs. It’s a really energetic and vibrant set.” Will you check out Slash’s new tour? Let us know in the comments!

Carmen Electra’s Old School Hotness

I haven’t seen Carmen Electra in quite some time, I’ve missed her, here she is flashing her old school curves on the cover of Garage magazine. I’m guessing that none of you have ever heard of Garage magazine either, but that’s alright because we’re here to stare at Carmen’s boobs not read some silly magazine. I’m glad to see that she’s returning to her roots, posing on top of sports cars and pool tables, I think I have a calendar of her dong this exact thing from like fifteen years ago. She’s come full circle. Enjoy.

Black Eyed Peas’ ‘I Gotta Feeling’ Breaks Digital Sales Record

BEP song surpasses Flo Rida’s ‘Low’ as best-selling digital song of all time, according to Billboard. By Gil Kaufman The Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am, Fergie and Taboo Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images You might be able to slow the Black Eyed Peas down, but you can’t stop them. The future-funk foursome notched another major career milestone this week when their hit “I Gotta Feeling” surpassed Flo Rida’s “Low” as the best-selling digital song of all time. According to Billboard , Nielsen SoundScan reports that the celebratory tune has sold 5,561,000 downloads, which puts it ahead of the 5,536,00 sold by “Low.” SoundScan started tracking digital song sales in July 2003. The feat is not surprising, considering that “Feeling” spent 14 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts last year. Flo Rida had held the title since March 2008, when it beat another inescapable tune, Soulja Boy Tell’em’s 2007 hit, “Crank That.” “Feeling” takes its place in the top 5 best-selling digital downloads of all time, along with another Peas tune, the equally ubiquitous 2009 track “Boom Boom Pow,” which is in the #4 slot at 5,298,000. Moving back to #3 on the tally is Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” (5,364,000), followed by another Gaga smash, “Poker Face” at #5 (5,131,000). In keeping with their world-reigning status, the Peas have signed up alongside Shakira, Alicia Keys and John Legend to help kick off the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament . They will perform at the launch on June 10 at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto/Johannesburg, South Africa. Also on the bill are Malian duo Amadou & Mariam, Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo and South African rockers BLK JKS. The opening celebration will take place on the eve of the first match in what is one of the most widely viewed sporting events on the planet. Related Artists Black Eyed Peas

Fergie Needs To Get Her Act Together

I know that Fergie has had it kinda rough in her life, what with being addicted to meth and being an old woman, but she seriously has to get her act together. I’m not complaining about her body, it’s awesome, that would be like complaining about beer being too delicious, but that head needs to go. Too bad we couldn’t just pop them off like Lego men and replace them with better ones. I know I’d love to replace my head with that of a Lego spaceman. So handsome.

Fergie Is ‘Perfect’ in ‘Gettin’ Over You’ Video, David Guetta Says

‘This is going to be my best video ever’, DJ/producer tells MTV News of new collabo, also featuring Will.I.Am and LMFAO. By Akshay Bhansali, with reporting by Damian Vaca David Guetta Photo: MTV News The French house-music DJ/producer who produced last summer’s Black Eyed Peas hit “I Gotta Feeling” is planning a repeat chart assault. David Guetta just shot the video for his “Gettin’ Over You,” a song he’s convinced will be the summer anthem of 2010. “I have no words. This is going to be my best video, I’m sure,” Guetta told MTV News when we caught up with him at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, fresh off the video shoot. The seemingly endless obsession with “I Gotta Feeling” hasn’t gone unnoticed by Guetta, who may be following a formula for success by reuniting with some of the song’s key players. (The massive hit from the Peas’ album The E.N.D. spent 14 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 last year and remains a club staple.) “Gettin’ Over You” features Will.I.Am, Fergie and LMFAO. It’s only fitting, then, that the new clip includes a nod to the first collaboration that helped make Guetta a crossover star. “The video is the story of what happened to me when I came to produce ‘I Gotta Feeling’ for the Black Eyed Peas,” Guetta said. “It was my first time in that studio called Record Plant. I was so impressed, and we started to work with Will.I.Am and more and more artists were coming to say, ‘Hello,’ and were like, ‘Oh, this music is different.’ And they were staying. Girls were starting to dance on the couch. “So the inspiration for my video is really that. We’re in recording sessions — me, Fergie, LMFAO, [singer] Chris Willis — and then more and more people are partying in the studio. We party in the streets. Partying in the area … partying in the city.” Oddly enough, Guetta’s energetic onstage demeanor is in direct contrast to his comfort level with the acting required for a music video. “I’m so bad. I can only be myself,” he laughed. “I’m such a bad actor, it’s terrible. If you tell me, ‘Do what you usually do,’ it’s kind of OK. So I’m producing that record, that’s what I’m doing in the video.” But the dance-music phenom could only rave about Fergie’s performance. “I look stupid, you know, totally suck,” Guetta said. “Her, it’s the opposite. They say ‘rolling,’ and she knows exactly what she’s doing, like, the angle, the look, the light. I asked her after we shot, ‘Did you have a monitor? Could you see yourself?’ Because it was so perfect.” What do you think of David collaborating with the Peas again? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists David Guetta Fergie

‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Charity Can’t Save Tim Urban

On ‘Idol Gives Back’ week, it was hard to notice anything but Crystal Bowersox. By Jim Cantiello Tim Urban and Ryan Seacrest on “American Idol” on Wednesday Photo: FOX It was “Idol Gives Back” week on “American Idol,” that time on the show when the judges beg viewers to help solve the world’s problems when in actuality, the interest from Simon Cowell’s savings account alone could buy every human a mosquito net. Or 12. It also meant that the top seven were forced to sing “inspirational songs” (with guest mentor Alicia Keys), a theme almost half of them interpreted as “cheesy soundtrack songs.” Crystal “Not a Quitter” Bowersox solidified her front-runner status by delivering the season’s first official “Holy Crap That Just Happened on Live TV” moment when she burst into tears singing lyrics about “the Lord.” But it wasn’t the Holy Spirit that moved her. She told Seacrest it was PapaSox sitting in the audience that made her lose her cool. Bowersox’s “People Get Ready” was so good that nobody even seemed to care that she sang into a bong-shaped microphone stand. Oh, and the other remaining six contestants sang too, I guess. Wednesday was the official two hour (and 9,000,000 minute) “Idol Gives Back” telethon, so you know what that means: The contestants wore virginal white, Annie Lennox sang the crap out of a song that makes you cry (even if Icelandic ash kept her on another continent), and we got to see a past Idol frolic with smiling African babies. (This year we had the added enjoyment of seeing David Cook’s hairstyle change 15 times in four minutes of television!) Producers pulled the biggest names out of their Rolodex for the admirable occasion, and unfortunately most of those celebs passed. But look! They booked Jonah Hill and George Lopez and Common and the one and only Octomom! But “Idol” is first and foremost a music show (just kidding), so the highlights of the night were obviously the musical guests. Each member of the Black Eyed Peas performed a separate song simultaneously (also of note: Fergie dressed like Wonder Woah-man). Mary J. Blige dramatically took off her sunglasses during an “all-star” “Stairway to Heaven.” Alicia Keys left her voice at home, Carrie Underwood sang about changes (not menopause), and Sir Elton John performed “Your Song” for the millionth time in his career. It was most unfortunate when a demon entered the body of Joss Stone and ruined her performance with Jeff Beck. I hope she gets exorcised soon. Perhaps “Idol” will raise money for that cause next year. In the end, despite David Duchovny, Disney stars, the POTUS, the Posh, Bill and Melinda Gates and the “Idol” judges begging America to be generous, viewers voted off Tim Urban, the shiniest happiest person in the cast. To think that $10 of singing lessons may have extended his “Idol” life. Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘Idol Gives Back’ Gets A Hand From Alicia Keys, Joss Stone, Elton John

