Johnny Depp ‘Feels His Costumes’ In ‘Dark Shadows’

Costume designer Colleen Atwood takes MTV News inside the extravagant looks of Depp’s Barnabas Collins. By John Mitchell, with reporting by Amy Wilkinson Johnny Depp Photo: Bryan Bedder/Getty Images Costume designer Colleen Atwood has dressed Johnny Depp for eight films, five of which were directed by Tim Burton. The pair’s collaboration dates all the way back to 1990’s “Edward Scissorhands” and continues to this day with Burton’s latest flick, “Dark Shadows.” In the film, Depp plays centuries-old vampire Barnabas Collins, who is awakened in the late ’60s and tries to forge a relationship with his modern descendents. Atwood recently revealed to MTV News that while Depp is most certainly involved in the costuming process, he’s come to trust her enough to let her work her magic. “Johnny’s very open about what things are in the process, but he really lets people present things to him. He never really pushes at all,” Atwood said. “Sometimes he doesn’t even look in the mirror in his fittings. It’s so funny. It’s pretty amazing. People would be surprised, because I think they have this image of Johnny, because he’s so stylish always, but he really feels his costumes more than looks at them, and the movement and the feeling in them is really important.” For “Shadows,” Depp’s vampire is of the traditional sort. Unlike the sparkling vamps of “Twilight,” Barnabas cannot be exposed to sunlight. His courtship of Victoria Winters (Bella Heathcote) and his desire to keep his dark secret from her, however, forces him into the daylight. This presented a costuming issue for Atwood, who had to find interesting ways to conceal Depp’s skin from sun. “He plays a vampire who wouldn’t normally go out in the daytime, but we wanted him to be able to have outings, so I did two or three different hat shapes and we tried them once he got his hair and makeup on,” Atwood tells MTV News. “I also found these amazing hundred-year-old sunglasses, but they were too small … so I took them and had them copied. And the color of the sunglasses and the color of the hat and his costume coat, which was a really dark green, is one of our favorite combos we’ve come up with in our work together.” The three-time Oscar winner (for “Alice in Wonderland,” “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Chicago”) admits that Depp’s professionalism has been key to their successful collaboration, saying, “There’s a lot of trust there for both of us, so it’s a nice process, because … if he has an idea, it comes from someplace; it’s not just some wanky fashion idea.” If the early photos are any indication, Atwood has outdone herself yet again. Depp’s Barnabas looks simultaneously terrifying and alluring, and co-stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe Moretz and Helena Bonham Carter’s dark, high-style extravagance looks like a perfect fit for the Gothic world Burton has created. Or something. Case in point: On December 4, MTV2 will herald the return of one of the most beloved franchises in MTV history, “Yo! MTV Raps.” The show, which originally aired from 1988 to 1995, was the first major hip-hop program on a network, and it helped rap videos blow up globally as it gave some of the biggest stars of the day a forum to talk about their music with hosts Fab 5 Freddy, Ed Lover and Dr. Dre. The 30-minute retrospective, entitled, “Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts,” will air just after the first annual Sucker Free Awards , which premiere at 11 p.m. on December 4. The show’s original hosts will be on hand to discuss some of the clips that aired on the program, including interviews with the masterminds behind three of the all-time “Yo!” classics: A Tribe Called Quest’s “Scenario,” Geto Boys’ “My Mind’s Playing Tricks on Me” and Ice Cube’s “It Was a Good Day.” “It’s a great moment to be reconnected with ‘Yo!’ and examine the music that had a role in introducing hip-hop to music lovers globally,” former co-host Ed Lover said. “By looking back at these classic songs in hip-hop it becomes clear that hip-hop would inevitably transcend distance and generations.” Among the artists viewers will hear from on the special are: Q-Tip, Scarface, Ice Cube, Wiz Khalifa, DJ Khaled, Questlove, Busta Rhymes, Mac Miller, Machine Gun Kelly, Young Jeezy, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Phife, Fat Joe, Common, Mike Epps, Ice-T, Meek Mill, Tyga and Naughty by Nature. ‘Breaking Dawn’ Fans Travel Cross-Country For Midnight Premiere

