‘Dancing With The Stars’: Kirstie Alley Gets Assist From John Travolta

Despite the cameo, it was Hines Ward who won over the judges with his rumba. By Kelley L. Carter John Travolta, Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Kirstie Alley on “Dancing With the Stars” Photo: ABC Even the help of swift-footed John Travolta couldn’t get Kirstie Alley more points from the judges on Monday night’s “Dancing With the Stars.” Alley’s “Look Who’s Talking” co-star appeared in a pre-taped segment as her “Dance Doctor.” The actress and her partner, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, have been grabbing headlines the last few weeks with their dancing mishaps, and Travolta, who has swiveled his hips in films like “Pulp Fiction,” “Grease” and “Saturday Night Fever,” gave his friend a few pointers, joking in the segment that Alley should wear gym shoes instead of high heels. Still, the comedic bit wasn’t enough to bolster a higher score. The two earned 23 points out of 30 (only one point better than the week before), putting them ahead of three couples, who each earned 22 points. Here’s how the others fared: Hines Ward and Kym Johnson: The football star soared to the top of the leaderboard with his rumba to “God Bless the U.S.A.” “You make it look so easy,” judge Carrie Ann Inaba said. “You have the best hip action I have seen in a long time.” Score: 27/30. Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas: Last week’s critical darlings maintained a high position with a samba done to Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the U.S.A.” Score: 26/30. Chris Jericho and Cheryl Burke: The judges loved the wrestler’s interpretation of the Viennese waltz to “America the Beautiful.” “I feel like we’ve underestimated you,” Inaba told him. Head judge Len Goodman gave him 8 points. Score: 26/30. Romeo and Chelsie Hightower: The two performed a foxtrot to “New York, New York,” and impressed the judges with the improvement in Romeo’s posture and arm movements. Score: 26/30. Kendra Wilkinson and Louis Van Amstel : The former playmate and reality star danced a foxtrot to “Yankee Doodle,” and the judges said she’s improving. “It’s much better than last week,” Goodman told her. “It was fun and it was entertaining.” Still, it wasn’t enough to keep them out of the bottom three. Score: 22/30. Petra Nemcova and Dmitry Chaplin: The supermodel and her partner quick-stepped to Elvis’ “Viva Las Vegas,” but judges were none too impressed. They liked that she handled the fast pace of the performance but said that this was far from her best dance. Score: 22/30. Ralph Macchio and Karina Smirnoff: Once the early darlings of this season, they’ve dropped to a three-way tie for the lowest score this week. Their samba to “Sweet Home Alabama” did little to convince the judges that they should be contenders for the title this season. Goodman said the main problem is that Macchio isn’t consistent enough and needs more rhythm. Score: 22/30. Who was your favorite couple this week? Who should go home? Sound off in the comments! Bad Movies We Love: Forrest Gump

Happy Oscar nominations , babies. You got what you wanted, though you have to throw those gold-plated, NSFW Andrew Garfield valentines in the trash. It could be worse. You could be living in 1994, when the Academy honored not Pulp Fiction , The Shawshank Redemption , or my darling Quiz Show with a Best Picture victory, but a staggering sh*t fortress of offensive “whimsicality” called Forrest Gump . You saw it. It’s dumb. Loony. It’s got a lot of nerve. But here’s a secret you and I share: We’re both attracted to bastards, and Forrest Gump ‘s the slimiest john I know. Let’s love it.

Quentin Tarantino Honored At Critics’ Choice Movie Awards

Filmmaker receives inaugural Music+Film Award with some help from Ice Cube, Keri Hilson, Adam Levine and Tim Roth. By Kara Warner Quentin Tarantino receives the inaugural Music+Film Award at the 2011 Critics’ Choice Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images With brief yet genuine words of praise from former colleagues, a flashy movie-clip mash-up and a musical tribute in his honor, Quentin Tarantino stepped into the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards history books Friday night (January 14) after receiving the show’s inaugural Music+Film Award. Ice Cube started things off by telling everyone to hurry up and sit down so he could present before introducing an impressive clip reel that included Tarantino classics “Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Jackie Brown,” “Kill Bill: Vol. 1” and “Vol. 2” and “Inglourious Basterds.” Then, Maroon 5’s Adam Levine (who, along with his bandmates, was moonlighting as the show’s house band for the evening) hit the stage with his guitar for a performance of the “Dogs” musical number “Stuck in the Middle With You,” which doubled as a tribute to late Stealers Wheel frontman Gerry Rafferty . That was followed by a saucy version of “Son of a Preacher Man” by Keri Hilson. “Reservoir Dogs” castmember Tim Roth took the stage after Levine’s and Hilson’s performances to officially hand off the award to Tarantino, who was shown smiling from the audience throughout the tribute. Roth noted that no one deserves the award more than Tarantino and that he was happy to help “celebrate Quentin for using music so damn effectively.” Then the man himself graciously took the stage and talked about how he started filmmaking by hanging out alone in his room, playing records like Duane Eddy’s “Rebel Rouser” and writing scenes to go along with them. “I’m kind of still doing the same thing right now,” he joked. What do you think of Quentin Tarantino’s use of music in film? Let us know in the comments! Oops! ‘Rightwing’ Terror Suspect Turns Out to Be a…Leftwinger

