Shia LaBeouf Sees ‘Positives And Negatives’ To ‘Transformers’ Re-Casting

Megan Fox replacement Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is a ‘new set of eyes,’ actor says. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Shia LaBeouf Photo: MTV News “Strange” is how Megan Fox describes the way she’ll probably be feeling when she hunkers down into her seat to take in Shia LaBeouf and “Transformers 3” next summer. The 24-year-old actress was ousted from the production in a stunning turn of events in May, only to be replaced by Victoria’s Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley . And while Fox told MTV News that she “might be a little jealous when I see somebody kissing my Shia,” LaBeouf acknowledged that there are both upsides and downsides to smooching with another actress while alien robots battle around them. “I think there’s positives and negatives to her not being [in the movie],” said LaBeouf, who was at the Toronto Film Festival to promote “Wall Street 2.” “It’s awesome that we get the discovery again. I think when everybody’s vetted and everybody’s been through these wars, then that discovery of the first film is nonexistent. It’s kind of beautiful in that we get a new set of eyes, a fresh set of eyes for the audience to vibe with. So you get the discovery again, which is something that wouldn’t happen if Megan came back.” Yet he still counts Fox as a good friend, and praised her turns in the first two “Transformers” flicks. As for Huntington-Whiteley , who will make her acting debut in the new film, LaBeouf said she’s “doing great,” though there’s little he could do to prepare her for the experience of working with the famously fiery director, Michael Bay. “You can only do so much,” he laughed. “Fight or flight. A tap on the back and a ‘Good luck!’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers 3.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Waiting For Superman’ Can Bring ‘Real Change,’ Stars Say At Premiere

‘A lot of people drop off their kids and hope for the best when they go to school,’ Cheryl Hines tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Cheryl Hines at the “Waiting for Superman” premiere Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — It’s already taken the Sundance Film Festival by storm — both with critics and audiences — creating buzz from within the U.S. Department of Education, and it has found major-league celeb support from the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates. So what more can “Waiting for Superman,” Davis Guggenheim’s glaring examination of our nation’s school system do? MTV News hit up the film’s L.A. premiere Monday to find out. “The movie has a chance to help change our schools,” Guggenheim said. “We really need to do it. I think our schools are in big trouble — not just in schools ‘over there’; schools everywhere are in trouble. It’s a great film, because it brings people together to see it, and it also shows people that it’s possible to give every kid in America a great education. That’s what’s so exciting: It brings people together around this issue [to] make real change.” “Superman” supporter L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa agreed, equating the film’s impact on education to that of Guggenheim’s last film, “An Inconvenient Truth.” “This movie has got to be a catalyst for real change. It’s got to do for education what ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ did for climate change and the struggle to educate people about global warming,” Villaraigosa said. “This is the pre-eminent challenge facing America. It is the civil-rights issue of our time. When you look at the kids in urban schools, the level with which they’re dropping out and the abysmal success rate of our urban public schools.” “I think this film and our show ‘School Pride’ will be eye-opening for a lot of people in this country,” actress and “School Pride” host/ executive producer Cheryl Hines said. “I think a lot of people have no idea how bad it is, and I think a lot of people drop off their kids and hope for the best when they go to school. Now is the time to really show people what is happening and inspire them to do something about it.” For more information about the film and how to help schools within your cities and neighborhoods, visit WaitingForSuperman.com . Kate Winslet, 34, separated from husband Sam Mendes in March after nearly seven years or marriage. They kept quiet about their romance at first, but now Kate Winslet and Louis Dowler appear to be comfortable in the public eye. The couple attended the 58th annual San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain on Monday in dramatic style: Winslet in an off-the-shoulder, very short black dress, and Dowler in a black suit with a barely buttoned white shirt. Five months later, the Oscar winner

Is ‘The Town’ Oscar-Bound After Box-Office Win?

