‘Workaholics’ Stars School Us On Backbreaking Comedy

‘It’s weird when people say it’s an accident, ’cause I kinda meant to do it,’ Blake Anderson says of stunt gone wrong in MTV’s ‘First Date.’ By Rya Backer Cast of “Workaholics” Photo: MTV News As one of the co-stars of Comedy Central’s “Workaholics,” Blake Anderson has made his way into the hearts and televisions of many an American as Blake Henderson, the goofy member of the show’s trio who’s not above spending his week’s paycheck on a coat that looks like a bear, or talking his friends into foregoing their Thanksgiving plans to spend a weekend at a Hedonism resort in Jamaica. So when we sat down with Anderson following the castmembers’ “First Date” shoot, which premieres Tuesday on MTV.com, it was refreshing to know that his quirks and sense of humor — and those of his fellow Workaholics — are not just a stage persona. We asked for details on how he recently made headlines jumping off a roof and landing (not especially gracefully) onto a Comedy Central-branded beer pong table, reportedly fracturing his spine in the process. Oh, and Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator was there too — having a good laugh at Anderson’s expense. “It’s weird when people say it’s an accident, ’cause I kinda meant to do it,” he explained about the fall. “I was drunk and it was stupid. Don’t jump off roofs into hard surface areas.” His castmates (they are all good friends in real life), however, had a different perspective on the situation: “It was all CGI, it was a ploy to get more viewers. Thank you for viewing,” explained Adam DeVine, whose “Workaholics” character, Adam Demamp, was named one of MTV News’ Top 50 TV Characters of 2011 . The carnage, however, appears to be very real, with Anderson sporting a fresh scar from the incident on the left side of his back. Though DeVine once again refutes its veracity, asking, “… or is it CGI’d?” So exactly what was recent VMA winner Tyler, the Creator doing at his place? “We have those little rugrats runnin’ around at our parties sometimes,” Anderson said of his friendship with Odd Future. Fellow member Taco appeared in the show’s second-season premiere. Despite their ups and downs, so to speak, the groups remain friendly — despite some fighting words from the cast. “You’re not invited anymore, Tyler. And that’s on you, bro,” DeVine exclaimed. “Yeah, go ‘create’ some sh–,” added Anders Holm. You can see more with the cast of “Workaholics” on Tuesday when their episode of “First Date” goes live on MTV.com!

Das Racist: A ‘First Date’ Without The Awkward Silence

MTV News’ Rya Backer sits down with the ‘very funny’ trio. By Rya Backer Das Racist and MTV News’ Rya Backer Photo: MTV News Just admit it, the first time you caught wind of Das Racist , you thought they were a joke. It was hard not to, what with their first single, 2009’s “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell,” being about … well, the title pretty much says it all. But in the time since they first earned such renown and critical love (our very own James Montgomery was a fan ), MCs Himanshu “Heems” Suri and Victor “Kool A.D.” Vazquez and hype man Ashok “Dapwell” Kondabolu have proved to possess more than just a few stoney quips. In 2010, the trio’s amazingly titled mixtapes “Sit Down, Man” and “Shut Up, Dude” earned them even more critical and industry clout (the former featured production from the likes of Boi-1da and Diplo). Their playful, jokey rhymes delivered messages and references beyond the likes of their breakout and more along the lines of their well-educated pedigree (the MCs met at Wesleyan) and range of heritages (Heems and Dapwell are Indian, Kool A.D. is of Afro-Cuban — and a little bit of Jewish — descent). Their latest effort, 2011’s Relax, made its way onto many a music writer’s top 10. Its single “Michael Jackson” features a hook so infectious that you’ll get it out of your head about as soon as the image of the Michael Jackson impersonator featured in the video leaves your memory (read: not soon). And with all that said, acknowledging how much they’ve successfully proved to be far more than just a trio of funny guys, Das Racist, at their core, are a trio of very, very, very funny guys. It’s safe to assume that the only serious answer given on this First Date was where they were all born. From there the conversation snowballed to the whereabouts of D’Angelo, Patrick Swayze, that time an underground rapper gave them free weed at their show, the odd “Sex and the City” plotline and their main hobby — as Kool A.D. put it, “making controversial anti-rap music,” to which Dapwell replied “that isn’t a hobby, that’s just our job. And that’s not even my job, I don’t even know what I do.” Of course, that all ended up on the cutting room floor (for now), but what made it in hopefully illustrates that these guys are above all very good friends and that the best is yet to come from Das Racist, even if their five-year plans aren’t at all alike. Kelly Clarkson To Drop iTunes EP