‘We came all the way from North Dakota to come to a New York premiere of ‘Twilight,’ ” fan John Myhre says. By Kevin P. Sullivan Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn, Part I” Photo: Summit Entertainment Everyone knew that the premiere of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” would be an emotional journey for fans of the vampire movies, but for some at the midnight premiere last night in New York City, it was a literal journey across the country. “We came all the way from North Dakota to come to a New York premiere of ‘Twilight,’ ” die-hard fan John Myhre said. John wasn’t the only fan who traveled from afar to see the film. Another group of fans came from Texas just to see “Breaking Dawn” at midnight, before everyone else. For one fan, the hype could not properly prepare her for the film, which went beyond what she was expecting. “I thought it was great. It was the best thing ever. It totally exceeded my expectations,” she said. So everyone loved it, but what was the best part? The movie boasts three major moments — the wedding, the honeymoon and the birth — and fans were split on which they loved the most. “The love scene was beautiful. You would love it,” one fan said. Susan Dolan saw similarities to her own life in “Break Dawn.” “Charlie was walking Bella down the aisle. I was like, ‘That’s totally my dad,’ ” she said. Dante Delva went a different route and chose a key scene between Jacob and his pack. “My favorite part of the movie has to be when Jacob stood up to Sam. Even though you have the authority, I have the free will to do whatever I want,” he said. Several fans said that one showing was not nearly enough for them. “I actually have tickets to three more showings, so I’ll be back,” Alanna Foxx said. We all still have one more “Twilight” installment to go, and the Twi-hards will be there to the bitter end. “I am looking forward to see ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2.’ I will be at the midnight premiere again,” Carla Suarez said. REVIEW: Rid of Me Plays Rough — And is All the Better for It

Rid of Me , James Westby’s scrappy dramedy about marriage, divorce and finding your inner punk rocker, begins with an act that makes flipping someone off or putting a brick through a windshield look passé. It takes place in a grocery store, and is the kind of ballsy, juvenile and legitimately shocking gesture that indie films used to chase after because studio features would never dare. These days the division between the two realms is fuzzy at best, but this film, which premiered earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival, recalls when a little roughness in form and content was part of the charm.

Liam Neeson ‘Eager’ To See ‘Dark Knight Rises’

But the actor, whose Ra’s Al Ghul is rumored to be in the threequel, says he doesn’t have ‘a f—ing clue’ about the film. By Kevin P. Sullivan Liam Neeson Photo: MTV News Whether Liam Neeson will reprise his villainous role of Ra’s Al Ghul for the final film of Christopher Nolan’s trilogy remains one of the biggest question marks hovering over “The Dark Knight Rises.” Rumors fill Internet forums, hyping the villain’s potential return, but we’ll let you decide if you want to seek out the clues. If you ask Neeson about “Rises,” he might act a little confused. When MTV News sat down with the Academy Award-nominated actor to discuss his upcoming film “The Grey,” Neeson’s role in “Batman Begins” slipped his mind for a second. “You’re throwing me for a loop there,” Neeson said after a long pause. “That’s right. I was in ‘Batman.’ I trained him,” he added in his best Ra’s voice with a laugh. While it’s still up in the air whether he’ll make an appearance, Neeson has already appeared in the form of a voice-over in the trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises,” which recycled some of his lines from “Batman Begins.” One of the hints that has been repeatedly dropped by people involved with the film is that the conclusion to the trilogy brings everything full-circle, perhaps referencing returning elements from “Batman Begins.” With the series drawing to a close, Neeson said he looks back fondly on the first two Batman films and is looking forward to the finale. “Chris Nolan’s made wonderful films, very rich, dark and complex, especially [‘The Dark Knight’]. Of course, it was cloaked in tragedy,” Neeson said, referencing the death of Heath Ledger. But when it comes to “Rises,” Neeson claims to be completely in the dark. “I’m eager to see this one,” he said. “I haven’t a f—ing clue what it’s about.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dark Knight Rises.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Sweet Dreams Are Made of Britney Spears

