‘The Amazing Spider-Man’: The Early Reviews Are In!

U.K. critics are divided down the middle on Sony’s ‘Spider-Man’ reboot, starring Andrew Garfield as the friendly neighborhood hero. By Josh Wigler Andrew Garfield in “The Amazing Spider-Man” Photo: Peter Parker swings back into U.S. theaters on July 3 with “The Amazing Spider-Man,” this time played by British up-and-comer Andrew Garfield — and while Stateside critics have stayed hush-hush on their feelings about the “Amazing” reboot for now, our friends across the pond have been more outspoken with their reactions. Several U.K. news outlets including The Guardian and Empire have published their reviews of director Marc Webb’s “Spider-Man” reboot, following the film’s London premiere on Monday. The consensus is not unlike Parker’s own superhero career: rocky at points, healthy at times and flat-out “amazing” in other areas. Keep reading for the good and the bad from the early “Amazing Spider-Man” reviews! Webb & The Web-Spinner “Webb successfully treads a fine line between keeping the hardcore superhero-movie fans happy and injecting a dose of meaningful affect. Parker is generally reckoned to be the most ‘relatable’ figure in the superhero canon, but the pastel-bright synthetics of the earlier movies did little to dispel the sense that the comic-book world could only construct its characters out of clunking great blocks of melodrama. In re-engineering Parker into the introspective, uncertain male more typical of his previous film, Webb is aided by a terrific performance from Andrew Garfield, who brings a genial unflappability that allows him to negotiate the often-ludicrous demands of the superhero plotline. At the same time, Webb also shows an unarguable facility for the more traditional action elements of the story, and the 3D certainly helps: he pulls off some properly nauseating shots as Parker dives off skyscrapers, rescues kids from falling, and the like.” — Andrew Pulver, The Guardian Toning It Down “The shadow of ‘Batman Begins’ looms as ‘Amazing’ opens, the gold standard of origin-skewed reboots riskily invoked. Parker as a child plays games at home, stumbles on some destiny-sealing revelations, loses his parents on a stormy night… A dark roots movie steeped in tragedy? Some ‘untold story,’ that. Webb finds much surer footing as Parker hits high school, helped by crack casting. More confident than the last, this Parker is slick on a skateboard and not shy about standing up to Flash Thompson. The geek just got chic: who better to play him than the guy with the algorithms and rhythm from ‘The Social Network’? A young buck made testy by grief, a rebel without a comb, Garfield nails all bases here, star DNA aglow. Stare-y eyes melting, he’s winningly earnest; lithe of physique, he delivers in the dust-ups; blithely gatecrashing Gwen Stacy’s bedroom, he gives good dreamboat.” — Total Film Love For The Ladies “Then there’s his needle-sharp young girlfriend, Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), who wants to get under his skin even more than that radioactive arachnid did; find out what it is that makes his Spidey-senses tingle. Amid all of the soul-searching and lip-biting, it suddenly struck me: Webb has created the first superhero movie aimed primarily at women. Ever since ‘Twilight’ tipped off Hollywood to the spending power of girls and their mothers, a range of increasingly expensive films aimed at that audience has materialised. Perhaps it was only a matter of time before a superhero suited up with them in mind, although it remains to be seen how die-hard Spider-fans will react to their hero courting a different — some would say rival — demographic.” — Robbie Collin, The Telegraph The Negative Spin “Director Marc Webb aims for a new realism, stripping away the brio of Sam Raimi’s 2002 version with Tobey Maguire. He also dispenses with much of the character and sass that always made this character fun. It’s not Garfield’s fault: he is a convincingly troubled, inarticulate Peter Parker, a springily athletic Spider-Man, and has awesome hair. His greatest enemy is the script. That, and the rather wearisome 3D.” — Nick Curtis, The London Evening Standard The Final Word “Graced with great performances from Garfield and Stone, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ is a rare comic-book flick that is better at examining relationships than superheroism. If it doesn’t approach the current benchmark of ‘Avengers Assemble,’ it still delivers a different enough, enjoyable origin story to live comfortably alongside the Raimi era.” –Ian Freer, Empire What do you think of the early “Spider-Man” reviews? ‘Justice League’ Movie In The Works At Warner Bros.

