Florence And The Machine ‘Grateful’ For ‘VH1 Divas’

‘It’s really special for me,’ Florence Welch tells MTV News of performing at ‘VH1 Celebrates Soul’ airing Monday at 9 p.m. ET. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by James Montgomery Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine Photo: MTV News Florence and the Machine , Wanda Jackson and Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will all take the stage to honor Amy Winehouse at the 2011 “VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul.” Nas, a longtime friend of the late singer, will introduce the tribute at the show, which airs Monday night at 9 p.m. ET. Two of the “Rehab” singer’s most memorable tracks will be performed. Jackson and Florence and the Machine are set to team up on “Back to Black,” while Jones & the Dap-Kings will play “You Know I’m No Good.” Both songs are off Winehouse’s 2006 breakthrough album, Back to Black. Frontwoman Florence Welch stopped by the MTV offices on Friday (December 16), and we spoke to her about what it means to appear on the popular VH1 “Divas” series. “It’s a real honor, actually, to be counted amongst these amazing female performers,” Welch told MTV News. “It’s really special for me, because I am still a relatively new artist, and to be up there with these really established singers is amazing for me. … I’m really grateful.” This year, VH1 will pay tribute to prominent birthplaces of soul music, including Chicago, Detroit, London, Memphis and Philadelphia. The divas are expected to pay homage to these cities and the genre with their own soulful tracks as well as some of classic tunes, at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. In addition to the trio of acts mentioned above, Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson , Jill Scott and Jessie J are all set to hit the stage for performances. And the celebration isn’t exclusive to the ladies. The Roots have been confirmed as the event’s house band, and drummer ?uestlove will pull double duty as musical director of the concert. Boyz II Men and Travie McCoy are also on the lineup. Tune in to “VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul” on Monday, December 19, at 9 p.m. ET on VH1! Katy Perry Puts Singing Voice To Use As ‘SNL’ Host

Pop star lampoons Christina Aguilera (and herself) during latest episode, which also include appearances from Matt Damon and Alec Baldwin. By James Dinh Katy Perry on “Saturday Night Live” Photo: NBC Katy Perry put her acting chops to the test during her “Saturday Night Live” hosting debut this weekend, but the pop superstar also put her vocal talents to use in most of her sketches, lampooning fellow stars and even herself. Kicking off the evening in her new blond bob, Mrs. Russell Brand walked onto the festive set in a tight red dress covered in Christmas ornaments for the show’s opening monologue. She explained that her crazy video characters are based on real people she grew up with in California, and Kristen Wiig appeared beside the starlet in a blue wig with a whipped-cream-projecting bra, just like Perry’s “California Gurls” character. More “SNL” castmates joined the starlet in her video outfits and brought the audience to laughs when Wiig paired with Perry to sing a girl-on-girl duet of “Teenage Dream.” Aside from skits about Hello Kitty fandom and long-lost soul mates, the 27-year-old singer spent much of the night taking a stab at celebrity impressions, mocking the likes of Christina Aguilera, Florence Welch and Pippa Middleton. In a parody trailer for “The Apocalypse,” a play on the recently released romantic comedy “New Year’s Eve,” Perry dressed up as Xtina, singing her signature elongated notes. Then, Perry portrayed the Florence and the Machine frontwoman in a skit about a canine-themed soundtrack called Doggie Duty, and it was all about the royal family when the ever-changing pop star channeled Pippa Middleton in a segment that depicted a rather raunchy version of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Katy Cats also saw their beloved pop star in a sketch about, well, herself. During an interview with a Finnish TV show called “Kalle,” Perry becomes alarmed when the host, played by Wiig, cues to clips of anything and everything the singer mentions. “We have an excellent research team,” Kalle tells the chart-topper of the constant clip-cueing. Things become strange for Perry when the talk show plays a clip from the future. The latest episode also featured surprise appearances from Matt Damon and Val Kilmer, who appeared together with Perry in a Digital Short sing-a-long about best friends, and Alec Baldwin popped up during “Weekend Update.” The Emmy-winning “30 Rock” star took the opportunity to lampoon his recent American Airlines controversy , when the actor was removed from a flight last week for refusing to turn off his phone during his Words with Friends game. Perry shared the “SNL” stage with former California Dreams tourmate Robyn, who served as the evening’s musical guest. Delivering a pair of high-energy performances of “Call Your Girlfriend” and “Dancing on My Own,” the Swedish pop star showed off her awkwardly slick dance moves and retro ’80s styling. Drake, Florence And The Machine Collabo Not Yet A Reality

