Roller Skates and Mixtapes: Skateland Trailer Refuses to Let Go of the 80’s

Our numerous pleas to stop with the 80’s references in film and tv have apparently fallen on deaf ears. Within the first 10 seconds of the Skateland trailer, we’ve got a precious, hip mixtape reference and a loving closeup of wheels on the floor of a skating rink. Yep, there’s another aimless guy who didn’t know how to let go of adulthood two decades ago, and another movie with a window into his kind-of-hilarious and kind-of-heart-wrenching journey. Twilight ‘s Ashley Greene is along for support this time around.

Christian Slater Plays My Favorite Scene: ‘That’s the Most Romantic Moment in Movie History’

Of all the roles that Christian Slater has played in his 30-year career, one of his most beloved remains Clarence Worley, the comic book store clerk who falls for a cute call girl in True Romance . So it is ironic that when Movieline asked the actor — who stars in Fox’s upcoming workplace comedy Breaking In — to play a round of Movieline’s go-to parlor game last week, Slater described the big screen romance that rang truest to him. Hint: There ain’t gonna be no re-match for this very special round of My Favorite Scene.

Michael Shannon, Jessica Chastain Nab First Sundance Deal

So you might have heard Sundance gets underway this week, but Sony Pictures Classics isn’t wasting any time on the acquisitions front: The distributor has picked up the Michael Shannon/Jessica Chastain psychological thriller Take Shelter , which premieres in competition Jan. 24. CAA — which represents virtually the entire principal cast as well as writer-director Jeff Nichols — sealed the deal with two days to spare before the fest’s opening night. And thus it falls off Movieline’s annual bidding-war forecast, also coming soon. Congrats to all.

So Why is Black Swan a Huge Hit, Anyway? (Hint: Lesbians)

As alluded to in this morning’s edition of The Broadsheet, everyone in Hollywood seems stunned by the success story that is Black Swan . Even filmmaker Darren Aronofsky says he can’t make heads or tails of the phenomenon, which has earned recognition everywhere from manic-comic Saturday Night Live segments to the supermarket-tabloid media obsessed with star Natalie Portman (now pregnant by and engaged to marry on-screen dance partner Benjamin Millipied). “I get the teenage-girl part of the audience because it’s a coming-of-age story about a girl becoming a woman. But older people are seeing it too,” he told the LA Times . “I don’t know if even I understand it.” Oh, Darren — don’t start being modest now : Let’s hear it for lesbians!

DVD: Are We Allowed to Call Broadcast News a Classic Yet?

While Network is the movie that prophesied the future of corporate-controlled TV news, James L. Brooks’ 1987 Broadcast News was more zeitgeist-y. The shift toward happy-talk infotainment had been going on long enough that Brooks had satirized it in the 1970s on The Mary Tyler Moore Show , but the battle against what Holly Hunter’s character calls “the historic influence of Entertainment Tonight ” had not been so roundly lost as it is now.

Watch Ricky Gervais Eviscerate Hollywood at the Golden Globes

If you had been waiting to see Ricky Gervais pantomime oral sex between a 24-year-old Playboy Playmate and Hugh Hefner on NBC, then the Golden Globes were for you! They were also for anyone who loves watching the stuffing taken out of Hollywood — and awards shows — in general. So, good for us, then, that Gervais hosted the Globes on Sunday night — just don’t expect to have him back next year. When Phillip Berk was asked after the show if Gervais would host in 2012 , he responded with a very loaded, “No comment.” Alas, we’ll always have this monologue. And Then Michael Douglas Photobombed Angelina Jolie and Catherine Zeta-Jones

Michael Douglas was the “surprise” presenter of the Golden Globe for Best Drama on Sunday night (surprise in quotes because, um, he was nominated and in attendance), which was nice to see, especially in light of his recent battle with cancer. How did Douglas celebrate his return to the public eye? By photobombing his wife at a Golden Globes after party, of course! Click ahead to see Douglas’ impish delight behind Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angelina Jolie.
