Superhero flick could have been a Quentin Tarantino movie starring Jack Black or T.I. By Eric Ditzian Photo: DC Comics “The ring, it chose you,” Ryan Reynolds is told in the new “Green Lantern” trailer . That is true. People ‘s Sexiest Man Reynolds did finally land the role of Hal Jordan in the DC Comics adaptation. But the path that led to his casting was a circuitous one. Did you know Jack Black was once considered for the part? That the flick was once set to shoot in Australia? That Quentin Tarantino was actually offered the director’s job? Oh, what could have been … Kevin Smith, for example, was once approached to helm a Green Lantern movie. Clearly, that would have been a more comedic take on the property. As would the installment that Black was eyeing. “It would have been a comedy, and I don’t know, maybe they didn’t want to go that way with the character,” Black told MTV News back in 2007. “You don’t see a lot of the superheroes as comedies. Batman, Superman, Spider-man — they’re all pretty straight-up. I was going to be capturing bad guys with green, giant prophylactics. Some funny stuff.” As part of a potential Justice League film, the character was rumored to have been offered to everyone from Common to T.I. to Tyrese Gibson. And for a solo flick, “Everwood” creator Greg Berlanti was once tapped to direct, while “Watchmen” helmer Zack Snyder and Tarantino were approached for the gig. “I was offered the ‘Green Lantern,’ ” Tarantino revealed to MTV News. “Not since it’s been a script, but just like, ‘Hey we own the “Green Lantern.” Would you like it?’ ” By early ’09, Warner Bros. had announced that “Green Lantern” would hit theaters on December 17, 2010. Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”) would direct and the film would shoot in Australia with a reported budget of $150 million. But who would be Jordan? Early rumors touched on names like Ryan Gosling, Brian Austin Green , “Gossip Girl” star Matthew Settle and “Star Trek” stars Chris Pine and Anton Yelchin . The three front-runners eventually became Bradley Cooper, Justin Timberlake and Reynolds . “I did get a chance to try out for it, which was amazing to even get a chance,” Cooper said later. “Ryan Reynolds got it — who, by the way, if I was directing the movie, I would cast him. He’s perfect. ‘Green Lantern’ Trailer, Shot By Shot

Get a sneak peek of Ryan Reynolds in all his emerald glory — not to mention the baddies he’s up against. By Brian Warmoth Ryan Reynolds in the “Green Lantern” trailer Photo: Warner Bros. In just two and a half minutes, the first “Green Lantern” trailer introduces exactly what kind of superhero Ryan Reynolds is going to portray onscreen, with “Gossip Girl” leading lady Blake Lively staring him down the whole way. In the sneak peek, Hal Jordan (Reynolds) gets dressed, gets rid of his pants and slips on his ring to get redressed in the famous emerald uniform that signifies his new status in the Green Lantern Corps. Witty banter, the Planet Oa , Mark Strong as Sinestro and Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond all make appearances in the series of clips, which leave no doubt that director Martin Campbell has set out to attack the world of the Lanterns in epic fashion. 0:00-0:14 : Reynolds wastes no time hiding his superhero physique and gets a rude awakening from his first nemesis — the alarm clock. He also shows how gentlemanly Jordan is in this film by rushing out the door and offering tap water to the damsel he’s leaving behind in his bed. 0:00-0:24 : Jordan and Carol Ferris (Lively) establish the tension they’re taking with them into the air with a quick spat about his tardiness before a flight. This provides the context for Reynolds’ most memorable “Green Lantern” line yet: “Let’s get these pants off and fly some planes.” 0:25-0:35 : We get to see Hal in his element flying a jet. He thinks to himself that anything feels possible; of course, that comes just as he’s forced to eject. 0:41-0:48 : Hal Ponders aloud that there’s something good waiting for him over the horizon, and that thought immediately materializes Abin Sur, who proceeds to crash into the Earth. Green Lantern mythos junkies all know that this leads to the passing of the ring. 0:55-1:20 : Abin Sur shows his face briefly before the WB logo reminds us all who’s making this film. It generously passes the spotlight back to Reynolds, however, as Sur explains the responsibility Jordan now has to protect the universe. 