Defiant David Fincher Reveals Oscar Strategy

“I don’t buy this notion that emotion and sentimentality are the same,” the filmmaker says in a new THR profile. “You won’t see me on Barbara Walters; Oprah, that’s not who I am. I don’t like sentimentality because I don’t like movies that ‘tell’ me — I want to engage in a movie that says, ‘Here it is.’ It’s not a colder point of view; that’s reductive. It’s more adult.” Fair enough! Also: This might be a problem . [ THR ]

The 9 Most Scathing Critical Responses to James Cameron’s Sanctum

Our own Stephanie Zacharek warned you away from the waterlogged cave-bound 3D cheese that is James Cameron’s (executive-produced Avatar technology-wasting favor-to-a-friend) Sanctum , and she’s not alone: many more esteemed critics made it through the Aussie survival adventure with their spirits, eyeballs, and attention spans barely intact. Some saw Sanctum ‘s terrible B-movie dialogue as amusing unintentional camp; will you be so lucky? Rappel down to the depths of Sanctum ‘s most scathing critiques and survey the rocky terrain ahead.

The Case For Cobie Smulders in The Avengers (Among Other Blockbusters)

The further away I get from the news that Henry Cavill was cast as Superman , the more I appreciate the Warner Bros. decision. Not because it proves there is some silly conspiracy to hire foreign-born actors to play American icons; rather, because Warner Bros. saved everyone from having to follow along with the endless wheel-spinning short lists that usually accompany the casting of most franchise blockbusters nowadays. (See: the Warner Bros. hunt for Lois Lane as reference .) Still, if we’re going to be subjected to another short list, at least it can include names like Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Morena Baccarin and Cobie Smulders. All three actresses are reportedly up for the role of Nick Fury’s sidekick The Avengers , which got me to thinking: Why isn’t Cobie Smulders more famous?

The Coen Brothers Will Watch Tara Reid in The Big Lebowski 2, But Won’t Make It

The whole Internet had a big laugh the other day when one-time tabloid staple Tara Reid announced that she’d be co-starring in The Big Lebowski 2 later this year. ( As Louis happily noted , he’s co-starring in Mrs. Miniver 2 , due in theaters roughly at the same time.) If that news surprised you, imagine being the Coen Brothers. “I’m glad she’s working on it,” Ethan said to Matthew Odam of Austin 360. “Well, we don’t [have anything planned] but we’ll watch it when it comes out.” Added Joel: “Especially if Tara’s in it.” Godspeed, Ms. Reid! DVD: Age Cannot Wither, Nor Custom Stale, All About Eve

Some movies are deadly accurate about capturing the way people really talk while others have an ear for how we wish everyone spoke all the time. And you can definitely sign me up for a world where the quips fly as fast, and the bitchery is as crisp, as in All About Eve (Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment). Sixty years after this Broadway-backstage comedy-drama snagged a Best Picture Oscar, it remains a sterling example of American movies at their smartest and most entertaining.

Gael García Bernal Gets a Conscience in the Even the Rain Trailer

The trailer for the Spanish submission to the Oscars Even the Rain brings up an interesting dilemma. In theory, it’s great to make films with a social conscience that inform a wider audience about historical and global injustice, but what happens when you have to bow to exploitation just to get the film made? In this film, Gael García Bernal plays a director making a film about Christopher Columbus’ imperialism who realizes he may need to turn a blind eye to modern day exploitation in order to complete the movie. Tense revolutionary violence and pensive hillside contemplation ensue.

Directors Guild Award Shocker: Tom Hooper Wins For The King’s Speech

And just like that, we’ve got a new front-runner. After previously notching an unexpected win at the Producers Guild Award, The King’s Speech continued on its guild rampage, with first-time nominee Tom Hooper winning Best Feature Film Director last night, leaving previous favorite David Fincher with nothing. And as you will hear ad nauseum today, only six times in the past has the DGA Award winner not won the Academy Award for Best Director, most recently in 2002 when Rob Marshall won for Chicago , but Roman Polanski went on to win the Oscar for The Pianist . Will The King’s Speech make it a guild hat trick and win big tonight at the Screen Actors Guild Awards? Full list of winners after the break. [ Deadline ]

Watch: Kids Vs. Killers in the Sundance Midnight Movie Short The Legend of Beaver Dam

The midnight movie crowd at Sundance hooted for the grindhouse pic Hobo with a Shotgun , but it downright fell in love with the charming horror-musical short that played in front of it in a brilliant stroke of spot-on programming. The twists in Jerome Sable and Eli Batalion’s 12-minute short The Legend of Beaver Dam are best left unspoiled, but suffice to say it involves a campfire tale, screaming children, plenty of gore, and a metal rock sing-off between a nerdy kid hero and a bloodthirsty killer. Sable and Batalion are supposedly working on a feature along the lines of Beaver Dam , so take a peek at this teaser and keep an eye out for more from these two. [ StumpySam.com ]
