‘The Hunger Games’ In 2012: Our Five Forecasts

From the film’s premiere to casting ‘Catching Fire,’ Hobnobbing takes a look at what to look forward to this year. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in the “Hunger Games” trailer Photo: Lionsgate The past year boasted a cornucopia of ” Hunger Games ” highlights for fans to chew on, from the casting of Jennifer Lawrence as gritty heroine Katniss Everdeen to the first full-length trailer to the recent debut of Taylor Swift’s soundtrack song “Safe and Sound.” But as bountiful as 2011’s harvest was, 2012 will offer a bumper crop of news from the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian tome as it finally hits theaters March 23. Though our calls to Greasy Sae’s Psychic Hotline have gone unanswered, we have a few educated guesses about what the new year holds for Panem’s people. Read on for our five forecasts: 1. One more trailer With just about two and a half months to go until the first film’s debut, we’d bet a silver parachute that fans will get to feast on one more look at Katniss, Peeta and Gale before the tributes enter the arena. What another clip would include , well, we’re less sure about that, but we wouldn’t mind a closer look at life in District 12 or a more detailed glimpse at the other 22 tributes. 2. A full soundtrack announcement Swift, the Civil Wars, the Decemberists and Arcade Fire’s husband/wife duo of Win Butler and Regine Chassagne have all been secured for the T-Bone Burnett-produced soundtrack, but we suspect a few more artists will enter the fray before all is said and sung. I’ve already made my plea for Florence and the Machine , while NextMovie suggested acts like Snow Patrol and Regina Spektor for the much-anticipated album. We’ll keep our ears to the ground for this one. 3. The film’s premiere Unless the apocalypse comes early, March 23 will be a blessed day for “Hunger Games” acolytes, as the flick will finally blaze into theaters. We expect more than a few faithful to camp out at their local cineplex for a midnight showing. And we’re more than ready to drool over whatever confections Lawrence wears on the red carpet during the movie’s premieres and publicity circuit. 4. Casting “Catching Fire” With the second “Hunger Games” installment already slated for a November 22, 2013, release (and an Oscar-winning writer being eyed for the script), we expect the follow-up to begin shooting in mid- to late 2012 — which means a whole new slew of casting calls! Where are you Finnick , Johanna, Beetee and Mags? 5. First look at “Catching Fire” Asking for a celluloid sneak would be a stretch, but we don’t think it’s completely inconceivable to think a first snapshot might find its way to the Web by the final days of 2012. Here’s hoping the “Catching Fire” director (whomever he/she will be) isn’t afraid to take a cue from “Breaking Dawn” helmer Bill Condon, who released the first photographic teaser for the final “Twilight” installments over Thanksgiving in 2010. Oklahoma City star Kevin Durant scored 30 points and hit a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer to lift the host Thunder to a 104-102 win over Dallas last night. In a rematch of last season’s Western Conference finals, OKC let Dallas erase a five-point deficit in the final 46 seconds, but moved to 4-0 on Durant’s buzzer-beater. ‘Harry Potter’ Comes To Bittersweet End In 2011