‘Whenever I see Drake, we always just end up kind of hanging out, which is equally fun,’ Florence Welch tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Rya Backer Florence Welch Photo: MTV News Since meeting at the 2010 VMAs, Drake has been vocal about his admiration for Florence and the Machine and has even talked of possible collaborations. With both acts set to release albums within weeks of each other, many have wondered if Drake would appear on Florence and the Machine ‘s upcoming Ceremonials or if the band would appear on Drizzy’s Take Care. Sadly, the answer is no. “We haven’t actually done any recording together,” Florence Welch told MTV News. “Whenever I see Drake, we always just end up kind of hanging out, which is equally fun, but no, we haven’t done anything together yet.” After meeting at the VMAs, Welch joined Drake onstage in London this past January and filled in for Alicia Keys performing Drizzy’s “Fireworks.” “I think we’re both big fans of each other’s work,” Welch said. “If we would have the time it is something I would definitely like to do, but we’re both really busy.” Drake’s Canadian cohort the Weeknd , however, took it upon himself to remix Flo and the Machine’s “Shake It Out” in September. Welch is a fan, and she even has hopes of shooting a most creative video for the remix. “Oh my God, I love it,” she gushed. “I love it so much. I really want to make a homemade video of it. I don’t know, like, rainbow exorcism. I hear that song, and it makes me think of puking rainbows.” Would you like Florence and Drake to get in the studio together? Let us know in the comments! Florence And The Machine Almost Went Gaga On Ceremonials

In new interview with Billboard, Florence Welch reveals she nearly worked with Lady Gaga and Katy Perry’s hitmaking teams. By James Montgomery Florence Welch on the cover of Billboard magazine Photo: Billboard Florence Welch graces the cover of the new issue of Billboard magazine (on stands now), and inside, she talks about the making of Ceremonials, her brand-new album with the Machine due November 1 here in the States. Welch began work on Ceremonials (the follow-up to their 2009 breakout Lungs ) more than 18 months ago, and during those early stages, they toyed with the notion of making the new album with the same hitmakers responsible for Lady Gaga and Katy Perry’s success. But eventually, as she told the magazine, Welch decided against it because it would be too much of a departure. “I love Lady Gaga and I love Katy Perry and R&B and rap music. … I love big, American pop music. … So the label said, ‘Do you want to go over to America to work in that scene?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, OK. Maybe I could bring my own take on it,’ ” she recalled. “It got put in the diary to go out for a week, to start writing the new record. And then the diary got sent to me, and I looked at it and just went, ‘No … I can’t do that. This is too weird. I can’t just suddenly leave behind everything that made Lungs. ‘ ” Instead, she decided to work with producer Paul Epworth (most recently known for Adele’s multi-multi-platinum 21 ), and yet, sessions kept getting delayed due to Florence’s continued success in the U.S., thanks in no small part to her show-stealing performance at the 2010 Video Music Awards . Eventually, with Epworth working on tracks in his London studio and Welch recording vocals in U.S. studios during days off from her tour, the duo finished some 40 tracks, 12 of which made the cut for Ceremonials (a total of 20 will be included on the album’s deluxe version, Billboard reports). “I’m pretty surprised at how prolific I’ve been, to be honest. When making the first album, I think I wrote a song about every six months,” Welch said. “The first album was so much about the vocals carrying it. This time I really wanted to give the music space to breathe and for the band to be able to experiment.” Of course, though she was under the gun to finish the new album, Welch says she never felt pressure — mostly because she’d already felt it during the making of her first album. “Nothing could have been harder than making the first record, so I was prepared for the onslaught this time,” she said. “There was a huge amount of media scrutiny on me. … Those conditions of people waiting and waiting, that expectance, everyone talking about you … those are the conditions that I did my first album in. This one, by comparison, is much easier. I came into it having a much clearer idea of what sound I wanted to make and a much clearer idea of what was going to happen after the record was finished.” What are you expecting from Florence’s next album? Jersey Shore Season 4 Cast Pic: Greased Up in Italy

The Jersey Shore cast recently posed with a vespa for a promotional picture in Italy. Season Four of the MTV show is being filmed in Florence as we speak. It’s nice to see everyone together and happy. Well, happy may be a stretch. At least they’re in one piece and looking as guidoed-out as ever. Holla. The Old Country will never be the same again … Hopefully this photo shoot was Snooki’s only experience riding the vespa . What a tumultuous last couple of weeks of filming it’s been. And we thought that last season in Seaside was off the chain. Some highlights from Florence: Deena Nicole Cortese almost falling off a bridge. Ronnie pounding The Situation senseless. Sitch’s dad calling him out on YouTube. Italian locals hating on the entire cast. Snooki rear-ending someone (in a car crash). Snooki getting cursed by a gypsy woman. Snooki and Jionni LaValle breaking up . The fourth season of Jersey Shore premieres August 4. [Photo: WENN.com]
