Selena Gomez Fans, Prepare To Be ‘Shocked’ By ‘Spring Breakers’

Former Disney star talks to MTV News about ‘taking risks’ in her upcoming flick. By Cory Midgarden Selena Gomez Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Selena Gomez is all grown up. The former “Wizards of Waverly Place” actress has traded in her Mickey Mouse ears for a two-toned bikini and a whole lot of scandal in the upcoming “Spring Breakers.” “People will be a little shocked, I think,” Gomez told MTV News while promoting her new self-titled fragrance in New York on Saturday. “I’m a little nervous about it but honestly it’s a right step for me, I’m really proud of it.” Also shaking their squeaky-clean images in the flick are “Pretty Little Liars” star Ashley Benson and Disney alum Vanessa Hudgens. The film follows the girls as they head to Florida for spring break, where they find themselves behind bars after robbing a restaurant. “I think as an actress it really challenged me,” Gomez said. “All of the other actresses are also trying to prove themselves, so it was just really, really fun.” Although Gomez is taking more chances with both her acting and music, there is still one role that is a little too racy for the 19-year-old: “Fifty Shades of Grey.” “I know I’m taking risks but I don’t think I could do that,” she told MTV News. “That would be a little too much for me.” Gomez became familiar with the hot and heavy storyline after being approached to star in Funny or Die’s “Fifty Shades of Blue.” “When they told me about the skit, I didn’t know what [‘Fifty Shades of Grey’] was about, so I started to read it and was like, oh, this is spicy, I thought it was good, it was intriguing,” she said. “The skit was really funny.” So with all of this research under her belt, who does the 19-year-old think should play S&M-loving Christian Grey’s object of affection? “Someone older should do that part,” she replied. What are your thoughts on a more mature Selena Gomez? Sound off in the comments below! Nicki Minaj Blasts Radio Station, Defends Concert Pull Out

Nicki Minaj has some NSFW words for 97.1 FM. The rapper appeared opposite Funk Master Flex on that New York radio station this morning and addressed the beef she has with another station DJ, Peter Rosenberg, that led to her canceling her appearance at the Hot 97 Summer Jam on Sunday. That last-minute decision stemmed from Rosenberg’s remarks to open the concert two days ago, when he introduced the first act by saying: “I know there are some chicks in here waiting to sing along with Starships later. I’m not talking to y’all now. F–k that bulls–t.” Encouraged by Lil Wayne, who was on hand to hear Rosenberg slam his friend, Minaj pulled out of her appearance and says in the interview it was a matter of “respect.” She also says many other naughty words. Prop 8: Appeal to Overturn California Gay Marriage Ruling Shot Down; Supreme Court Battle Ahead?

A federal appeals court ruled today that it will not review a three-judge panel’s decision to overturn California’s Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage. Proposition 8 banned gay marriage in California, before it was ruled unconstitutional last year. Proponents plan to appeal the ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court. That would put battle for same-sex marriage on a national stage . The ruling comes after a federal court ruled that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which says states don’t have to recognize gay marriages in other states and defines marriage as between a man and a woman for federal purposes, is unconstitutional. The Supreme Court could also decide to hear that case next year. In February, a three-judge panel in California voted 2-1 against the voter-approved gay marriage ban, upholding an earlier decision by Judge Vaughn Walker. The panel said that by denying same-sex marriage rights, Proposition 8 violated the equal protection clause and due process clause of the U.S. Constitution. The court wrote: “Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples.” Prop 8 supporters appealed, asking for a larger panel to review the case, and sponsors say they are eager take the matter before the Supreme Court. However, The February decision was narrowly written and focused on the measure in California, meaning the high court may not hear the case. Despite Prop 8 being ruled unconstitutional, and that ruling being upheld twice, same-sex couples in California will not be allowed to marry right away. As long as Prop 8 supporters have a chance to appeal, the measure stands; If the Supreme Court won’t hear the case, that would end the process. Same-sex marriage :