Studio has hired ‘Gangster Squad’ writer Will Beall to pen script. By Kevin P. Sullivan Justice League Photo: Everett/Rex Features/Warner Bros With the enormous success of Marvel’s superhero crossover “,” it was only a matter of time before we heard of renewed efforts from DC Comics and Warner Bros. to get their own franchise mashup, “Justice League,” off the ground. So it should come as no surprise that a new report from Variety confirms that Warner Bros. hired ” Gangster Squad ” writer Will Beall to write the “Justice League” movie sometime last year. Beall has become the go-to guy for Warner Bros., which recently hired him to write the screenplays for its “Lethal Weapon” reboot and the “” remake, which has director Nicolas Winding Refn and star currently attached. The report from Variety points out that the Beall hire occurred while Marvel was assembling “The Avengers,” so the move was more “in anticipation of — rather than a reaction to — the box office success.” Though the actual hire took place months ago, Beall has yet to turn in a script. Along the lines of the “Avengers” development pattern, Warner Bros. has also brought in a writer to take a swing at one of DC’s biggest heroes, Wonder Woman. Michael Goldenberg, one of the three writers of “Green Lantern,” will reportedly pen the script. The other two “Green Lantern” writers, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green, are already at work on a screenplay for “The Flash.” Hiring Beall is Warner’s first major step toward producing a “Justice League” film since production stalled out in 2008. Then, “Mad Max” director George Miller was set to helm the film with Adam Brody as the Flash, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman and a relatively unknown Armie Hammer as Batman. Warner Bros. claimed that a lack of tax breaks and the inability to hire a screenwriter to rewrite the script during the WGA strike stalled that version. That’s My Boy: 9 Life Lessons — and Mad Rhymes — from Vanilla Ice

Stop. Collaborate and listen. Ice is back with a brand new invention. No, really! He is. Rob Van Winkle, who you know as ‘90s rap sensation Vanilla Ice, has a major role in this summer’s new Adam Sandler comedy That’s My Boy , in which he plays himself, Vanilla Ice. The set-up: Donny Berger (Sandler) became famous in the ‘80s for having an affair with his hot teacher. Donny knew Ice from the flash in the pan/has-been circuit, and goes back to hang out with Ice when he reunites with the grown son ( Andy Samberg ) he fathered. Winkle joined the stars of That’s My Boy at a press conference over the weekend, and he stole the panel right from Sandler and Samberg. He’s still dropping mad rhymes, and they’re full of wisdom from his 20 years of growing up and self-reflection on the Vanilla Ice days. We could all take a lesson from Vanilla Ice, so start with some of these. 1. No slippin’ on your pimpin’. “You keep your hustle tight and you never get caught slippin’ on your pimpin’,” Winkle said when the panel was asked how they deal with failures in their careers. Our takeaway is that he has not been slippin’ on his pimpin’, since Winkle keeps working, even on reality shows like Surreal Life and Celebrity Bull Riding . “If you get caught slippin’ on your pimpin’ you’re up sh*t creek without a paddle.” 2. Well, just in case you need that paddle… If you end up paddle-less in a creek, all is not lost. “Learn how to swim through the trenches and get to the other side and when you get there it’ll be paradise for you. I was in the trenches, trying to get to the other side. Sh*t creek, I found a paddle. [Sandler] helped me with the other paddle and here we are.” 3. Embrace the past. “We are who we are because of who we were, which I had to accept, and there’s a little truth to that,” Winkle said when we asked if he’s always thinking in deep wisdom and mad rhymes. 4. Look to the future. “Yesterday’s history, tomorrow is a mystery,” Winkle said when asked if this movie comeback could lead to a Cool As Ice 2. Not only would a Cool as Ice sequel be awesome, it’s also good advice in general. “Take it day by day, man. Get in where you fit in and enjoy the ride. You never know about it.” 5. These mad rhymes matter. These slogans kept the press laughing, but Winkle explained he truly uses them to get through life. “That’s one thing I’ve learned, I live off these little phrases. It’s not all jokes, but these little phrases, they’re more valuable than thousands of dollars worth of therapy to me. They make sense.” 6. Love yourself. “Be yourself, enjoy yourself,” was another one of Winkle’s life lessons. More specifically, find the place that’s right for you, whether it’s rapping or starring in an Adam Sandler movie. “I just get in where I fit in.” 7. Be happy. In a genre of music that can often spiral into anger and violence, positivity is important. “Show me a smile and I’ll show you one back. They’re contagious. So, it works for me. Stay positive, good things happen. Look where I’m at.” 8. Mind the company you keep. It also matters who you let in your life. The Sandler crew was good for Winkle, but be careful of your entourage. “Show me who your friends are and I’ll show you who you are. Karma, believe in it. It’s real. It comes back to you.” 9. Listen to your mother (and word to her!) Since the film is about an embarrassing parent, the panel was asked what they learned from their parents. Winkle shared his mother’s lesson. Maybe mad wisdom runs in the family. “My mom always told me, ‘Act smarter than you are. Always know where your exit is in case you get into too much trouble.’” To borrow from the immortal popular words of Mr. Van Winkle: If there was a problem, yo, he’ll solve it. That’s My Boy opens June 15.