1:23-1:28 : Our first shot of Oa appears, as does Sinestro, as the glimpse of Green Lantern society illustrates what Hal’s going to be getting himself into. 1:30-1:40 : A few humbling moments featuring Hal Jordan getting roughed up contrast with a moment of triumph as he summons a big green fist to lay down some justice. 1:41-1:50 : Dr. Hector Hammond debuts, looking as normal as you’re going to see him for the remainder of the trailer. Hal flies around in space briefly, and his fellow Lantern, Kilowog, gets a quick growl in to remind everyone who you don’t talk back to if you serve in the Green Lantern Corps. 1:50-1:54 : Dr. Hammond shows up again looking way uglier than before. Jordan gets the drop on him, but Hammond’s head starts getting awfully large. 1:55-2:05 : Carol tells Hal that he has the ability to overcome fear. This line is immediately followed by a falling helicopter, screaming and Dr. Hammond getting even more veiny and Star Trek alien-looking than he was seconds earlier. 2:04-2:18 : Reynolds summons his inner Van Wilder for a moment to expose himself (in costume) to his friend Thomas Kalmaku (Taika Waititi). Kalmaku gets a little choked up, and Hal simply responds, “I know, right?!” The Green Lantern emblem makes another appearance as Hal says he wants to go look for trouble. 2:19-2:25 : The final seconds close with Hal flying through space full-throttle with the Green Lantern oath being recited in the background. It’s just a trailer, though, so we only get to hear “In brightest day, in darkest night” before everything goes black and the year 2011 slides into view to let us all know when this movie comes out. By Jocelyn Vena Photo: MTV News Fans have been clamoring for information about the Catherine Hardwicke-helmed, Amanda Seyfried-starring “Red Riding Hood.” And when the film hits theaters next year, Seyfried promises it will be nothing like the story they heard as children. This tale is a lot, lot darker. ” ‘Red Riding Hood’ is a classic fairy tale that we all know, and what fans can expect from this version of the story is that it’s basically just a jumping-off point. Catherine Hardwicke has just completely turned this story into something edgy and gothic and dark, and she’s clearly somebody that’s very capable of turning something, everything into an extraordinary world, as we’ve seen before,” Seyfried said about the film in an interview with “The Seven,” which premiered a trailer for the flick Tuesday (November 16). “And also there’s a romance aspect to the film, which isn’t in the fairy tale … a lot of romance and a lot of danger,” she continued. “There’s a wolf at the center of the story, and it’s exciting ’cause it’s a whodunit.” Sure, the fairy tale that the flick is based on is plenty scary, but Seyfried reveals that whatever frightening elements were there to begin with have gotten much more frightening under Hardwicke’s supervision, and thanks to a cast that includes Gary Oldman and Julie Christie . “Fans will be surprised by the tone of the film,” she explained. “Catherine just completely throws it into this dark world, and it’s a little scarier than it was meant to be when it was written. Fans give MTV News a variety of ways the troubled starlet can make a comeback. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lindsay Lohan arrives at court Friday Photo: Robyn Beck/ Getty Images Between the multiple jail and rehab stints, alcohol-monitoring devices and a dearth of high-profile onscreen roles, this year appears to have been especially trying for Lindsay Lohan . On Friday, the actress was sent to jail for the second time in three months (she was released the same day) after she admitted to failing a court-ordered drug test. Lohan will reportedly don a SCRAM bracelet for the second time this year and is due to head back to court on October 22. Her legal drama has all but eclipsed her film career and many wonder if Lohan can still attract fans with her work as ably as she can hog headlines with her antics. On Sunday (September 26), just days after her most recent jail stint, MTV News went to directly to the fans in New York’s Times Square to ask how they think Lohan can revive her career. “[She could make a comeback] if she actually would just learn from something and … take something seriously, and not act like … the world revolves around her and she has these special privileges that no one else has,” Lauren Suitors said. She pointed out