Put On Blast: HIV Community Pens Open Letter And Slams Tyler Perry For His Latest Flick ‘Temptation’ For Portraying Them As Monsters

The HIV community claims director Tyler Perry casts a bad light on people living with the disease…. HIV Community Pens Open Letter To Tyler Perry The Positive Women’s Network of the United States of America penned a letter and created a petition slamming director Tyler Perry for coming up with a plot they feel is offensive to those living with HIV , demanding a meeting with him immediately. The organization writes: As you may be aware, one of the greatest barriers to addressing the HIV epidemic is the high level of stigma and misinformation attached to this simple virus. Stigma prevents people from getting tested for HIV, from protecting themselves during sex, from accessing care when they test positive, and from disclosing their HIV status to family, friends, and sexual partners. Myths and outdated perceptions about how HIV is transmitted and the implications of an HIV diagnosis have resulted in discriminatory treatment towards, and violence against, people living with HIV. Unfortunately, Temptation can only serve to perpetuate stigma. Your film depicts people with HIV as untouchable and unlovable, doomed to a lifetime of loneliness, and unable to tell their own stories. It implies that men with HIV are sexually irresponsible and predatory. And the final image — that of a woman who has been infected with HIV due to an extramarital affair walking away alone and unhealthy — sends the message that HIV is a punishment for immoral behavior. Mr. Perry, as a leader in the African-American community, is this really the message you want to send in 2013, over three decades into this epidemic? Your impact on beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors in the community is not insignificant. And if you portray people with HIV as sinful, secretive monsters, unworthy of love and incapable of reproduction, what incentive do people have to learn their HIV status or for people with HIV to disclose their status? HIV is not something that “guilty” people get. It is not a punishment for cheating, lying, using drugs or alcohol, having more than one partner, or not asking the right questions. It is a virus whose transmission is fueled by poverty, ignorance, racism, sexism, homophobia, fear, violence, and many other factors – not by people with HIV. In fact, studies show that the overwhelming majority of people with HIV fiercely protect their partners once they know their HIV status. Many of us are in long-term relationships with HIV-negative partners. And yes, we even have children! We call on you to undo the damage that your film has undoubtedly already caused. Do you think Tyler Perry owes the HIV Network a meeting and open discussion as to how he portrays people living with the disease? Tyler Perry has brought up the theme of HIV in some of his other films where he portrays the character who has the disease like a villain, closeted homosexual and/or monster. Should Tyler Perry be more sensitive to people living with HIV? Learn more about the Positive Women’s Network of the United States of America HERE Continue reading

