‘Sin City 2’ Director Confirms Casting Details

Robert Rodriguez tells MTV News that Rosario Dawson and Mickey Rourke are ‘pumped’ for ‘A Dame to Kill For.’ By Kevin P. Sullivan Robert Rodriguez Photo: Anna Webber/ WireImage After years of waiting, fans of Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s ” Sin City ” finally got confirmation that their dreams would be answered. Last week, Rodriguez announced he would begin production on the long-awaited sequel this summer and that casting would begin soon. The official title will be ” Sin City: A Dame to Kill For ,” taking its name from Miller’s second story in the series. MTV News spoke with Robert Rodriguez for the Blu-ray release of ” Roadracers ,” an early film of his, and he opened up about the sequel and returning to Miller’s world. MTV : There was huge news last week with the green light for “Sin City 2.” You’re beginning casting now? Robert Rodriguez : We still have to cast. I’m shooting “Machete” next month, and we go right into “Sin City.” It might overlap, but we haven’t done any casting yet, except for the people who we know are already in it and returning. “A Dame to Kill For,” all those people come back. I just had lunch with Mickey [Rourke] this weekend. He’s all excited to come back, but he’s probably the first one. I saw Rosario [Dawson] too. I ran into her for something else, and she’s pumped. They’ve always been excited about doing another one, so that will be fun. MTV : Does casting responsibility fall primarily on you and Frank Miller? Rodriguez : That will be the process. Frank and I go together to meet everybody, and I like seeing his reaction because he drew these characters so long and when they walk in the room, you see it on his face. He doesn’t know who it’s going to be until he sees them. Then he’s like, “This is exactly like the character I created.” It’s pretty exciting. MTV : You’ve said before that you wanted to use three acts again. Is that still the plan? Rodriguez : Three is a good number. Dramatically, the three-act structure has lasted and is tried and true. I did an anthology before called “Four Rooms,” and if you look it up, anthologies are never successful. That’s the end of that, I thought. Then I said, “I bet I can do an anthology if it’s the same director, and not four, not five, not eight stories. That’s too many.” Three is a good number. I think two is just weird. Three feels like a dramatic structure, even if they’re separate stories. I feels like one, two, three acts and maybe a wrap around. It worked on “Sin City,” and that’s probably the first anthology that ever worked, that I can think of. So I’m going to stick with that template because, one, I invented it. I can claim it and go, “I’m going to do it again.” If it doesn’t work, then I’ll know that “Sin City” was just a fluke. MTV : Was a “Sin City” sequel always in the back of your mind? I know there have been plans for years. Rodriguez : It was immediately [known] that we were going to do it. I think it was 2007, and I was already meeting with Angelina Jolie and people to do it. The Weinsteins had just started a new company. They just didn’t have the money to do it at the time. It was like, “Go do another movie or two and come back. We’ll be ready.” I went off and did a couple movies. Frank went off and did some movies. Then it got harder and harder to come back and find the time to do it. We missed that moment when it was ready to go. Then it was so far afterwards that it might as well have been any time now, but people never lost their appetite for it. They still come up to us and say “When are you doing another ‘Sin City’?” We thought we had to do it at some point. Now we’re just making the time. MTV : Are you still looking at casting Angelina Jolie? Rodriguez : I haven’t even gotten to meet with her yet about it or discuss with Frank about who we would want to go with or talk to first. That’s a fun process, but that probably won’t happen in the next month. MTV : Several movies have imitated the style from “Sin City.” Is there a desire at all to reinvent the wheel a bit? Rodriguez : I probably thought that back then, but now, even people did green screen stuff, “Sin City” is very unique. It’s not just the visuals. It’s the story and how it’s told and Frank’s storytelling that works when you’re looking at it in a book or in a film. It works in any way, shape or form. He’s just a great writer and visualist and storyteller with pictures in a way that’s different than what anyone else can think of. It’s so unique, and I think that’s why people keep asking for another “Sin City” in particular. In terms of just visuals and effects, yeah, it will evolve from the original, for sure. Are you pumped for “Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For”? Let us know in the comments!