‘Twilight’ Fans Want Kristen Stewart’s Bodyguard To Protect Them

‘People now refer to Kristen Stewart’s bodyguard as ‘HBG,’ ‘ co-creator of ‘Kristen Stewart’s Hot Bodyguard’ Facebook page says. By Kara Warner Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment Full disclosure about my love for “Twilight”: I don’t so much love the books and movies as much as I completely and totally adore the franchise’s loyal, enthusiastic, entertaining fans. Really it’s their passion and dedication that keeps me interested in the whole thing as we inch closer and closer to the release of the final film, “Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” That’s why I’ve decided to dedicate this week’s “Twilight” Tuesday to one of the many groups of fans with whom I’ve become acquainted with over the last few years, Kristen Stewart’s Hot Bodyguard , more specifically, the three lovely ladies who birthed the creative and entertaining concept: Lynsey Jacob, Sarah Morrill and Jennifer Kelley. “Kristen Stewart’s Hot Bodyguard” is a Facebook group dedicated to, you guessed it, Kristen Stewart ‘s hot bodyguard. The origin of their popular group (3,000 members and growing!) can be traced to first glimpses of said bodyguard during the “Eclipse” press tour, followed by an in-person encounter at Stewart’s NYC promotion for “Welcome to the Rileys,” and then an excellent bit of brainstorming during a walk to the subway that begot the term “HBG” (Hot Bodyguard) and the Facebook page. Since then, the ladies have kept close tabs on their man via photos, fellow fans and making the occasional trip to a major event. (I was lucky enough to meet Jacob, Morrill and Kelley at such an event, last year’s “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” premiere. “The goal is always to get a wave,” Jacob told MTV News of the most memorable aspects of their HBG sightings. “It’s exciting. Another one that always cracks me up is watching all of the tweets about HBG when there’s an event going on. When he wasn’t at the Kids’ Choice Awards, people were freaking out. And these tweets are from around the world! Half the time it’s in another language.” “I actually really enjoy making graphics and fun little [themed] pictures for the page,” Morrill added. “I also designed the shirts that we made for the ‘Breaking Dawn’ premiere last year and have already started working on some ideas for this year’s shirts and other swag. Other than that, it’s always cool to see how excited the fans get when we post new pictures or videos of HBG, especially because I’m just as excited to see them as they are! We will be representing Team HBG to its fullest at the ‘Breaking Dawn -Part 2’ premiere in L.A. in November and are excited to meet new fans and see some old ones from the premiere last year.” One thing to point out about these ladies is that they don’t take themselves too seriously. Yes, they are dedicated fans, but they also just want to continue to have fun with the concept. “When Stephenie Meyer grabbed a hold of our HBG heads on a stick and took photos with them, that was so cool,” Jacobs recalled of the author embracing their “fan art” at last year’s premiere. “We were always worried that people would think we were crazy instead of just creative fans, but overall, the page and the whole concept has been really well-received.” “My dream for the group is for it to continue for as long as possible, maybe even until a gray-haired HBG is beating away the paparazzi with his cane in order to protect Kristen,” Morrill joked. “Truthfully, when we started this page a year and half ago, we never could have imagined what it would become. People around the world now refer to Kristen Stewart’s bodyguard as “HBG.” We did that. Stephenie Meyer knows who we are. Kristen mentioned our page in an article for British GQ last year. The awesome folks at MTV think we’re cool. It really doesn’t get much better than that! The only thing I could imagine that would put a cherry on top of this entire experience is to one day be able to change the group’s profile picture to one of the three of us with Kristen and HBG.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Jay-Z Used Old Subway Signs For New Brooklyn Nets Logo