Arrival of ‘Deathly Hallows, Part 2′ was a moment that made headlines and marked the end of an era. By John Mitchell “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” Photo: WB For millions of people all over the world, the approach of midnight on July 15 brought with it a gut-wrenching mix of excitement and heartache. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” was set to open all over the world, and as fans lined up outside movie theaters — some in costume as their favorite character — we realized that this was it. The joy of seeing the final installment of the most successful film franchise in history was tempered with the sadness that we’d never get to do this again. This truly great thing that had been, from first book to final film, a part of our lives for well over a decade had reached its end. For an entire generation, the film’s release was like turning the final page on our childhoods. “Deathly Hallows, Part 2” wasn’t just a movie; it was the event of the summer. And the bittersweet moment is also MTV News’ #8 Top Newsmaker of 2011 , because it made headlines and marked the end of an era. The stars of the film definitely seemed to understand just how close to fans’ hearts the franchise had become . It had, after all, touched them too. Asked if there’d be tears upon the film’s release, Emma Watson cheekily told MTV News at the MTV Movie Awards, “Maybe a few. Maybe one or two, just little ones.” The film set box-office records for the biggest first day ($92.1 million) and largest opening weekend, both domestically ($168.5 million) and worldwide ($314 million), ever and received the best reviews of any film in the franchise. The praise wasn’t contained to critics and fans: Even the stars of the film were in awe of the final product. “I was a wreck because of the film itself,” Daniel Radcliffe told MTV News at the film’s New York premiere. “You’ve got to have a heart of stone to not find part of it — especially Alan Rickman’s performance — heartbreaking, so yeah, I’ve done my fair share of crying already. … I think that we proved in doing ‘Potter’ that you can bring integrity and perpetual growth to a franchise.” Fans’ devotion to the books, films and characters created by J.K. Rowling was manifest in the enthusiastic response to our “Harry Potter” World Cup , MTV News’ month-long, March Madness-style tournament to find out which character was the fan favorite. More than 7.4 million votes were cast in the competition, resulting in a final face-off between Ron Weasley and Professor Severus Snape . In the end, the compellingly complex Snape took the title, and star Alan Rickman thanked fans at the film’s New York premiere, telling MTV News that Snape’s victory was “a vote for ambiguity and things where you don’t quite know how they’re going to turn out.” He continued, “Also, it’s [Snape’s] values that you can’t talk about without ruining the film, but things like courage and determination and loyalty and love, actually.” The success of the series itself could be seen as a celebration of those same things. On the surface, the “Harry Potter” films are fantasies about a boy wizard and his underdog friends navigating a magical universe in which evil lurks in the shadows. But above all, the “Potter” books and films champion courage, determination and loyalty in the face of great adversity and are premised on the notion that love ultimately conquers all. We can think of no better message for a film series to impart on a generation of young people facing a real world mired in conflict and economic turmoil. It’s sad that there’s no more “Potter” to look forward to, but the magic created by Rowling; directors Chris Columbus, Alfonso Cuar

‘X Factor’: Josh Krajcik Is ‘The One To Beat’

Melanie Amaro also shines, while Marcus Canty’s take on George Michael is dubbed ‘grotesque’ by Simon Cowell. By Adam Graham Josh Krajcik on “X Factor” Photo: FOX With the images of a broken-down Rachel Crow still fresh on everyone’s minds, “The X Factor” continued Wednesday (December 14) with its final four contestants pushing toward next week’s finale. Melanie Amaro and Josh Krajcik came out looking the strongest, seemingly leaving L.A. Reid’s two remaining contestants — Chris Rene and perpetual bottom-dweller Marcus Canty — vying for the final spot in next week’s three-way finale. Each singer was given two songs apiece to strut their stuff for America. Beginning with a switched-up version of Mariah Carey’s “Hero,” Amaro was able to overcome her cheesy staging, which made her look like she was performing in a community theater’s version of heaven. The song was called “bloody fantastic” by Cowell, while her second song — a rendition of the classic “Feelin’ Good” — was dubbed by her mentor her best performance yet in the competition. Reid agreed, calling Amaro “the greatest female that’s ever graced this stage.” Burrito maker Josh Krajcik flexed a little of his Krajcik Magic, starting with the Beatles’ “Come Together” and closing the show with a piano-and-vocal take on the Leonard Cohen standard “Hallelujah.” “I think it would be a massive shame if you don’t make the final next week,” Cowell told the 30-year-old, while a nearly-in-tears Paula Abdul remarked, “If it were the finals, you’re the one to beat.” (Reid was not as sold, and told Krajcik his “Hallelujah” “lacked excitement.”) Chris Rene somehow took on both Mark McGrath and Alicia Keys on Wednesday, diving into Sugar Ray’s “Fly” and Keys’ “No One” in the span of the show. In both, his spirit was trumped over his abilities, and the judges said he made them feel good, calling that just as important as vocal prowess. “Stardom is not about singing,” Reid told him, “it’s about lovability, and you have lovability. Am I right?” Well, McGrath would certainly agree. That left Canty, who has landed in the bottom two each of the last three weeks, a fate Reid tried to spin by dubbing him “three-time Save Me Song champion Marcus Canty.” Canty’s first song was a routine spin through Boyz II Men’s “I’ll Make Love to You,” while his final performance — a clubbed-to-death take on George Michael’s “Careless Whisper” — prompted Cowell’s most stinging evisceration of the entire season. Cowell called it “horrific” and “grotesque” and compared it to a Las Vegas show in 1983. “It’s not your fault, but this was a joke. An absolute joke, and you deserve better than that. That was as bad as I’ve ever seen.” Reid, on the other hand, praised his contestant, telling Canty that rather than an underdog, “Tonight, you look more like a champion.” But it’s not up to Reid or any of the other judges, for that matter; this week, voting is entirely in the hands of the viewers. One singer will get sent home during Thursday’s results show, which is set to feature performances by Florence and the Machine and “X Factor” judge Nicole Scherzinger. Who do you think is going through to next week’s final? Let us know in the comments!