that many are able to overcome bad decisions after they’ve hit rock bottom. “Other people have gone to jail and they come out and they’re just fine, but she just keeps making the same mistakes again.” “I really think that she probably needs to revamp herself and prove to everyone that she’s capable of being a good actress and cleaning up her life, ’cause, as of now, she’s kind of gone into a downward spiral,” Jenny Phillips observed. Phillips said Lohan should head back to rehab and put in the work when it comes to a comeback because she is ultimately a talented star. “She’s a legitimate actress when she’s not all drugged up and stuff.” Sarah Leigh said Lohan’s issues stem from her substance abuse problems , an observation the actress largely agrees with, and suggested a single step toward getting her act together: “Stop taking drugs!” Evoking the “All publicity is good publicity” philosophy, Mel Dummett said that Lohan’s high-profile high jinks will probably boost for enfeebled status as a box-office draw. “I think this is actually going to revive her career ’cause she’s been in the news,” she said. “Any celebrity site you go to she’s covering the whole thing.” Tramel Ulysses agrees that she should “keep doing what she do” and that, ultimately, everybody makes mistakes. “I don’t think she should be judged because everybody mess up, people do wrong things, people say they civilized but people also do bad things,” Ulysses noted. “Everybody have their bad days.” Sebastian Moore said Lohan should look to a higher power to guide her through the drama. “Just try to reach out to Oprah and let her solve everything,” Moore said. “That’s what I would do.” How do you think Lindsay Lohan can revive her career? Infinitely worse than you dared to hope it wouldn’t be, You Again dumbfounded and then defeated me. That’s a pretty limited spectrum of response, and yet I left the film feeling like I’d just crossed the Gobe with four actresses on my back. The shock is still too great to talk about the fifth — Betty White — except to say that, although like the rest of the free world I am glad that she’s back in heavy rotation, someone needs to lay down the rules of fair use, and penalties must be called when she is deployed to such pitiable effect.

The loathed-and-beloved pilot fish of celebrity culture, paparazzi are front of brain lately: Entourage star Adrian Grenier’s doc Teenage Paparazzi is coming to cable, and the film about Ron “Brando Broke My Jaw” Galella, Smash His Camera , hits DVD next month. But no film might pin down the dynamic like Being Michael Madsen , which is close to being a paparazzo in film form. Which is to say it’s annoying, thoughtless, transparently full of crap and morally confused.

According to UsMagazine.com the “Jackass 3-D” star wed his longtime girlfriend, Naomi Nelson, on Friday. Life & Style reports that Knoxville popped the question to Nelson just days ago, with a 2.5-carat engagement ring from Los Angeles’ Platt Boutique Jewelry. The nuptials follow the arrival of the couple’s first child together. Knoxville and Nelson welcomed son Rocko Akira Clapp last December. Knoxville, whose real name is Phillip John Clapp, also has a teenage daughter, Madison, from his marriage to ex Melanie Clapp. Despite his career of pulling off outrageous stunts, Knoxville and new wife have mostly maintained a low profile, and the actor has said Nelson keeps him calm. “I’m lucky enough to be with someone, and I am happy,” he told Knoxville.com. “I feel very lucky. I’m not out running around all the time. I don’t party as much as I used to. I’m not partying constantly and constantly battling myself. I’m with someone, and we are very, very happy.” Knoxville’s next move is decidedly more outlandish than making it legal with his ladyfriend. The actor appears in the latest installment of the prank-packed hit series, “Jackass 3-D,” which lands in theaters on October 15. Even though he and “Jackass” pals like Steve-O and Bam Margera have been staging elaborate shenanigans for years, Knoxville revealed they still shot tons of footage for the upcoming flick. “Man, we filmed so much stuff. So much great stuff got left out of the film because we just overshot,” Knoxville told MTV News earlier this month. He explained the cutting-room bits will be available on a DVD set to hit shelves by the holiday season. “That’ll be in ‘[Jackass] 3.5,’ coming out at Christmas.” Leave well-wishes for the couple below!
