But the actor will be doing more than just walking the red carpet in the near future: he’s ready to get back to work. For his next role, Douglas will take on the flamboyant musician, Liberace. “I’ve been watching a lot of tapes of him,” he told People . “He wasn’t the greatest dancer nor the greatest singer, but he was a great pianist and entertainer.” Douglas says he’ll take piano lessons for the film, which will likely be released next year some time. ‘People are saying how bad it is without having seen anything,’ he tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Seth Rogen Photo: MTV News Seth Rogen knew there was nowhere to hide. When he and writing partner Evan Goldberg took on the task of reinventing “Green Hornet” in a post-“Dark Knight” world, there was bound to be mud slung in their direction. Perhaps, though, he didn’t think there’d be so much of it. As Rogen himself put it earlier this year, the production faced “every possible obstacle … to the point that it really just got ridiculous,” including major recastings and the departure of director Stephen Chow (“Kung Fu Hustle”) during pre-production. Then, once filming was complete, Sony decided to convert the film into 3-D, then pushed the release from audience-friendly dates in summer and December to the perceived cinematic wasteland of January. As every snag became public, websites and fans seemed to turn against the project. “Green Hornet,” the Internet decided, was nothing but squandered potential, a train wreck, something to avoid at all costs. And then a funny thing happened: People started to see the film, and they liked it. A lot. All the while, Rogen and Goldberg sat back and watched the scrum. They had a feeling things would turn around. “It’s something that Evan would constantly have to remind me of throughout the process, in that this is kind of exactly what we thought would happen,” Rogen told MTV News recently. “From the second we thought of doing a movie like this, I remember talking about it like, ‘Everyone’s going to think it’s going to be insane and terrible and we’ll just have to keep our heads down and make it, and then it’ll come out and then people will slowly see that we weren’t nuts and that it was actually a good idea.’ ” That’s not to say all the Web-based hate didn’t get to him. There were times, it seems, that Rogen had to restrain himself from chucking his laptop out the window, or at least from staying offline for a while. “As you get wrapped up in it, as there’s two years of time where people are saying how bad it is, without having seen anything, it does get frustrating and, ultimately, just disappointing, more than anything. You look at these outlets that, as a comic book nerd, I kind of respected at times and thought were interesting voices just say things that are insane and completely uninformed and uneducated and based on no reality whatsoever, and it’s kind of like, ‘Oh, that’s disappointing. I thought these guys were cool.’ But they’re not. They’re just like everybody else.” Now, however, with the film hitting theaters Friday and praise coming from all corners for its entertaining balance between high-octane action and the sort of laughs familiar from Rogen’s earlier comedies, the guy is feeling good. Not that he’s one to brag. “It is nice that people actually have to base their assumptions on the movie now and not just what they think the movie is going to be like,” he laughed. Besides the exciting news that Wu-Tang Clan member and martial arts-aficionado RZA’ s Kung Fu film The Man with the Iron Fist was actually beginning production in China, there hasn’t been much to report on the project. The fact that co-writer Eli Roth stepped on as producer along with Quentin Tarantino seemed like a forgone conclusion and the cast of Lucy Liu, Daniel Wu and Byron Mann more or less made sense. But finally, a bombshell of sorts: Russell Crowe appears confirmed to star in the film.

‘It’s about his acting skills in this one,’ she says, downplaying the actor’s shirtlessness in the thriller. By Eric Ditzian Lily Collins Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage When it comes to his upcoming thriller, “Abduction,” Taylor Lautner has spoken enthusiastically about the intense training he endured — including boxing and motorcycle riding — and his excitement for what he terms the film’s “amazing” story. All good stuff, no doubt, but what many of you really want to know about his first major role outside the “Twilight” franchise is one thing: Just how much shirt-free, ab-proud time is the 18-year-old going to have onscreen? Hate to dash dreams, but — despite those tantalizing set pics that popped up on the Web last summer — the answer is: not much at all. “It’s not about that!” co-star Lily Collins laughed in a recent interview. “It’s about his acting skills in this one. I feel everyone is going to be surprised to see how much he’s grown. This movie is not about that aspect of him. It’s very, very, very minimal. He brings so much more than that. I feel people are going to be blown away.” Collins — who MTV News tapped as one of our 11 for ’11 and who, like Lautner, is about take on a wildly popular book franchise as the star of the “Mortal Instruments” series — told us she learned a ton from watching how the “Twilight” star interacted with his fans during the “Abduction” shoot. “I would watch the way he deals with his fans. It’s incredible,” she told us. “We’d be shooting at nights where we finish at 7 in the morning, and one night, we had 600 fans in the middle of nowhere in Pittsburgh waiting outside, and it was probably almost 5 in the morning, and he went out and signed every single autograph. He was always there to be with his fans and to make sure they knew he appreciated them. “I watched that and I took note that it’s always important to give back and to make sure the people that support you know that you support them,” Collins added. “He’s so humble in dealing with everyone that looks up to him.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Abduction.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