Black-and-white crest is ‘a throwback to Brooklyn and what we’re about,’ Jay tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Brooklyn Nets’ logo Photo: NBA Jay-Z once fancied himself the black Branch Rickey, the man who broke the athletic color barrier and signed Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Sure, Hov used poetic license when he spit the line on 2009’s “Brooklyn Go Hard,” but now that Mr. Carter is part of the brain trust that will transplant the NBA’s Nets to his native BK, the God MC has surely changed the game. At the end of April, the Brooklyn Nets unveiled their new logo, a Jigga-approved black-and-white crest, which bucks the flash and pizzazz typical of most NBA logos these days. “I wanted to make it really classic and strong; a throwback to Brooklyn and what we’re about,” Jay told MTV News on Monday after his press conference where he announced his upcoming two-day Made in America music festival in Philadelphia. Since his 1996 debut album ( Reasonable Doubt ) Jay has stood as an ambassador for New York City’s largest borough. Though the music mogul has gone on to acquire life’s finer things, through songs like “Brooklyn’s Finest,” “Where I’m From” and his #1 hit “Empire State of Mind,” Hova has always rapped about the darker side of his hometown as well. The struggle eventually breeds strength and it was the strength that Jay hoped to capture in the new Nets design. “It’s real gritty and we’re not about flash — well, sometimes,” he said with a brief pause. “Just the roots of Brooklyn as this very bold, strong, simple logo” When the NBA’s Seattle Sonics franchise moved to Oklahoma in 2008, the team was rechristened the Oklahoma City Thunder and was branded with a new color-filled logo fit for post-millennium basketball. With this new Nets move, Jay-Z and Nets brass looked to the past in order to ensure the team’s place in the future. Vintage New York transit system signage served as their chief inspiration. “It was really a take off the old subway signs, if you look at the old subway signs they were in black and white. It was that strong, beautiful, iconic black and white,” Jay said. “I wanted to pick something that would stand the test of time and be here forever.” What do you think of the new Brooklyn Nets logo? Tell us in the comments!

To start off, I just want to say thank you Justin. But to me,…

To start off, I just want to say thank you Justin. But to me, that isn’t enough. March 26th 2012 I met you and you proved to me dreams do come true. Here’s what happened. A couple days before I was told by my friend that Justin was going to be at Radio Disney to talk about his new single ‘Boyfriend’ -which is now on iTunes, go buy it! LA is like 4 hours away, but to a belieber, distance doesn’t matter. So that morning I woke up ridiculously early to head to the radio station. Once I got there I met up with my friend Jade (@LABeliebs) and we headed over. We we’re so nervous because I’ve never met Justin before, let alone been a couple feet away from him. We get to Radio Disney and made our way in, it was funny too because the people who worked there automatically knew why we were there. We got there about an hour and a half before Justin. Finally two big black SUV’s pulled up and out comes Moshe (white Kenny), Kenny, and Alfredo! I was so excited! If you know anything about me, I do love my Fredo. A couple minutes later, Justin pops out and makes his way in. By this point I’m shaking, but I kept my cool. He walks in and I stick out my arms and say, “Justin can get a picture?!” He looked at me and gave me a hug and we took a pic. After that he looked at my arm (where I have portraits of my parents) and said, “OHHHHHHH” I think he liked them! After that Justin proceeded to the other fans and I spotted Fredo! I went up to him and gave him a bag with gifts for Justin and him. I showed Fredo his first. He goes, “AWWW crabbies!” (Krabby Pattie candy) and I showed him a poem I wrote him. Then I showed him Justin’s, which was a Chuck Norris shirt and a very special letter. I told Fredo how important it was I got this to Justin. He looked at me and said, “I got you” with that adorable smile of his. Then I asked Fredo if he remembered me from the time before when I met him. I explained to him that I was the girl who took a picture with him at the Stevie Wonder Benefit Concert but I was too excited so I ended up taking a picture of his shoulder and not us! Yeah, he remembered me. Then he said, “Come here baby, let’s take another” I DIED . After we took our picture, he said he had to go because they were getting ready to start the interview and I told him I’d be waiting for them after. We waited for the interview to end. Meanwhile Vanessa was hanging out talking to us, she is beyond amazing. I love that girl. We chatted about Justin’s hair, ‘Boyfriend’, etc . She was awesome. Then the interview ended. I knew I needed to express to Justin HOW important this letter was. I didn’t want him thinking it was some “Love letter” which apparently he reads. Watch the video below and you’ll get what I’m saying. So I said, “Justin, can I ask you one more thing?” He turned to me and I said, “Pinky promise me you’ll read my letter.” Well little did Justin know I had already gave Fredo the letter to give to him. He looked at me kinda confused and said, “Pinky promise? But what if I can’t….” I wasn’t going to take NO for an answer. Which I knew Justin would recognize because he’s the same way. Determined! Eventually I told him, “Fredo has the letter!” and he looks at me and goes, “Ohh Fredo has it? Okay..” Right then and there I stuck out my pinky and looked him straight in the eyes and he locked his pinky finger on mine. We hugged one last time, but before he left to take pictures with more fans, he kept asking me about all my tattoos. He said, “How long have you been getting tattoos?