‘X-Men: First Class’ Close To Casting Alice Eve As Emma Frost

Rosamund Pike was also rumored to be up for the role. By Eric Ditzian Alice Eve Photo: Marc Stamas/Getty Images With “X-Men: First Class” set for a summer 2011 release date, we’re at a place in the film’s development when the casting rumors sprout like weeds in the cracks on Hollywood studio lots. Just a few weeks ago, Internet whispers had it that Rosamund Pike (“Surrogates”) was up for the role of telepathic mutant Emma Frost. But now it seems Marvel has found its blond mind-reader: Alice Eve. The 24-year-old British actress had her breakout turn earlier this year in “She’s Out of My League” opposite Jay Baruchel and is now in negotiations to join the growing “X-Men” cast, according to Deadline Hollywood . MTV News’ requests for comment were not returned by Eve’s representatives as of press time. Directed by Matthew Vaughn (“Kick-Ass”), “X-Men: First Class” has already lined up Michael Fassbender (“Inglourious Basterds”) as Magneto, James McAvoy as Professor X and Benjamin Walker (“Flags of Our Fathers”) as Hank “Beast” McCoy. Eve becomes the second actress to play Frost onscreen, following Tahyna Tozzi’s turn as the character near the end of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” In Marvel comics, Frost was originally a villain named the White Queen, who joined up with the X-Men and became a teacher at their school for mutant children. In addition to the “X-Men” casting news, Deadline also confirms that Tommy Lee Jones will be in “Captain America.” But now we know the specific role: Colonel Chester Phillips, the supervisor of the Super Solider program. Jones joins Chris Evans, who’s playing the captain, as well as Hugo Weaving, Neal McDonough and Stanley Tucci. The film is slated for a July 2011 release, just over a month after “X-Men” drops. ‘Toy Story 3’ On Track To Become Pixar’s Biggest Film Ever

‘Finding Nemo’ is company’s current record holder. By Eric Ditzian Buzz Lightyear and Woody in “Toy Story 3” Photo: Disney/Pixar “Toy Story 3” is already a record-breaker for Pixar. The third installment of the adventures of Woody and his playtime buddies opened with the animation house’s biggest opening weekend, its $110.3 million besting “The Incredibles” by almost $40 million. Inflation and 3-D ticket prices notwithstanding, “Toy Story 3” has blown past its original incarnation in just two full weekends and figures to ascend to the upper tier of Pixar releases by next weekend So where will “Toy Story 3” end up in the Pixar ranks when its theatrical run comes to a close? The company’s current record holder is “Finding Nemo,” which netted $339.7 million in 2003 without the benefit of premium ticket prices. As things at the cinema stand now, though, those CGI fishies are about to lose their top Pixar spot to some 3-D toys. ” ‘Toy Story 3’ will have no problems at all surpassing ‘Finding Nemo’ to become Pixar’s top-grossing film ever,” said Gitesh Pandya, editor of BoxOfficeGuru.com. “[It] might even join the list of top 10 global blockbusters of all time.” For that to happen, “Toy Story 3” would need to cross the $400 million threshold, and to reach such a lofty goal, the movie will have to continue to attract repeat viewers. This week, two films that could eat into the “Toy Story” audience — “Eclipse” and “The Last Airbender” — arrive on the scene. “Eclipse” drops on Wednesday and should easily dominate the box office. The next day, “The Last Airbender,” which is based on the popular Nickelodeon cartoon series, opens across North America. With kids and their parents headed off to take in these fresh films, will repeat viewership for “Toy Story” plunge? “The only thing standing in the way of ‘Toy Story’ becoming the biggest film of the summer is ‘Eclipse,’ ” said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “These bloodsuckers have serious box-office bite. To say the sequel expanded the brand after the original is an understatement. The real question is: has this series hit a tipping point? Usually, by the third film in a franchise, grosses diminish exponentially. Not so with fanatical franchises like ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Star Wars,’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Twilight.’ They don’t follow traditional box-office patterns. But that said, I do believe the fanbase has hit its glass ceiling, and that the threequel will perform very similarly to the sequel.” That would put “Eclipse” at slightly under the $300 million mark, whereas “Toy Story” could top that by as much as $100 million. Now lest you think “Toy Story 3” is simply benefiting from pricey 3-D tickets, note the case of 2009’s “Up.” That critically lauded Oscar nominee, presented in three dimensions (albeit before the current “Avatar”-induced 3-D craze), still could not unseat “Nemo.” For “Toy Story 3″ to have such a good chance of becoming Pixar’s #1 speaks not only to ticket prices but to the appeal of the film itself, which many have suggested is the best in the three-picture series. ” ‘Toy Story 3’ has captured the magic of Pixar in a blockbuster sequel — a potent combination,” Bock said. “And let’s not forget the ancillary merchandizing markets that have toy aisles abuzz and practically barren. No one can touch that type of overall domination.” Yet despite its popularity, the movie might not sell as many tickets as “Nemo.” Still, we count dollars, not tickets, and when it comes to the former, “Toy Story” is going to pull in record-breaking numbers. “With James Cameron not having a film this year, Woody and pals may even be the box-office champs of 2010,” said Pandya. "November Days" Filmed By Bike, Distributed By Bike

