Race Matters: 86% Of Black People In America Are Satisfied With Their Lives Despite Dismal Unemployment Rates And Economy

86% Of Black Americans Are Satisfied With Their Lives Here’s a little positivity for your life today! According to NPR: You might think that African-Americans might be more pessimistic about their lives. The housing crisis decimated pockets of black wealth. The black unemployment rate has been nearly double the national average for several years. But according to findings from our survey of more than 1,000 African-Americans, you’d be wrong. A new poll released Tuesday by NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Harvard School of Public Health found that the overwhelming majority of black people (86 percent) said they were satisfied with their lives. Nearly 60 percent said they would eventually achieve the American dream of financial security and home ownership. A little more than half of those polled (53 percent) said they felt their lives had gotten better in recent years. he survey sampled about 1,081 people, and the geographic breakdown — with a majority of respondents in the South or in urban areas — roughly matched the demographics of African-Americans in the country more broadly. It asked respondents for their opinions on a wide range of issues: finances, personal health, dating lives, assessments of their communities and neighborhoods, and much more. Robert Blendon, a professor of public health at Harvard and one of the study’s co-directors, said that polls usually find that that people’s reports of their life satisfaction is often much higher than the economic climate might indicate. This optimism has barely budged from Harvard’s last poll of African-Americans in 2002, when 90 percent of black people said they were satisfied with their lives. Twenty-one percent said that they’d achieved the American dream of having a nice home and financial security, while nearly 60 percent said they had not but felt they would eventually. (Sixteen percent said they felt they would never achieve it.) But Blendon said that beneath that optimism, there was real anxiety. Respondents are “satisfied with their lives but there’s a lot of concern,” he said. “They’re very fearful of losing their jobs and very fearful of getting stuck with a very large medical bill if they get sick.” One of the most surprising findings in the study: who was or wasn’t looking for a romantic partner. When people in the prime marrying cohort — ages 18 to 49, never married, divorced or widowed — were asked whether they were seeking a long-term relationship, just about a third said they were. But it’s the gender breakdown of the relationship numbers that really jump out: men were much more likely to say that they were looking for a long-term relationship (43 percent) than were women (25 percent). Blendon speculated that this, too, might be tied in part to economic concerns. He pointed to studies in which black women are more concerned with the financial stability of their partners than Latinas or white women. And since black women are outpacing black men on a host of metrics that might determine their financial prospects — black women are more likely to attend and graduate college and receive advanced degrees — Blendon says they may be less likely to see much financial upside in pairing up compared to black men. “African-American women appear to have more security than men, and so women [might] see less men who see bring financial security to the table,” he said. Elsewhere In The World: Buckets Of KFC Are Being Smuggled Into Gaza, Man Says Eating KFC “Has Been A Dream”

You know times are hard when people are smuggling chicken . Buckets of KFC Smuggled Under Border According to CNN A confluence of a hankering for fried chicken and hard times in the smuggling business means buckets of KFC are showing up on tables in Gaza. The idea to get the American fast-food staple into the hands of hungry Gazans came from al-Yamama, a food delivery service that opened in the Palestinian territory a few years ago, according to The Christian Science Monitor. When employees last month had a taste for some finger-lickin’ good stuff, they called a friend just over the Gaza border in al-Arish, Egypt, and asked him to order some up. He did so and sent it to Gaza through one of the hundreds of tunnels under the Gaza-Egypt border used to get goods into Gaza prohibited by Israeli restrictions, things such as weapons and cars. The transfer of fried chicken from Egypt to Gaza took three hours, not exactly fast food, but good enough for a territory where there are no Western fast-food franchises, according to the Monitor report. Their appetites sated, “We asked ourselves, ‘Why don’t we provide this service for Gazans?’ ” Mohammed al-Madani, the financial manager of al-Yamama, told the Monitor. Besides satisfying the cravings for chicken, the underground not-so-fast food service proves a point, Khalil Efrangi, an entrepreneur who started al-Yamama, told The New York Times. “I accepted this challenge to prove that Gazans can be resilient despite the restrictions,” the Times quoted him as saying. For the tunnel operators, fast food may help out with hard economic times. Israel has relaxed its embargo on Gaza, so more goods are getting through legitimately. And Egypt cracked down on the tunnels after 16 of its soldiers were killed in a raid on them last year, the Monitor reported. So lower demand means lower prices. “Bringing some meals like these would cost $200 or more three years ago, but now they don’t even cost $20,” tunnel operator Abu Iyad told the Monitor. A bucket of chicken goes for about $30 in Gaza, about three times the price in Egypt, according to the media reports. Besides the chicken, fries, coleslaw and apple pie are available, according to the Times. Al-Yamama promotes the service on its Facebook page and usually makes the runs under the border when it can get 30 or so orders to make things worthwhile, the Times reported. And even if the chicken’s a bit cold and the fries somewhat soggy, customers apparently aren’t complaining. Eating KFC “has been a dream,” Rafat Shororo told the Monitor. “And this company has made my dream come true.” People gonna start killing each other for chicken soon. Shutterstock

