Martin Solveig At Movie Awards: What Did He Play?

We break down highlights from French DJ’s movie-themed set. By Ryan J. Downey Martin Solveig arrives at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images “The Hunger Games” was one of the big winners Sunday night (June 3) at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , where the juggernaut collected several Golden Popcorns against a musical backdrop culled from some of the most iconic film scores of all time. That nostalgia-inducing soundscape came courtesy of DJ Martin Solveig, who remixed themes from classic movies ranging from “Star Wars” to “Pulp Fiction.” The Black Keys, Fun. and Wiz Khalifa all brought the house down as musical guests at the MTV Movie Awards, held at the Gibson Ampitheatre in Universal City, California. The French electronic-music DJ and producer entertained the audience throughout the show, which was broadcast to viewers live as the show went in and out of commercial breaks. Solveig carefully curated a delicious mixture of some of the most memorable melodies from the movies that have shaped generations of popular culture with their stories, performances, tone and dialog. His set was also as much about the present as the past, perfectly summarized by the mix of the Doors and screamo singer-turned-Grammy-winning dubstep standard-bearer Skrillex. Miss a few tunes? We’ve got you covered. Solveig’s selections on Sunday included “Hello” (Martin Solveig featuring Dragonette), Calvin Harris’ “Feel So Close,” Skrillex and the Doors “Breakin’ a Sweat,” Kavinsky + Lovefoxx’s “Nightcall” (from the movie “Drive”), “Ready 2 Go (Hardwell Remix),” “Misirlou”(made famous all over again in “Pulp Fiction”), Martin Solveig & Dragonette feat. Idoling!!!’s “Big in Japan (Ziggy Stardust Remix),” various mixes of “The Night Out” and some of Daft Punk’s work from “Tron: Legacy.” And these were the tracks spinning off from the most legendary themes: “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Theme (Martin Solveig Remix)” : Clint Eastwood’s “Man With No Name” spaghetti Western trilogy (which concluded with 1966’s “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”) is the stuff of legend, most recently memorialized in Johnny Depp’s animated “Rango.” For many years, Metallica has opened each and every concert with composer Ennio Morricone’s “Ecstasy of Gold” from “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” with the crowd often singing the lyric-less melody in unison as a series of “whoa-oahs.” If the 83-year-old Italian composer was watching the Movie Awards, he heard his composition mixed up for the modern electro age. “Jaws Theme (Martin Solveig Remix)” : Who hasn’t tried to play the “Jaws” theme on a piano at some point? It’s so simple yet so brilliant, like “Chopsticks” for people who want to remember how terrified they were to go into the water. The music from future “Star Wars” composer John Williams certainly helped Steven Spielberg kick off the modern blockbuster featuring the scariest fish since Moby Dick (OK, technically, neither were fish); they re-teamed on several other films. “Imperial March (Martin Solveig Remix)” : “The Imperial March” has been synonymous with ominous evil, impending doom, villainous tyranny and light sabers that only come in the color red since the original “Star Wars” movie kicked off an enduring worldwide phenomenon in 1977. It’s impossible to hear this theme without picturing Darth Vader boarding the starship transporting Princess Leia, holding that guy up in the air by the throat and demanding to know various things. So cool! “Superman Theme (Martin Solveig Remix)” : Hey, what do you know! Another John Williams score. And another grandiose theme that’s synonymous with the film. The music instantly conjures the image of the late, great Christopher Reeve soaring through the skies of Metropolis as Superman. Whether battling Kryptonian super villains, trading barbs with Lex Luthor or romancing Lois Lane (let’s not mention that Richard Pryor entry), Supes was defined by this killer theme. Cole Porter Blowjobs in the Age of TMZ: Putting The Latest Old Hollywood Tell-All in Perspective

Sometimes TMI is just TMI, says writer and critic Dave White, reviewing Scotty Bowers’ Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars : “Stalker-y internet gossip site TMZ is its own TV show now and they’ve got a bus that runs all day long so tourists from Indiana can see where Chris Brown beat up Rihanna….It’s a time in Hollywood history when Mel Gibson takes up with his mistress, puts a baby in her, screams weird racist things on the phone , they laugh about it on The View and then Jodie Foster turns around and puts him in her next movie…And even if [Katharine] Hepburn was a lesbian with a bad complexion and [Spencer] Tracy a conflicted bisexual alcoholic, what purpose does it serve if I also know that Scotty Bowers provided her with as many as 150 paid female ‘companions’ over her lifetime?” [ Los Angeles Review of Books ]

WATCH: An Amazing Prometheus Trailer… Made Out of Paper

Can’t get enough of this Friday’s Prometheus ? Then you’ll want to watch this shot-for-shot fan trailer that recreates every moment of Ridley Scott’s second Prometheus trailer with paper and flashlights, which is at once the antithesis of the effects-laden sci-fi pic and a neat-o celebration of its fantastical imagery. Plus: Paper Fassbender! Still hot. Obviously I have a fondness for animated fan trailers, but this one takes the form to a new level. It’s inventive, detailed, and meticulously reconstructed, and whoever drew these characters did an especially fine job on Paper Idris Elba. I’d probably watch an entire Prometheus movie made of paper. [via Film Drunk ]