‘Magic Mike’ Trailer: Five Magical Scenes

We strip down the new sneak peek for the best moments of Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and more. By Kara Warner Channing Tatum in “Magic Mike” Photo: Warner Bros. For those of us who’ve been dying to see “Magic Mike” since it was announced, Christmas came early Wednesday (April 18) in the form of the film’s first official trailer . For months we’ve been obsessing over as many details as we could find — from the first official photos to chance encounters with the cast and their hilarious stories of thong mishaps . And now we finally have two minutes of glorious footage to watch over and over again. Here are the five key scenes in the “Magic Mike” trailer: Classic Cop Routine The trailer opens with Channing Tatum and Alex Pettyfer knocking on the door of a party, dressed as local police officers. “We keep getting complaints of noise and underage drinking,” Tatum says in a serious tone to the all-female crowd, before pinning one lady against the wall for further questioning. “Everybody sit down because we’re going to be here for a while.” “You don’t have anything sharp on you that I can stick myself with, do you?” “No,” says the girl, anxiously. “Good, because I do,” Tatum says saucily before we hear the telltale ripping noise that means he’s just expertly exited his uniform. Channing Busts a Move Those of us who’ve been following Tatum’s career since his star-making turn in “Step Up” are well aware that the man has moves, and they are on full display in this trailer. We see Tatum working it with a little boy-band choreography, doing some breakdancing, flipping through the air, spinning from the ceiling, etc. It’s all in the name of putting on a good show and stripping down to his skivvies, which we don’t actually see. “You are the husband they never had,” we hear strip-club owner Dallas (Matthew McConaughey) say to Tatum’s Magic Mike in voice-over. “You are that dreamboat guy that never came along.” McConaughey Being McConaughey We are not at all surprised that McConaughey’s character Dallas looks right at home onstage, putting it all out there for a bunch of ladies. “The law says you cannot touch, but I see a lot of lawbreakers out there,” he says to a squealing crowd, wearing nothing but a cowboy hat, a leather vest and blue jeans, all the while flashing that million-dollar grin of his — not to mention the several quick shots of McConaughey in action as part of the male revue, as well as his own stunt as some kind of fire-breather. Introducing Cody Horn Who knew we’d see so much of the female characters in this first spot? The lady who’s front and center is Cody Horn, an up-and-coming actress whose work you might have seen on “The Office.” Horn is introduced as the girl-next-door/sister to Pettyfer’s character, who falls for Mike and attempts to keep him grounded in reality. There are a lot of cute and flirty moments between Horn and Tatum’s characters, and it’s obvious that Horn’s “normal girl” will be the one to eventually convince “Magic Mike” to hang up his stripper shoes and pursue his dreams of going into custom furniture design. Yup, furniture design. Disappointing Amounts Of Bomer And Manganiello We’re not ones to complain or anything, but because we know exactly how many gorgeous men are in this film’s cast, we expected to see a lot more of them in the trailer. There was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot of “True Blood” heartthrob Joe Manganiello hurting his back mid-tease, but it was entirely too short. And where in the heck was blue-eyed cutie Matt Bomer? We’re hoping they’re holding onto the proverbial goods for unveiling in future teasers. The 10 Most Influential Film Personalities on Time’s 100 Most Influential List, In Order

For the 14th consecutive year, the folks at Time Magazine have once again passed me over when considering their annual roster of the world’s 100 Most Influential People . Heretics! So be it — even an incomplete list is worth visiting judgment upon. Let’s check out (and rank, naturally) the film personalities included this year. And to my publicist: You’re fired! 10. Chelsea Handler * 9. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy 8. Asghar Farhadi 7. Claire Danes 6. Jessica Chastain 5. Viola Davis 4. Kristen Wiig 3. Louis C.K. 2. Tilda Swinton 1. Harvey Weinstein As for the rest of the list? I defer to Harvey . *: As long as Chelsea Handler makes terrible ethnic jokes at mainstream movie junkets, she will be a film personality. And the least-influential to boot. Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Exclusive ‘Battleship’: Taylor Kitsch Gets Flirty With Brooklyn Decker

In addition to alien-vs.-soldier action, the film has a softer side, as our exclusive clip shows. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Amy Wilkinson Taylor Kitsch in “Battleship” Photo: Universal Pictures “Fire all the weapons!” Liam Neeson yells in the first “Battleship” trailer , a command dutifully followed by a young naval officer in the film but one that failed to trigger the dude-I-gotta-see-this-movie jones of many moviegoers. But we had a feeling a lot of folks were missing the point of both the popcorn flick’s whiz-bang alien-vs.-soldier brawling and the sun-dappled human-on-human seduction giving “Battleship” its warm, gooey center. The film is perfectly constructed to fill the “Transformers”-sized hole in the summer movie calendar. Audiences overseas are already responding, shelling out $58 million to check it out since the April 11 foreign release. Our turn comes on May 18. Before then, and having seen the CGI-heavy theatrics in “Battleship” trailers, it’s time to take a look at the film’s softer side. That’s where MTV News’ Summer Movie Preview comes into play, delivering an exclusive clip featuring Taylor Kitsch and his bodacious birthday wish, Brooklyn Decker. The scene in the clip comes early in the film, with Kitsch’s unemployed slacker, Alex Hopper, sharing a sad-sack birthday party in a dingy bar with his brother, Stone (Alexander Skarsg

