Kanye West Lights Up Superdome At Essence Fest

Yeezy performs a bombastic headlining set on Saturday in New Orleans. By Rebecca Thomas Kanye West performs at the 2011 Essence Fest on Saturday Photo: Erika Goldring/Getty Images NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana — Early on in Kanye West ‘s headlining set at the 2011 Essence Music Festival on Saturday Night, the Chicago MC stood on a raised platform suspended high above the cheering crowd. As he spit “Dark Fantasy,” the hook “Can we get much higher?” seemed a particularly apt way to describe not only his literal skyward stance at the New Orleans Superdome , but also what was to come that night. Yeezy was already knee-deep into career-defining classics like “Jesus Walks” “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and “Diamonds are Forever,” when he told the elated NOLA fest he was “just getting started.” Rocking a white blazer, topped by a thick tangle of gold chains, and a pair of jeans and sneakers, the 34-year-old rapper bounded across the stage like a hyperactive teen, but there was no mistaking that West is a megastar, the “college dropout” who has more than made G.O.O.D. on his childhood dreams. As a small army of classical dancers — dressed in a variation of the phoenix costume worn by Selita Ebanks’ bird in West’s short film “Runaway” — flanked him, Kanye launched into a bombastic rendition of “Power”; “Devil in a New Dress” and “Hell of a Life” followed as ‘Ye tucked into singles and cuts from last year’s platinum-plus opus My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Performing to a massive audience that came to its feet (and stayed there all night) to the strains of ‘Ye and Jay-Z’s “H.A.M.,” the Chi-town MC with a Nas flow touched on his recent scandals, explaining that he stopped granting press interviews after taking lashings from media and bloggers. But he wasn’t all rebellious rapper: He danced, sang along and laughed his way through an old-school medley of personally influential music, and the playlist jumped from Al Green to ’90s soul groups like Jodeci and Shai. And West also emphasized that he knew who had held him down when, as he laughed, he “had a little too much too drink” before storming the MTV VMA stage back in 2009. Yeezy repeatedly thanked the predominantly African-American crowd for standing by him before going on to a stirring, church-tinged rendition of “Gold Digger.” The songs felt big and anthemic; the stage and stands, for instance, were bathed in lights and lasers for “All of the Lights” and “Stronger,” respectively. As he bounced back and forth between hits from his discography, including his College Dropout debut and his introspective, Auto-Tuned 808s & Heartbreak, the weight of West’s musical success was apparent. If there is a handbook for how to headline an expansive show, West should write it. Concertgoers appeared awestruck at the sheer spectacle and scale of the show, mouths gaping when they weren’t shouting lyrics back at the energetic MC. For the finale “Act 3” (a title card projected onto oversize screens flashed the show’s three-part progression), a billowing white tent was spread across the stage. In cocoon-like fashion, the dancers re-emerged in black tutus; West clad in his signature red suit. As the rapper knocked out the mournful, tinkling opener of “Runaway” on his MPC machine, the ballerinas circled and Pusha T turned up for his verse. Still, as large and loud as the show felt, Yeezy’s closing was as subtle. After rapping a heartfelt “Hey Mama” on his knees, with a nod to his late mother, Donda West , the star and his band, dancers and DJ took a ballet-company-style bow and walked offstage as the stadium lights went up. Celebrate the Late Sidney Lumet’s Birthday By Remembering His Greatest Onscreen Achievements

Had he not passed away on April 9 , famed director Sidney Lumet would have turned 87 years old on Saturday. The five-time Academy Award-nominee was responsible for some of the most indelible films from the last half-century, including 12 Angry Men , Network , Dog Day Afternoon , The Verdict and Running on Empty , to name just five. Lumet was remembered at the Los Angeles Film Festival this week, and if you didn’t get a chance to participate in that event, Movieline is here to provide a sounding board. In honor of what would have been Lumet’s birthday, celebrate the director’s career ahead.