Photo still from Field Guide to November Days. “Field Guide to November Days” is a new film by Portland filmmakers Mary DeFreese and Nick Peterson that I really want to see. Not just because its two protagnists live a biking life (and the directors shot most of the film by bike). It’s also because DeFreese and Peterson are taking their 10-city film tour to show the movie at art film theaters, by bicycles. They started on June 10 from Vancouver, B.C. and will end in San Diego July 10. “There have been some scary things,” said DeFreese of the cycling film tour thus far. “In Tacoma, I thought someone … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Trey Songz Honors Prince At BET Awards With ‘Purple Rain’ Verse

Singer kicks off performance with latest single, ‘Yo Side of the Bed.’ By Hillary Crosley Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Trey Songz kicked off Prince’s Lifetime Achievement Award tribute at the BET Awards on Sunday (June 27) with his performance of “Yo Side of the Bed” that bled into “Purple Rain.” In a purple button-up, black slacks and vest, Trey sang his recent hit “Yo Side of the Bed” atop a stage bathed in purple lights. The track’s video, featuring Keri Hilson as a military officer and Trey as her mourning husband after she’s killed in the line of duty, played in the background on large screens. During the performance, Trey gave a shout-out to all who’ve lost a special someone. “This song goes out to anybody watching this tonight,” Trey said to an audience of swaying women. “I feel your pain.” The singer then launched into the first verse of Prince’s 1984 classic “Purple Rain” from the film of the same name. As Trey strained to hit falsetto notes almost on his knees, the camera cut to Prince himself seated in the audience looking on. “Prince, I don’t know where you are, but you inspire us all,” Trey said as a screen showed the message “Pray for our soldiers and their families” behind him. Earlier in the evening, the Virginia native won the award for Best Male R&B Artist and brought his date, his mother, April Tucker, onstage with him to accept his trophy. Tucker is extremely proud of her eldest son and described him as “a regular guy with a God-given voice and talent for writing.” Following the awards show, BET will debut Trey’s documentary “My Moment,” which follows the singer during Jay-Z’s recent Blueprint 3 Tour. ‘Inception’ Director Christopher Nolan Says ‘Batman 3’ Script Is Under Way

‘It’s based on a story that myself and David Goyer have written,’ filmmaker says about ‘The Dark Knight’ sequel. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Christopher Nolan Photo: MTV News The arrival of “The Dark Knight” in 2008 reminded cinema enthusiasts everywhere why filmmaker Christopher Nolan should be taken seriously. Comic book fans and mainstream moviegoers alike have patiently waited for an announcement regarding a third Nolan-helmed “Batman” film (“Batman Begins” was the first) ever since the closing credits on the most recent examination of Gotham City’s gritty streets. Thankfully, Nolan himself is beginning to think about his “Dark Knight” follow-up as well. At a press junket promoting Nolan’s latest project, “Inception,” the upcoming psychological thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the filmmaker told MTV News that he’s already thinking about “Batman 3” — well, sort of. “Yes and no I suppose would be the answer,” he said. “We know we’re aiming for 2012 [as a release date]. That’s been talked about. We’re just working on the script, really. My brother [Jonah Nolan] has been hard at work on it for quite some time. It’s based on a story that myself and David Goyer have written.” Nolan has previously discussed the third “Batman” film in broad strokes. For example, he’s said that the Joker won’t appear in the film , effectively ending speculation that the late Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning role would be recast. But beyond speaking about the project in general terms, Nolan isn’t ready to discuss “Batman 3” in too much detail — though that fact should change once his work on “Inception” is fully finished in a few weeks. “I’ve been very completely in this movie,” he said about his work on “Inception,” which arrives in theaters on July 16. “In a couple of weeks, I’ll surface and figure out what I’m doing next and how I’m going to approach it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Inception.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Taylor Lautner’s ‘Abduction’ Co-Star Maria Bello Says Movie Is ‘Badass’