‘Dancing With The Stars’: Rob Kardashian Steps Up

Big sister Kim looks on as Rob tops the leaderboard, with J.R. Martinez and Ricki Lake falling short of the reality star. By Kelley L. Carter Rob Kardashian on “Dancing With the Stars” Photo: ABC The talk-show host. The reality star. The war hero. Only one will be crowned the winner on Tuesday’s (November 22) “Dancing With the Stars” season finale, but you better believe Ricki Lake, Rob Kardashian and J.R. Martinez are hoping their dance moves win over America’s heart. On Monday night, they performed two dances each — the second was a freestyle dance — and the judges loved what Kardashian brought to the table. After weeks of seeing everyone else nab the highest scores, it was the reality star who brought home the top spot on the leaderboard. Here’s how everyone fared: Ricki Lake and Derek Hough Lake, the sole remaining woman in the competition, went first, dancing the cha-cha to Chris Brown’s “Yeah 3x,” and the judges loved it, telling her she was living the dance and exuding confidence. “Action-packed performance. Good timing. Good rhythm. Hips were working good. It’s a dance deserving of this final. Well done,” hard-to-please judge Len Goodman told her. 27/30 When Lake came back for her freestyle, she burst through a screen (of her larger self from earlier in the season; since being on the show she’s shed quite a bit of weight), and they shimmied and flipped and twisted and turned all about the stage. The judges said their dance was demanding and difficult. “It was fun, it was entertaining. Overall, what a great number,” Goodman said. 27/30 Lake’s overall score: 54/60 Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke The reality star —whose big sister Kim watched from the audience for the first time since her divorce — danced the waltz, and the judges found his movements to be a little heavy and said he lost his posture at times. Carrie Ann Inaba said he was the male version of Cinderella. Overall, they thought it was simple and beautiful. “Tonight, you were flowing and you were glowing. So full of expression. I love the continuity of lines,” judge Bruno Tonioli said. 27/30 For their second dance of the night, Kardashian and Burke danced on a set that mirrored Harlem, New York’s Cotton Club, and Cheryl said she wanted to play to Rob’s strengths. That meant their dance started off slow and then kicked up a notch and finished fast. The judges said their dance blew them all away. “Brilliant contact! Brilliant execution! Brilliant performance!” Tonioli yelled. 30/30 Kardashian’s overall score: 57/60 J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff For much of the season, he’s topped the leaderboard — or at least been close — until last week. His ankle was injured, but he danced in spite of it, and his scores suffered. For his cha-cha on Monday, his ankle was in much better shape, but the judges said Martinez was off-time and there were many mistakes. Tonioli was the lone judge who gave him praise. Carrie Ann Inaba offered: “I think when people watch you dance, they just fall in love with your spirit. Tonight, your musicality was a bit off. We’re in the finals, so watch your arms. I know you’ve got it in you.” 24/30 Martinez performed the final freestyle of the night, and they went with a Latin-inspired routine to pay homage to his Latin heritage. The judges said this time around, he redeemed himself. They said his dance was hypnotic and found it to be an incredible comeback from his first-round routine. “That’s the way to come back! Those lifts were the sickest lifts I’ve ever seen — congratulations!” Inaba cheered. 30/30 Martinez’s overall score: 54/60 Who had your favorite dance of the finals? Let us know in the comments!
