Loblaws’ Grown Close to Home Foods…Aren’t

Images by B. Alter: Would you rather shop here… Way back in 2007, TreeHugger Lloyd went to Loblaws, Canada’s largest supermarket chain, looking for fresh local food in July and he found: cherries. It’s three years later and things have changed–sort of. Now they have a little booth at the front of the store called “Grown Close to Home” and they are selling Ontario peaches and potatoes and cucumbers. But right behind it they have their cherries from the USA and pineapple from Costa Rica. That’s a rather broad definition of local. We aren’t the only ones noticing this… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Family of Four Grows Their Food in a Swimming Pool

Images: Youtube screen grabs Food Doesn’t Get More Local Than That A family living in Mesa, Arizona, has decided to convert an old unused backyard swimming pool into a very productive DIY urban greenhouse, which they named Garden Pool. Within a small, mostly enclosed space, they grow all kinds of vegetables and herbs, as well as raise chickens and tilapia fish. They started this project in 2009 and expected to be “self-sufficient” by 2012, but they’ve reached that goal this year, getting “8 fresh eggs a day, unlimited tilapia fish, organic fruit, veggies, and herbs 365 days a year” (though I’m not sure if by self-s… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Mix’n Match Prefab: A New Approach from Michelle Kaufmann

One of the problems of modern prefab is to find a balance between the efficiency of standard plans and the flexibility of customization. Weekday Vegetarian: Healthy Farmhouse Corn Cakes

Photo: Kelly Rossiter If I buy too much corn at the farmers’ market, which, truth be told is pretty much always, I sometimes grill the whole cobs all at once and then use up the corn kernals in other dishes. Poultry, Beef More Likely to Make You Sick, CDC Says

Credit: VirtualErn via Flickr. If you want to reduce your chances of foodborne illness, go veggie. That’s one take away from a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report linking types of food to illness outbreaks in the U.S. Of course, you can’t blame the poultry or beef. And even vegetables can make you sick if they’re not properly handled or prepared. Maybe another take away is the need for stricter enforcement of health codes. … Read the full story on TreeHugger