The Perks of Being a Wallflower Trailer: Logan Lerman’s So-Called Life

The Perks of Being a Wallflower stars Three Musketeers cutie Logan Lerman as introverted-but-adorbs high school freshman Charlie (Lerman), who enters teen society searching for like-minded “misfits” and finds Emma Watson and Ezra Miller (last seen making a very different impression on his classmates in We Need to Talk About Kevin ). Is Charlie going to go all Angela Chase, narrating the brave new world of busting weird dance moves at Homecoming and standing up to bullies and shouting ironically at cheerleaders? If you’ve read Stephen Chbosky’s source novel of the same name, you already know what to expect — and it’s not quite as My So-Called Life -y as the trailer suggests. (Chbosky also writes and directs the film, with John Malkovich among producers who are onboard.) While we get a glimpse here of Paul Rudd as Charlie’s teacher, there’s not much of a peek at the rest of the cast, including Nicholas Braun, Johnny Simmons, Kate Walsh, Dylan McDermott, and Melanie Lynskey. Still… Verdict: In for the triple threat of young talent that is Lerman, Watson, and Miller alone. Bring the angst, kids. The Perks of Being a Wallflower hits theaters on September 14.

MTV Movie Awards Best Fight Category Pits Potter Against Katniss

We size up the Best Fight contenders, from Tom Cruise to Jonah Hill. Cast your vote now! By Kevin P. Sullivan Daniel Radcliffe and Ralph Fiennes in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” Photo: Warner Bros. With the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards just under a week away, it’s time to get you as prepared as possible for the biggest night in movies. That’s why we’re kicking off Movie Awards Week here at MTV News with exclusives, interviews with A-listers and deep dives into the awards, leading right up to the big night on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET. For our first look at the categories, we’re dissecting Best Fight blow by blow. Sure, an action-packed fight sequence will always grab our attention, but the ones that really stay with us are the ones that are bigger, badder and funnier than anything else we saw this year. But which one takes home the golden popcorn is up to you to decide, so head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to cast your vote. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill vs. Kid Gang – “21 Jump Street” There are two distinctly different fighting styles on display in this brawl from “21 Jump Street.” First, you have the typical Channing Tatum route with well-executed blows and multiple opponents going down. Then you have Jonah Hill’s style, the way we would all fight. You run away a little bit, and when things get really, really scary, you do your best to convince your foe that “the fight’s over.” As you can see in the clip, one works better than the other. Daniel Radcliffe vs. Ralph Fiennes – “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” The Luke Skywalker versus Darth Vader of our time, after eight movies, Harry Potter finally faced off against the dark wizard who left him an orphan in the series’ most epic fight sequence. The millions who had read the final book before seeing the film knew that everything would turn out OK for HP, but you couldn’t help but hold your breath as Harry and Voldemort dueled one last time. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson vs. Alexander Ludwig – “The Hunger Games” And then there were three. Thanks to a last-minute rule change, the star-crossed (maybe) lovers Katniss and Peeta had an opportunity to both make it out of the arena alive. The only one in their way was the violent, but not completely evil Cato. For most of the tournament, Katniss was able to best her foes through cleverness or luck, but for his last fight, it would have to be up-close and personal. Tom Cruise vs. Michael Nyqvist – “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” If you look at Cruise and then you size up Nyqvist, the fight seems a little one-sided. Ethan Hunt is a world-class secret agent, and Kurt Hendricks is a kind-of chubby nuclear strategist. Something’s got to give. What you don’t count on is just how crazy Hendricks is, but we all learned the hard way when he takes a swan dive off the top level of a car park to ensure his victory. That’s hard-core. Tom Hardy vs. Joel Edgerton – “Warrior” When two estranged brothers enter a mixed martial arts competition to determine the best in the world, they will inevitably end up fighting in the final round. We knew that much going into “Warrior.” What we didn’t know was that Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy would not pull any punches, so to speak, and deliver one of the most brutal and heart-wrenching bouts of 2011. ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Movie Awards Footage: What We Saw

