Ben Affleck Says Republicans ‘Had A Chance’ But Gives Low-Key Obama Support

Not afraid to show off his political side, Ben Affleck is giving his take on the current U.S. Presidential campaign. Hitting the road promoting his political thriller Argo , the director and star of the film compared Republican nominee to past hopefuls who did not make it to the White House. A past ardent supporter of liberal causes and a full-fledged Obama fan four years ago, Affleck only offered tepid support for the incumbent. “I think Republicans really had a chance to win,” Affleck told A.P. during an interview about Argo . And they kind of ended up with like a sort of Mike Dukakis, Al Gore, Bob Dole type – who just couldn’t get people to see him as a real person somehow. Romney just had such trouble coming off as just like the kind of person you see at the grocery store. And I truly believe that has cost him the election.” Affleck went on to add that it looks “quite unlikely” that the Republican hopeful will unseat Obama, saying “negative momentum” can at some point cause a downward spiral for a campaign. “You start making mistakes and then all your advisers tell you, ‘You’ve got to raise your arms more!’ ‘You’ve got to talk deeper.’ So people just get into becoming robotic.” Still, if Affleck shares the same enthusiasm for Obama as in the first go-around, he is clearly holding back, saying that with hindsight his opinions have changed. “”I voted for Obama last time although he got to be all things to all people then,” Affleck said. ”And now he’s got a record which makes it really different … I obviously have more complicated feelings.” Affleck has often thrown his hat in the political sphere, doing lobbying in Washington and traveling abroad for various causes. He’s also said he wouldn’t rule out a future run for an elected office in the future. And his latest film, which debuted last month at the Toronto International Film Festival has already prompted talk of possibly multiple Oscar nominations. The film recalls an international crisis that many attribute for the failed re-election bid of Jimmy Carter in 1980, ushering in the Reagan era. Directed and starring Affleck, along with Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin and John Goodman, Argo is set as militants take over the U.S. embassy in Tehran in the aftermath of the 1979 Iranian Revolution. While 52 Americans are held, six others escape and hide in the Canadian ambassador’s residence. The film recalls a plan hatched by the C.I.A. and specialist Tony Mendez (played by Affleck) to help the six to escape Iran. [ Source: Associated Press ]

Apparently Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, and Julie Delpy went ahead and filmed Before Midnight , their sequel to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset , without telling anyone about it. But there’s something about the loose intimacy of Céline and Jesse’s ambling, every now and again relationship that makes the idea of the trio making their next movie in secret so fitting. The trio, who share writing credits again after earning a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for Before Sunset , issued the following statement: “It’s great to be back together again, this time in beautiful Greece to revisit the lives of Celine and Jesse nine years after Jesse was about to miss his flight.” [ Deadline ]

Exclusive: Extraordinary AIDS Activism Doc How To Survive A Plague Unleashes Poster

How to Survive a Plague turned on the water-works and other outpourings of emotion when it debuted at Sundance earlier this year. Its subjects, the driving-forces behind AIDS activist groups ACT-Up (the AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power) and TAG (Treatment Action Group), took matters into their own hands against a massive tide of fear, discrimination and government failure to deal with the disease that ravaged the gay community in the ’80s and ’90s. Director David France profiles the heroes of the movement who moved the needle in forging treatment and official recognition against extraordinary odds, and today Movieline has your first look at the official poster. Sundance Selects will debut the feature September 21st following the film’s healthy festival run to date. Below, find the poster designed by Sam Smyth and the trailer along with the official synopsis: How to Survive a Plague is the story of the brave young men and women who successfully reversed the tide of an epidemic, demanded the attention of a fearful nation and stopped AIDS from becoming a death sentence. This improbable group of activists bucked oppression and, with no scientific training, infiltrated government agencies and the pharmaceutical industry, helping to identify promising new medication and treatments and move them through trials and into drugstores in record time. In the process, they saved their own lives and ended the darkest days of a veritable plague, while virtually emptying AIDS wards in American hospitals in the process. The powerful story of their fight is a classic tale of empowerment and activism that has since inspired movements for change in everything from breast cancer research to Occupy Wall Street. Their story stands as a powerful inspiration to future generations, a road map, and a call to arms. This is how you change the world. Official Selection: Sundance Film Festival, New Directors/New films, San Francisco International Film Festival, Provincetown International Film Festival, Outfest Documentary Centerpiece, Seattle International Film Festival. Liz & Dick: Lindsay Lohan Channels Three Iconic Elizabeth Taylor Looks

When Lindsay Lohan signed on to play Elizabeth Taylor in Lifetime’s Liz & Dick it was tough to know what to expect. Now that three new photos from the tele-biopic have landed, we have our answer: Behold, LiLo dressed up as Liz Taylor circa 1960 on the set of Cleopatra , LiLo as Liz Taylor marrying Richard Burton in 1964, and DEAR GOD, LILO AS LIZ TAYLOR WITH GIANT POOFY ’80S HAIR AND SHOULDER PADS. Guys, poofy ’80s hair was not part of the deal. It’s the Joan Collinsesque car shot that I find most mesmerizing: Art imitating real paparazzi-hounded life, that downturned gaze, the angst emanating from that pout, that giant helmet of hair in orbit around her head. November 3 can’t come fast enough, though that does give you two months to stockpile all the booze and popcorn and Aqua Net you’ll need to plan those Liz & Dick viewing parties… [Lifetime via Vulture ]

Chloe Moretz Makes A Bloody Good Carrie In First Look At Remake Of Classic Horror Film