“Sweet Dreams” are made of Britney … or maybe nightmares? For her Circus tour in 2009, the star made a provocative music video for Marilyn Manson’s cover of the Eurythmics hit, but it was never released, until now. Mouthing words to one of Manson’s signature songs while parading around in what looks like an S&M-style orgy of sorts, this is Spears as you’ve never seen her. This is dark stuff … possibly NSFW. But if you’re into this sort of thing – a scantily-clad Britney grinding on people and objects – you’ll likely enjoy it. Britney Spears – Sweet Dreams (Interlude)

Kristen Stewart on Breaking Dawn: Reflections on Bella Swan Milestones

No offense to Edward, Jacob and their respective team members, but Breaking Dawn is all about Bella. In the epic Twilight conclusion, Kristen Stewart’s character is seen as a newlywed, a newly-turned vampire and as a pregnant woman. Going through all of those changes with a girl she’s played for so long was not easy for Stewart, who feels like a part of herself will always be entwined with Bella Swan. “I’m pretty wrapped up in her,” Kristen tells Movie Fanatic. “If you’re the type of girl to identify with Bella then you’re just kind of on her. So it’s really hard for me.” “I genuinely had to justify every decision she made the whole way through.” Breaking Dawn Wedding Trailer Among the many milestones crammed into the first part of Breaking Dawn (in theaters this Friday) is Bella’s wedding to Edward, played by Robert Pattinson. “I had a million different things going through my head,” she recalled of walking down the aisle. “What I kept telling myself was, “Stop, stop, stop. Like just do it. Actually have this experience because you’re just about to ruin it.” Of co-stars Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, she says, “I can’t imagine what this film would have been if I didn’t have really, really solid and growing relationships with them.” “When you work with people like that, you give so much, you’re so comfortable and you can do no wrong, and so they’ve got you. I think we all just got along, and it shows.” Visit Movie Fanatic now for their full interview with Kristen Stewart …

Nikki Reed Compares Her Wedding To ‘Breaking Dawn’

‘What Bella says to Charlie is exactly what I said to my dad,’ ‘Twilight’ star reveals about her wedding to ‘American Idol’ alum Paul McDonald. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Ashley Greene, Kristen Stewart and Nikki Reed in “Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment For the legions of “Twilight” fans, the year’s biggest wedding is only a few days away, with “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” hitting theaters Friday. But for Nikki Reed , who plays Rosalie in the films, her biggest wedding took place about a month ago when she married former “American Idol” contestant Paul McDonald on October 16. While promoting the film, Reed has had to field a number a questions about similarities between Bella’s wedding in the film and her own real-life wedding. “People have been asking, just because I just got married, ‘What’s the difference between your wedding and Bella …?’ — the whole comparing thing,” Reed told MTV News. It wasn’t until Reed actually saw the finished film that she discovered a similarity between the two weddings. “I saw the movie last night for the first time, and what Bella says to Charlie is exactly what I said to my dad right when we were going to start walking down,” she revealed. “She says, ‘Don’t let me fall,’ and I was wearing these high shoes and walking down this cobblestone hill, not a smooth glide to the altar. I kept saying to my dad, ‘Please, don’t let me fall. I’ll just take my shoes off. I don’t need to walk in shoes.’ He’s like, ‘It’s going to be OK.’ ” With her wedding came the question of whether Reed will change her surname to “McDonald.” Reed said she likes the idea for her personal name, but wasn’t sure if she’ll change her stage name. “I don’t know what I’m going to do. I feel like there’s something really nice about that, changing your name,” Reed said. “I think it’s sort of traditional, and I’ve never been a super-traditional gal, but I think it’s nice.” She did express some concern over the name and referenced her husband’s own problems with it. “He told me that he didn’t think anyone was going to marry him for that exact reason [of his last name],” Reed said. “I think it’s kind of nice, though. ‘McDonald’ is a good name. It’s strong. It feels strong and beefy.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
