Brad Pitt On Oscar Nods: ‘Pancakes For Everyone’

Actor tells Today Show he’s ‘ecstatic’ about ‘Moneyball’ and ‘Tree of Life’ nominations. By Jocelyn Vena Brad Pitt in “Moneyball” Photo: Sony Pictures On Tuesday morning (January 24), “Moneyball” star Brad Pitt heard his name called several times when the Oscar nominations were announced . Shortly after, the actor called in to “The Today Show” to open up about being recognized not only for his acting skills, but also his work getting the baseball film off the ground as a producer. “We’re ecstatic over here. It means so much considering this film was just dead on the rocks two years ago,” he said from L.A. “It took a lot of people to get it to the screen. It’s a great honor. I’m really happy.” Pitt got a couple nods thanks to his producer credit on the best picture nominee and his work in the leading role. His co-star Jonah Hill also got some love with a supporting actor nomination. “I’m so happy for Jonah Hill,” he gushed. “I can’t tell you.” Another film he recently starred in, “Tree of Life,” also got some Academy love, making Pitt’s morning an especially good one. “I’m doubly happy that ‘Tree of Life’ made it in there,” he said. “We thought we were all but forgotten; just excited for [director and nominee] Terry Malick.” Pitt will once again face off against his pal and Golden Globe winner George Clooney for Actor in a Leading Role for his work in “The Descendants,” but he’s not too worried about it. “I’m sure we’ll be exchanging many good words later,” he said. “It’s more fun to have a friend there and no one does it better than George. I say give him all the trophies, and when you run out of trophies, make some new ones and give him those too. ” When asked what prize he wants to win most come Oscars night, he played it cool saying, “I could not pick. I’m just so happy that both these films have been recognized. ‘Tree of Life’ was just as difficult to get made and it’s gonna be pancakes for everyone this morning.” Did “Moneyball” deserve all the Academy love? ‘Dark Knight Rises’: Who Is Miranda Tate?

We discuss just whom Marion Cotillard is playing in The Weekly Rising. By Kevin P. Sullivan Marion Cotillard Photo: Todd Williamson/ Getty Images The topic of this week’s column might be considered a spoiler. Admittedly, it’s probably the spoiler that most fans already know about, but if you wish to remain uninformed, I suggest you stop reading. Over the next two weeks, we’ll be discussing the two “Dark Knight Rises” characters that have stirred the most controversy, outside the hugely overblown debacle surrounding Bane’s voice. Almost as soon as Christopher Nolan cast Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt , fans called “B.S.” How could a series with such a storied history for casting great actors as classic characters put Cotillard and Gordon-Levitt in made-up roles like Miranda Tate and John Blake? The answer is, Nolan wouldn’t. Fans saw through the ruse immediately, pointed at Cotillard and cried “Talia al Ghul.” With so much talk swirling around “The Dark Knight Rises” in the early months of its development and confirmation that it would circle back to touch on some themes from “Batman Begins,” Talia seemed like a choice candidate for a secondary “Rises” villain. By the time Joey King confirmed that she would be playing young Talia al Ghula , Tate’s true identity was all but sealed. But now we find ourselves in a curious position. With everything but an official press release telling us that Marion Cotillard will play Talia — picking up where her dear old dad, Ra’s al Ghul, left off — how will that affect the overall arch of “Dark Knight Rises”? One of the most common complaints about “The Dark Knight” was Two-Face’s uneven role. It was the Joker’s movie, and many felt that adding such an iconic villain toward the end of the film didn’t do the character justice. Is Talia destined to become the next Two-Face? It all depends on when Miranda Tate’s true identity is revealed. Such a high-profile comic book adaptation like “Dark Knight Rises” has to contend with different hazards than a normal film. The Tate/Talia twist could work in a film that didn’t feature such well-known characters. Instead, fans have a whole universe of potential true identities to assign if they feel a character is lying, which they did with Tate. For the reveal to not fall absolutely flat, Nolan would have to introduce the truth in a way that’s less “A-ha! I got you!” and more a natural progression of the story line. A spoiler of this caliber does the least amount of damage when less of the plot depends on its shock value. Attempting to make the Talia reveal a big shocker would feel would be a fool’s errand at this juncture. How Talia will fit into “The Dark Knight Rises” also relies heavily on Bane’s final role in the film. The prologue strongly hinted at the presence of a renewed League of Shadows with Bane taking the lead. That still leaves a lot of room for a leader above him, the one giving the orders. This is where Talia is most likely to fit in. So much of what we’ve seen of the film so far focuses on Bane and his role, but many of the shots come from just a few scenes. The trailer only gave the illusion of showing us a lot. That leaves the majority of the film unseen, and plenty of screen time left for Talia. On that note, even if Cotillard does end up portraying Talia, it really doesn’t spoil all that much. A character’s identity will never be a focal point of a story. Nolan is too intelligent of a storyteller to waste his final act on a plot development that people guessed a year out. Nothing that this column or any spoiler sites have uncovered has been essential enough to lessen “The Dark Knight Rises” as a movie. Did knowing about Dent’s Two-Face transformation in “The Dark Knight” ruin that movie? No. Expect the same with Talia. What would you like to see from Marion Cotillard in “The Dark Knight Rises”? Tracy Morgan is Fine, Tweets Tracy Morgan: ‘Superman Ran Into a Little Kryptonite’