Star Trek Into Darkness Review: Thoughts From a Star Trek Virgin

I am not a Star Trek fan. I know as much about Star Trek as you learn by just being a human on Earth. I know the names of most of the Enterprise Crew… Oh! I know the “Enterprise.” I know what a Vulcan is. And a Klingon. And Warp Speed. And we’re starting to reach the extent of my knowledge here… I saw Star Trek Into Darkness . And I felt like a kid who just transferred to a new school and picked the only table of friends who’ve known each other since birth to sit down with during lunch. They’re all talking about “Randy’s Mom’s hilarious pancake that one time,” and I come from a place that called pancakes ‘flap jacks’ so I’m all confused. The film was big. It was explodey. It was a boring, boring, boring Summer Action Flick. It didn’t look all that spectacular. And the lens flares! My God the lens flares! Star Trek Into Darkness consisted of two main elements: 1) Giant set pieces (meaning fights, explosions, general 10-minute action scenes that don’t advance the plot more than an inch) 2) The winkiest, noddiest, most alienating inside jokes I’ve ever seen in a major blockbuster. The whole thing felt like a Star Trek nerd going “Ehhh? Ehhhh? See what I did there? Remember that? From the other thing?” I can’t say exactly what “the other thing” was (except in one or two very obvious instances), since I haven’t seen any of the other things. For all the inessential dialogue and exhausting fight scenes, the entire plot, “twists” and all, is contained in a speech that lasts about 2 minutes. And it’s very difficult to follow. This leaves the audience with almost nothing to latch onto except the familiarity of the numerous references and callbacks to other movies and episodes in the franchise. But then, why see the film? Why not just catch up on the franchise? Star Trek Into Darkness plays like Battleship , if you were also watching some old Star Trek episodes on your iPhone in the movie theater at the same time. If you’re a giant Star Trek fan, you may enjoy that, but I’m curious why. After terrorist attacks in London and San Francisco, the Enterprise Crew embarks on a diplomatically inadvisable manhunt on an alien planet; a plot lifted directly, almost farcically, from the mission to kill Osama Bin Laden. Apart from the terrorists revealed (I guess?) motivations, there is not much more of a story. Beyond the nearly non-existent plot, the completely unsurprising plot twists, and the resolution that’s so quick you’re not sure if it actually happened or if the third act is yet to come, Star Trek featured some distracting scientific flaws. I’m not scientists, but can objects in space go from still to “barreling towards Earth?” There seems to be some lack-of-gravity in the way. On the same token, if a space ship jostles around, can its crew really start falling through the hallways? Surely any kind of simulated gravity would be pulling the crew down toward the floor and not in some cardinal direction (considering they’re in space and there are no directions). How about, if a hole is blown into the wall of anything in space? Can you just hold your breath, hold onto something, and survive? Or would your insides explode out of your ears? It seems pointless to set a film in space if you take advantage of the cool zero-G aspects of space exactly none times. And beyond that, you actually ignore zero-G and pretend there’s gravity, atmosphere, and oxygen. The performances were all decent, with just enough camp to make it feel authentically Star Trek . Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, and Jon Cho felt like a family on screen, which definitely made the viewing experience more tolerable, especially with such an emphasis on how “your crew is your family” in the script. Benedict Cumberbatch was excellent in his cold, unfeeling evilness. Newcomers Alice Eve and Peter Weller turned in fine performances, if a little flat given their characters’ enormous stakes in the plot. Ultimately, Star Trek Into Darkness is a throw-away Summer film with a lot of recycled material. The film’s case is not helped by the fact that it’s only the second major blockbuster to come out this year, after the absolutely phenomenal Iron Man 3 (you can read about the differences between the two films in our Iron Man 3 review ). See it, or don’t. You probably will. Just don’t blame me if you come out of the theater confused, disappointed, and maybe a little tired. RATING: 2/5

O.J. Simpson Requests New Trial, Claims Lawyer Botched Robbery Case

O.J. Simpson made his request for a new trial today, claiming the lawyer who represented him in his kidnapping and robbery case screwed him over. Guy will seriously never go away it seems. Simpson appeared in court wearing a blue jail uniform; his hair was shorter and grayer than it was during a previous court appearance in 2008. He’s also not wasting away in jail. Just saying. Guy must have the premium meal plan in there or something, because wow. Letting himself go. Anyway, he entered the courtroom in handcuffs, flanked by security guards and nodded and raised his eyebrows to acknowledge people he recognized. A marshal warned people in the audience not to try to communicate with Simpson, who’s doing 9-to-33 years in prison. No words were exchanged. Simpson, who never testified in his 1994-95 murder trial or in the 2007 robbery case that sent him to the big house, is due to testify Wednesday. His former attorney, Yale Galanter, is scheduled to testify Friday. Simpson says Galanter knew about his plan to retrieve what he thought were personal items from two sports memorabilia dealers in a casino hotel room. O.J. also said Yale never told him a plea deal was on the table. Galanter was paid nearly $700,000 for his defense but had a personal interest in preventing himself from being identified as a witness to the crimes, O.J. says. As a result, he misled Simpson so much that the former football star deserves a new trial, new lawyers for the NFL great claimed today in court. “To me, the claims are solid. I don’t know how the court can’t grant relief,” said Patricia Palm, the appeals lawyer who is spearheading this effort. Of the 22 allegations of conflict-of-interest and ineffective counsel that Palm raised, Clark County (Nev.) District Court Judge Linda Marie Bell agreed to hear 19. The five-day proceedings are technically neither a trial nor appeal. There won’t be any opening statements from either side. The judge will listen to testimony before deciding whether Simpson deserves a new trial. It’s not clear whether Bell will rule immediately. Simpson maintains the plan was to take back family photos and personal belongings stolen from him after his 1995 “trial of the century” murder acquittal. He was soon convicted of recruiting some goons to “get some heat” and robbing the memorabilia dealers, however, and was sent to state prison. O.J. was also found liable for damages in a civil wrongful death lawsuit and ordered to pay $33.5 million to the families of the two people he probably killed.
