Oreos as Addictive as Cocaine, Study Finds

We all know Oreos are addictive, but a new study suggests that the cookies are as addicting as actual drugs … at least in the way the brain responds to them. The “pleasure center” of the brain, the nucleus accumbens, apparently gets just as activated in response to Oreos as it does to cocaine and morphine. Oreos: Addictive! That could certainly have some pretty major public health implications if Oreos were as damaging to one’s system as the aforementioned narcotics. They’re not, of course, and the study was only done in rats. However, the Connecticut College authors say it’s likely relevant to humans as well. It could explain, they say why people have such a hard time resisting eating an entire sleeve of the cookies after they’ve set out just to eat one. The study, to be presented at the Society for Neuroscience’s annual conference, also claims that rats, like humans, like to eat Oreo’s creamy center first. To test how the animals responded to Oreos vs. drugs, the team trained mice to navigate a maze. On one side, Oreos were provided. On the other? Rice cakes. As you’d guess, the rats were more likely to spend time on the Oreo side. Rats treated with morphine or cocaine rather than Oreos reacted similarly. They found that regardless of what “substance” the rats were offered (Oreos, coke, or morphine) they spent about the same time on the “drug” side. “Our research supports the theory that high-fat/high-sugar foods stimulate the brain in the same way that drugs do,” professor Joseph Schroeder said. “It may explain why some people can’t resist these foods,” he added, echoing a common refrain, “despite the fact that they know they are bad for them.” The research may thus bear some relevance to public health issues, namely the fact that high-calorie foods are often low-priced and highly addictive. And the fallout from poor eating behaviors can be as dramatic as that from drugs, said the authors, even if the risk of death from one usage is lower.

Pepsi Ad Appears to Support Rape, Has Serious Font Problems

A levitating magician in a Pepsi Max ad ? Confusing and misleading, but not exactly controversial. That same qualifier can’t be said for a new poster sponsored by the beverage company, however, as we’re pretty sure it’s in promotion of Pepsi’s partnership with Japanese clothing company A Bathing Ape’s line AAPE. But we can’t be totally sure because… well… just look at the font choice that was somehow settled on: This image first appeared on Reddit and Pepsi is yet to respond to various requests for a comment. In the meantime, we’ll at least assume the distributor is not supporting sexual assault and we’ll strongly urge it to go with Times New Roman in the future.

Red Lobster Waitress Receives Racist Note on Receipt; Story Goes Viral

Toni Christina Jenkins, a young Red Lobster waitress was the target of a racial slur left by a customer on a receipt, which she reported to management. In the space for gratuity, the customer wrote “None, n**ger.” Red Lobster Waitress Receives Racist Note on Receipt Christina showed the note to her boss, she says, and was assured she had done nothing wrong. But things changed when she posted it on Facebook. The Franklin, Tenn., teen was only hoping for “some prayers and support,” her mom says, when she posted the hateful note on her Facebook page. It went viral and sparked a great deal of outrage controversy, discussion, hoax theories and more racist comments. There were even reports she had been fired. Toni graduated from high school a year early, her mother says, and is waiting tables to help put herself through medical school at Belmont University. Monday, mom Tina Jenkins-Wilson told Radar that Red Lobster “let her go. They told her she could not return to work and that they were [investigating].” “They didn’t tell her they were going to pay her. They didn’t say if they were going to punish the people that did it. They just said they were going to let her off.” “It’s heartbreaking. She’s a nursing student who is trying to save up money so she can get back and forth to school. Waitressing is how she makes her money.” UPDATE : The restaurant strongly refutes this. A spokesperson for the restaurant tells THG: “Christina Jenkins has NOT been fired. In fact, she has not lost any days of work so far and is still scheduled to work this week as usual.” “We are extremely disturbed by this situation and are currently investigating to determine exactly what happened. We take this extremely seriously.” “This kind of language is completely disgusting and has no place in our restaurant or anywhere else and we are committed to getting to the bottom of what happened as quickly as possible.” That’s very good to hear. In any event, it’s unclear why the mom would be so confused or why the customer(s) left a note like that for the server. Story developing …

Fat Letters: Schools in 19 States Weigh Kids, Send Reports to Parents

Schools in 19 states are weighing students and sending reports to their parents with their body mass index (BMI) and other measurements, reports say. Kids have started calling the reports “fat letters.” Fat Letters Many families and health experts have started pushing back against the reports -slash-fat letters, arguing they could damage the children’s self-esteem. Proponents say the practice is actually an effective progress report and a tool for establishing whether a student is healthy or unhealthy physically. A person’s BMI is calculated by dividing their weight by the square of their height, then applied to their age and gender and measured against peers. BMI is the primary measurement used to determine if a person is considered overweight and obese, a condition these 19 states are trying to reduce. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third of children and adolescents are considered overweight or obese. These children are believed to at increased risk for a variety of health problems, including asthma, sleep apnea, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. None of which are good, obviously, but is it really a school’s place to call attention to it in this manner, evaluating BMI alongside students’ academic skills? Fat letters: Right or wrong?   Right! If it helps anyone get healthier it’s worth it! Wrong! It’s not the schools’ place to do this! View Poll »

Ireland Baldwin’s Post-Fuck Pic of the Day

Ireland Baldwin is such a rebellious teen…all 17 and posting pics of her posing like she just had shitty teen sex because even with all the porn these kids are exposed to…they still don’t know how to fuck…but they sure like letting people know they fuck because it makes them feel so mature…I blame being yelled at by her daddy and humiliated at a young age, or maybe it’s the hormones in the food, but then again, I was fucking at 17, and it’s not a big deal, but it’s fun to pretend it is, because that’s what the internet wants us to do…at least why else would Ireland Baldwin be posting shit like this, it’s just as easy to not post her “personal pics”…and next time, maybe she should post a pic before the orgasms…you know when it’s actually less of a post sex loving cuddle and more of a dirty ditch pig getting railed…
