Melissa Gentz , 22, posted a picture of her bruised and bloodied face on social media. Her attacker was her socialite boyfriend Erick Bretz according to New York Daily News . He allegedly attacked Gentz on September 23 in his downtown Tampa condo tower. Melissa, a University of South Florida student, posted her scars on Instagram three days later writing: “You know how we usually have a side of our face that we prefer more than the other? I like my left side. Unfortunately, it’s the side that was severely bruised by violence,” she captioned the image. “Today was the first day in which I felt like passing some mascara and blush on the right side of my face… I won’t hide the marks of my story because NO woman should feel ashamed of (sic) feel blamed for being a victim of domestic violence.” You can check out Gentz’ graphic pic for yourself here . The bruises Gentz suffered went viral in her native Brazil with over 1 million shares of her photo. Even actress and model Luiz Brunet shared Gentz’s story on her Instagram. Brazilian soap star Joao Vicente de Castro also wrote, “Courageous. Doing what you have done is important and necessary. I’m proud of people like you. We are with you.” Four days after posting her initial photo, Gentz shared another pic of her bruised face, but this time it was nestled in a basket of flowers. “Life moves on and we’re all strong enough to put ourselves first,” she wrote. You can check out that photo here . Erick Bretz’s father owns one of Brazil’s largest grocery chains and he’s also known on the Brazilailan Motocross Championship circuit. Gentz and Bretz were reportedly dating for three months before the September 23 attack. The altercation allegedly grew after Bretz mixed insomnia medication with alcohol. He allegedly kicked Gentz in the face and tried to strangle her with his legs. She also told the cops that he punched her in the face, struck her in the face with a bottle, and pulled out chunks of her hair. Bretz, 25 was arrested on charges of domestic battery by strangulation and tampering with a witness. He was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail, then was later released on a $60,000 bail. He has since pleaded not guilty.
Florida man Charles Nicholas McNeil must’ve thought he was ’bout that life when he tried to fight a police officer who pulled him over for his erratic driving. After police stopped and questioned him, the 28-year old gave them a false name and was found in possession of a knife and a prescription medication bottle containing pills. NBC 2 News reports: The man tried to take off when the officer attempted to arrest him. The two men scuffled and the officer used a Taser on McNeil. The man hit his head on the ground and lost consciousness. Emergency crews treated McNeil. Charles McNeil, who reportedly stole the tractor from a 71-year-old man, has been booked on charges of grand theft and battery.
Florida Man Accused Of Killing Mistress And Her Unborn Son A married father from Florida is being accused of killing his mistress, who was 8 months pregnant with a child authorities say he fathered, according to reports from PEOPLE . 41-year-old Jose Soto-Escalera is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the death of Tania Wise, 23, whose body was discovered in a ditch on August 24, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Bryan Beaty confirmed to the publication. Beaty reports that Wise suffered blunt force trauma to the back of her head as well as trauma to her throat, though authorities have not yet released her official cause of death. An arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE states that a witness told police that Soto-Escalera had given Wise $500 for an abortion, and was very angry that Wise didn’t end up getting one. According to the affidavit, the Florida man denied to police that he was in a sexual relationship with Wise and said instead that he was at another person’s home fixing a car battery on the night she was killed. Soto-Escalera was arrested on September 21. A statement from the sheriff’s office states that digital forensic evidence connected the suspect to the crime, along with an eyewitness’ confirmation of seeing his truck near the crime scene. Authorities believe that the man’s wife was unaware about his relationship with Wise, the affidavit states. Sheriff Ken Mascara told Treasure Coast Newspapers , “We know that he was the father of the baby, we know that she had some other individuals in her life, men in her life. We don’t know if jealousy was a motive, we don’t know if there was other motives involved.” Mascara also told the paper that the woman was scheduled to have a C-section the week after her body was found, also saying that Soto-Escalera did not seem remorseful what-so-ever to police when he was arrested. Wise was pregnant with what would have been her second child. Soto-Escalera is now being held without bail in St. Lucie County Jail, according to jail records. He has not yet entered a plea, Beaty says.