Nine-track EP includes tracks from Stronger and revamped versions of older songs. By Jocelyn Vena Kelly Clarkson Photo: Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images Kelly Clarkson is reimagining some of her songs for a special iTunes sessions album. The nine-track EP will drop December 27, with pre-orders kicking off Tuesday (December 13). According to a press release, the album will include three songs from Clarkson’s latest album, Stronger, including its lead single, “Mr. Know It All,” along with “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger)” and “You Can’t Win.” She will also kick it old-school with revamped versions of “Never Again,” “Since U Been Gone,” “Why Don’t You Try” and “My Life Would Suck Without You.” The final two tracks include the holiday classic “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” and an interview with the star. Clarkson’s Stronger 2012 world tour is slated to kick off January 13. She will start in Connecticut at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods before making her way around North America, with stops in New York, Austin, Atlanta and Los Angeles. The tour will end April 10 in San Diego. Stronger, Clarkson’s fifth studio album, dropped in October and debuted at #2, right behind Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto. Clarkson is readying the release of her next single, “What Doesn’t Kill You.” “There were a few different titles that were going around, and I think the reason why we came up with Stronger was just because every song was about empowerment and almost, like, overcoming stuff,” Clarkson told MTV News about the album title. “So, even if it was a bad situation and a sad song, it was about overcoming that. … So I think that’s why [we named it that], and I think after 10 years of doing it, you feel a little stronger personally and musically. People know you better. It’s just easier, I think.” Is your favorite Kelly Clarkson hit included on the new iTunes album? Let us know in the comments! ‘First Date’ With Outasight: The Pepsi Connection

Singer’s ‘Tonight Is the Night’ is featured in Pepsi campaign alongside footage of Kanye, Britney and Michael Jackson. By Steven Roberts Outasight In all honesty, most people are probably more familiar with Outasight ‘s song “Tonight Is the Night” than they are with him. And that is in no way a knock on Outasight. After all, the song is a big part of Pepsi’s “Who’s Next” campaign, having been featured in the soft drink company’s latest legacy commercial, which includes footage from past Pepsi ads featuring Kanye West , Britney Spears and the King of Pop, Michael Jackson . But hopefully those commercials will start to win Outasight some attention. The song actually debuted on the second episode of Fox’s reality competition show “The X Factor,” and it’s been slowly gaining momentum ever since. The Dori Oskowitz-directed video for the pop, party anthem was dropped early last month, and it features Outasight and friends preparing, embarking and wrapping up an incredible — or typical — night of fun in New York City. The Yonkers MC and singer is already seven mixtapes deep in his relatively short career, and his still-unnamed debut album is expected next year. He’s been making music for as long as he can remember, but it wasn’t until he discovered he could combine both of his talents of singing and rapping that he found he could really be Outasight. “Singing and rapping were separate entities,” Outasight said. “Then Mos Def and artists like that inspired me. I saw you can do it — you can sing and rap and make it gel. I started taking my craft more seriously and just kept working on it. It’s just a natural thing. It’s never planned out. It kind of flows.” Related Videos MTV News First Date Related Artists Outasight

Romancing The Ride. Cycling is Good for the Heart.

Photo: Insider Hobart This post is part of series written by TreeHugger contributors about trading in your car for a bike for trips that are two miles or less in distance. The series is sponsored by the Clif 2-Mile Challenge . I was late, I was late, for a most important date. A first date, and we were catching up to see a movie by Sydney Harbour. But when I made it to the bus stop, my bus had already left. I could see it blocks away, citybound, without me. I raced up the hill back home and quickly grabbed my bi… Read the full story on TreeHugger
