Score: The Hockey Musical Opens TIFF With Jaw-Dropping, Head-Scratching Slap Shot

Considering the dull thud with which last year’s opening-night film Creation landed here, the Toronto Film Festival decided to go more traditional with tonight’s fest opener. And while Score: A Hockey Musical is quite possibly the most distinctly Canadian product I’ve seen since, well, ever , there is no denying that this one also throws tradition under the Zamboni. It’s more like a hockey opera — and yes, that really is Theo Fleury doing his own singing.

VMA Winners David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Others Became High-Profile Directors

Jonze went from directing Weezer’s “Buddy Holly” video to an Oscar nomination for “Being John Malkovich.” By Eric Ditzian David Fincher Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images Somewhere between directing Will Smith and then Robert Pattinson on the big screen, Francis Lawrence took some time away from Hollywood to helm Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” music video. Before Dave Meyers stepped into Pink’s “Funhouse” video, he led Sophia Bush through the bloody terror of “The Hitcher.” There’s long been a connection between feature-length movies and music videos, and Lawrence and Meyers — both of whom are nominated for Best Direction at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards — are just two of the folks who have worked in both mediums. Perhaps in the future, we might see Hype Williams, another of this year’s nominees, traveling from Jay-Z’s New York-centric “Empire State of Mind” to Tinseltown. Before the show goes live on Sunday, September 12, and we see which helmer triumphs, let’s take a look back at some of the most successful Hollywood directors who have won Best Direction at the MTV Video Music Awards. David Fincher Almost two decades before Fincher nabbed an Oscar nod for directing “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” he won the VMA directing award for Madonna’s “Express Yourself.” The next year he won again — this time for Madge’s “Vogue” — becoming the only director in MTV history to win Best Direction two years in a row. After collaborating with the Queen of Pop, Fincher went on to make his feature-film debut with “Alien 3” and then establish his own dark identity with the Brad Pitt-starring “Se7en.” His “Social Network,” a film about the founding of Facebook, is one of the fall’s most anticipated releases. Spike Jonze “Buddy Holly” begat “John Malkovich.” Jonze won his first Best Direction VMA for Weezer’s iconic “Happy Days”-inspired “Buddy Holly” video in 1995, then made his feature debut a few years later with the trippy “Being John Malkovich,” for which he received an Oscar nomination. Jonze has gone on to direct “Adaptation” and “Where the Wild Things Are,” which grossed over $100 million last year. Marc Webb Webb is the man whose job it is to rescue Spider-Man . Following the collapse of the Tobey Maguire-starring franchise earlier this year, Sony turned to Webb to reboot the boy wonder series. Last year, Green Day turned to the director to helm “21 Guns,” a somber take on their hard-charging tune. His feature debut, “(500) Days of Summer,” was nominated for two Golden Globes, including a Best Actor nod for Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Mark Romanek Romanek has directed videos for everyone from David Bowie to Janet Jackson, earning himself MTV’s Video Vanguard Award in 1997. Then in 2004, thanks to Jay-Z’s “99 Problems,” Romanek won his first Best Direction VMA. By then he’d already directed Robin Williams in the thriller “One Hour Photo.” His latest, “Never Let Me Go,” an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s creepily elegant novel, starring Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan, premiered at the Telluride Film Festival last week. Jake Scott The images of sullen drivers stuck in an endless traffic jam set to the mournful sounds of R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts” are among the most indelible of ’90s-era music videos. Scott is the guy behind that vid, for which he won Best Direction. He’s also the guy behind Kristen Stewart’s upcoming drama “Welcome to the Rileys,” a troubling take on a runaway-turned-New Orleans stripper. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris There hardly seems to be a connection between the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 3-D gaming-style video for “Californication” and the Steve Carell-starring dark comedy “Little Miss Sunshine” … except that Dayton and Faris directed them both. The video won them Best Direction in 2000 and the movie was honored with four Oscar nominations in 2007, winning Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Alan Arkin. Samuel Bayer Bayer will forever be part of music history for directing Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video. But he didn’t win his first Best Direction VMA until 2005, when he helmed Green Day’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” He won his second direction Moonman two year later, thanks to Justin Timberlake and “What Goes Around.” This past spring, he resurrected the “Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise, guiding the horror flick to an impressive $32.9 million opening. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Angelina Jolie’s ‘Gravity’ Role Reportedly Offered To Natalie Portman