T allahassee Democratic Mayor Andrew Gillum , the first Black major party nominee for Florida governor, has strong support for his candidacy outside the state’s African-American communities, according to a new poll. See Also: Here’s What Polls Are Showing About Black Candidates In Key Races A Quinnipiac University survey released on Wednesday showed Gillum with a strong lead among women, Independent and Hispanic voters over his Trump-backed rival Ron DeSantis , WTVJ-TV , an NBC News affiliate, reported. Gillum had a 59 percent to 39 percent lead among women voters. With Independents, the mayor led DeSantis 56 percent to 40 percent, and he garnered 59 percent of the Hispanic vote. Meanwhile, 98 percent of Black voters said they planned to cast their ballot for Gillum. Latest Quinnipiac Poll Has Andrew Gillum With Nearly Double Digit Lead in Race for Florida Governor: https://t.co/xzhwytVZ3R — NBC 6 South Florida (@nbc6) September 26, 2018 Overall, Gillum had a nearly double-digit lead over his GOP opponent: 54 percent to 45 percent. This appears to be the biggest lead in the polls since Gillum won an amazing come-from-behind primary victory in August. Previously, a Reuters–Ipsos–UVA Center for Politics poll published Sept. 19 gave the Black candidate a 6-point lead over DeSantis. Indeed, his poll numbers have increased each week. A Real Clear Politics average of several polls (covering Aug. 29 through Sept. 20) showed Gillum with an average lead of roughly 4 percentage points. Gillum selected a white running mate for lieutenant governor who brings a surprising asset to the ticket: the support of Black leaders in a key region of the state. Orlando-area businessman Chris King developed relationships with Black ministers and activists in Central Florida during his run for governor in the 2018 primaries against Gillum. DeSantis, who resigned from Congress on Sept. 10 to focus on the election, came under fire for a racist remark about Gillum less than 24 hours after winning the GOP nomination. He urged voters not to “ monkey this up ” by voting for the Black candidate. He’s also been in the spotlight over his deep connections to white supremacists . U .S. Rep. Ron DeSantis , the GOP’s Florida governor nominee, denied connections to a racist once again. DeSantis distanced himself from a donor who called President Barack Obama the N-word, but the candidate will likely keep the campaign funds. NewsOne did not receive an immediate response Thursday from DeSantis’ campaign on whether the more than $20,000 from Steven A. Alembik was given back. See Also: Don’t ‘Monkey This Up’: Andrew Gillum’s Trump-Backed Opponent Shows His Racism To Florida Voters Alembik, a 67-year-old self-employed data and email services provider, tweeted on Wednesday that the former president is a “F—KING MUSLIM N—ER,” Politico reported. He wrote the slur in response to a Republican National Committee tweet disparaging Obama for criticizing the GOP. “We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again: we adamantly denounce this sort of disgusting rhetoric,” DeSantis campaign spokesman Stephen Lawson said in a written statement, according to Politico. But it’s unclear whether the campaign continued to hold on to Alembik’s contributions to DeSantis, which totaled $22,920 over the years. There seems to be no end to the long list of white supremacists associated with Rep. Ron DeSantis. Here's our updated timeline… https://t.co/0u8HGrfJMZ #AndrewGillum pic.twitter.com/Llr0TrTn4D — NewsOne (@newsone) September 20, 2018 It didn’t take long for the Trump-backed nominee to fire off a racist attack against Andrew Gillum , Florida’s first Black nominee for governor. DeSantis warned Florida voters in a TV interview not to “monkey this up” by electing Gillum. DeSantis’ racist comment came less than 24 hours after the two candidates won their party’s nomination in the Aug. 28 Florida primary election. The Republican nominee denied that his remark was racist but that’s hard to believe given his long history of associating with white supremacists. After blowing his racist dog whistle in the televised interview, new details emerged about deep links between white nationalists and the congressman. He spoke four times at Freedom Center conferences organized by right-wing conservative David Horowitz , who has said Black people owe their freedom to whites who are the target of the nation’s “only serious race war,” according to the Washington Post .