‘Spider-Man’ Director Marc Webb Plays With ‘Amazing’ Canon

‘We wanted to do our own thing,’ filmmaker tells MTV News about his approach to the upcoming Spider-Man reboot for Sony. By Josh Wigler Andrew Garfield in “The Amazing Spider-Man” Photo: Sony Pictures Stop us if you’ve heard this one: Boy genius gets bit by a radioactive spider, gains superpowers, acts like a jerk for a while until his beloved uncle dies as a result, thereby inspiring him to start using his powers for good. A familiar tale, right? Those details — most of them at least — remain firmly in place for “The Amazing Spider-Man,” the upcoming cinematic reboot of the iconic Marvel superhero. But director Marc Webb wants you to know that there’s much more to this new tale than meets the eye. Some of the differences between the Sam Raimi/Tobey Maguire “Spider-Man” era and the upcoming new order are very clear right off the bat: new filmmaker, new leading man in Andrew Garfield. But there are other, more subtle differences too: a tone that’s a bit more grounded in reality, a new parent-centric backstory and a little filmmaking trick you might have heard of called 3-D. All of these things and more work together to bring moviegoers a Spider-Man they’re familiar with, but one who’s more than willing to spin a few curveballs along the way. As Summer Movie Preview week continues, MTV News presents our conversation with Webb about all things “Amazing” — from his “Spider-Man” fandom and the cues he took from the Raimi/Maguire films to why Garfield was the perfect choice to play Peter Parker, and much more. MTV : Aside from having a last name in common with his weapons of choice, can you give us a sense of your Spider-Man fandom? How long have you been a fan of this character? Marc Webb : I knew it obviously from when I was a little kid. I was between comic book series, but there was the animated series that I saw, that sort of thing. But I don’t know what it is: Kids have an intuitive attraction to Spider-Man, something that exists beyond the comic books and all the different media that’s out there. There’s something so simple, symmetrical and iconic about that design that kids are just drawn to it. So I can’t say when I started becoming a fan, but I’ve always been curious. It wasn’t until I got a call from Sony that I started thinking about the character in a more intellectual way. At first, I thought it was an absurd idea, but what stayed with me and haunted me was the idea that this character is so intensely relatable: He’s a superhero who’s just a kid. He’s not a billionaire, not an alien. His normal identity is so ordinary in so many ways, and so relatable, and that’s something about Marvel that I always liked. They made the teenagers the superheroes: the X-Men and Spider-Man, whereas [teens] were just the sidekicks in DC Comics. I think it was at a time in your life when you’re starting to access these stories and mythologies that make the wish-fulfillment component much more intense. I know I have a 17-year-old boy trapped inside of me forever, and that’s something with an instant appeal. MTV : It wasn’t so long ago that there was a trilogy of popular “Spider-Man” films … Webb : What ? No ! What the f—? MTV : It’s true! [Laughs.] It’s certainly a tough act to follow. Was there anything from the Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire era that you looked to when approaching your version of “Spider-Man,” or did you want to stay away from those films and start completely fresh? Webb : We wanted to do our own thing. We wanted a different villain and a different tone. There wasn’t anything I wanted to recapture from those movies, beyond their respect for the character. I thought that was a really wonderful thing. We’re doing something different and new and risky, and I understand that. But it’s something that I’ve found very appealing. I couldn’t let the opportunity go. I have deep and abiding respect for Sam and Tobey and all those movies that were made, but we are trying to achieve something different. It’s a unique set of circumstances when you talk about Spider-Man, because he’s been around for 50 years. People talk about rebooting characters. It’s different than, say, Harry Potter, who has just a handful of books for his entire canon. There’s so much material in Spider-Man that there are so many stories to tell and so many characters. It’s more like James Bond or something like that. MTV : Judging from trailers and the few scenes that have been released online, the takeaway for me is that this is a grittier “Spider-Man” movie, a bit more dangerous than some of the more cartoony takes we’ve seen previously. But the prankster side is still in place too. There’s a clip online of Peter really toying with a guy as he’s webbing him up, so the comedy is definitely there. How did you find the right mix of comedy and darkness in this movie? Webb : I wouldn’t say we were ever after pursuing darkness. We just wanted to keep things real. I think it comes down to everything having to emerge from a real place. The reason why Spider-Man is being so playful in that moment is that as a character, he’s feeling drunk on his power. He’s having a really good time. He’s becoming a bit of a bully there. He’s not being deeply altruistic, and that’s something you’ll learn more about when you see the movie. It’s a reflection of his attitude: He puts that mask on and the shy kid is gone. He’s now this really empowered superhero. That means having fun, sometimes at other people’s expense. MTV : Andrew had that great quote the other week, of Spider-Man acting like an Internet troll in the movie. Webb : It’s totally true. You get to see and do whatever you want without any personal consequences. There’s a danger to that … but there’s a thrill to it too. MTV : I was very happy with the casting of Andrew pretty much immediately. Looking at his work in “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” he struck me as a guy who could nail the comedy and the drama of the role . When you saw Andrew audition, what was it about him that stuck out to you? What made you see Peter Parker in this guy? Webb : He was both funny and earnest and he had a physical ability that I knew I could rely on. I wanted the movie to be funny, but I also wanted the movie to have real emotional depth and an emotional range. He can do that, and that’s incredibly rare: to find somebody who can be light and witty but can also communicate the real tragedy of the character vis-