“ I said, “Since I was 18, I’m actually 21.” He looked at me and said, “Thats awesome, I’m gonna get more.” That boy sure does love tattoos (Just like his daddy!). Finally he walked away but I kept talking to him lol. I even asked him to sing a little of ‘Boyfriend’. He did. It was amazing. While Justin was busy with fans, I chatted with Kenny and Moshe. I told Kenny, “You look amazing!” Justin overheard, and was like, “Ya doesn’t Kenny look good?” After I talked with them for a bit I walked over to Fredo and called him my way. He came right over. We talked about The Hunger Games, Call Me Maybe videos, etc. I swear that he has to be the sweetest guy in the world. Finally Justin made his way to the door where I was talking with Fredo and I blew Justin a kiss and he gave me a high five and then blew a kiss! My friend Jade was lucky enough to touch his hand after he kissed it! So that was our goodbye, for now at least. That was my story. To some this may just all seem silly, but to a belieber this meant the entire world. We were all so hyped, after we got in the car and blasted “Boyfriend” all the way to get some food. Since I hadn’t eaten all day, I knew I had to. We were waiting in line and I was on Twitter. All of a sudden I see “@justinbieber: @shelbaybayluvjb just read your letter. THANK YOU” My heart DROPPED. I couldn’t talk, I just ran out of the restaurant crying. Then my friend Lindsey (@lindseyaprilmay) called me. She already knew why I was freaking out. Heck, I’m still freaking out. I kept saying, “He actually read it!!! I cant believe it!!!! This stuff doesn’t happen to me!!!” We cried together a little longer and hung up. To be honest I never thought this day would come. I thought it was all to good to be true. But then I remembered what Justin always says, NEVER SAY NEVER . Miracles do happen, and that day it happened to me. There’s not words to describe the feeling I had, and still do. It still all seems like a dream. Getting Justin to read that letter was a life goal of mine, and it happened. (If you want to read it tweet me and i’ll give it to you) My parents will forever be smiling, cause I know I will too. And it’s all because of Justin. He does care, and if anyone ever tells you otherwise, send them my way. -@shelbaybayluvjb My Video meeting Justin Read my letter I wrote to Justin Read the rest here: To start off, I just want to say thank you Justin. My name is Lexi and I’m 18 and MBE all started Monday January…

[ Flash 10 is required to watch video.] My name is Lexi and I’m 18 and MBE all started Monday January 30th when I found out Justin Bieber was coming to Miami to record his new album! I thought I knew where he was recording so I told my friend Taylor and she decided to go check it out! A little bit after she got there, she texted me and told me he was going to be there tonight! But I had class that night. Luckily I ended up taking a test before class and it let me drop the class completely! After I raced home and begged my sister’s boyfriend to let me use his car, he finally said yes! I speeded all the way until I got there! When I met up with my friend Taylor, there was around 15 other girls there, and then suddenly a car pulled up and it was Justin! I was beyond excited! Everyone ran to the gate. He came and said he really didn’t have a lot of time but he would take a group picture! Of course I was okay with that. I ended up being no where near him in the picture. But I left right after the picture at like 11:30. At around 12, Alexis and Danielle showed up and just waited outside until Justin ended up coming out and because they were the only 2 girls that were there, he came over and took pictures with them. The next night Wednesday February 1st. There was about 30 girls there. We all went back that night and this is when I met Alexis, and Danielle. We started talking and they told me the best way to get a single picture with him is to wait until hardly no one was here. We ended up going to Walmart together to get lawn chairs and other stuff we needed. We all sat and talked together the whole night. Justin would come out randomly to walk to the other studio or skateboard for a little, but he couldn’t really stop and take pictures and sign stuff for us. Paparazzi was there and Justin didn’t wanna skateboard with them