Black Eyed Peas and Carrie Underwood also perform during ‘American Idol’ fundraising effort. By Gil Kaufman Alicia Keys (file) Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage Most of Wednesday night’s (April 21) “American Idol” was given over to the all-star fundraising effort “Idol Gives Back,” featuring performances from Alicia Keys, Elton John, Mary J. Blige and others uniting to raise funds for children’s charities in the U.S. and abroad. There was, of course, also work to be done, as another contestant faced elimination at the end of the nearly two-and-a-half-hour special. But the majority of the show was focused on performances at the “Idol” studios in Los Angeles, as well as a second location at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, where Queen Latifah hosted in front of a rowdy crowd hyped for Carrie Underwood, the Black Eyed Peas and other special guests. The evening opened with President Obama and the first lady, Michelle Obama, delivering a pre-taped message from the White House. ” ‘American Idol’ has always been about changing lives, on the stage and around the world,” the president said. “That’s why Michelle and I want to take a moment to thank everyone watching tonight for your continued generosity as part of ‘Idol Gives Back.’ ” The top 12, all wearing crisp white outfits, were reunited for one last group number, the 1986 Freiheit song “Keeping the Dream Alive,” followed by the Black Eyed Peas, who beamed in for their tune “Rock That Body” on a stage shrouded in fog and crisscrossing lasers. As a half-dozen futuristic robot-girl warriors flashed their ray guns at the crowd, Fergie worked the stage in a metallic snakeskin body suit and knee-high matching boots for the uptempo dance tune. This week’s mentor, Alicia Keys, sang her sultry new ballad “Un-Thinkable” while wearing a silky black pantsuit, and then sat down at the piano for a forceful run through the sequel to her hit duet with Jay-Z, “Empire State of Mind (Pt. II) Broken Down.” Former “Idol” winner and country superstar Carrie Underwood dropped by to sing her inspirational ballad about trying to make a difference in the world, “Change.” Though former Eurythmics singer Annie Lennox was scheduled to perform, she was grounded by the Icelandic volcano, but still made an appearance in a touching segment about how the right drugs helped save the life of a desperately ill 7-year-old girl with pneumonia and AIDS. She later appeared in a satellite segment singing her hopeful tribute to children in need, “Universal Child,” a new song that was available for download on iTunes after the show. English guitar icon Jeff Beck was joined by Joss Stone and the Jubilation choir for a slinky ramble through “I Put a Spell on You,” which featured plenty of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s legendary whammy-bar pyrotechnics. Mary J. Blige also lent a hand, hooking up with Orianthi, Travis Barker, Steve Vai and “Idol” judge Randy Jackson to perform Led Zeppelin’s rock classic “Stairway to Heaven.” Wearing dark shades, black leather pants and a black leotard with mirrored shoulder pads, Blige brought some soul power to the rock anthem, with Barker bashing out the rumbling rhythm and Vai and Orianthi trading off riffs as the tune built to a titanic peak. The night’s final performance came from Elton John, who encouraged viewers to get educated about HIV/AIDS and to get tested for the disease before singing his ageless piano ballad “Your Song.” Among the stars lending a hand through video segments chronicling childhood poverty and hunger were Jennifer Garner, former guest judge Victoria Beckham, Captain “Sully” Sullenberger, Jonah Hill, Russell Brand, George Lopez, David Duchovny, Chris Rock, Josh Groban, Morgan Freeman, Slash, Jim Carrey, Wanda Sykes and Ben Affleck. Garner visited an Appalachian town near hear hometown in Charleston, West Virginia, where 45 percent of children are growing up in poverty. She met a family of six that lives in a cramped two-room trailer with no heat and is getting some educational help from Save the Children, one of the night’s beneficiaries. Freeman and Randy Jackson traveled to Mississippi and watched as Save the Children helped spread literacy to help rural children get out of poverty. DeGeneres was in Monrovia, California, with David Arquette to see the efforts of Feeding America, which provides food to families in need, while former “Idol” winner David Cook went to Ethiopia on behalf of the U.N. Foundation to see their work trying to help save young girls from servitude. After taking a year off in 2009 due to the financial crisis, Wednesday night’s show was the third edition of “Idol Gives Back,” and near the end of the show, Simon Cowell announced that $15 million has already been raised.