It’s time to ruin prom for a whole new generation of teenagers!   EW.com has posted an exclusive photo  of a blood-soaked Chloe Moretz f rom Boys Don’t Cry director Kimberly Peirce’s remake of   Carrie . Moretz gave me a serious case of deja vu when I saw the photo of her as the title character of Stephen King’s classic 1974 horror novel about an alienated teen with telekinetic powers and a seriously wacko mother. Sissy Spacek,  who played the original Carrie White was fantastic in the role, but she was also in her mid 20s at the time. At 15, Moretz seems more age-appropriate to play the role of a high schooler. Julianne Moore plays Carrie’s mom in a role that Piper Laurie played in the original film.. EW reports that Moore intends for her portrayal to retain some humanity. “This woman has clearly had a psychotic break, perhaps several,” Moore tells the publication. “But what’s sad about it for me is that she’s clearly sick and here’s this poor child in the thrall of this person who is seriously ill.” Peirce is reportedly modernizing the story for her remake, which will be released in March 2013, so it’s unclear whether Moretz comes to be bathed in blood for the same reasons that Spacek did: a cruel high-school prank that results in Carrie unleashing her telekinetic powers and ensuring that there will be no one in her class left alive to sign her year book.  The good news: she also destroyed the gym. Moretz told EW that she was under some pressure while shooting the scene: ”We only have, like, four chances to get it right,” she said. “Because that stuff stains your hair.” Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Daniel Day Lewis’ Lincoln Hits In Black & White

A pensive Daniel Day-Lewis turned Abraham Lincoln appears in this black and white poster of DreamWorks’ Lincoln due to hit U.S. theaters in November – actually only days after the 44th POTUS or the 45th POTUS wins the U.S. election. Directed by Steven Spielberg , Lincoln spotlights the 16th President of the United States during his final months in office. On set, Spielberg revealed that he’d refer to Day-Lewis as “Mr. President” along with referring to all the film’s actors by their character names, ML noted via a report by EW when the first color images of Lincoln appeared two weeks ago. If the sneak looks are any indication, an Oscar-nomination for Make Up and even Costume Design cannot be far off the mark. A quick look at Lincoln’s actual beard in an actual photo of the President shows his beard to appear less whiskery in the mid-jaw area. And voila, such is the facial hair as it manifests in the Lincoln version of Lincoln. Though obviously some time before audiences will first see Lincoln , with two-time Academy Award-winner Daniel Day-Lewis as the Civil War leader, more Oscar nominations will likely be in the offing come January. And who knows what Joseph Gordon-Levitt will do as Robert Todd Lincoln (the First Son) and Sally Field as the sometimes maligned wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. Dreamworks revealed its official log-line for the feature: Steven Spielberg directs two-time Academy Award® winner Daniel Day-Lewis in “Lincoln,” a revealing drama that focuses on the 16th President’s tumultuous final months in office. In a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. With the moral courage and fierce determination to succeed, his choices during this critical moment will change the fate of generations to come.   Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook and Tommy Lee Jones, “Lincoln” is produced by Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, with a screenplay by Tony Kushner, based in part on the book “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln” by Doris Kearns Goodwin. The DreamWorks Pictures/Twentieth Century Fox film, in association with Participant Media, releases in U.S. theaters exclusive on November 9, 2012, with expansion on November 16, 2012.

Naomi Watts as Princess Diana: First Look at Biopic Caught in Flight

Having replaced one-time star Jessica Chastain in the Princess Diana biopic Caught in Flight , Naomi Watts was photographed on the set of the now-filming project, and the resemblance is… uncanny. Maybe it’s just the layered period blonde perm or the boxy sensible suit ‘n’ tights, but Watts looks to have slid quite fittingly into the skin of the late Princess of Wales, who embarks on a torrid love affair with Pakistani-born heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan (played by LOST ‘s Naveen Andrews) in the ’90s-set drama. The film (directed by Downfall ‘s Oliver Hirshbiegel) depicts Princess Di and Khan’s secret two-year relationship, which ended just months before her tragic death in 1997. According to previous reports , Diana “is shown as a damaged person who stalks the doctor after he ends the affair.” Fun. Can’t wait! [ Daily Mail ]

Promo Trailer for Kristen Stewart’s Mother’s Transgender Prison Movie K-11 Debuts

Twilight fandom extends interest by association to every cast member’s extra- Twilight projects, and sometimes that vampire bump pays off for relatives, too. Case in point: K-11 , an intense-looking prison drama that’s gotten considerable exposure from the fact that it’s directed by Kristen Stewart ‘s mother, Jules. (The erstwhile Bella Swan was also once attached to star in the film, which, watching this first look at K-11 , would have been very interesting). Also: Goran Visnjic stars! Roll the promo. Oh, did I mention K-11 is about a Hollywood record producer who wakes up in jail after a bender, only to find he’s been placed in the special section for homosexuals and transgender prisoners where Deebo from Friday /The President from The Fifth Element (AKA Tiny Lister) lives? And that Mexican soap star Kate del Castillo rules the coop as a terrifying transsexual named Mousey? Also in this movie: D.B. Sweeney, Ginger from True Blood , Portia Doubleday, Jason Mewes, and reportedly the voice of Kristen Stewart, whose brother Cameron Stewart also appears making his feature debut. Director Stewart Tweeted out a link to the promo trailer from her Twitter account, where she also recently Tweeted about buying her daughter a baguette in Cannes . The film screened there earlier this week for buyers. [via @RealJulesStew ]