It seems that whenever you hear about a “rightwing” hate crime nowadays, it turns out the the perpetrator turns out to be a leftwinger…much to the disappointment of liberals who continue to maintain the fiction about a violent Tea Party movement. And the latest case of a violent “rightwinger” who turns out to really be a leftwinger comes from my own county of Broward here in South Florida. With my condolences to the left who have been “robbed” of yet another example of supposed Tea Party “hate crime,” here is a report on the arrest of the suspect by Bob Norman of the Broward Palm Beach New Times: The woman charged by the FBI with making a threat that led to the lockdown of more than 300 Broward County schools after hearing

Say What Again to Your New AL Cy Young Award Winner, Felix Hernandez

What a day for Seattle Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez. The man they call King was named the AL Cy Young award winner , despite only having 13 wins for a last place team (ah, the power of peripheral pitching stats). Even better though is that he appears in the latest issue of ESPN the Magazine as Jules from Pulp Fiction . Of course he does! Because there’s such a big intersection between film and sports — there’s not, is there? — the mag took a bunch of athletes and had them recreate famous film scenes. Ahead, watch as very little product is placed in Hernandez’s hair to give him Jules’ famous Jheri-curl.

‘Nanny McPhee Returns’ Is ‘Hugely Satisfying,’ Emma Thompson Says

‘You have so much invested in the story,’ she tells MTV News of writing and starring in the sequel. By Kara Warner Emma Thompson Photo: MTV News It’s hard to believe that it’s already been four years since moviegoers first met Nanny McPhee. Emma Thompson’s no-nonsense portrayal of the homely-yet-helpful nanny had such a positive impact on audiences that a second installment, “Nanny McPhee Returns,” is opening in theaters this week. We recently caught up with the esteemed actress and the film’s writer to discuss why she waited so long to continue her McPhee story (which is based on Christianna Brand’s “Nurse Matilda” books) and how being the screenwriter/actress makes the filmmaking experience doubly satisfying. “There was a big gap … four years, so I had lots of time to do other things,” she explained. Those other things included six films (“Stranger Than Fiction,” “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” “Last Chance Harvey” — a performance for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe — “An Education,” just to name a few) and getting back to work on writing another “McPhee” installment. “It’s very different to reprise a character if you’ve also written the story,” Thompson said. “You have so much invested in the story, and because I have so much involvement in casting and seeing it come together, there’s something hugely satisfying about it, so it’s not just a question of, suddenly I turn up on set and I have to put the makeup on. I’ve been sitting and writing it for years, literally.” Thompson said that, despite the role requiring considerable time in hair and makeup, the fact that the material she wrote inspired it makes it extra special: “In a sense, putting the costume on is the reward for having sat on my own for a few years writing the story.” “Nanny McPhee” opens Friday and co-stars Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rhys Ifans and Maggie Smith and features cameos by Ralph Fiennes and Ewan McGregor. Check out everything we’ve got on “Nanny McPhee Returns.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

As Laura Ingraham Sells New Book, NBC’s Lauer Sells Idea That Dems, GOP Equally Hated

