“When I bust out with that Styles P record, ya’ll not gonna call me fake,” Banks tells MTV News days before she ‘quits rapping.’ By Nadeska Alexis Azealia Banks Photo: MTV News Is Azealia Banks really saying goodbye to her rap career? Earlier this week, the Harlem native deleted her Twitter account and announced that she will now focus on being a ‘vocalist’ instead of a rapper . But just last week she told MTV News that her upcoming Fantasea mixtape would be heavy on hip-hop, with a major feature from Styles P. Banks announced her resignation from rap via a new Tumblr account, writing, “No longer wishing to be a rapper. i never was. … and as soon as i started paying attention to bullsh– urban media, i started getting myself in trouble. From now on i’m a vocalist, and will not be associating myself with the ‘rap game’ … or whatever the f— that means.” Oddly enough, the new proclamation comes just days after Banks revealed to MTV News that Fantasea, slated for a July debut, will include a feature from Styles P that she was thrilled to get. “It’s gonna be hip-hop, there’s a lot of hip-hop on it,” Banks said of the mixtape. “I have a track with Styles P on there, which I’m really excited about because Styles killed it, killed it, killed it.” “It’s so New York and it’s so raw and it’s so just … everything that needs to be said,” she added, going on to address the criticism she’s received from the hip-hop community so far. “I’m that rap girl who’s out here and doesn’t have another rapper behind her, but she’s got all this mouth and she’s all over the place. So [this collaboration] was cool for me [because I’m like] ‘What ya’ll gonna say now, when I bust out with that Styles P record?’ Ya’ll not gon’ call me fake and make fun of me for having one song. Yeah, I make lil dance music and ya’ll got jokes, whatever — watch when I come out with the Styles P record.” Banks hasn’t been too warmly received by all urban media, but some of that has to do with her reputation for taking open shots at artists like Grand Hustle’s Iggy Azalea — a rap girl who does have another rapper behind her — and by association, veteran T.I. So despite Banks’ claim that she will quit rapping, there will still be hip-hop on Fantasea, and she even admitted that she’s hoping for more rap features outside of Styles P. “Schedules are weird and with as much as I have going on, it’s hard, but I like to really collaborate,” she said. “When I’m collaborating with someone I want us to be in the same room and feed off each other. I don’t wanna just send you the track.” One thing we do know is when it comes to Banks’ outspoken nature, nothing much is going to change. “Rap dudes, keep talking sh– and I’ma keep popping sh–,” she said. “I’m just reactive and I say what I have to say and I keep it moving. … It’s not going to change.” Do you think Azealia Banks is really done with rap? Wayne Coyne talks to MTV News about recording ‘Thunder Up!’ for his hometown team as they prepare to take on Heat. By James Montgomery James Montgomery and Wayne Coyne Photo: MTV News Last month, before his epic war of words with Erykah Badu and after his hometown Oklahoma City Thunder fell behind 2-0 in their Western Conference Finals matchup with the seemingly unstoppable San Antonio Spurs, Flaming Lips’ mastermind Wayne Coyne was still upbeat. And not about Badu. No, despite the (then) overwhelming odds against them, Coyne was confident that the Thunder would not only rally to defeat the Spurs, but would go on to win the NBA championship. In fact, “confident” was probably an understatement. “Of course, what do you mean ‘Can they win?’ ” he responded to MTV News when we asked about the Thunder’s chances of taking home the NBA crown. “They will win.” And we all know how things turned out. The Thunder staged a Lazarus-like comeback against the Spurs — who had been riding a 20-game winning streak — and won the series in six games. Now, it’s on to the NBA Finals, where they’ll face off against the playoff-tested Miami Heat and their trio of stars: LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Game one of the Finals tips off Tuesday night (June 12) in Oklahoma City. Can the Thunder’s epic run culminate in the NBA championship? Well, we know what Coyne thinks … and he’s not alone. He and the Lips recently re-recorded one of their signature songs — “Race for the Prize,” off 1999’s The Soft Bulletin — as an anthem for the team, a rousing version dubbed “Thunder Up! Racing for the Prize,” with the same crashing drums and keening synths of the original, but sees Coyne changing the lyrics to reflect his admiration for the squad. “Theirs is to win/ We win with them/ They’ll keep fighting for Oklahoma!” he sings, while the shouted refrain of “Thunder Up!” is repeated in the background. The whole thing ends, appropriately enough, with a booming thunderclap of electronic noise. It’s not known whether “Thunder Up!” will be played in Oklahoma City’s Chesapeake Arena during game one of the Finals, but Lips multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd has certainly been doing his part to make it happen: He’s tweeted the track to Thunder guard Russell Westbrook, encouraging him to share it with all his “OKC Thunder bros.” Like most of the city, Drozd’s wrapped up in the thrill of the NBA Finals, noting , “There’s already extra traffic and excitement in the air at OKC airport.” Related Artists The Flaming Lips