around. Alfredo would come out with him too, so we would talk to him for a little. At around 4:30am Amanda had to leave, but me Alexis and Danielle stayed. And at around 5am there was about 7 of us left and Justin and Alfredo came out. Justin was skateboarding and we all just watched and would randomly ask questions and he would answer and talk to us, it was really fun! The sprinklers in the bushes turned out right by the gate we were at watching Justin at but we all just stood there getting soaked so we could still see him. Then he decided to come and take pictures with us and sign some stuff! He was so nice! He stood there and talked to Danielle, Alexis and I. We all ended up leaving around 6am. I got home around 7am, slept for 3 hours, got up and went to work, and after work showered and got ready, picked up my sister Jamie and headed back to the studio. That night was Thursday February 2nd. Someone from Timbaland’s crew accidentally tweeted the name of the studio, so that next there was about 200+ girls, the news was there and it was a whole big scene! When Justin got there, it got crazy. He ended up leaving early. Basically everyone left. Danielle, Alexis, Amanda, Amanda’s mom Dania, and her friend’s kids were still there. Out of no where, Lil Wayne comes out! He ended up coming over and talking to us and was really nice! Wayne let Max come inside the studio and skateboard with him! He was so happy and then Lil Wayne even came out of the gate and took pictures with us. He ended up hitting on Amanda’s mom Dania. He had us give our phone numbers to his assistant, and he told us for you girls only I’ll do something special, for you and Justin! We were all like okay cool thanks! When me and my sister both got in the car, we had like a mental breakdown! The next day, Friday February 3rd was the day I’ve been waiting forever for! Again there was probably around 200+ people there and Justin got there and he ran out of his car and straight to the skateboard and started skateboarding in front of all his fans! I have no idea what made him decide to do this, but he took off his shirt! It was amazing . After he skateboarded for like 10-15 minutes, they were like, “Okay Justin we have to go record,” so he went inside, and that’s when so most people left. While we waited, Alfredo and Scooter came outside and it was fun! Scooter talked to us a lot and told us stories about Justin. At around 3am, Scooter left and we sat outside waiting. At around 4am Lil Wayne got to the studio! We were all like, “It’s Dania’s daughter!” He came to gate around 5am and told us he would let us in. He took us into the studio and told us  to just sit here and he will be in a minute. A minute later, Justin finally walks in! He comes and shakes all of our hands and said,”Hi. I’m Justin.” After that we took pictures, we talked about his 18th birthday, where he wants to live etc. And luckily we got to hear a beat to one of his songs in the background. After about 15 minutes, he said, “It was really nice to meet you guys but I have to go back to recording,” so we said our goodbyes, and went outside. When we were outside, we meet Mike Posner who was helping Justin with his album. Then some of us took pictures with Justin’s skateboard then we left! It was one of the most amazing weeks and to me the greatest MBE. It was definitely worth missing shifts and getting on trouble at work. And the exhaustion. I wouldn’t change a single thing about that week! – @LexiRobless  @guesshoo_ @alexischewy @mandslopez @alexaliceaa Go here to read the rest: My name is Lexi and I’m 18 and MBE all started Monday January…

‘Glee’-Cap: Will Pops The Question

And he isn’t the only one — check out our musical recap of the latest episode! By Jim Cantiello The cast of “Glee” on Tuesday’s episode Photo: FOX Tuesday night’s “Glee” was all about Will Schuester’s proposal to longtime germaphobe girlfriend Emma, and since he apparently lacks any adult friends, he enlisted his glee-club “family” to help out. They pitched potential songs, ranging from a kick-ass “Moves Like Jagger/ Jumping Jack Flash” mash-up to a sensitive Rachel Berry cover of David Guetta and Usher’s “Without You.” But it was the girls’ “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” that awakened Mercedes’ old feelings for Trouty Mouth. Meanwhile, Becky went after the man she loves — fellow handi-capable student Artie — and viewers sat and watched their brief relationship sour. Bummer. Bigger bummer? Finn’s mom revealed the real way his soldier dad died. Biggest bummer? No Klaine. It was an intense episode filled with belly laughs, several Kleenex-grabs, synchronized swimming, random guest stars and a shocking Finn/Rachel proposal cliffhanger. And it inspired this piano ballad musical “Glee”-cap. Hit play on the embedded video