Brand-new footage gives fans terrifying insight into Bane, who may be Batman’s most menacing enemy ever. By Kevin P. Sullivan Tom Hardy as Bane in “Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros. After weeks of waiting, never-before-seen footage from ” The Dark Knight Rises ” debuted at the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards , and no matter how much awesomely new material we saw, the clip could never be long enough. Christian Bale , Gary Oldman , Joseph Gordon-Levitt , and director Christopher Nolan were on hand to present the footage, and they did not let us down. The montage included brand-new scenes with Catwoman, more footage of the aerial vehicle, the Bat, and a terrifying shot of Bane, sure to stay burned in the collective memory of Batman fans. Here’s our take on the new “Dark Knight Rises” footage. The Batcave It may seem like a silly thing to look forward to when you consider all the action and chemically enhanced super villains in the film, but the Batcave will be making a welcome return for the final installment of Nolan’s Batman trilogy. The secret lair took one movie off after it burned to the ground in “Batman Begins,” but the newest footage from the movie shows the underground sanctuary up-and-running with a shiny, new Batsuit case to boot. The Bat’s Best Friend The latest round of TV spots has shown us the more playful side to Nolan’s take on Selina Kyle. Like any good version of Catwoman, she’s going to tease Bruce Wayne, maybe play a little hard to get, but when it comes down to it, she isn’t all that bad. The last trailer even showed her fighting alongside the Caped Crusader. In the MTV Movie Awards footage, the best part of the segment came when a frightened guard turned the corner to come face-to-face with Kyle, who gave him a little tip. “He’s behind you,” she said, of course referring to the upside down Batman, waiting to pounce. The clip made us incredibly excited to find out just how well these two work together. “Let the Games Begin” It appears that Bane has one thing on his mind: Taking Gotham for his own. It starts with the destruction of the football stadium during the Gotham Rogues game, and if the clip is any indication, Bane seems to be pretty successful in his takeover initially. We see his thugs dragging a man into a chair as if he’s about to face the judge, jury and executioner. Men with guns freely roam the wintry streets of Gotham. The new footage makes us wonder just how bad things get before Batman is (hopefully) able to save the day. That Shot Of Bane You know the one. Near the very end of the segment, Batman and Bane charge at each other, like we’ve seen a dozen times before in trailers and TV spots. Only this time, Bane grabs Batman’s fist as he tries to throw a punch, and the look on Tom Hardy’s face is terrifying. It’s the kind of look that instantly makes you believe Selina Kyle in the next scene when she says, “That you should be as afraid of him as I am.” Believe us, Catwoman, we saw the look on his face. We’re afraid. Jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, gut-busting moments galore. See what just happened at the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards ! Andy Samberg Thinks Russell Brand Will ‘Kill It’ At Movie Awards

‘It’s going to be a real stretch from the VMAs,’ Samberg joked about Brand hosting the Movie Awards, airing Sunday at 9 p.m. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Andy Samberg Photo: MTV News UNIVERSAL CITY, California — We already have a good idea of how the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , but will the rest of his show be up to snuff? This will be the two-time Video Music Awards emcee’s first stint , and we’re hoping he will live up to his previous performances. During the , MTV News turned to former Movie Awards host Andy Samberg to hear his prediction on Brand’s hosting prowess. Samberg said that it probably wouldn’t be too different from Brand’s other times hosting MTV awards shows. “It’s going to be a real stretch from the VMAs,” he joked. “What’s he going to do? I just wonder if in the beginning he’s going to have some short film about how he’s got to make it to the Movie Awards in time. Is he going to make it? He’s in this film, how’s he going to make it? Every host seems to have this problem,” Samberg continued sarcastically. It’s true, we’ve seen a host or 10 do that familiar sketch in the past, though Samberg managed to avoid falling into that trap with his hilarious spoof on “Slumdog Millionaire,” “The Reader,” “Twilight” and “Star Trek” during his hosting gig. We’re sure Brand also has something different up his sleeve this year, and Samberg seemed to genuinely be looking forward to seeing what madness the Brit will concoct. “So many ingredients in a Movie Awards stew. I mean, celebs, spoofs, great performances,” he said. But the key ingredient? “A great host. That’s going to kill it, man. Russell’s hilarious.” Samberg took some time to reminisce on his own year hosting the Movie Awards, which apparently earned him $5 (well, in addition to whatever his salary was). Since he hosted back in 2009 — the first year “Twilight” was a nominee — Samberg said he was a little overwhelmed by the fan hysteria. “My year was like the first year of ‘Twilight,’ so you couldn’t hear anything. It was just a din of screaming girls,” he said. “At one point, I walked out and I had a bet with somebody backstage and I just went, ‘Twilight,’ and everyone went, ‘Wahh!’ and I was like, I just made five bucks.” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! Kristen Stewart or Chris Hemsworth… or Neither: Who’s the Fairest Box Office Draw for Snow White and the Huntsman?

You might guess most folks flocking to theaters this weekend for Snow White and the Huntsman are the legions of diehard fans of Twilight ‘s Kristen Stewart , who stars in the fantasy adventure as the sword-swinging Snow White. Maybe, even, they’ll come for co-star Chris Hemsworth — he of Thor and Avengers fame. But surprise, surprise — who’d have thought the big draw, at least for folks who hit opening day today, would be neither of SWATH ‘s up-and-coming talent? PMC Studios’ Beyond the Trailer (owned by Movieline’s parent company PMC) caught up with some early Snow White adopters at the AMC E-Walk today, and they told Grace Randolph they were there to see the Evil Queen — Charlize Theron . What’s more: At least one woman says she actually saw the film despite K-Stew. Also: Props to the older lady at 3:50 dropping truth bombs about dead ugly people, who wants to buy presents for Hemsworth’s children (even though they’d most certainly be impossibly beautiful Hems-spawn, but whatevs). Surprised at all the Charlize love? Agree with the consensus that KStew’s performance pales in comparison to Theron’s near-camp extravaganza? Or are you REALLY in it just to see Hemsworth swing that axe around a forest? For more movie news, commentary, and reviews, check out Beyond the Trailer on YouTube.