Jolie dropped out of the sci-fi drama last week. By Adam Rosenberg Natalie Portman Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” premiered at the Venice Film Festival last week, and critics are still buzzing over the ballet-centric thriller and star Natalie Portman’s standout performance. Also in the news last week was Angelina Jolie’s departure from Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi drama “Gravity,” in which she was set to star alongside Robert Downey Jr. With the role vacated, a long list of potential replacements surfaced, including “Swan” star Portman. Now it seems that Portman may be the top choice to step in for Jolie. The young star received a formal offer from Warner Bros., according to The Hollywood Reporter . The next step is for her to read the script and make a decision. “Gravity” is an “$80 million [budgeted] 3D survival story,” which Cuaron will direct. The male and female leads play astronauts who are stranded after a disaster leaves their space station inoperable. Downey’s role is a small one in comparison to the one Portman is now up for — the story primarily revolves around her character’s desire to get back to Earth, where her daughter is waiting. Portman already has a 2011 jam-packed with work. She’ll be promoting three features — medieval stoner comedy “Your Highness,” romantic comedy “No Strings” and Marvel superhero summer blockbuster “Thor” — as well as continuing development on the adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,” which David O. Russell is writing/directing and Portman will produce/star in. THR also reports that Terence Malick is after the young actress for a role in a “Jerry Lee Lewis-related project” that he is developing with Brad Pitt, and that Tom Stoppard is seeking her out for yet another project. Black Swan’s Venice Debut: Is This The Psycho Ballerina Movie We’ve Been Waiting For?

On its face, Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan would seem to have something for everybody: lesbian kisses (for the masses), art house appeal (for the film snobs), and a supporting part for Winona Ryder (for Winona Ryder’s agent). So how is the film being received after its Venice Film Festival debut?

Now the Bedbugs Are Threatening the Toronto Film Festival

Because New York moviegoers shouldn’t have to endure this ordeal alone, organizers at the Toronto International Film Festival have confirmed they are fighting bedbugs at the Scotiabank Theater — the primary venue for press and industry attendees from around the world . “Before bedbugs becomes today’s meme: we’re on it, we’re talking to Cineplex & are planning for an itch-free #TIFF10,” tweeted TIFF co-director Cameron Bailey. Mm-hmm. Sorry, Europe! Good luck, Asia and Latin America! Bring your duct tape and bug spray, Los Angeles! We’re all blood brothers now. [ THR ]

First Social Network Review is a Rave

Scott Foundas has the first review of David Fincher’s Social Network , and not surprisingly (considering Foundas is on the New York Film Festival programming committee that made the film its opening-night selection), it’s a big, huge rave. ” The Social Network is splendid entertainment from a master storyteller, packed with energetic incident and surprising performances It is a movie of people typing in front of computer screens and talking in rooms that is as suspenseful as any more obvious thriller. But this is also social commentary so perceptive that it may be regarded by future generations the way we now look to Gatsby for its acute distillation of Jazz Age decadence.” That “bang” you just heard was the pistol officially starting the Oscar race. David Bowie Denies Lady Gaga Collaboration