Band is aiming to top Jay-Z’s live concert record during the June 27 O Music Awards live stream. By Gil Kaufman The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/Getty Images It takes a village to topple a record. That seems to be the thinking behind the Flaming Lips ‘ efforts to gather an army of musical cohorts to help them take aim at Jay-Z’s record for the most live concerts in 24 hours. As part of a record attempt that will take place over 24 hours during the June 27 O Music Awards , the Lips will try to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records by playing shows in eight different cities. We can now reveal that they will get some support from an eclectic group of musicians that includes festival favorites Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, modern bluesman Gary Clark Jr., country singer Hunter Hayes, and indie rock acts Givers, New Fumes, Neon Indian, and Grimes. Beginning June 27, the O Music Awards will play out across all of MTV’s screens and linear networks in the form of the world’s first 24-hour award-show live stream via a historic and hectic bus ride through the Mississippi Delta, the birthplace of rock and roll. Two-time O Music Award nominees and multiple Grammy winners Flaming Lips will board a vintage tour bus named Endeavor and zigzag across the region in an attempt to break the world record currently held by Jay-Z for the most live concerts in 24 hours. More support acts will be named soon, and each will play a full set before making way for the Lips to take the stage for their mini-sets with unique collaborations and special guests. Tickets for the shows go on sale Thursday (June 7) and can be purchased through the individual venues. Partial proceeds from the show will be donated to VH1’s Save the Music Foundation . Also, the entire show will be streamed live on OMusicAwards.com and accessible on all platforms including mobile and tablets. “I don’t remember if I was asked or if I volunteered. … But I’ve accepted the job of not driving but commandeering the Magical Mystery Merry Prankster bus,” Lips frontman Wayne Coyne told MTV News. “I’ve accepted the attempt at breaking the world record of performing eight shows in 24 hours. And I’ve explained to the music freaks at MTV, VH1 and CMT that I am not a host. … But I always liked the way Jerry Lewis would get all sweaty toward the end of his yearly telethon. To play and sing Flaming Lips songs at eight in the morning, well … I’m open to new experiences.” During the 24-hour live stream, 24 awards will be presented to winners. Fans can vote now up until the show via the O Music Awards website in a wide assortment of categories that include Must Follow Artist on Twitter, Best Online Concert Experience, Most Adorable Viral Star, Fan Army FTW, Best Music App and Digital Genius Award. Nearly 10 million votes have been cast since voting kicked off on May 23. You never know what’s going to happen on the live stream, where the Lips will be constantly “on,” as cameras follow them on the bus, on the stage and everywhere in between. Along the way, the band will meet up with fans and presenters who will dole out awards and, of course, deal with all the pitfalls and unexpected detours that a multi-state road trip entails — flat tires, stops at musical monuments, and perhaps the occasional music-making special guests and hitchhikers. The day before the big show, June 26, the Lips will release a physical version of The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, the previously digital-only album featuring unique collaborations with Yoko Ono, Nick Cave, Bon Iver, Ke$ha and an exclusive new track recorded with Ghostland Observatory’s Aaron Behrens. Producer Dr. Luke unveils a snippet of a song from her upcoming album. By James Montgomery Ke$ha Photo: Getty Images It’s not exactly “balls-out irreverent rock and roll” — quite the opposite, in fact — but with one 40-second snippet, Ke$ha is serving notice that her new album is most definitely going to be a departure. On Wednesday (June 6), frequent Ke$h collaborator Dr. Luke gave fans a sneak peek at a song from her long-in-the-works new album, an all-too-brief preview that features her cooing about a lover’s prowess — “When you take my body to the stars/ I believe it/ Boy, this love is supernatural/ Can you feel it?” over a bed of shimmering synths and knotty bass that gradually builds to a twisting, rapidly contrasting electronic break. It’s the kind of high-gloss production she largely avoided on her breakthrough Animal album, and while we certainly can’t figure out how the track fits in with her other collaborations (she’s reportedly worked with everyone from Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne to Iggy Pop on the still-untitled new album), the new track certainly showcases her maturation. And thanks to Ke$h herself, at least we know what the new track is about: having sex with ghosts. Yes, just hours after Dr. Luke leaked the snippet, Ke$ha took to her Twitter account to mock-chastise her producer, writing : “You leaked my song about me having sexy time with a ghost, @thedoctorluke,” she wrote. “Now everyone knows I get it on with ghosts!” Somehow, that doesn’t surprise us. There’s still no firm release date for Ke$ha’s new album, which she began working on in February. But, from the sound of one snippet, at least, it sounds like things are progressing quickly. And, apparently, ghostly. What do you think of the sneak peek? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Ke$ha