Coen brothers Western hauls in $4.5 million on Friday. By Mawuse Ziegbe Matt Damon in “True Grit” Photo: Paramount Pictures “True Grit” fended off “Fockers” and took names at the Friday box office. The Coen brothers’ critically acclaimed, dust-kicking adventure scored the top spot at the start of its third weekend in theaters, pulling in $4.5 million. The figure nudges the total estimated haul of the rollicking Western drama — which features performances from Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges and newcomer Hailee Steinfield — to just under $100 million. “Grit” star Barry Pepper has attributed to the filmmakers’ stunning attention to detail, explaining to MTV News why the film stands out from modern Wild West fare. “So many of them have so many anachronisms that kind of ruin it for me and pull me out of the period, whereas the Coen brothers are so authentic and they have such a precise vision,” he told MTV News at the film’s premiere. “And the dialogue [in ‘True Grit’] is extraordinary, which is plucked straight from the source of Charles Portis’ novel. So, yeah, this one’s a very special one for me.” Hot on the heels of “Grit” is the familial laugh-getter “Little Fockers,” which raked in $4.2 million for a second-place finish. The latest installment in the Fockers saga — the all-star gang of Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand returns for more awkward fun — has snapped up $114 million since its holiday release. The Nicholas Cage-starring, witch-battling, ghoul-dodging romp “Season of the Witch” — which was ushered into theaters with a flurry of less-than-encouraging reviews — debuted in third place. The flick snagged $3.7 million at the Friday box office. The Disney digital adventure “Tron Legacy” continues to maintain a presence in the box-office top five. The sci-fi sequel added $2.7 million to its total haul, which now stands at around $140 million. Gwyneth Paltrow’s onscreen turn at the mic, “Country Strong,” kicked off the weekend in fifth place. The flick, which also stars Garrett Hedlund and fellow music and Hollywood double-dippers Leighton Meester and Tim McGraw, made $2.5 million. Everything you need to know, from how Gwyneth Paltrow prepared for the film to how Britney Spears inspired it. By Kara Warner Gwyneth Paltrow in “Country Strong” Photo: Sony Pictures Although it may seem as though we’ve been talking about Gwyneth Paltrow and her turn as a washed-up country singer in “Country Strong” forever, the film, which also stars Tim McGraw, Garrett Hedlund and Leighton Meester, has only been in a few select theaters until now. Luckily for those eager to see it, the film finally opened in wide release Friday (January 7). To celebrate the occasion and properly prepare moviegoers for some boot-stompin’, here’s everything you need to know about “Country Strong.” Back in December 2009, it was announced that Paltrow would be shooting a “country film” called “Love Don’t Let Me Down,” produced by none other than former “Spider-Man” Tobey Maguire. At the beginning of 2010, production headed to Nashville , the home of country music, where the locals were treated to first listens of the country stylings of Hedlund, Meester and Paltrow, all of whom actually sing their own songs in the movie. When MTV News caught up with Paltrow at the beginning of the summer, she was in the thick of promotion for “Iron Man 2,” but she revealed that her hesitation to sing country music didn’t compare to the nervousness she felt concerning the amount of skin she bared for the role. Toward the end of the summer, news trickled out regarding the film’s title change from the wordy “Love Don’t Let Me Down” to “Country Strong,” which is also the title of one of the songs Paltrow’s character, Kelly Canter, sings in the film. In September we got our eyes on the first full-length trailer for the film. Then in November Paltrow made headlines in Nashville once again when she bravely graced the stage at the Country Music Awards and performed “Country Strong” live . From there began the big promotional push in anticipation of the film’s release. We chatted with the stars at the film’s press day and found out key details about Meester’s stage fright and how she had trained for the role . Paltrow revealed that if she ever puts out an album, it will be a little bit country and a little bit Cee Lo . We also learned from director Shana Feste that Paltrow’s character’s troubled, down-on-her-luck edge was inspired by Britney Spears’ very public meltdown . On December 15 the stars lit up the red carpet at the Los Angeles premiere , and shortly thereafter MTV News unveiled an exclusive clip of “Gossip Girl” Meester belting out her big showstopper . After that, all we could do was wait for January 7 for “Country Strong” to arrive in wide release. Check out everything we’ve got on “Country Strong.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . The Disney star was honored with trophies in the Favorite TV Guest Star and Favorite Family TV Movie categories. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato (file) Photo: Jason LaVeris/ WireImage Demi Lovato may be out of the spotlight as she seeks treatment, but that doesn’t mean that fans have forgotten about her. On Wednesday night at the People’s Choice Awards , the teen actress/singer won two awards. Lovato took home the Favorite TV Guest Star trophy for her cameo appearance on the ABC medical soap “Grey’s Anatomy,” while her hit Disney film, “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam,” also was a winner in the Favorite Family TV Movie category. A rep for Lovato had no official comment regarding the Disney star’s honors. There is no word on when Lovato will be released from treatment, but a new season of her hit Disney show, “Sonny With a Chance,” is set to kick off this month. Right now, Disney plans to move forward with the season and focus on the show within the show, “So Random,” until its star is ready to return to work. “This allows her the time she needs to get well, without distraction or pressure,” a Disney Channel spokesperson told Variety in November. “Again, we extend our ongoing support to Demi and her family as she works to overcome personal issues.” Lovato is still slated to hit the road for a solo tour sometime this year to promote her forthcoming album. She recently talked with The Associated Press about her plan to keep ticket prices low for the tour. “I have best friends that aren’t in the industry and are dealing with just buying groceries and things like that, so I want to do my part,” she said. Before she entered treatment, Lovato discussed her new music with MTV News, sharing that she hoped to go in a more urban direction with it. “I would love for Drake to be on the album,” she said. “It’s kind of like a pipe dream. I would also like to do a song with Trey Songz. It would be hot!” Want to congratulate Demi? Send her a message in the comments.