Shia LaBeouf Likens ‘Transformers 2’ To ‘Apocalypse Now’ Chaos

‘Dark of the Moon,’ however, was the first ‘Transformers’ film to have ‘a fully sussed-out script,’ star tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Shia LaBeouf Photo: MTV News Give Michael Bay and Shia LaBeouf credit for stepping up and admitting their cinematic gaffes. Both guys have owned up to the fact that 2009’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” despite nabbing more than $830 million at the worldwide box office, did not measure up to their popcorn aspirations. “The second one, we had a tough go,” Bay told us in February about shooting the film in the wake of the writers’ strike. “It was a very, very tough thing to make a movie under those circumstances. It affected a lot of Hollywood at that time.” The key issue was the film was rushed into production without all the creative pieces fully in place; filmmakers had a huge budget but not exactly the clearest idea of the story they were trying to tell. In this sense, LaBeouf told MTV News recently in Moscow, the movie became Bay’s “Apocalypse Now,” the notoriously troubled, Francis Ford Coppola-directed Vietnam War film. “[On] the second movie where we had our hiccups, there were good things, but there were more bad things,” LaBeouf explained, going on to reference the documentary about the “Apocalypse” production. “Before I came out here, I watched ‘Hearts of Darkness.’ And in it, you have Francis Ford Coppola saying to camera, ‘I have too much money, I have no script, and I’m going to shoot myself in the head.’ ” LaBeouf went on to make clear he wasn’t comparing his summer tentpole to that classic war film, only “the conundrum,” as he put it, of undertaking a sprawling project under less-than-organized circumstances. “[It was] very similar in terms of Coppola and Mike on set,” he continued. “And the insanity of the second movie.” Production on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” the third film in the franchise, which hits theaters Wednesday, couldn’t have been more different than the second. “This was the first time we’ve had a fully sussed-out script, with a strong through line and the best plot and arc [LaBeouf’s character] Sam has ever had,” the actor said. “And it’s also simple in the places you want it to be and not complicated. I think the second movie you got convoluted, complicated action where you can’t enjoy it. You don’t know whose elbow is what, or whose face is getting impaled. You don’t know who the enemy is, you don’t know who the hero is. You get lost. [Bay] simplified all his action, so that you can thoroughly enjoy it and his simplification of the movie, we benefited greatly from it.” The result, as LaBeouf told us at the MTV Movie Awards, is what he views as the finest installment in the franchise. But that doesn’t mean he’ll be returning for a fourth go-round. Reiterating a sentiment he conveyed to us at the MTV Movie Awards earlier this month, “Dark of the Moon” will be his final “Transformers” movie . “I’ve learned a great deal from Michael, as a person, as an actor. As a person on his sets, you learn a lot,” he said. “And it’s not that I don’t enjoy working with Michael. I love working with Michael. I would do any movie Michael wants to do. I just don’t think there’s anywhere to take it Sam.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . VIDEO: (Delgo + Yogi Bear) x King Kong = The Great Bear

So there’s this animated Danish movie called The Great Bear that has been quietly making the festival rounds. I only today accidentally discovered the trailer, whose accompanying synopsis promises quite the story. But it’s the animation itself that has me wondering what kind of legend The Great Bear has in store for it.

What Drives Ryan Gosling?

What does Ryan Gosling like to do late at night? Drive around the City of Angels, obviously. Apologies to any of you ladies out there hoping we were going in a different direction with that one. Our friends at Reel Movie News attended the premiere of Gosling’s Drive (in theaters Sept. 16) at the Los Angeles Film Festival Friday night. RMN spoke with Ryan and co-star Christina Hendricks on the red carpet about their project, in which a Hollywood stunt driver gets into trouble after becoming part of a heist gone terribly wrong. Mannie Fresh Urges Mystikal To Put Out Free Tracks

‘Your fans miss you,’ producer tells his ‘Uh Oh’ collaborator, in Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ade Mangum Mannie Fresh Photo: MTV News Behind the Beats: Mannie Fresh Fans haven’t heard much from Mystikal since his release from prison in 2010 after serving six years on sexual battery and extortion charges. There was, of course, his feature on Lloyd’s “Set Me Free,” and a leaked song called “Uh Oh,” featuring Jazelle and produced by Mannie Fresh. The slow, seductive “Uh Oh” was proved that despite being locked up, the New Orleans rapper hadn’t lost his touch on the mic. And Fresh and Mystikal clearly have good chemistry. In fact, a 2010 viral clip of the former No Limit MC freestyling while the former Cash Money producer plays beats has racked up over half a million hits on YouTube. MTV News recently caught up with Fresh at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival and talked to the producer about his work with Mystikal. “The amount of hits on that is nuts, because we were just sitting in the car vibing,” Fresh said of the viral video. “I was just going through beats, and he was rapping on it, and I’m trying to convince him [that] I think that would be his mixtape.” As the two continue to work together, Fresh is urging Mystikal to continue to put out free music and worry about selling an album later. Mannie thinks the rapper should build off of all the positive comments that the viral clip received and give the people what they want. “I think we should go through the songs that everybody liked, put that out as free music then do the album,” he said. “I am pushing for that.” Ultimately, Mannie is just looking out for the base that Mystikal has built starting with his 1996 debut album, Mind of Mystikal. “Every song that he picked, I’m like, ”Hey, just put it out there,’ ” Fresh recalled. “Your fans miss you.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