George W. Bush Library Dedicated, Five Living U.S. Presidents Converge

In a rare event, all five living U.S. Presidents converged today for the official opening of George W. Bush’s presidential library in Dallas, Texas. Bush, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter were cheered by a crowd of former White House officials and world leaders. They were joined on stage by their wives – the nation’s current and former first ladies – for this outdoor ceremony on a sunny Texas morning. The leaders were putting aside the profound ideological differences that have divided them for years for a day of pomp and pleasantries for Bush, 66. As the George W. Bush Presidential Center opens, with it comes an unofficial return to the public eye for a man whose presidency was so polarizing. Presidential politics also hung over the event. Before the ceremony even began, former First Lady Barbara Bush made waves by brushing aside the building Jeb Bush 2016 presidential buzz. “We’ve had enough Bushes,” said Mrs. Bush, the spouse of George H.W. Bush and mother of George W. Bush, in an interview with NBC’s Today . Yet the man of the hour George W. Bush, openly talked up the presidential prospects of his brother in an interview that aired Wednesday on ABC: “He doesn’t need my counsel, because he knows what it is: ‘Run.'” What happens then is a topic for another day. This one was about George W. Bush’s presidency and the interactive exhibits housed to commemorate it. Major events such as 9/11, the financial bailout, the Iraq War and the international focus on HIV and AIDS, are all prominently displayed at the venue. Bush says he is comfortable with the decisions he made while in office and hopes history will be a fair judge. His successor will likely reflect similarly one day. For now, though, in a reminder of his duties as Oval Office inhabitant, President Obama is already off to honor members of the Texas fertilizer plant explosion .

North Dakota Abortion Ban: Strictest in the Nation

North Dakota lawmakers sent their state’s Republican governor a pair of anti-abortion bills yesterday, both of which would impose the strictest ban on this practice of any state in the country. One proposal would make the procedure illegal as early as six weeks into a pregnancy, while the other would prohibiting women from having an abortion because a fetus has a genetic defect, such as Down Syndrome. While pro-choice advocates say they will protest these measures if they pass, supporters of the bills make it clear that their goal is to challenge the 1973 Supreme Court ruling of Roe v. Wade. Rep. Bette Grande introduced the bills and said the state’s budget never crossed the mind of her or anyone on her side. “I don’t look at it from the financial side of things,” Grande told The Associated Press on Friday. “I look at it from the life side of things.” The measures now go into Governor Jack Dalrymple’s hands, with The American Civil Liberties Union referring to them as “extreme” and noting that many women don’t realize they’re even pregnant until after six weeks. “In America, no woman, no matter where she lives, should be denied the ability to make this deeply personal decision,” ACLU executive director Anthony Romero said in a statement.

Fake Thugs: Chief Keef Gets 60 Days In Jail Despite Crying Like A Lil’ Baby Beyotch In The Courtroom

#KeepSosa Ashy ratchet rapper Chief Keef cried like a baby after getting sentenced to jail! Chief Keef Sentenced To 60 Days In Jail The rising teen rap star was sentenced to 60 days in jail Thursday for violating his probation from a previous gun charge — when he pointed a gun at Chicago cops. Via DNA Chicago reports: “I beg you please,” Chief Keef told Juvenile Court Judge Carl Anthony Walker. “Give me one more chance to show you. .. I am a very good hearted person. I have not picked up any more cases… That’s not my life anymore.” The 17-year-old rapper, whose real name is Keith Cozart, then he broke down in sobs. But the judge hit him with a two-month sentence, nonetheless. Keef then hugged and kissed his mother and grandmother before heading off to serve his time. Prosecutors brought the probation violation case against the Interscope Records star after he appeared in a Pitchfork.com video holding a rifle at a New York gun range. Earlier this week, Walker said Chief Keef exhibited a “clear disregard for the court’s authority” in appearing with the gun. Before being sentenced, prosecutors read lyrics from Chief Keef’s “Love Sosa” rap on his “Finally Rich” album, which debuted last month to strong sales. Prosecutors pointed to lyrics that mentioned gangs and guns, a sign that the teen was unrepentant. Chief Keef, in addressing the judge, called the lyrics “bull stuff.” The sentence means Chief Keef will have to delay touring to support his new record. You going to jail today! Keef likes to think he’s a tough guy rapper but ain’t nothing tougher than prison. Have fun and watch out for the Booty Warrior ! #KeepSosa #KeepSosa #KeepSosa

The Side-Eye: That Fiscal Cliff ‘Deal’ Snuck In A Whole Lot Of Perks For Wall Street…And NASCAR?!?!