Rock legend’s official site calls document claiming that Bowie and Gaga would work together a ‘hoax.’ By Gil Kaufman David Bowie Photo: Virgin Lady Gaga has often spoken about her love for chameleonic rock icon David Bowie and his gender-bending, glitter-splashed style. Last week, when rumors emerged on a Gaga fansite that the Thin White Duke would be working on Gaga’s upcoming album, fans of both artists were understandably intrigued, excited and a bit skeptical. But Bowie’s official website has denied rumors that he would lend his legendary croon to a song reportedly titled “Vinyl.” The statement, written by the site’s news editor, read in part: “When this tall story first surfaced a few days ago it was denied as a hoax in an update to the same article, and we thought that would be the end of it. I guess some folk see what they want to see though.” The scanned document that popped up last Thursday, which bears the hoax-y title “confirmation of recorded music,” also lists Gaga collaborator RedOne as one of the album’s producers and engineers. Also named on the fake list are famed R&B producer Teddy Riley and his daughter Taja, as well as former Gaga collaborator Fernando Garibay (Pussycat Dolls, Britney Spears). Song titles cited include “Hooker on a Church Corner” and “Scream Loud.” “The rumor that David Bowie has been working with Lady Gaga seems to have taken off,” continued the statement on Bowie’s site. “The hoax was started by some bright spark or other with the above forgery … However, in a nutshell, the suggestion that David Bowie is producing and participating in the production of Lady Gaga’s next album is untrue and a hoax.” Gaga has kept a tight lid on the details about her second full-length studio effort. In an interview with i-D , she said, “The new album is my absolute greatest work I’ve ever done, and I’m so excited about it … The message, the melodies, the direction, the meaning, what it will mean to my fans and what it will mean to me in my own life — it’s utter liberation. I’m on the quest to create the anthem for my generation for the next decade, so that’s what I’ve done.” Though she’s had a close, hit-heavy relationship with RedOne, Gaga promised that she’s updating her sound on the still-untitled album with a slate of new producers who she’s declined to identify. “I will never tell because as soon as I tell, everyone starts working with them,” she said of her new album’s production team. “So all I can say is that nobody knows who they are. They’re all new.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists David Bowie Lady Gaga

Method Man Also Hit With Debris At Gathering Of The Juggalos

Following earlier attack on Tila Tequila, rapper was cut on the face by a beer can thrown by an audience member. By Gil Kaufman Method Man Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ WireImage The garbage wasn’t just flying during Tila Tequila’s set at last weekend’s Gathering of the Juggalos. According to photos posted on TMZ , Wu-Tang Clan member Method Man also left the stage bloodied during his set with longtime cohort Redman in front of a rowdy crowd of Insane Clown Posse fans. The photo shows Meth with a bloody gash on the left side of his face, which according to an eyewitness, was sustained on Sunday night when someone in the audience tossed what appeared to be a full beer can at the rapper’s noggin. TMZ referred to a video, apparently shot just moments after the incident, in which Redman cursed out the crowd and told his pal, “Your face is cut, go take care of that.” Ever the professional, Meth waved off the stage injury and shouted, “Start the music, we’re continuing the show. Let’s f— these motherf—ers up!” Meth appears to have taken his Gathering gash better than Tequila, who told E! Online that she wants to bankrupt the event’s organizers after she was reportedly injured when fans pelted her with bottles, rocks and human feces. “I’m hoping this will be the last Juggalos gathering that they will ever have,” she said on Monday, reiterating a threat to close down the annual festival that she first made on her Twitter page . Tequila claimed that her lawyers were planning to sue the festival’s promoters after she reportedly required stitches on her face and sustained bruises to her body. Tequila said she was warned by her fans online before the show that the Juggalos were planning to attack her. She also got a heads up from ICP member Violent J, who told TMZ that the duo alerted her to pre-show rumors that she was going to be targeted during her brief Friday night set. “We told her about the rumor and she didn’t care,” J said. “We paid her before the show and assured her that even if things got out of hand, she could keep the money if she had to leave the stage.” Though he said ICP would fight hard against any potential lawsuit, the rapper lamented that the crowd got violent with Tequila. “If you look at these people, or monsters, whatever they are, they looked very angry and violent,” Tequila said. Comedian Tom Green, who tried to stop the rain of garbage on Tequila by doing a dance onstage during her set, told CNN that a huge mob chased the former Playboy model and star of MTV’s “A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila” to her trailer, where she tried to hide out as they rocked the vehicle and smashed its windows. When the tabloid fixture tried to flee in an SUV, the windows of that vehicle were also reportedly smashed. Related Artists Method Man
