New Company Sells Invasive Carp Back To Asia As Food

An Illinois fishing company is helping to tackle the Asian carp invasion by marketing them as a delicious culinary treat to food companies in China. Big River Fish Company, based in Pearl, Illinois, decided that instead of lamenting the way that Asian carp were taking over Great Lakes fishing areas, they would turn it into a profitable business opportunity. Achieving sizes of up to 4-feet in length and 100 pounds each, carp destroy ecosystems by gorging themselves, and starving out other species. Ross Harano, the international marketing director for Big River Fish Co., said that by marketing the fish as “wild” and “unpolluted” they've be able to attract attention of high-end restaurants looking to augment their fish selection. Of course, the Great Lakes are home to their fair share of pollution, but they're relatively clean when compared to Chinese waters. In June, the Associated Press reported that, for the first time ever, a 20-pound bighead carp was caught by a fisherman in Illinois's Lake Calumet, on the South Side of Chicago–beyond the electric fences meant to keep them out, and only six miles from Lake Michigan. The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation recently pledged $500,000 to find environmental solutions to prevent this ravenous species from threatening the Great Lakes' ecosystem and jeopardizing the region's $7 billion annual sports fishing industry. The Big River Fish Company recently received $2 million in federal funding to expand its processing plant after securing a contract with a company in China for 30 million pounds of carp meat (NPR). http://www.care2.com/causes/environment/blog/new-company-sells-invasive-carp-bac… added by: Radical_Centrist

Touch Paw is two video games in one – One for dogs. One for cats. That's right… The games are for dogs & cats. To play. On your iPad. Touch Paw Dogs animates through a series of “positive” & “negative” images. If the image on the screen is positive touch the screen with your nose or paw. You receive one point for each correct answer. You lose one point for each incorrect answer. Ask your human to give you a treat when you get an answer right. Touch Paw Cats is a virtual fish tank. Tap the screen with your paw to startle & scare the fish. Eventually the fish will calm down so you can scare them again. Don't worry, they won't mind – They're virtual! Touch Paw is really goofy, fun and best of all, free. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/touch-paw/id403294344 added by: mjn

North Sea Fisheries Throw Away Half Their Catch

Photo: Guardian North Sea fishermen throw away almost a million dead and dying fish every year. Most are tossed back because they are too small or the wrong kind or will make the fishing boats over their quota. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall , national treasure, celebrity chef and serious food campaigner was so outraged at this “insane waste” that he has started a campaign, Fish Fight, to get this practice banned. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Industrial Monoculture Cleans Up: Greenwash, or Mainstreaming Green? (Video)

Image credit: OnEarth Magazine When I wrote about the NRDC’s new Stewardship Index for Specialty Crops, and asked whether industrial monoculture was the real path to sustainable farming , the response from many of our readers was unsurprisingly lackluster. “Lipstick on a pig”, said Bert Harvey. “A misguided attempt at prolonging a faulty paradigm,” said John. So I’m unlikely to get much thanks for posting a video showing just what one of … Read the full story on TreeHugger

10 Real Life Sea Monsters (Slideshow)

Photo via News.com.au It’s time to get out of the water. Not all the fish in the sea are as cute and lovable as Nemo and Dory: Some of them are downright monstrous. From two-foot-long isopods and eyeless crustaceans to the skeletal anglerfish and human-sized jellyfish, the deep waters of the world contain countless species that we know very little about. Here are 10 of the scariest — and sometimes gentlest — sea monsters in the oceans today.

Weekday Vegetarian: Corn on the Cob with Maple-Chipotle Glaze

Photo: Kelly Rossiter This is the time of the year I always look forward to. I love it when dinner can consist of nothing more than a couple of ears of corn , a plate of sliced tomatoes and a green salad . There’s nothing easier to make, and it’s a totally satisfying simple supper. This week is going to be a celebration of corn at the Weekday Vegetarian, but I had to start with my favourite way to eat it, straight off the cob… Read the full story on TreeHugger