Laura Ingraham was invited on Tuesday’s Today show, to plug her new book The Obama Diaries , and predict how the midterm elections will go but she couldn’t get out of the segment without Today co-anchor Matt Lauer suggesting Republicans are just as unpopular as the Democrats. During the segment Lauer read from a Washington Post poll that stated 6 in 10 Americans don’t have faith in President Obama and 7 in 10 don’t have faith in Congressional Democrats but then also pointed out that 7 in 10 Americans don’t have much confidence in Republicans either as he asked Ingraham: “So what’s the message here? A pox on all their houses.” Ingraham agreed there’s “a lot of cynicism out there,” but went on to point out the folly of assuming Democrats are somehow safe as she retorted to Lauer: “I think that’s a little facile to say, ‘Oh everyone who’s in power is just a disaster and no one trusts anyone.’ I don’t think that’s true. I think what people are seeing, that the nation is in debt. We have a lack of focus on things like the Gulf Coast.” In fact Lauer completely glossed over the fact that the Washington Post poll article he read from clearly stated that “Those most likely to vote in the midterms prefer the GOP over continued Democratic rule by a sizable margin of 56 percent to 41 percent.” After the poll question, Ingraham went on to poke fun at the First Lady’s appearance in the Gulf Coast: I mean I know the First Lady dropped by the Gulf Coast. That was a beautiful image. She went to an ice cream shop. I thought dessert was not a right. But she had a, you know, a chocolate hurricane yesterday. That was a nice image. But we’re losing part of the country, Matt. We’re losing the Gulf Coast day by day by day. I hope the cap works. We’ll see if it does. Ingraham actually had a lot of fun at not only the Obamas’ expense, but also cheekily mocked Lauer’s colleague Brian Williams as seen in the following interview as it was aired on the July 13 Today show: MATT LAUER: Let me ask you about midterm elections. You heard in Chuck’s piece that, that a lot of people are now talking about the possibility Republicans could regain control of the House and the Senate, likelihood of it happening is what? INGRAHAM: Pretty likely in the House, not sure about the Senate. I should say that — this is actually breaking news today – Barack Obama in his diaries actually predicts gaining seats in both the House and the Senate, the bravado is quite something. LAUER: That’s because you write them as fictional entries in his diary. INGRAHAM: Well what’s fiction? What do you mean fiction? LAUER: Let, let me ask you this. INGRAHAM: Fiction?! LAUER: If they do, if Republicans do regain control of the House and make substantial gains in the Senate, will it be a general dissatisfaction voters are showing with Democrats in Congress or the administration or would you point to a specific tipping point? INGRAHAM: Well, who’s in charge? I mean we were promised hope and change. We were promised turning the page. A transparent White House. These are, are regular people but they have a new vision for America. Well a vision is unfolding and it’s not working out so well. That, that’s not political. That’s not ideological. That’s factual. I think people are seeing that jobs are not the focus. We’re doing a lot of, you know, fun partying at the White House, which is also cataloged in The Obama Diaries. There’s a lot of partying. A beautiful family, wonderful image. But the image for the country is not a comedy, Matt, it’s a tragedy. LAUER: If you look, if you look at the front page of the Washington Post there’s a poll and it kind of tells two stories. INGRAHAM: Yeah. LAUER: One it says, about 6 in 10 Americans are, do not have faith in President Obama. Almost 7 in 10 Americans don’t have faith in Democrats in Congress. But it also says- INGRAHAM: But? What’s the but? LAUER: -it also says that just slightly more than 7 in 10 Americans don’t have faith in Republicans in Congress. So what’s the message here? A pox on all their houses? INGRAHAM: Well I think there’s, yeah, there’s, there’s a lot of cynicism out there. But I think that’s a little facile to say, “Oh everyone who’s in power is just a disaster and no one trusts anyone.” I don’t think that’s true. I think what people are seeing, that the nation is in debt. We have a lack of focus on things like the Gulf Coast. I mean I know the First Lady dropped by the Gulf Coast. LAUER: So, so- INGRAHAM: There’s been a failure in leadership. That’s why the polls are where they are. A failure in leadership. LAUER: Let me put you in charge. So if I put you in charge of the campaigns- INGRAHAM: Oh gosh, that’d be fun. LAUER: -campaigns of all the Republicans running in the midterm elections, what’s your bumper sticker? Is it, “We’re not Democrats” or is it something more? INGRAHAM: Well it might be “America First.” It might be focus on American families and American jobs. Period. America. Reignite a love affair with our country! We don’t need someone apologizing for America. We don’t need someone saying, “Well, American exceptionalism yes but there’s also Greek exceptionalism and British exceptionalism.” We need to reignite a love affair with America. That’s what I write about in The Obama Diaries. That’s the, that’s the comedy, the tragedy that’s kind of unfolding today. … LAUER: The Obama Diaries. Fictional entries in Obama’s diary. INGRAHAM: First of all is it fictional to say that the, the President with the burger runs. Remember last, last year Matt, last June when Brian Williams was in the backseat. Now that was funny. In the burger run with Obama? I love Brian Williams at that moment. You know, petting Bo the dog. That was comedy. The Obama Diaries? It’s revealing. LAUER: But, but what, four months or three-and-a-half months before midterm elections- INGRAHAM: Yeah. LAUER: -what do you want people to take away from this? Is this a fun romp? Is this? INGRAHAM: The book is revealing arrogance, incompetence, horror, and, Matt, Barack Obama and Joe Biden. You didn’t know this, they’re two of the funniest people on the face of the planet. You add Marian Robinson, Michelle Obama’s mother? She is, this woman is one of the best people, funniest, common sense. And she wants those daughters to eat junk food when they want to eat it, okay? LAUER: The book is The Obama Diaries. Laura it’s nice to have you. INGRAHAM: It’s great to see you Matt, as always. LAUER: Good to see you as well.