Brisk ticket sales, critical buzz make Ben Affleck’s Boston drama an Oscar hopeful. By Eric Ditzian Slaine, Ben Affleck, Jeremy Renner and Owen Burke in “The Town” Photo: Warner Bros. “The Town” floated out of the Venice Film Festival on a cloud of Oscar buzz, and heading into the weekend, most box-office prognosticators expected Ben Affleck’s drama to win the #1 spot. But who could have predicted that “The Town” would net $23.5 million , a September record for Warner Bros.? Now there’s no doubting that the guy who once starred in “Gigli” and “Jersey Girl” has a serious Oscar hopeful on his hands. “Typically September releases turn out to be Oscar frauds,” said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “Not so with ‘The Town,’ as it has the reviews and b.o. to not only talk the talk, but walk the walk. Being #1 at the box office always helps the cause of any film, as it garners massive amounts of media attention.” Affleck’s Boston bank-robber tale is not only a contender for one of the 10 Best Picture nominations, but could land a nod in an acting category as well. “Either Jon Hamm or Jeremy Renner could easily end up in the Supporting Actor category,” said BoxOffice.com editor Phil Contrino, citing the film’s robust ticket sales. Another Boston-centric crime drama, “The Departed,” opened to similar numbers and critical acclaim in 2006. The Martin Scorsese film eventually nabbed five Oscar nominations, including Mark Wahlberg’s nod for Supporting Actor, and won four of them (including Best Picture and Best Director). Few would argue that Affleck’s movie will mirror the awards-season success of Scorsese’s, but as Contrino notes, “The Academy has a history of rewarding crime flicks that catch on in a major way and ultimately transcend their genre.” Oscar chances aside, what’s most remarkable about “The Town” is the fact that it made so much money with stars not nearly as high-profile as the ones in “Departed.” “Affleck, Renner and Hamm are certainly no [Leonardo] DiCaprio, [Jack] Nicholson, and [Matt] Damon,” Bock said. “That’s why the debut of ‘The Town’ is all the more impressive. Affleck achieved this opening on concept, not star power, which is becoming increasingly more potent in Hollywood of late.” Much credit is due to Warners’ marketing machine, which went to great lengths in TV ads to position “The Town” as more genre thriller than critical darling. “The ads punched up the proceedings by making the picture look (not just sound) like ‘The Departed’ and by using the Eminem song ‘Not Afraid,’ ” noted Brandon Gray of Box Office Mojo . Box-office success, of course, is not always a requirement for Oscar love. Just look at “The Hurt Locker,” which won Best Picture over “Avatar” this year despite an anemic box-office showing. When the new nominations arrive early next year, we should expect a similar grouping of “Hurt Locker”-style small fare and “Avatar”-esque blockbusters. “With 10 nominations for Best Picture, more than ever there are opportunities for smaller films and major blockbusters to be in the mix. One of those films is ‘Inception,’ which is a shoo-in for a Best Picture [nod],” Bock said. “This year we will see a mix of both types of films, but odds are, we won’t have a smaller film win the award two years in a row, since it’s never happened before ‘The Hurt Locker.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Town.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Megan Fox Clarifies Mickey Rourke Tattoo Comments

‘It’s not necessarily an homage to him,’ she says of the ink that reminds her of ‘Passion Play’ co-star. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Megan Fox Photo: MTV News Anyone familiar with the ever-changing Internet news cycle should know to tread carefully where celebrity stories are concerned, particularly those that involve engaged actresses falling in love with co-stars and expressing that emotion via tattoos. Case in point, a chat we had with Megan Fox back in June, wherein the easy-on-the-eyes actress revealed to MTV News that she feels a special bond with her “Passion Play” co-star Mickey Rourke — so much so that she got inked in his honor . “I actually got a tattoo that is sort of in honor of him,” she told us at the time. “It’s on my ribs. I don’t know if it’s been photographed yet, but it’ll come out eventually, I’m sure. I just love him very much and think he’s very special.” Incredibly enough, that little blurb was taken out of context by several outlets of the tabloid variety. So when we ran into Fox again recently, she helped clarify the rumor-gone-wild. “Maybe it was your fault,” Fox said at the Toronto International Film Festival, where she was promoting “Passion Play.” “But it turned into, even though I was in love with [husband] Brian [Austin Green] , it turned into that I was secretly in love with Mickey Rourke and got a tattoo to release the angst,” she said. “It was not about that. I have a tattoo that is a Nietzsche quote that sort of basically is about marching to the beat of your own drummer and not being afraid to do that. I was saying that it reminds me of Mickey, of course, because he clearly is not marching to anyone else’s drummer, drumbeat, and that’s all. It’s not necessarily an homage to him.” And there you have it, Megan Fox fans: ink explained. Keanu Reeves Is ‘Trying’ To Make ‘Bill And Ted’ Sequel

‘To me, I’d love to play the role. I’d love to work with Alex and Chris and Ed again,’ Reeves says. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Keanu Reeves Photo: MTV News It was on the glittering red carpet at the Oscars in March that Keanu Reeves tossed us a most excellent bit of semi-news about a potential new “Bill and Ted” sequel . “I’m trying, I’m trying,” he said. Was he serious? Just joking in the midst of the overly serious awards season circus? We honestly weren’t sure. So when we got a chance to chat with Reeves again — this time at the Toronto Film Festival, where he was promoting “Henry’s Crime” — we had to probe further. Is a third “Bill and Ted” flick really in the works? Might Reeves reunite with co-star Alex Winter and writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon? Perhaps. And Reeves is positively giddy about the possibility that it actually could happen. “We’re trying. Alex and I are still friends and we’re talking, and we’re talking to Chris and Ed,” Reeves said. “They’re going to try and see if they can write something. To me, I’d love to play the role. I’d love to work with Alex and Chris and Ed again.” “We’ll see what they do. If it’s a film that can stand up on its own … and I’m meeting people now, they’ve shown the film to their kids,” he added. “We just seek to entertain, and if that could be something that could be worthwhile, on its own …” Whether or not Matheson and Solomon hit on an idea that is worthwhile, of course, is only the first of many questions surrounding the chance that another “Bill and Ted” becomes a reality. But it’s worth noting, as well, how darn enthusiastic Reeves is about the project. During our chat, he popped off joke after joke about “Bill and Ted,” mixing his humor with genuine hope (“That would be amazing!” he declared at one point). He veered from one wacky pitch to the next — everything from a 3-D black-and-white sequel to a multi-director feature involving Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and Werner Herzog. Will a third “Bill and Ted” happen? Who knows? But it sure is fun to hear Reeves launch into an impression of Herzog describing the project. “I was just pushed by the idea of this innocence being confronted by the nihilism of the world,” he joked. “And I thought that these two clowns could push our perspective of reality and truth to the forefront of meaning and knowledge.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