N.O.R.E. Gets Wale And Waka Flocka Hooked On His Latest Mixtape Drug

‘I wanted to pick a wild name,’ N.O.R.E. tells Mixtape Daily of his new Crack on Steroids tape. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Adam Murphy N.O.R.E. Photo: MTV News Main Pick Headliners : N.O.R.E. and DJ Green Lantern Representing : Queens, New York Mixtape : Crack on Steroids Real Spit : The Super Thug is back at it again. Almost a year after dropping his N.O.R.E.aster EP, Noreaga returns with the drug-induced Crack on Steroids. “I wanted to pick a wild name so when people look at it, they’ll say, ‘What the hell is that?’ ” N.O.R.E. told Mixtape Daily about his latest release. Picking up where he left off last year with his street single “Nore Shot Somebody,” the C-N-N rapper keeps things “Grimey” on the tape-opening “Kenny Powers.” It’s not exactly an ode to the popular HBO comedy ; instead, N.O. uses Danny McBride’s fictional character as a thinly veiled reference to his distinct brand of cocaine. While partner-in-rhyme Capone was locked up in the late 1990s, N.O.R.E. proved he could hold things down as a soloist, crafting a number of hits like “Super Thug” and “Grimey.” On C.O.S., however, the Queens, New York, MC invites a number of his rap friends to the party. RZA shows up for “Hare Krishna” and Game, Busta Rhymes and Waka Flocka Flame pitch in on the Chris Brown-sampling “Lehhhgooo.” On the latter, producer Charli Brown flips Breezy’s opening ad lib from “Look at Me Now” and turns it into a catchy chorus. Wale also jumps on “Get Her” and will.i.am channels Slick Rick on “We Ain’t,” then Nore’s latest signee, Glacierz, proves she can hang with the fellas and delivers a standout verse on “War Song.” For all his guest spots, though, N.O.R.E. maintains his vibe throughout the tape — not that we expected anything less. ‘Avengers’ Director Joss Whedon Loves The ‘Duplicitous’ Black Widow

‘Her story is among my favorites, because she’s not a hero,’ he says of Scarlett Johansson’s character for Summer Movie Preview Week. By Kara Warner Captain America in “Avengers” Photo: Walt Disney Studios One of the most intriguing aspects about the very highly anticipated and superhero-studded “Marvel’s The Avengers” is in wondering how much the audience will see of each individual character, as well as what the actor in question has brought to the table in portraying a new side of their respective Marvel hero in the massive film. When MTV News caught up with mastermind and director Joss Whedon recently, we asked him if any of his castmembers brought something extra to the film via their pre-production knowledge or ideas about their storied characters. “They’re all very serious, dedicated people,” Whedon said with pride. “Scarlett [Johansson] knew more about the Black Widow than I did; that was a bit of a surprise. She claims that it was all from Wikipedia, though.” Whedon said Johansson’s character arc is one of his favorites in the film, because it’s so much different from that of the other bona fide superheroes like Captain America and Iron Man. “Her story is among my favorites, because she’s not a hero. She doesn’t live in a hero’s world; she lives in a very noir/duplicitous world of being a spy, and there’s a darkness to her and her past,” he explained. “There’s also a real beauty to her relationship with Clint Barton [a.k.a. Hawkeye] that, for me, is as exciting as anything in the movie, really.” For her part, Johansson joked with us recently at the film’s premiere that because Widow isn’t a superhero, she’s happy she survived the action-packed shoot. “We all took a pretty big beating,” she said. “I would have to say either [Black] Widow or Hawkeye [get their butts kicked hardest]. We’re on the ground, so we’re fighting hand-to-hand and it hurts.” She also teased a pretty epic fight sequence with another character she couldn’t name. “All I can say is that I had to fight someone else in this film, and they beat the crap out of me in stunt rehearsals. I have to say I could not believe it,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘Can you hold it back, OK? You know, I’m trying to work it out here. I’ve got smaller muscles than you,’ ” Johansson said. “I was dragged across the [floor]. When we finally finished [filming] that scene I was just happy to be alive.” It’s Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated summer movies . In White Folks News: Ashton Kutcher And Mila Kunis Are Reportedly Dating