Bath Salts Bedlam: Designer Street Drug on the Rise, Targeted By New Legislation

A U.S. senator praised pending legislation proposing a nationwide ban on “bath salts,” a dangerous synthetic drug that officials believe led to the recent ” zombie apocalypse ” bloodbath in Miami where Rudy Eugene ate most of Ronald Poppo’s face. “Dangerous drugs like bath salts are terrorizing communities and destroying lives,” Sen. Chris Coons (D) said Monday. “Stricter measures must be taken to stem the growing prevalence of bath salts and other new designer drugs.” Bath salts were on the rise long before Eugene (below) struck. A number of calls to poison centers concerning “bath salts” rose 6,138 in 2011 from 304 in 2010, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers. More than 1,000 calls have been made so far this year. These so-called bath salts, not to be confused with aromatherapy / cleansing products, are an inexpensive, synthetic, super-charged form of speed. The drug consists of a potpourri of constantly changing chemicals, three of which – mephedrone, MDPV and methylone – are banned by the DEA. Bath salts are easily available online, and come in brand names such as “Purple Wave,” “Zoom” or “Cloud Nine.” A 50-milligram pack sells for $25-50. The drugs create a condition officials call “excited delirium” that makes users paranoid, violent and unpredictable … as Miami police know all too well. An officer shot and killed Rudy Eugene a week ago after he was allegedly feasting on the face of Ronald Poppo , a homeless man, on a busy highway. Police are investigating whether the drugs found in bath salts were in the alleged attacker’s system; that may not be confirmed for a few weeks. This case is not the first time police have had to respond to people high on the drug committing illegal acts or exhibiting dangerous behavior. In July 2010, Carey Shane Padgett of Roanoke County, Va., allegedly beat his friend Cara Marie Holley to death. He later claimed he took bath salts. In April 2011, investigators determine that Army Sgt. David Stewart was under the influence of bath salts when he killed himself, his wife and their son. Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen said he was disturbed by the affects on an unidentified Florida teen who he witnessed high on bath salts. In most cases, the active ingredients are a central nervous system stimulant that acts something like a mix of methamphetamine and cocaine. It’s a dangerous situation, leading to a high that some drug abuse experts describe as up to 13 times more potent than cocaine. The altered mental status it brings can lead to panic attacks, agitation, paranoia, hallucinations and violent behavior. The Senate passed legislation last month to make the sale of bath salts illegal , and Coons, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, urged “the House-Senate conference committee to preserve the measure during its negotiations this month.”

Don’t be fooled by the red carpet appearances with Kanye West … or the revealing magazine covers … or the fact that she gave the following interview while hosting a pool party in Las Vegas. Casey Anthony to Leave U.S. For Costa Rica?

Casey Anthony wants to leave Florida as soon as legally possible and is eyeing a move to the central American paradise of Costa Rica, according to reports. Anthony has been in hiding since she was acquitted of murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, but has recently been making forays back into the public. Virtually unrecognizable due to the amount of weight she has gained sitting around doing nothing, she is soon planning on leaving the U.S., and for good. She would have fled already, but Anthony is on probation for one year after pleading guilty to check fraud and is required to live in Florida during that time. Once Casey’s probation ends later this summer, she plans on ditching the sunshine state for Costa Rica. She is “counting the days,” according to sources. “She has been researching countries that she could move to and Costa Rica is at the top of the list,” a source close to the situation tells Radar Online . “Casey wants to live in a tropical setting and the cost of living is extremely low in Costa Rica. She wants to put as much distance as possible from Florida.” “She feels this is the best possibly place to start a new life. Costa Rica also appeals to her because Americans are warmly embraced by the locals.” Not sure that applies to accused child-murderers, but whatever. There’s one additional holdup, of course. She is still being sued by Zanaida Gonzalez for defamation after Casey said a woman with that name kidnapped Caylee. According to reports, Casey Anthony is “annoyed” and dreading that she has to testify at the upcoming trial, even if she can blame only herself.

George Zimmerman Seeks Re-Release From Jail

Lawyers for George Zimmerman, the killer of Trayvon Martin, will ask a judge to release him from jail again after Zimmerman’s bail was revoked last week. The announcement comes as Zimmerman, 28, returns to a cell in the Seminole County jail in central Florida, after a circuit court judge revoked his bond. Judge Kenneth Lester Jr. yanked his $150,000 bond, posted in April, after prosecutors said both he and his wife had lied about their financial status. Free on bail or not, he faces trial on second-degree murder charges . They had failed to tell the court about at least $135,000 that anonymous donors had contributed to help bankroll Zimmerman’s legal defense in the case. “Mr. Zimmerman knew a sum had been raised … we feel the failure to disclose these funds was caused by fear, mistrust and confusion,” his lawyers said. “The gravity of this mistake has been directly illustrated, and [Zimmerman] understands this has undermined his credibility, which he will have to work to repair.” They also withheld one of two valid passports issued in George Zimmerman’s name, prosecutors said at a hearing. The judge pulled his bail as a result. The murder case has grabbed widespread media attention and sparked debate about U.S. race relations, profiling, media, guns and self-defense laws. Defense lawyers said in a statement posted on their website on Monday that Zimmerman, who went into hiding because of death threats after his previous release on bond, was unfairly “thrust into the national spotlight as a racist murderer.” The motion to re-post bail is expected to be filed Tuesday.
