‘This Woman’s Work’: Story Behind Michael Lynche’s ‘Idol’ Cover

Lynche sang Kate Bush’s 1989 song, which was later covered by Maxwell. By Gil Kaufman Michael Lynche on Wednesday’s episode of “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images “American Idol” judges often rail on contestants for not making the right song choices. But on Wednesday night, personal trainer and new dad Michael Lynche provided a textbook example of how to pick the perfect song. The 26-year-old Florida native, whose wife gave birth their firstborn while he was performing during the show’s Hollywood Week, moved judge Kara DioGuardi to tears with his sensitive take on British singer Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work.” On a night when the judges criticized some singers for not connecting with the words they sang, Lynche astutely picked a song that mirrored the tumultuous changes in his personal life. The combination of Lynche’s velvety, gospelized vocals and the song’s connection to his life’s journey made for dramatic TV. DioGuardi felt the emotion, tearfully telling Lynche, “I’ve never cried after hearing something like that. It’s amazing. You were amazing. And it’s so relevant for you and I can feel it. It’s your life right now. It’s your respect for your wife, what you’ve gone through … and as a woman who doesn’t have a child, I can relate to it so much and it brought me to tears.” “This Woman’s Work” is one of Bush’s most beloved tunes, and the biggest commercial success from an artist who has always followed her peculiar muse. Bush’s career began in the late 1970s, when Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour turned label EMI on to the then-teenaged songwriting prodigy. In 1985, she released her most celebrated album, Hounds of Love . That album featured the hits “Running Up That Hill” and “Cloudbursting,” and it helped cement her reputation as an enigmatic pop poet. In 1988, Bush provided “This Woman’s Work” to director John Hughes for his coming-of-age drama “She’s Having a Baby.” The song, reportedly written specifically for the film, plays during a scene in which new father Kevin Bacon is pacing outside the delivery room where his wife is having their first child, fretting about the changes his family is about to face. Bush’s self-directed video for “Work” parallels the story of the film. The primly dressed singer, seated at a grand piano, plays the haunting melody, and shots of her are intercut with images of a nervous man in the waiting room of a hospital. A ghostly image of Bush stands behind the man and hugs him as he breaks into tears and stares ominously into the dark. A flashback then reveals Bush collapsing and being rushed to the hospital as the man wails in agony. At the end of the clip, a smiling nurse comes over to the man and puts her hand on his shoulder, appearing to give him good news as Bush quietly shuts the lid on the piano. “Work” later appeared on Bush’s 1989 album The Sensual World , which contained a number of tunes about the perils and pitfalls of love (“Love and Anger,” “Between a Man and a Woman”) and a title track inspired by Irish author James Joyce’s epic “Ulysses.” In the years that followed, the song underscored dramatic scenes in a number of TV shows (“Felicity,” “Alias,” “Party of Five”). In 1997, it was covered by Maxwell during his MTV Unplugged appearance. He later included a studio version of the track on his 2001 album Now , and it peaked at No. 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year. Bush has rarely toured, and she took a lengthy break between her 1993 album The Red Shoes — which featured contributions from Prince, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton — and her 2005 double album Aerial to raise her family. Chick Claims Affair with Engaged Jake Pavelka, Says ABC "Instructed" Vienna Girardi Proposal

Radar Online may have topped itself with this one. Citing an ex-girlfriend with no name, and offering no details of any actual sex, that site says Jake Pavelka cheated on Vienna Girardi with some random ex. His alleged ex-girlfriend says The Bachelor star “made contact” with her after taping the show. Scandalous! He also said that Vienna meant nothing to him. Supposedly. The woman has not been publicly identified, possibly because she does not exist. But whoever it is gave a garbled interview on some Florida radio station. In the interview, the woman says that Jake was forced to propose to Vienna Girardi . From what we know of The Bachelor, that part might really be true! For a guy who’s supposedly cheating on Vienna and in love with some nameless other woman, Jake sure looked happy yesterday in his sit-down with Ellen DeGeneres . “When you get down on one knee and propose marriage to someone I take that very seriously,” she says through distorted audio. “The fact that he did that exclusively because he was instructed to do that, it disappoints me so much.” Instructed. You knowz it. That’s how Chris Harrison rolls. The supposed Jake Pavelka ex reveals that they had made plans together for the future and even had a possible marriage discussion. She feels she was lied to. “His actions are a complete 180 of that person he claims to be,” she says. “I feel like I’m forced to say something for the sole purpose of defending my honor.” Mmm hmm. This is even more absurd than the story yesterday claiming Vienna is an evil mastermind who manipulated Ali and conned Jake into proposing. Jake started calling her after he finished taping The Bachelor, she says, and those phone calls led to an in person meeting and “he told her he loved her.” Whether this is true or complete BS, the question remains: Will Jake Pavelka and Vienna Girardi last, and actually walk down the aisle?