‘It’s an incredible script,’ the actress says. By Eric Ditzian Maria Bello Photo: MTV News Taylor Lautner has thrown himself into boxing and fight training in the last few months. He’s learning to work movie magic on a motorcycle. And he’s likely going to have to jump into a pool and figure out how to swim like an action hero . That’s just what it’s going to take to slip into his starring role in “Abduction,” a flick that’s being compared to the Jason Bourne films. And it’s a good thing he’s committed himself so fully, because as co-star Mario Bello told MTV News , the movie will be nothing short of hardcore. “It’s an incredible script. It really is,” she told us at the red-carpet premiere of “Grown Ups.” “John Singleton is directing. I’m so happy to be a part of it. It’s going to be a badass movie.” The story follows Lautner as a kid who, thanks to a visit to a missing-persons website, discovers that he has actually been abducted and the parents who raised him are not his flesh and blood. Jason Isaacs plays his faux-dad, while Bello is his faux-mom. “Do I look like Taylor’s mom?” she asked. Judging by the look she was rocking the red carpet — a form-fitting blue dress and short, sun-kissed blonde locks — Bello should have no problem convincing audiences that she could have birthed a good-looking kid like Lautner. “He is such a gorgeous guy,” she said. But, of course, in the film it turns out that she’s not his real mother. And when Lautner makes that discovery, he’s thrust into a run-and-gun-style thriller. Lautner himself has clearly been training hard for the requirements of “Abduction,” but what about Bello? Might we see her kick a little ass on the big screen? “You never know?” she said. “You’ll have to see the movie!” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

‘Grown Ups’: The Reviews Are In!