Late Minnesota indie rapper was half of the group Eyedea & Abilities. By Gil Kaufman Eyedea Photo: flickr.com/theotherchristianlundberg A month after his shocking death, the Ramsey County, Minnesota, medical examiner’s office has reported that indie rapper Mike “Eyedea” Larsen died of a drug overdose. According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the cause of death for St. Paul native Larsen was “opiate toxicity,” with no specific drugs mentioned as contributing factors. The overdose was ruled accidental. The day after her son’s death, Larsen’s mother, Kathy Averill, said Eyedea did not suffer from any addictions. Eyedea, half of the popular underground hip-hop duo Eyedea & Abilities, was remembered at a public service in St. Paul on October 28 that was attended by more than 2,000 people. A sold-out musical tribute to the rapper at Minneapolis’ First Avenue club took place November 9, which would have been Eyedea’s 29th birthday. Among the friends who performed at the show were fellow Twin Cities MCs Slug and Carnage and longtime collaborator Kristoff Krane, Aesop Rock, Doseone, DJ Abilities and former Moldy Peaches member Kimya Dawson. The Minneapolis City Pages reported that the show was full of emotional tributes, including a touching one from Alexei and Channy Moon Casselle of the group Roma di Luna. They performed a duet of Bob Dylan’s “He Was a Friend of Mine,” and before leaving the stage, Alexei “cleared his throat and spoke into the microphone, fighting back tears. ‘The last time I saw Mikey, we were working on a new song together. At one point, he sat down on the couch, picked up a guitar, and started playing this song,’ ” Alexei said. The couple then played a cover of the Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize?” that brought tears to more than a few eyes in the crowd. “It was one of the saddest, most beautiful moments I’ve ever witnessed at a live show,” wrote the reviewer. Share your thoughts for Eyedea’s friends and family in the comments. Related Artists Eyedea & Abilities Eyedea

Festival roster includes more than 90 acts spanning many genres. By James Montgomery Jay-Z Photo: Dave M. Benett/ Getty Images Well, it took all day, but finally, on Tuesday night (February 9), organizers revealed the full lineup for the 2010 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, scheduled for June 10-13 in Manchester, Tennessee. Jay-Z, Dave Matthews Band, Kings of Leon, Stevie Wonder, Weezer and Flaming Lips top the bill for this year’s ‘Roo, a list of more than 90 acts spanning genres and eras. There are genuine legends (Jimmy Cliff, John Fogerty), established rock acts (the Dead Weather), hip-hop talent (Wale, Nas, Kid Cudi), electro heavyweights (LCD Soundsystem, Thievery Corporation) and bands that hearken back to the festival’s earlier, decidedly jammy routes (Medeski, Martin and Wood, the Disco Biscuits), not to mention the annual WTFs (Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, Darryl Hall with Chromeo). All in all, it’s a rather jam-packed four days of music. Rather than announce the full lineup, organizers broke from tradition and revealed each performer individually on the Bonnaroo MySpace page , a decision that was as time-consuming as it was brilliant. According to a spokesperson for the festival, the full lineup will swell to some 125 acts and over 20 comedians, performing on 13 different stages. Tickets for the 2010 edition of Bonnaroo are already on sale at the fest’s Web site , with a four-day pass costing $234.50. There are also RV passes available, and a super-deluxe “Total Access” package, which offers 24-concierge service, onstage viewing for all performances and complimentary food. As in previous years, organizers are also giving attendees the option to purchase tickets on an installment plan. The full list of confirmed artists for the 2010 Bonnaroo festival:

Norah Jones, Wale, Flaming Lips, the xx also announced in gradual MySpace reveal. By James Montgomery Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo Photo: Chris Weeks/ WireImage Jay-Z, Weezer, and the Flaming Lips are among the first batch of artists confirmed for the 2010 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, to be held June 10-13 in — as always — Manchester, Tennessee. Artists are being announced in a series of rolling reveals that will continue throughout the day on Bonnaroo’s MySpace page . Tickets for the fest are on sale now through its official site , with a four-day pass running $234.50. An RV pass (if you want to experience the fest in luxury) will cost an extra $150. As in previous years, Bonnaroo is also offering attendees the opportunity to purchase tickets on an installment plan. Other early confirmations for Bonnaroo 2010 are Norah Jones, comedian/ Grammy-winning bluegrass enthusiast Steve Martin (with his Steep Canyon Rangers), Wale, Regina Spektor, John Fogerty, the Avett Brothers, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Ingrid Michaelson, Bassnectar, Phoenix and hotly tipped Brits the xx. Jay-Z has already been announced as a headliner for the 2010 Coachella Festival, to be held April 16-18 in Indio, California. The Flaming Lips will be joined by Stardeath and the White Dwarves (the band fronted by Lips’ main man Wayne Coyne’s nephew) and — much like they did in a raucous Oklahoma City New Year’s Eve show — the groups will be performing Pink Floyd’s epic Dark Side of the Moon album. News of Weezer’s confirmation actually leaked earlier in the day, when the band tweeted that they would be performing at the 2010 ‘Roo. Through various online sources, the fest’s other rumored acts include the Dave Matthews Band and Georgia metallers Baroness. But the only way to get the latest confirmations is to head over to Bonnaroo’s MySpace page, where a new band is being announced every five minutes.