By Gil Kaufman Tyler Grady on “American Idol” Thursday Photo: Fox After one of the roughest first rounds in “American Idol” memory , voters appeared to get it right with the initial four eliminations of season nine. Tiger Woods Apologizes … to Daughter’s School

Tiger Woods finally emerged from seclusion and apologized to family, friends, fans and business associates Friday in an emotional, 13-minute, prepared statement. Saying he is deeply sorry for his actions and letting down pretty much the whole world, the golf legend began the long process of rebuilding his shattered image. When and if he accomplishes that goal remains to be seen, but he is pulling out all the stops right now. Today, his young daughter’s school got a special apology. Tiger and Elin Nordegren Woods have issued a letter of apology to the parents at the Florida school where their 2-year-old Sam Alexis Woods attends day care. Can Tiger claw his way back to respectability? In the letter, Tiger says he’s sorry but again blames the paparazzi as much as himself for creating an ” inconvenience ” around Premier Academy in Windermere. It’s not likely to move anyone to tears (like this guy ) as his mea culpa did last week, but at least Woods realizes the wide-ranging consequences of his actions. Follow the jump for the full text of the letter … Dear Premier Academy parents, We would like to share our appreciation for your support over the past several months and offer our personal apology for any inconvenience you are experiencing due to the increased media scrutiny surrounding our children. We truly understand how frustrating it can be. We hope that the paparazzi will find something better to do with their time in the near future. In the meantime, it is our goal to keep life as normal as possible for our children. We are sure that as parents you can appreciate that. For Sam, that normalcy means attending the school that she enjoys so much. Again, we truly appreciate the support from the entire Premier Academy family. Kind regards, Elin and Tiger Woods If nothing else, Woods is doing what he can to repair the damage in his personal life first. What do you think of Tiger’s apology (the public one)?

Japan gets the nod to kill whales again

Commercial whaling may soon resume, after being banned for nearly a quarter of a century. Secret talks, to be held in Florida at the beginning of next month, look like finalising a deal to allow Japan to begin killing the leviathans for gain once more. The deal would go to the International Whaling Commission for approval in June. World governments agreed to a moratorium on hunting in 1982, after species after species had been driven to the brink of extinction. The halt began five years later, but Japan has exploited a loophole that allows “scientific” whaling, ostensibly for research. It kills about 1,000 great whales around Antarctica annually. The deal remains under wraps, but is expected to allow the country to whale in its coastal waters. In return, Japan would slightly scale back its Antarctic hunt, but – in another victory for its government – that hunt might be legitimised. Iceland, which also conducts scientific whaling, and Norway, which legally exempted itself from the ban, may also agree to scale back their very much smaller operations. The idea is that fewer whales would be killed and an anarchic state of affairs brought under control. But conservationists fear that – apart from conceding a principle that represents one of their greatest international victories – the agreement would lead to other countries starting hunts in their coastal waters, and to a worldwide revival of officially sanctioned whaling. added by: jefftego