Most critics think Adam Sandler and the gang need to step the maturity level up a notch. By Eric Ditzian David Spade and Adam Sandler in “Grown Ups” Photo: Sony Pictures “Grown Ups” only arrived in theaters Friday (June 25), but we’ve seen this all before: Adam Sandler fully embodying his schlubby-jokester shtick, surrounded by friends from his “Saturday Night Live” days and his earlier films, under the direction of a guy who’s helmed no less than five Sandler flicks (with a sixth just wrapped and a seventh already in the works). By this point, 15 years after “Billy Madison” and as Sandler has matured from frenetic man-child to fatherly do-gooder, you either embrace what the crew delivers to the big screen or your don’t — and when it comes to “Grown Ups,” most critics seem to find they don’t. Yet the film is on track to reel in between $30 million and $40 million this weekend, so clearly there’s a wide divide between reviewers and the moviegoing public they seek to inform. What will you think about this film that has Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade and Rob Schneider meeting up at a childhood lake house to rediscover the youthful enthusiasm they’ve lost over the years? The only way to find out, of course, is to hit the theaters. And before you do, here is what the critics have to say. “What kept me laughing is the genuine camaraderie among Sandler’s posse, the way they almost play themselves that perfectly suits this slim material,” wrote Steve Persall of the St. Petersburg Times. “Their conversations as characters sound like smack talk among one-upping pals, with nothing off-limits. Often when comedian buddies make movies together, the results are terribly inside jokes, not the least of which is that they’re being paid to loaf. ‘Grown Ups’ lets us in on that gag, and occasionally makes it work.” There’s no doubting there are laughs to be had in the film, but Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune was left wishing the laughs had come more often. “I love to laugh, loud and long and clear, just like Ed Wynn in ‘Mary Poppins,’ ” he wrote. “It’s just that ‘Grown Ups’ director Dennis Dugan, a frequent Sandler collaborator, is such a dang lunkhead when it comes to slapstick. On the crudest possible level he lands the punch lines often enough to please the folks and make the money, so there’s no fiscal incentive for him to change a thing about his directorial approach to anything, really. But if he ever learns to sustain a shot and build a joke visually within the frame, rather than slamming it together in the edit, he’ll give us better comedies. I guar-an-tee it.” Of the five men, though, perhaps the most consistently laugh-inducing is Schneider. As the Los Angeles Times ‘ Betsy Sharkey said, “The surprise of the movie, and there aren’t many, is Schneider. He plays completely against type as a New Age philosopher-massage therapist in a May-December relationship where he’s May and the most sensitive, restrained one of the bunch with nary a cutting remark. Except for the very bad toupee, the whole renaissance man thing is a good look on Schneider, though it also means he bears the brunt of the good humor boys.” “Say this for ‘Grown Ups’: Its heart is in the right place,” said Scott Bowles of the USA Today. “The actors seem genuinely fond of one another, and the message — don’t pass up life’s simple pleasures — suits its PG-13 rating. And the ’80s soundtrack is spot-on. But it isn’t enough to salvage this film. By the time we reach the finale (though it has a nice twist), it feels as if it’s time to pack your bags and head home. Sandler may still have a hit on his hands. The actor’s fans are as rabid as any, and he continues to churn out blockbusters, ‘Funny People’ notwithstanding. But if Sandler hopes to win over new fans, he may want to cork the scatological humor and let it age a bit.” We’ll give Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times the final word: ” ‘Grown Ups’ is a pleasant, genial, good-hearted, sometimes icky comedy that’s like spending a weekend with well-meaning people you don’t want to see again any time real soon. They’re the kind of people where, in the car driving home, you ask, ‘What was that all about?’ Try to imagine the Three Stooges slapping each other’s faces with dehydrated reconstituted bananas. No, really.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Grown Ups.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Metric Say Having A Song In ‘Eclipse’ Is ‘One Big Wow’

“Eclipse (I’m Yours),” written from Bella’s perspective, closes the film. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Emily Haines of “Metric” Photo: MTV News Metric’s Emily Haines wasn’t exactly the natural choice to pen the closing number to “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” and not just because she fronts one of the most fiercely independent bands out there. When she was asked to contribute to the flick, she hadn’t read a page of Stephenie Meyer’s books or seen a second of the first two films. “I was not aware of anything about the books or the movies,” Haines told MTV News at the world premiere of “Eclipse” on Thursday (June 24) night in Los Angeles. “I don’t know where I was the whole time. Maybe in the studio, or on tour? I don’t know.” But even though she had, uh, limited knowledge of the series, legendary composer Howard Shore still insisted she work on a song for the film, one that was written from the perspective of heroine Bella Swan. In fact, he seemed to think it was better that she came in without a preconceived notion of Kristen Stewart’s character. “I said that to Howard right away, you know, ‘Look, if you’re looking for someone who knows the ins and outs of these books, and has watched the films, I’m the wrong person,'” Haines said. “And he said, ‘Actually, it’s good that you’re not, because we want [it written] from the perspective of the character.’ … So, since then, I’ve learned a little bit more about how Muse plays into the books, and the larger themes. But I think it’s good I went into it just looking at the character.” The song Haines ended up contributing to the soundtrack — a tune called “Eclipse (I’m Yours)” — was so strong Shore insisted that it close the film, which is what brought Haines and her Metric mates to the red carpet. And even though they were about to watch the film with an audience for the first time, they weren’t the slightest bit nervous. After all, it wasn’t like they were about to go play a rock show or something. “It’s easier. There’s no equipment to malfunction or anything,” Haines laughed. “But anyone who knows the band knows we’ve had a hilarious adventure over the years, and this is just, like, one big ‘Wow.'” Related Videos ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’ Hollywood Premiere Brings Out The Stars Related Photos “Eclipse” Premieres In Los Angeles Related Artists Metric