A day after collapsing at Sundance — prompting his swift hospitalization and his publicist’s even swifter refutation of alcohol and drug speculation — Tracy Morgan has just tweeted that he’s recovering nicely. It was just that, well… Here, he can explain. For the record, “kryptonite” is clearly a euphemism for Melissa Leo, with whom Morgan was photographed (above, with screenwriter Ron Nyswaner) at a Creative Coalition event shortly before his incident. Must… retrieve… inhaler… Superman ran into a little kryptonite. The high altitude in Utah shook up this kid from Brooklyn. Bingham Ray, Indie Legend and Sundance Regular, Dead at 57

This is just terrible, terrible news: Former United Artists boss, October Films cofounder and recent appointee as S.F. Film Society executive director Bingham Ray has passed away following a series of strokes suffered while attending the Sundance Film Festival — an event from which his name and influence have been inseparable for more than two decades. He was 57. “It is with great sadness that the Sundance Institute acknowledges the passing of Bingham Ray, cherished independent film executive and most recently Executive Director of the San Francisco Film Society,” read a release just received at Movieline HQ. “On behalf of the independent film community here in Park City for the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and elsewhere, we offer our support and condolences to his family. Bingham’s many contributions to this community and business are indelible, and his legacy will not be soon forgotten.” No kidding. Ray commenced his film career in 1981 as a manager and programmer at New York’s defunct Bleecker Street Cinema, co-founding October Films a decade later with Jeff Lipsky. Initially set up shop for the purpose of distributing Mike Leigh’s Life is Sweet , October eventually distributed such renowned ’90s indies as Secrets and Lies , Breaking the Waves , Lost Highway , The Apostle and Ruby in Paradise , the 1993 Sundance Grand Jury Winner that further reinforced the festival as one of the industry’s foremost movie markets. The company’s DNA survives today Focus Features, which evolved from a series of mergers between Universal, Vivendi, and other distributors in the late ’90s/early ’00s. Ray had since occupied top spots at United Artists (where he’d helped shepherd Bowling to Columbine No Man’s Land to Oscar wins) and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment before veering into consulting and teaching, ultimately taking over the SFFS last year after its executive director Graham Leggat succumbed to cancer. He had also worked recently as an advisor to digital distributor SnagFilms, the Film Society at Lincoln Center (which recently opened its first-run Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center) and as a professor at New York University. Late last week in Park City, word of Ray’s condition spread quickly. He was first hospitalized Thursday in Provo, Utah; on Friday, one of his daughters told TheWrap and Ray had suffered a second, “more serious” stroke. The festival announced his passing just after noon local time. Bingham Ray is survived by his wife, Nancy, son Nick, daughters Annabel and Becca, and sisters Susan Clair and Deb Pope. He was one of the true good guys — supportive, insightful, broad-minded, funny and utterly devoted to films and the artists who made them. He will be mourned, missed, cherished and remembered for a long time to come. R.I.P., Bing. [Photo: Getty Images]

Spike Lee: “Hollyweird Studios Know Absolutely Nothing About Black People”

Man, Spike Lee sure has a potty mouth: Spike Lee had a message for the Sundance festival crowd at tonight’s world premiere of his new film, “Red Hook Summer”: “Please tell them that this is not a motherf**king sequel to ‘Do the Right Thing’!” That’s what people had been saying, mostly to fill the vacuum of information surrounding the movie. All anyone seemed to know was that it was set in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, that it followed a 13-year-old boy (newcomer Jules Brown) and his preacher grandfather (played by ‘The Wire’ veteran Clarke Peters), and that it featured the return of Mookie, Lee’s pizza-delivering character from his trailblazing 1989 movie about tensions boiling over in the summer heat. Lee, who took the stage for the post-screening Q&A draped in New York Giants regalia and immediately declared that the audience had “doubled the black population of Utah — maybe tripled it,” prefers to think of “Red Hook Summer” as “another installment in my great chronicles of Brooklyn,” a series that includes “She’s Gotta Have It,” Do the Right Thing,” “Clockers” and “Crooklyn.” “We never went to the studios with this film, I told you!” he shouted. “We said, ‘Were gonna do this motherf**king film ourselves and show it at Sundance…. This whole thing was planned out.” Of the studios, he added, “They know nothing about black people. And they gonna give me notes about what a young black boy and girl gonna do in Red Hook? F**k no! We had to do it ourselves!” Make sure y’all support Spike and his film! Source More On Bossip! Lindsay Lohan Sued By Some Crazy Dude

Lindsay Lohan has been staying out of trouble lately, and has even been praised by Judge Stephanie Sautner at probation hearings. Dare we say she’s turning it around? Incredibly, it looks like she is. The only allegations she faces these days (save for that tax mishap ) are the typical celeb fare – frivolous lawsuits from crazy people. According to court documents, Thomas A. Green is suing Lohan for $300,000 for “unfair business practices” and allegedly defrauding him in some online business deal. Green claims he is a former U.S. Marine and says he recently spent time in a homeless shelter due to a “depreciated stage of delusion and hallucinations.” Green believes he began corresponding with Lohan on Facebook on July 18, 2010, and makes references to both public Facebook and Twitter messages that the actress had posted in an effort raise awareness and funds for the disaster in the Gulf Coast. Green seems to claim was duped by Lohan and when he pressed her about her true intentions, he uncovered a conspiracy about the killing of Osama bin Laden . He goes on and on and on , but we’re just gonna stop right there, because this is going to be thrown out in about two seconds, and we have other things to talk about. Like the sweater she’s wearing above. Wowza. [Photo: Fame Pictures]