GTFOHWTBS! Wall Street wins…again. We knew politicians were shady as hell but, to throw in perks for banks like Morgan Stanely, that have already been bailed out by US already, is just a cotdayum slap in the face! And according to The Huffington Post , there’s a loooong azz list of other tax breaks for that 1% that we couldn’t even try to pull with Uncle Sam: The 11th-hour deal to avert the so-called fiscal cliff preserved billions of dollars in corporate tax giveaways even as it slashed take-home pay for millions of American workers. Tucked inside the last-minute fiscal cliff package were more than a dozen tax loopholes, many of which will benefit Wall Street financial firms and some of the nation’s biggest corporations. These breaks will cost hundreds of billions of dollars in the coming year, underscoring the lobbying power of corporate interests. The deal was less kind to the middle class. Congress permitted a cut in the payroll tax to expire, meaning that the tax burden for the average worker will increase about $1,000 in 2013. “This shows that the lobbyists are able to get what they want even when everyone else is starving,” said Phineas Baxandall, senior analyst for tax and budget policy at the U.S. Public Interest Research Group. “It also shows they are best able to get what they want when no one else is paying attention.” The corporate loopholes were part of a package of so-called tax extenders tacked onto the main bill. The extenders package, first approved by the Senate in early August, mixes popular benefits, like a deduction for teachers who buy classroom supplies, with corporate-friendly carve-outs, such as the “active financing” exception that permits businesses earning interest on overseas lending to defer U.S. taxes on that income indefinitely. There is even a tax break for construction of new racetracks. The tax extenders were passed for only one year, and they still need to clear another potential hurdle: upcoming negotiations over mandated spending cuts and the debt ceiling. President Barack Obama and congressional leaders have indicated they’d like to see a “grand bargain” on taxes, which would feature lower overall rates but close a slew of loopholes. The financial services industry, whose leaders had earlier joined a group of other corporate executives pushing for a “fair” solution to the fiscal crisis, is one of the primary beneficiaries of special-interest tax breaks. The active-financing exception, for example, permits banks like Morgan Stanley to avoid the 35 percent U.S. corporate tax rate on interest income from money lent overseas. A handful of other U.S.-based multinational companies with financing arms, such as Ford Motor Co. and General Electric, also use that exemption to lower their tax bills. The two-year cost to taxpayers is an estimated $11.2 billion, according to the congressional Joint Committee on Taxation. U.S. financial institutions argue that the active-financing exemption is necessary for them to compete in overseas markets with foreign banks that carry a lower tax burden. The loophole was repealed in the Tax Reform Act of 1986, but was reinstated in 1997 as a temporary measure after fierce lobbying by multinational corporations. According to Citizens for Tax Justice, the financial services industry paid an average effective tax rate of 15.5 percent from 2008 to 2010, far lower than that of most other industries. As part of the fiscal cliff deal, Congress also extended another little-known tax break that benefits large multinationals selling products through overseas affiliates. This “pass-through” exemption permits a U.S.-based company to set up a new corporation in a tax haven like the Cayman Islands and sell it a patent owned by the U.S. parent company. Royalties on overseas licensing of that patent would then route to the tax-sheltered firm, instead of the U.S. parent company. The Joint Committee on Taxation says the two-year cost of extending this shelter is $1.5 billion. One of the more unusual tax benefits in the fiscal cliff legislation is a longstanding carve-out for racetracks used by NASCAR. Since 2004, Congress has passed a series of stopgap measures that allow owners of motorsports complexes to accelerate their depreciation expenses. This means that owners can deduct more in expenses, reducing the taxes they must pay. Track owners and NASCAR together have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars lobbying for the tax benefit over the past five years, according to lobbying disclosure forms. The International Speedway Corp., which owns and manages NASCAR race tracks, has spent more than $1.1 million lobbying Congress since 2008. Over the same period, NASCAR spent more than $300,000 on lobbying efforts, which included a push to “make permanent the depreciation classification.” Supporters in Congress and industry groups have argued that the tax break is necessary to “maintain the current standard expected by our competitors and fans.” According to estimates by the Joint Committee on Taxation, the so-called NASCAR loophole will cost taxpayers $46 million this year and an additional $95 million through 2017. A spokesman for the International Speedway Corp., Charles Talbert, said the industry is simply seeking to preserve a tax designation it has relied on for years. He said in an email that racetracks had always used the accelerated depreciation schedule, but Congress had specifically written it into law after the Internal Revenue Service argued that it was improper in the early 2000s. Though Congress was willing to sign off on all these business-friendly goodies, legislative leaders couldn’t muster enthusiasm for extending the payroll tax holiday, which had cost the federal government $120 billion each year in lost revenue. As a result, a worker who earns $50,000 a year will now pay at least $80 per month in taxes. The payroll tax increase will affect as many as 160 million people. These bullsh*t excuses corporations can throw around in order to get a tax break are inexcusable. The Senate, Congress, and The Pres should all be ashamed of themselves. Images via tumblr