The Google CEO and His Mistress: The Tell-All Blog

Eric Schmidt has long campaigned for free-flowing information, and even against the very idea of secrecy . But we doubt the Google CEO loves disclosure so much he’ll approve of an indiscreet blog-cum-memoir by his sometime mistress. Schmidt parted ways with Bohner last summer , but that hasn’t kept him out of what a tipster in his ex-girlfriend’s social circle called her “pet project:” a multimedia confessional autobiography, including a Google-hosted blog called “Recovery Girl 007” , and eventually a book. On the blog, Bohner writes about Schmidt, dubbing him “Dr. Strangelove” and disclosing that he gave her a prototype iPhone. She also calls Steve Jobs a “stoned Jesuit preist” (more below). That aside, the intricate online memoir-in-progress primarily details Bohner’s recovery from cocaine and alcohol addiction via 12-step programs and yoga. It’s not clear how Bohner is funding the project, which has seen the former CNBC correspondent hire an art director, webmaster and editor, all prominently credited here and at the bottom of this post in what might just be the most crowded masthead ever assembled for a personal Blogspot. One gossip thinks Schmidt’s money is somehow behind the project, but we’re not so sure; barely a year ago, when he was still dating Bohner, the married billionare was showering her with little more than love and jewelry, despite an overture for him to put money into the documentary company where Bohner worked. Maybe Bohner’s hocked some of those gifts, or is simply relying on savings. It certainly doesn’t seem as though she’s become reentangled with Schmidt; our tipster wrote that the couple are “hitting it too occasionally for her liking” — which could well mean not at all. What Bohner has so far detailed of her personal autobiography is certainly rattling stuff of the sort that would pull a caring lover’s heartstrings. She writes about snorting cocaine in Hyde Park, London; bingeing on tequila in Los Angeles; sipping brandy at age eight; quitting booze and then relapsing; shaking and heaving at a friend’s house when trying to go dry; and getting checked in to a detox center. (It is a “Colonel Stevenson” who introduces Bohner to brandy as a child in Southern Spain. That this same Colonel Stevenson appears on Bohner’s more public blog is, along with a pointer from our tipster, how we know the former Donald Trump ghostwriter is also responsible for the Recovery Girl 007 blog.) We assume Bohner will also eventually give the backstory behind her criminal record. Using her birth day and year, gleaned from her blog, and a public records search, we found she’d been sentenced to just under three years (of probation?) in South Florida (where she now resides) for aggressive assault with a weapon, no intent to kill, in a 2005 Florida incident. In New Jersey she got three years probation for a crime we’ve not yet determined. Then there were Bohner’s landlord issues in New York City. After two civil filings from a building management company in late 2005 and early 2006, Bohner was forcibly evicted in May 2006, according to a public records search. Despite repeated attempts, we were not able to elicit any quote or rebuttal from Bohner on her project or background. On her website, Bohner writes about turning her life around with help from a Buddhist monastery in Thailand, where she worked, and from a popular Los Angeles yoga instructor, Keith Fox. Schmidt has good reason to hope that turnaround sticks: On Bohner’s site, the former business journalist writes repeatedly about the men in her life; it’s not hard to imagine Bohner burning an ex who falls out of her good graces. In addition to Schmidt, Bohner’s dated author Michael Lewis (to whom she was briefly married) and Lazard executive Steve Langman. Among the lovers on the Recovery Girl site is someone code-named Dr. Strangelove, who is often in Los Angeles. “Dr.” Eric Schmidt holds a Ph.D. as well as a home in Santa Barbara County. Dr. Strangelove and Eric Schmidt are one in the same, as the first of several excerpts below makes clear. During a trip to the U.S. Virgin Islands (emphasis added): I haven’t thought about Dr. Strangelove in such a long time-I try to sweep all of that data completely under the Persian carpet. That’s a lie. I think about him every so often in these fleeting cinematic flashes…I have completely stopped sleeping. My friend Jason is so worried about it that he confiscates my Blackberry… I’ve been sleeping with my Blackberry just in case Strangelove might send an e-mail. If I was really smart I ditch the Blackberry for the iPhone he gave me – the prototype version . But I have yet to arrive. Stephen Jobs is not St. Stephen. He’s just a stoned Jesuit priest lost in his garden . Strangelove still has his stranglehold on me and nothing is new under the sun. Later in the same post: The dream is always the same… strolling through winding paths at a government insane asylum in northern Massachusetts.I’ve been committed-against my will. It is Strangelove, my genuinely caring, concerned boyfriend . He has convinced me, or, he has convinced me that I’ve convinced him, that I am suicidal. The dream always begins with me walking the grounds of the campus. I look for the cafeterias with the free food. I can’t find the line for the free bus back to Santa Monica. I keep pulling on the locked doors. At the Buddhist temple in Thailand : How did I get here? There was the phone call. There was the betrayal. Dr. Strangelove had lied about his involvement in it all . And then there were a couple of conversations that followed. And all I remember feeling was that I had to get out of L.A. After detox in South Florida : You see I wasn’t going to go back to Los Angeles. That part was clear. The L.A . experiment hadn’t worked. Game over. Case closed. The work thing had ended when I went to the monastery in Thailand. And the relationship was officially over; Dr. Strangelove was dead . Next chapter. We’ll certainly be reading Bohner’s future installments closely. And we’re sure Schmidt will, too.