Ashton Kutcher And Mila Kunis Are Dating This one sounds a little more believable than the Rihanna shenanigans: Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis played a couple on the sitcom “That 70′s Show.” Now reports say that the two are dating in real life. The website X17.com reports that the pair spent the day together Sunday, heading out furniture shopping in the afternoon and then on a date to sushi restaurant Asanebo in Los Angeles at night. The pair reportedly headed back to Kutcher’s newly purchased mansion in Hollywood Hills after the cozy dinner.”Ashton was touching Mila’s hand and Mila was all dressed up,” a source tells the site. “She looked hot; this was definitely more than a dinner between friends — this was a full-on date!” The website snapped Kutcher and Kunis two heading back to his car after the dinner. While Kutcher wore a navy blue sweater over a button-down shirt, Kunis opted for an off-the-shoulder top with skinny jeans and nude heels. Both avoided making eye contact with the camera. X17.com furthers that the pair has been seen together several times on recent occasions, and has even spent the night at each other’s abodes in recent weeks. Both actors are newly single after long-term relationships. Should Kutcher and Kunis start officially seeing each other, it would be a case of life imitating art. Both actors starred in movies about friends becoming lovers in 2011. While Mila Kunis paired up with Justin Timberlake in the film “Friends with Benefits,” Kutcher fell for Natalie Portman in the movie “No Strings Attached.” Interesting…. Source More On Bossip! Justin Timberlake’s Home Decor And Other Celeb Side Gigs

Dr. Dre, Lady Gaga and others have also used their music careers as launch pads to much more. By Fallon Prinzivalli Justin Timberlake Photo: Elle Decor Can we still call Justin Timberlake a triple threat? We’re not questioning the fact that he can sing, dance and act — although, he hasn’t done the first two in quite some time, so he may need to remind us — as much as we’re thinking that “triple” doesn’t begin to describe his threat. Aside from the incredible success ‘NSYNC and his solo career brought him, Timberlake launched a clothing line (William Rast), has his own brand of tequila (901), has co-owned or endorsed multiple restaurants including Chi, Destino and Southern Hospitality, and we hear he’s a great golfer. Now, the news came Monday (April 16) via Elle D

Rihanna To Make Third Appearance On ‘Saturday Night Live’

‘We Found Love’ singer will be the musical guest on the May 5 episode, hosted by Eli Manning. By John Mitchell Rihanna Photo: Getty Images Rihanna will hit the “Saturday Night Live” stage for the third time when she performs on the legendary sketch comedy show on May 5. New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning will host. The pop star has a long history with the show and has always been a standout guest. While she always nails it on stage for her musical performance, Rihanna also tends to pop up throughout the show to flex her comedy muscles in sketches and, most notably, in rumored-to-be-departing Andy Samberg’s buzzed-about digital shorts. Her first “Shy Ronnie” short landed an Emmy nomination and she reprised the role for another digital short over Halloween weekend in 2010, playing Clyde to Shy Ronnie’s Bonnie as the unlikely couple holds up a bank and Ronnie’s bashful nature causes their plan to go array. For all intents and purposes, Rihanna’s appearance is to promote both her album Talk That Talk and her film debut in the upcoming “Battleship,” but for those still keeping an eye on the happenings of Ri Ri and ex Chris Brown, it’s worth noting that May 5 is also Brown’s birthday, so get ready for plenty of “will Chris Brown show up for a surprise appearance” speculation. The gig will be Manning’s first time hosting, though he made a brief cameo when his brother, Peyton, hosted in 2007. Are you excited for Rihanna’s “SNL” return? Do you think Chris Brown will show up with some “Birthday Cake”? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Rihanna