below to check it out, and sing along with the lyrics. I think I hit my head while watching “Glee” this week ‘Cause things got cray A “Grease” homage, but Sam is way more buff than Travolta And not as gay (happy) Enter Coach NeNe Leakes She’s funnier and draggier than anything Eddie Murphy’s done in years Then Helen Mirren speaks as Becky’s brain I guess Ryan Murphy’s “no guest stars” rule disappeared Will asks the kids to pick a song for his proposal ‘Cause he has no real friends and it’s starting to freak me out And in the last half-hour of the show, things got extra dark And they tried really hard to bum me out Surprise! Your dad died! He OD’d thanks to PTSD from the Army Not cool Artie leads Becky on She gets confused ’cause she has Downs Then Artie almost drowns in a pool I’m getting whiplash from the tone LMAO-ing then, hell no, now I’m crying! And then Finn proposed NOOOOOOOOOOO! If there’s a double wedding, to the door I am heading I think I hit my head while watching “Glee” this week ‘Cause things got cray It broke my mind so now I’ll just be here And dancing like Lana Del Rey [ Jim slowly turns in a circle, occasionally touching his hair, looking like a cat paralyzed in fear. ] What did you think of this week’s “Glee”? The premise for Argentinean director Juan Diego Solanas’s English-language sci-fi romance Upside Down has one helluva gimmick: Kirsten Dunst and Jim Sturgess find true love against huge odds, the hitch being that they live on inverted planets and are forbidden to cross over to each other’s world. Upside Down looks to lean heavily on the dystopian alternate sci-fi universe schtick the central gimmick posits (“I can’t talk to you… you’re from Down Below “) and the Inception gravity tumbling already gives me a bit of a headache. But how gorgeous this all looks! For some reason I get a bit of a Titanic vibe when Sturgess lets go and falls back down to his own world. I think that’s a good thing? (Never let go…) Verdict: I’m so there. Double bill it with Melancholia , anyone? [ Bleeding Cool via HitFix ]

Words By Hafeez Raji Rarely do pioneers stay relevant some twenty-five  years after coming on the scene to redefine a genre as one William Griffin, aka Rakim bka The R. Over two decades ago my only knowledge of hip hop–or better yet “rap”–revolved literally on my first vinyl album, a compilation of the Sugar Hill Gang’s record label greatest hits featuring Grand Master Flash, Whodini, The Sugar Hill Gang and a cast of others not even worth mentioning. That album would take a back seat to the only album that mattered to me for years to come and still ranks on my top 10 of all time. Paid in Full by all accounts did what Nirvana’s Nevermind did to the music landscape back in 87 and is widely considered to every bit as influential and important as the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band . Musically it broke open the vault to every James Brown beat ever made and all but killed the common theme of sampling disco and rock albums to create the music for hip hop artists to rhyme to. Before Rakim blessed the mic, the themes of hip hop were fairly light-hearted concentrating primarily on party themes and less thought provoking rhymes. While Run DMC was screaming about being Kings of Rock , Rakim challenged our minds and challenged emcees to put more thought and emphasis on lyrics while charting his way to being labeled God Mc. “I take 7 emcees put em in line, add 7 more brothers who think they can rhyme, it will take 7 more before I go for mine and that’s 21 emcees ate up at the same time.” – “My Melody” Few other hip-hop albums have been sampled more or listed in the top ten as Paid in Full .  Stetsasonic, Gang Starr, 2pac, NWA, Lord Finesse, Warren G, Smif-N-Wessun, Birdman, Lil Wayne, Girl Talk and so on have all sampled Paid in Full . Back in ‘87 hip-hop still had a negative view from the critics and was really thought to be a fad that would soon die. It was perceived as crude noise with no real background or foundation for credibility when compared to other genres, which at most had their ties to soul, jazz or rock. Like Punk Rock the previous decade you had a lot of acts and crew who just simply had no talent or business picking up a microphone hopping on the scene and further contributing to the assertion that the fad would soon die. Paid In Full ushered in a new era of rap by throwing out all the whack conventions and made emcees go back and rethink their careers. Almost 25 years later Rakim still ranks up there in every artists top list of  G.O.A.T. Kanye and Jay-Z may have you watching the throne but all kings and queens ( you can decide who’s who) must answer to a higher power. Paid in Full, is the best and most influential album ever made and there’s nothing wrong with coming in second to it.
